Five years ago, I wrote a story called “25 Things I Hate About Google.” (...) I thought it was worth revisiting that story on its five year anniversary, to see how many of those “hates” have been fixed.
(...)
In my story below, I’ll provide what I originally wrote and how the situation looks today. Each section will begin “Hate” if things haven’t changed, “Love” or “Like” if there’s been a fix, and there are some “Mixed” and “N/A” along the way.

This article reaffirms my general, vague dislike for google search. I have not really compared google to my favorite search engine duckduckgo. But DDG feels much better than google search.

It's quite an exhaustive revisit, but there is a scorecard at the end, so you don't have to read the whole thing :)

So it would seem:
Where do you get your results?

From over 30 sources, including DuckDuckBot (our own crawler), crowd-sourced sites (in our own index), Yahoo! "BOSS", "embed.ly", "WolframAlpha", "EntireWeb", "Bing" & "Blekko".

Suddenly I care much less about DDG. Thought they were doing something truly new, but turns out they're largely just an aggregator basically. I wonder how much DuckDuckBot actually contributes...

And Bing uses Google Search results...

Let's see if I remember my math correctly: If A => B and B => C then A => C.

Bing is not using google's algorithm that's why bing managed to survive the panda update. Panda update to new google algorithm made the search quality worst. Still google claims that bing copies their results but i don't see it that way, bing is still relevant whereas google is mobbed by ehow/about.com results. About.com and ehow made pages to generate pageviews with literally 1-5% of useful information and rest is crap.

Try this for example, 'phoenix haiku' in both google and bing. Bing gives you result for exact poetry/haiku related searches. Google gives you map of haiku restaurant and few other vague places on the internet that has nothing to do with meaning of haiku.

I use Scroogle as my default search engine, but I don't like how it breaks some of the useful Google search tools.

i.e. "define: [word]" doesn't work. Neither do conversions like "8 cups in fluid ounces" or "9 USD in EUR" when using Scroogle. So sadly, Scroogle isn't really "just Google, but without all the tracking."
