Yet another "note-taking" software -- seems to be more in the "web-clipping and surfulater family", if I may say so...

http://www.macropool...fessional/index.html

Here's a review

Lashiec : thank you for your opinions. I was also aware of the Matousec test results, and this is one reason why I wanted to give Comodo try. Tested it and, well, my current setup doesn't seem to like it (and I don't feel like spending hours on configuring a firewall). To me, AV or firewall are just means to reduce the probabilities of running into bigger problems. Probabilities are probabilities, and, of course, it's not because you DON'T run a firewall or an AV that you'll get attacked. Exactly like vaccination, any medical prevention, wearing a helmet when you're riding a motorcycle, etc. But I'm more the careful type, so, i'll wear a helmet.  ;)

Curt : sorry... I forgot about your virtual solution. Actually, even if I read some stuff on the subject, etc. I've never tried it.  You prefer bufferzone over sandboxie?

2503
Thanks for your suggestions.

I guess I will just try different combinations and see what my computer seems to prefer...

Curt : a while ago, I used to have outpost and NOD32 installed and it seemed to work pretty well. It's just that, well, Outpost got mixed reviews in the last year, so I was wondering. I tried the comodo firewall last night and my experience was not too bright : slow connection, strange Explorer freezes...???!!!   :-\so, I might try outpost again.

jgpaiva  : although I've had bad experiences with firewalls in the past (and some of them were supposed be very good -- zone alarm), I think I need one because I'm using a laptop... and so I connect to all kinds of networks (some of them unsafe, most probably).

Word Processor Roundup / Re: Writing Software
« on: July 12, 2007, 03:11 PM »
The ease of tagging in Evernote seems like it might be very helpful for my needs

Especially if you rely on the "keyword filtering" functionality : just create small abbreviations that you can quickly enter in your texts (while you write) and associate these abbreviations with categories (properties-->filter--> "Automatically assign this category to all notes that have the following keywords:"

2505
I'd really like to meet you guys, but, like Darwin, I'm a Canadian... and I live in Montréal. It's a bit far. One day, maybe... Thanks for the invitation, mouser!

Hi all,

I'm sorry if I'm kind of hijacking this thread, but my question is pretty similar, so…

My kaspersky trial period has ended and I don't think that I'll buy the software. Every time I start my laptop, I have to wait between two and three more minutes before it becomes operational. I've tried everything — nothing will do (let's call it a bug). I've also had some weird slowdowns, and freezes. Nothing that I've experienced in the past with NOD32 trial. So I might just go back to it. The reason I abandonned the great NOD32 for Kaspersky was for the all-in-one solution: firewall/antivirus/spyware detection/etc.

Nowif I go back to NOD32, I won't have any spy ware detector or firewall. This is where I need some opinions...

I know that the Comodo firewall is pretty good (see http://www.matousec....ak-tests-results.php , for example), so is NOD32 (see http://www.av-comparatives.org/ )but what about the spyware aspect ?

Anybody uses a similar combination : NOD32, Comodo + ???? (spyware/adware preventer…)... Spysweeper???

Thanks to all who'll take the time to answer.

A.

Maybe something should be said about EverNote v2.1 to those who... haven’t upgraded on June 25th?

First, see this thread : https://www.donation...59.msg66740#msg66740
... Then look at these nice changes :

Public Release 2.1.0.327 (June 25, 2007)
New Features:

NEW NAVIGATION FUNCTIONALITY
•   Ability to sort the Note List and underlying tape notes by Note List's columns significantly simplifies navigation.
•   Category Intersection Panel can be opened from the View Menu.
•   New shortcuts have been added for Categories Window, Note Lock, Delete Note for keyboard-oriented users.

IMPROVED EDITING
•   Each note can be converted into a To-Do item with a new checkbox available in Note Bar.

•   Ability to specify target database has been added. It can be done either inside of the My.EverNote.com context menu or while clipping by holding Shift.
•   The Universal Clipper now determines whether EverNote is busy at the moment of clipping and sends an appropriate message (instead of previous "Can't clip" error message).
•   The highlighted screen area can be saved using the Ctrl+S shortcut.

NEW EXPORT AND IMPORT FUNCTIONALITY
•   New Import Wizard sets up automatic addition to the tape of the content from any folder and its subfolders, including folders on feature and camera phones connected via USB port.
•   Auto-import for POP3 emails has been added. It allows importing snapshots sent from camera phones.

MISCELLANEOUS
•   Silent installation mode for EverNote Clippers for Mozilla Firefox and Thunderbird has been added. Installations will be done for "current user" or for "all users" depending on the selection for the whole setup.
Bug Fixes & Improvements:

LOOK AND FEEL
•   Short/full note height is now saved in the note.
•   Screen location of the Notification Window is now saved in registry.

CATEGORIES
•   The ability to create sub-categories with the same name in different hierarchies has been restored.
•   Fixed a bug that prevented dropping keywords onto categories.
•   Fixed a bug that prevented a note from becoming "Uncategorized" after all assigned categories have been deleted.

EDITING
•   Fixed a bug that caused incorrect handling of the Ctrl-Alt-V shortcut in the full-screen editing mode.

NAVIGATION
•   Fixed mouse-wheel scrolling issues with IntelliMouse driver for Windows Vista.

EXPORT, IMPORT, AND BACKUP

•   Implemented automatic title generation for ink notes (in EverNote Plus only).
•   Fixed a bug that caused interruption of ink collection during auto-saving of the database.
•   Fixed a bug that caused EverNote crash after a long ink note has been created.

CLIPPING

All clippers
•   All EverNote Clippers are integrated with EverNote Outlook Extension.

EverNote Universal Clipper
•   Fixed a bug that caused unblocking Win+A while the Resize Selection dialog box is open.
•   Fixed a bug that caused Universal Clipper to crash if selection area was extended beyond the screen area using keyboard.
•   Fixed a bug that caused Clipper to always start minimized.
•   Fixed a bug which caused memory leaking after each insertion of captured image into the EverNote tape.
•   Fixed a bug that caused improper positioning of settings window in a multi-monitor mode.

•   Fixed a bug that assigned different titles to clips of whole mail and its portion.

INSTALLATION
•   The setup suggests to close Mozilla Firefox/Thunderbird before it can install/update/uninstall the EverNote Clippers for those applications.
•   Fixed a bug that prevented EverNote from starting under a limited user profile after a successful installation.
•   The setup checks disk existence if the media was changed during the installation.

MISCELLANEOUS
•   Help file has been updated for this release.
•   The seed database has been updated - all broken links in sample/welcome notes have been fixed and orphaned categories have been removed. Text Notes category has been removed.
•   Updated Demo Flash Movie - fixed typos and date format.
For more information also see the Known Problems page.

http://www.evernote....ote/releasenotes.php

I've put in red the bits that immediatly affected (or will affect) positively my work. The "ability to sort the Note List and underlying tape notes by Note List's columns" is probably the greatest addition. (Please note : I don't work for EverNote  :D )

Now… if only the next version could ...
- allow opening several windows of the same database
- have some kind of "commenting tool" / higlighter.
- allow to dellete/edit several categories at once
- allow adding multiple filters (properties --> filter tab ; right now you can only select one filter -- keywords OR history OR templates...)
I suggested that in the forum, but they didn't seem to think it was that important... Oh well. :)

Oups... Sorry.
Mouser, why did you unlock it?

I do wonder if some of the PDF/document management tools like Paperport or Presto!PageManager will start to have tags - I have an old version of each...

Well, let's hope that tag2find, or some other solution, will soon offer to tag… anything!!!

2510
Sorry I didn't put this precisely enough.
This is most likely a non-public beta and I'm not exactly sure who qualifies as a beta tester.

Thanks for the info!

I like locate also.  And for searching inside documents, archivarius.  Combine that with a good web capturing and notetaking tool like Evernote, or surfulater, or something else, and you have a pretty good overall system.

Hi superboyac. Buzy these days ?  :)

I don't want to duplicate posts so here's a link to what I've posted in that other thread.  I believe that it echoes with what you said (and to some of what has been said here too, in this huge thread. Nothing new maybe…).  I too am waiting for what zoot 32 bits is going to bring to the table...

Edit : Oups! Forgot the link  :)

I think if files are related but not as directly to belong to a common folder, it might be useful.  But when is that the case?
When would I want to use tagging?

In my research projets, this happens... ALL the time.

I'm using the same articles for different papers, I'm grouping the same files differently in different folders — depending on the project. Right now, I’m using shorcuts or even hard links to do that : what a drag. Shortcuts are just really inefficient.

I'd gladly use Ultra Recall, myBase or one of these, but the fact is that I feel imprisonned in them. They force me to use their own search engine (when I could use the much more powerfull Archivarius or X1 to search ALL my files), they “semi-force” me to move back in forth between their databases and my normal folders (which sometimes contains huge files that I don't wanna transfer), they generally don't have a “file Explorer” component that's as powerful as the other file explorers that are available for normal file exploring (Total Commander, directory opus, Xyplorer, ), they don't have renaming capacities that are as powerful than the one proposed by other softwares (BRU, Flash Renamer), They force me to discriminate between information that “should be” useful OR unuseful (because the only information searchable in their database is the information that I've… transferred to their database), while I prefer to have everything available as potentially useful, they always try to do all kinds of stuff that's uselessly duplicating other software that perfectly do the job, etc.

So, right now, my “information management” system is mainly composed of

1.   a notetaking software  (EverNote, despite some of its limitations — see the notetaking thread) where I can store and retrieve tidbits of information that I wouldn't put in individual files -- what a mess would it  be

2.   a good word processors with good  formatting and outlining capabilities (MS Word — yes… I'm just so used to it and it's very powerful whatever people say —and Open Office, sometimes), for structured information, OCRed documents, etc. + Excell for tables, etc.

3.   a good software to display information and map ideas in different ways (mindmanager / freemind)

4.   a good renaming software (BRU / Flash Renamer),

5.   a good PIM (outlook — yes, for it's Palm synching abilities — + MLO… but I'm currently evaluating Achieve Planner ; very promising, but some syncing problems and a tad slow, it seems),

6.   a good desktop search programs for deep searches (X1, mainly, but I just bought Archivarius for the times when X1 will not work the way I want…),

7.   a foolproof naming system (well, almost... I like long names… :) at least, they tell something precise about the file which is convenient for searching softwareS like FARR and locate… but long names don't allow me to use deep directory structures), and other deep searching software's like “Advanced Find and Replace” and “File Locator Pro”.

8.   a good launching and "quick searching" programs (Farr + Locate).
BUT, there are some component missing that you'll find in good softwares using some kind of "free-form" database systems (like Ultra Recall, Surfulater, AskSam, and even Evernote) : these are what could be called : virtual folders, file and folder "cloning" capacities (in some ways, similar to "hard linking" -- not vulnerable shortcuts that will become useless as soon as you rename or move a file, please!), easy tagging, etc.

So... comming back to what you said : a tagging system like tag2find could be used to create these so much needed virtual folders, and dependable links between files and folders (depending on the subject or the projetc). Right now, I put tags in my filenames, and while this is usually efficient, names can become absurdly long and it doesn't give any visual representation of anything (unlike to have a tree representation, or a mindmap, or tag clouds, etc. : the notetaking thread mentioned all the advantages of these representations and how they can always be useful depending on the situation). Anyway. so this is one reason why I still use folders (and try to use "hard links"), but it's far from ideal.

...Ahhh. I feel handicapped because I don't feel comfortable enough in English  : I'd have so many other things to say about tagging, virtual folders, the way NTFS is currently used to organize files and how it could be used (see the threads  on hard links, soft links, symbolic links, etc.). But probably nothing new though… :)

Well… if anybody has anything to comment on the subject… of tagging I mean (virtual folders, data organization subject)...

2513
Sounds robust, when I find a need for tagging I'll definately have a closer look :)

I've installed/uninstalled it a few times : I'm just following the feature/performance/ui progression right now.

A "new generation" is coming soon with some very very nice additions/changes. I'm waiting before I commit anything to it...

I predict that it's going to be a really good tagging solution. The developpers are very active, nice, listen to feedback, and are not willing to lock users into some kind of ugly proprietary system in which tags would be... emprisonned. (?)

2514
I can't find any use for my start menu. I only keep it around in the rare cases where i can't remember the name of the app i'm looking for.

Same thing here.

I am handicapped when it comes to the popular FARR: I have a visual oriented memory and cannot remember many program names. At least not when I want to use the program in mind! But I remember the exact location of the shortcut, and the look of the folder's icon!

This is one reason that makes the start Menu, even nowadays, an "important" interface (although I generally navigate to/in the Program Files folder instead…) for many people — and, as somebody else mentionned, it’s still a standard: il you happen to work on a “foreign” computer, and you don't have all your favorite portable apps on a thumbdrive, the start menu is always handy…

Before I knew FARR I did categorize my startmenu like SYSTEM, GAMES, Graphics...

But today I just use FARR as my first choice. the order of my startmenu doesn't interest me anymore.
Thanks to FARR

Yup. (And before Farr, back in 2003, I was using the address bar as a launchbar, manually entering all the links in my favorites... I was such a visionary  :D)

In my case, the only useful startmenu shortcut is… the shortcut to FARR.  :)
Just in case.

Interesting thought: farr could be categorized as a "start menu disorganizer".

My start menu is always sorted alphabetically — simple, easy to remember. I don’t like to change anything there because uninstallation routines will usually leave stuff behind when I move shotcuts around (and I generally install all software in the suggested folder — easy, fast…). It’s just a pure waist of time.

Sometimes I'll visit the startmenu, and see what I’ve installed and forget to test (A.D.D.?) (the “glowing” programs in the list… Most links to installed softwares are there. But then, when I really want to delve in the depth, like I said…I open "program files"). And then… I’ll sort the list and do something more interesting.

2515
I recently read about FastCopy in the other thread about TeraCopy. FC has an option to enable copying alternate  streams (NTFS). Researching what this means, NTFS can store additional data which can be extracted only by a few windows commands (it's not backwards compatible). commandline Copy and echo support this, so do third party tools. However Explorer's copy does not (meaning if you copy or move the file, the data is lost -- maybe vista does this better?).

This might be the possible reason why these kind of programs work like they do, if they indeed use these alternate data streams. :)

Justice : you're mentionning "alternate data streams" in relation to tagging/tag2finf, etc.?
Tag2find actually uses data streams + a database, and is able to keep track of filename changes, move, folder changes, etc.

We do not really make a very big secret out of how our tags are stored: at the moment they are stored in two locations: a system-wide tag-database (SQLite) and attached as Alternate Data Stream to the file itself (which is the reason why we can only support NTFS at the moment). Tags can be recovered from backup or the NTFS Alternate Data Stream in case the central database corrupts (which is highly unlikely). Alternate Data Streams are copied together with a file by Windows Explorer, as long as the target volume supports them.
http://forum.tag2find.com/ftopic85.html

A service is also constantly running in the background.

2516
There should be a beta of Zoot v. 5 (32 bit) coming these days, at last.

Nice. I guess I'll just wait then

However, I did register for the beta testers list a while ago, but didn't get any notice up to now.

There seem to be a great deal of suspens around the development of Zoot 5...

2517
Have decided to try Zoot, for the fun of it. Unfortunately I get this error after about 10 min. :

"The Win 16 Subsystem has insufficient resources to continue running. Click on OK, dose your applications, and restart your machine"

Never had that before with any other programs. I must admit that I don't use any 16-bit app.

Oh well.  :)

2518
I am not a regex expert, and so it took me a while to understand why my alias list blanked out... It's the "â" character. But, strangely, the "eotâsp" doesn't cause any problems. Anyhow. If someone knows why...

P.S. Mouser, by the way : since you fixed the "farr hanging" bug, I haven't got one BSOD. It could be just coincidence, but doesn't seem like it... ( 98% of the time, BSODs happened while using FARR) I am now a VERY happy camper.

2519
Curt, what search engines were you using before embracing Wilma ?

2520
Armando, that tao of backup is a nice find

Yes, I like it too, even if it was first meant to publicize a now abandoned software (I believe -- I might be wrong). It summarizes all the fundamentals (and more) in a simple and humoristic way. Some advices might be a bit too much for the home user (it's not always easy to backup off site everyday-- because of bandwidth limit, connection speed, etc.), but it’s better to know what could happen if you’re not careful with your backups.

This link, http://www.taobackup.com/sanctuary.html, is better than the one I first provided (which makes the site map almost invisible at first sight).

2521
'vista glance' by Konstantin Artemev supports tagging of any file. it's a bit like 'find and run robot'.

the tagging feature isn't perfect in that it's easy to break the tagging association by simply moving the file to a different location using explorer (maybe this will be fixed in an update).

here's the link: http://www.vistaglance.com/

Tag2find uses a more appropriate way of tagging. Links don't get broken.

tag2find looks good but I was at work when I tried it and my work computer's filesystems are FAT, and tag2find doesn't support that. So I tried tagg, and it seems to work fine with FAT filesystems  ;D

Guess I'll try tag2find on my box at home.

tagg2find will most probably be able to work on Fat32 soon. Have a look at their forum and blog.
I also have some posts there.  http://forum.tag2find.com/

Tag2find works really well. If only it was already more integrated with other existing desktop search software and explorer. The next version will.

I, like several others, posted about tags in several places in he DC Forum

2522
I installed Ultra Explorer 2 week ago and... was impressed too.

BUT... The only problem is that it crashes very often on my PC (and I lost my configuration each time it did).

Anybody experienced crashes?

2523
There are several ways of doing that. I used to do what Perry is doing -- which is probably the best way : most projects fit well on a DVD/CD. But, for me, it became a mess when I quickly needed some files from an archive, changed them, etc. But this is just me and my absentmindedness. Since 2004, I just compress an image of my documents partition, split on several DVDs, every 6 months (or when I start to feel nervous about loosing something  :) ) and archive them in a big drawer I hope I'll never have to use...

My backup strategy is pretty much in line the "tao of backup" advices ( http://www.taobackup.com/ ).

Edit : of course, what I've explained here is only the archiving part of my backup strategy... the whole thing is more sophisticated and involves multiple HDs, images, increments, etc.

General Software Discussion / Re: Semi-Automated file naming
« on: June 17, 2007, 12:08 PM »
Thanks for sharing your techniques!

Assuming you don't compile your AHK scripts, then they're interpreted, and exist as plain text files.

Yes, that's exactly what I do too. I also use a line to edit my script on the fly:

^+!e::Edit

Here are some general tags I use, entered in AutoHotkey. they are all identified with "normal" words to make my "human reading" easier... :

; Organisation
:oc:corgn::tgsCorgn

; Philosophie
:oc:cphie::tgsCphie

; Physique
:oc:cphye::tgsCphye

; Psychologie
:oc:cpsye::tgsCpsye

(Like I said earlier, my usage of AutoHotkey here is mostly 1- to add accuracy to my spelling when I insert tags -- it accelerates a bit the inserting of the tags, but not that much, 2- to always have and updated list of all the tags I use. I use these tags in conjunction with EverNote (using keyword filtering), X1 and Copernic, to name a few.)

Thanks for the SLAVE_3.03.exe idea: I'll check that out.

I've dabbled a little with both 1-4A and with Lupas, but now use the excellent multi-rename tool built into my file manager, Total Commander (TC).  It does far more than I need at present.

I haven't tried these yet... but I played quite a bit with Flexible Renamer and Rename Master before "settling" on Bulk Rename Utility. Trying XYplorer and TC (even if they are completely different beasts altogether) is on my todo list.

I'm also still trying to find out about the different ways to tag files (the file itself and/or its content) : tried four or five different softwares, but coming back to inserting the tags directly in the file names, as I always did. It seems like the only way that's fully portable and durable. If the tagging (and the file naming) is very systematic and rigorously "coded", then utilities like BRU and PowerGrep (I've only tried the latest once) can be used to make changes to tags in multiple files all at once.

Anyway... I'll try to summarize my whole strategy when it's a bit more stable.

2525
I like having all my reading notes in one place, where they're easy to find : my hard drive.

Off course, that also means having a backup solution you can trust... I trust mine, but as my 500gb hard drive gets fuller...
