how can I convert swf files to avi?
« on: July 16, 2007, 03:07 AM »
i found this rather strange that some swf video (particularly ones created with camtasia screencast) that i view will use extraordinarily large amount of memory as it's playing..

an example of such problem: when i view dragdroprobot2 video in this page using "barebone" firefox
https://www.donation...agDrop/DragDrop.html

i was shocked to see in taskmanager that firefox memory usage almost hit 300mb as the video is playing in the browser..what is wrong?

is there any tool to convert the swf flash video to avi so i can view it in avi video instead? i want to watch the remaining part of the video where i had to end task at that point

I am not too sure there is anything wrong with the DragDrop swf file. The memory usage in each of GreenBrowser, Firefox, Maxthon, K-Meleon and Internet Explorer 7 - each at a time showing the flash - was merely some 300 kb, not mb.
300.000 k = 300 Kilo

I had a second look at your flash file and I am positive it is all right. The file is 7.29 MB which not is much   consider it is almost ten minutes. If you want it  I can mail it to you  as a screensaver, but it is 7.17 MB so you will need a @gmail or Pando account. They are free.
 :tellme:

Edit: DragAndDrop.zip : 6.88MB

cdblu, there is no file format that can make this swf file play any easier. Any problems must be in your Internet browser / browser's apps, or PC, as swf is The Smallest video file format you can have - flash or not.

If it helps at all...

SWF video is usually 15 fps, & there are a couple of codecs used. TO convert SWF to avi, the easiest way I've found personally is with Super; swf to avi isn't the most common or popular conversion. For a light weight player of saved swf on your hdd, you might look at SWF Opener. With 6 tabs open, playing the linked swf file, Firefox in TaskMgr showed 211,000kb -- in SWF Opener, it got to about 131,000kb. If I had to guess (which is what I'm doing  :) ), I'd say part of it was the codec implementation Camtasia used, though that is just a guess. I opened a flv I had (the actual Shockwave format video in an SWF) and it was in the 17,000 kb range. If you watch TaskMgr though you'll also see the memory usage go up along with frame numbers... The linked video has a large frame, & as the amount of visual data increases, so does the memory to hold it.

While it's possible some other software of DS filter could be effecting playback, in the end I'm inclined to mostly blame the Flash video format -- as codecs or formats go it's at or near the bottom, & the only thing going for it is people tend to hate MS, so it has the 2nd most available player. :P

I will second that SUPER may be one of the finest converters you can have, but to call it "the easiest way"? No, I cannot second that! It took me a long time to learn how to use SUPER the best way, and during that process I found quite a number of converters that would do the job   as good or even better   easier. Anyhow; there was no problem with the flash file which started this thread. My guess is that the "300.000" he saw in TaskManager made him think it ...[deleted nonsense]. I tested the file, and it was all normal.

1. FLV Convert by James Hansen (aka Qjimbo)

"Description: Using ffmpeg, this program acts as a frontend which allows you to convert FLVs to MPEG or AVI"

Discussion at http://forum.doom9.o...ex.php/t-104183.html

2. Online FLV Converter (I have not tried this service yet)

3. Good info on .flv file converterss at http://1024k.de/book...eo-bookmarklets.html (Scroll down the page)

Aunsoft swf converter can just do this trick. It can convert flash videos to avi, mpeg, wmv, mp3, aac, etc. Moreover, you can crop the SWF file and choose start time before the conversion and choose the frame you would like to end during frame capturing.

SWF Flash Animation file to AVI?
Tried a question earlier about how to export an AVI file from flash 8 with it looking just as good as a SWF file but didn't get too much response. Curious now if there is just a program that can convert SWF to AVI easily. Downloaded and tried at least 5 programs, none worked. Any helps appreciated

SUPER © or MediaCoder should do it.

I'd try MediaCoder first.

You can try iWisoft swf flash to video converter. I haven't used it before, but my friend has and he said it works pretty well.
