Has anybody ever tried a FON router?

Does anyone here at DonationCoder use a Fonera router ( www.fon.com/en/ ) ?



I keep seeing write-ups for this little gadget, and I'm wondering if it's half as good as I keep hearing it is.

For those of you who don't know, a version of this router made a splash a while ago. It's claim to fame was that it could upload and download files independently - without needing to remain connected to a computer while it was doing so. The new version sports some even more intriguing features.

So...anybody out there own one?

No experience but just wanted to add that a great thing is that the new version support even some 3G USB dongle. At the price it's a bargain for a 3G / WiFi router.

don't own one personally, Darren over at hak5 has one, and in this episode, he talks about it. He doesn't use it for what its designed for, but this episode talks about one thing you can do with it.

Some of you may be familiar with Fon and the Fon movement. Fon is a company that sells (used to give em out for free) wireless routers for a pretty cheap price. Catch is, you have to agree to share you internet via the wireless network made by the Fon router. Thanks to the Open Source community, alternative firmware is available. Among the choices are DD-WRT, OpenWrt, and Legend which are all Linux based. Although the flashing process is not easy, the payoff is worth it.
