I understnad this will make a usb bootable xp setup, like a cd/dvd.

I was looking for something like,
1. boot from usb
2. start Xp
3. more or less all standard options
4. access hdd for document files
5. all xp required files shd be in usb itself

Now that usb size are going GB and above, latest computer / laptops having os win 8 and above, I am finding it difficult to show the xp screen and control panels etc. as given in my son's school books.

It is difficult to show him Win 8.1 control panel and tell him think it is Xp control panel !!

My old Xp machine has conked and repairing it is costing more that a new Win 8 machine.

Any idea how I can get it ?

Regards,

Anand

It's hard to justify buying WinToFlash at any price when the excellent Rufus exists and is freeware.

Provided you still have your XP media, the easiest way to achieve what you want to do might be to use VirtualBox on your Windows 8.1 machine that will allow you to run XP in a virtual machine. XP will still be XP...just running in a window.

You can get a free key here:
http://www.mostiwant...version-license-key/

It works with the pro version from the publisher's site.  No free updates or support though.

No free updates or support though.

Another limitation is that the license expires:
The Giveaway license is only good up to December 31, 2015.

I would assume that bootable USB devices created would not expire though. You just won't be able to create new ones (or maybe the software reverts to the free version with ads?).

I don't know.  They do so many variations on these giveaways.  Not that this one does me much good.  Unfortunately my Laptop does not have the combination setting of Legacy plus UEFI booting. It is one or the other.  Windows 7 x64 install USB I made with Rufus boots if I have legacy enabled, until I get to the reboot part.  Then I get the "please insert bootable media" message.  If I flip it the other way only the HD boots.  Can't win.  And since it will not successfully run a Restore Point I have given up on experimental booting.  I guess I'm lucky the Rescue USB  made by Macrium works.

It is too bad.  I was hoping to boot into VHD with this thing instead of running super slow software VMs.

Since there is a free (registered)version without ads I don't think it likely the giveaway pro version degrades to free with ads after the license deadline(I saw the comments section but the answer seems cavalier to me.) More likley the license key will not work to register the software after that time.  The only way to know for sure would be to contect the publisher.  I would be ccurious to see how this tool compares to Rufus but I don't have the system for testing this type of utility at the moment.

Installed VirtualBox and WinXp on it.

I am happy  :D Thanks a lot. In full screen WinXp looks like normal Xp machine and my son can understand the control panels correcly. Though the help was wanting Google helped in most cases. Also VirtualBox ver. 5 is better if not best from earlier version, as I found out.

I now feel this is better approach than the Xp boot usb.
1. I get to work in same file both from Win8 64 bit and WinXp, via shared folder.
2. No reboot
3. I can check my programs in Xp as a separate machine without all default installations in main machine. This helps to find out all missing dlls.
4. Can check my 16 bit programs, before converting them. My OS is 64 bit

Anand
