Any fluent Russians here? (Light Alloy related)
« on: November 13, 2010, 12:50 PM »
I still insist that Light Alloy is one of the best video players out there.  It's my favorite at least.  I'm glad to know that it is still being pretty actively developed, but only for the Russian community.  The only way I can follow is to google-translate the forums and do my best with the weird sentences that are converted.  I wouldn't mind if someone who actually spoke russian could just give me the basic jist of what was going on.  Here's the most recent version thread:
http://www.light-all...lloy_v4_5_build_519/

Anyway, like I said it's still being developed at a decent pace.  The program is well designed, I only have a couple of nitpicks.  Interestingly enough, I think the developer is considering adding all the codecs internally to the program (like VLC, KMP) so you don't have to search for missing codecs.  But he is weighing that against bloating the program and such.  In my opinion, I say package everything inside.  If it's just a matter of the install file going from 10mb to 30mb, who really gives a shit?  It's not like everyone doesn't have plenty of space and bandwidth to cover that these days.

How's it compared with Potplayer?

Light Alloy been my favorite player for years now.  I made a big thread about a bunch of players here:
https://www.donation...ex.php?topic=20880.0

Potplayer/KMplayer have more options than Light Alloy.  They also both can play pretty much anything you throw at it without needing to download additional codecs.  Light Alloy does NOT come with the codecs installed.  So why is it my favorite, you might ask?  It's because it's fast.  When you double-click on a video file in your file manager, I found that Light Alloy starts playing it more quickly than the other players.  It's just built for speed and simplicity.  There are enough options.

Potplayer is good, I've been trying it out lately.  But it's still definitely beta right now.  My biggest problem is the interface...there's no skin that gets rid of all the korean text.  I need english.  There were also a couple of other weird things about it that I don't remember right now.  It was buggy, also.  It gave me a lot of errors when I threw a variety of files at it.

Are you sure you have the *English* version of PotPlayer? :D Seriously though, there do appear to be at least 1 or to of the "_en" skins that come with the English version that have no Korean (or Russian) text, for example fl2_en or zoom6_en. Interesting that they have skins that emulate all the other major players too (including VLC - why would you want to do that? lol).

It would be good to understand Russian, but https://www.hostedre.../issues?set_filter=1 is a fine place to begin. Less to translate to understand, yet it tells most of what you would like to know.

Well, actually it's not. In our forums, http://www.light-all...y.ru/forum/index.php, you can see 'Choose your language' dropdown, so you can easily change forum display language, and post any you want in 'English support forum' thread. I actually allow to post even in sections of forum where mostly people speak in russian, but it's just because no one seems to post in English section of forum, so I don't create new english sections(for bugs, suggestions, icons, plugins, skins and so on).

And, about bug tracker. We don't use hostedredmine anymore, now we swtiched to sourceforge bugtracker - http://sourceforge.n...projects/lightalloy/ (click on Tickets there)

Sorry for my bad English :)
