What do YOU do to keep your head cold when coding?
« on: February 26, 2010, 03:16 AM »
Just a phunny topic for you to answer  :-*

My Entry:

When Im getting pissed off when coding, I use these methods to stop raging :

- Ctrl+X the whole part of the code to notepad and after that, I start coding something very different to the same project and after cooldown, I just     paste the cutted code back and try again.

- I`ll take a long breath and stretch a little and after that, I open my Sony Vegas and start editing random vid for while.

- Seeking inspiration from YouTube.

- Etc.

I smoke, I've done so for years, and it works well for me - Sit back, have a smoke, relax, & keep going. Much unlike the alternatives, smoking doesn't make you suicidal ... Which is why I maintain that cigarettes are much better for your health than anti-depressants. ;)

Weather permitting, I take a walk. Otherwise a shower, wash dishes, do laundry, or any other physical task that doesn't take a lot of thought.

Seems that stepping away from the computer and putting myself in motion, physically, releases enough of the stress so that when I return, I feel much better and more relaxed.

And since I am doing things that don't involve much thought, the brain can still actively work on the problem while I am away from the computer.

I think they are lying. The truth is they have a nasty bug and they are burning off the frustration.

I prefer that the physical task should not take too long like > 30 mins cause you`d totally lose the thing you were coding - Unlike < 30 mins, you technically "Quick Refresh" your brains so you can think more clearly.

Depends on how "quick & brainless" I want the break to be.

if Quick and brainless  then a few rounds of Snood //*similar to Frozen-Bubble*//
else  [chat with GF | play with dog]; ;D

What I do depends on a bit on why I get "frustrated" with the code. Sometimes I need to step back and sit with my drawing board and/or pen&paper for a while to scratch down ideas and diagrams. Other times, I just need a short break and wander around in my flat scratching my beard...

And sometimes I need a longer break, I'll usually go outside for a walk. Or realize that it's close to midnight and that I better fix dinner ;P

Actually I use fresh air from open window (not on the PC).  :)
