Perhaps change the I-Beam cursor to something else that is easier to see?

My personal favorite is an animated one that just cycles through some color changes that makes it easier to see, regardless of the color background that is behind it.

Try the jc-i-beam.ani cursor from the set attached to this post.

This is a very old set. The creator's website doesn't exist any more, but the readme in the zip did say redistribution is ok.
