Interesting article on ZDNet ... get the impression MS don't want to have an Open Source format - but if there is it should be so complicated no one will ever be able to use it ?

I'm personally pretty tired of OpenOffice (way too slow startup, even on my dualcore machine), and the later versions of MS Office (way too bloated). I'm considering playing around with http://www.lyx.org/ when I get the time, since I don't personally need MS Office interoperability.

Hmmm ... did you read the article - nothing to do with OpenOffice

Hm, I thought OpenDocument was what OpenOffice uses... XML and all that.

Anyway, 4081 pages does seem like a lot. I wonder if they have a complete description of XML in there as well, and not just the schemas

I think the article is describing a project to develop an OpenDocument format. The 4081 page document is MS's submission on how such a format should be designed.

So did you had the time to try out Lyx? I too download it to try, but find it very inflexible. But the output is really nice....

Yep, it's a bit too heavy to dance with imho, and I sorta feel more comfortable write LaTeX stuff with notepad++. It's just so kludgy dealing with images and a couple of other things >_<.
