HowTo get back 'Image Dimensions' in Explorer?
« on: August 24, 2008, 11:55 AM »
Having removed a couple of dozen programs yesterday I suddenly realize that the Explorer > folder view > details > column 'Image Dimensions' have stopped working. It is there, the column, but is not showing any image dimensions, no matter the extension.

The only solution that I know of is  to make sure that HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT > .jpg >  Value: 'PerceivedType' > String Data: image is checked (for each file type) - and this is a problem, because while the brother .JPEG have this listed okay, all of my images are .JPG, and for .JPG there is at the moment no 'Perceived Type' at all. I have absolutely no idea about how to both create a new AND tell the string data to be 'image' - the default seems to always be four zeros.

Do you know HowTo fix it and give me back my 'Image Dimensions' in XP's Explorer?
Or do you know of some (freeware) program that will (also) solve this problem of mine?

--- JPEG is listing "PerceivedType" but is not showing any image dimensions, either:

--- JPG is not even showing the "PerceivedType":

--- How it should be:

--- and how it is:

Is the "Dimension" box in the "Choose Details" dialog checked?

Try to (re)register shimgvw.dll (Start --> Run --> type regsvr32 shimgvw.dll in the box and click OK (A message should come up with DllRegisterServer in shimgvw.dll succeeded). If that fails to fix the "Dimension" problem, copy the following to notepad, save as imagefix.reg file and then double click on it to merge.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.jpg]
"PerceivedType"="image"

Thanks a lot for your efforts, Phil

However, it seems there must be something different wrong. First, the shimgvw.dll did register okay, but made no difference. Secondly, PerceivedType is now showing up nicely, but made no difference, either.

I might go and see if I can find yet another program to intall...

 :-[  :(  >:(

Today I removed PhotoPerfect ["PP"], and a variant of the same problem happened. This time it is the very File Type that is wrong. When PP was removed the .JPG images' thumbnails (from Xentient) immediately changed to a camera, and the listed .JPG file type all changed into "Microsoft Digital Image Document"!

The fixes from Phil will change the "Percieved Type" but not the "File Type".

Please, what to do now?  :tellme:

Edited:
I should clarify that the extension still is .JPG

Hmm... I now realize that this file type, Microsoft Digital Image Document, merely comes from MS Digital Image Starter 2006 - which I had forgotten about. I will start by removing that program, reinstall Xentient, and maybe also install another editor, and then we will see.

Removing Starter 2006 package helped, the visible file type in Explorer changed into the proper "JPG-File", but the .jpg icon was the same as Notebook's!, and when I looked in Folder Options > File Types, there was no ".jpg" listed at all!! I clicked "Change", and suddenly everything was in order again!!! Hmm... strange, but What the heck, now it is okay. Thanks for reading, and Sorry for taking up your time!!!!

Edited:
I forgot to make it clear that I am still missing the Image Dimensions.

Re-reading this thread, I cannot believe I never asked the more logical question:
"What programs will add "Image Dimensions" to the Explorer columns?"

You see, the problem is still there: I have the column, Dimensions, but they are not listed:

By now I have absolutely no recall of the names of those program I removed some weeks ago, so I can't re-find the program - at least, I have not yet been able to. I guess it merely was a DLL, but I don't KNOW.

Are you having such a column in your image folder? From where did you get it?
Could you name some programs that add this feature? Maybe I can recognise the name as something familiar!
I really want to get back those Image Dimensions!

Curt,
I've only skimmed this thread, so I might have missed this suggestion elsewhere.  Have you tried installing Xnview (link)?

- I had to see if XnView had come up with new features I didn't know about. XnView is good, it is very good, and fast, but it still doesn't add Image Dimensions to Explorer. Yes, it will tell the dimensions if you right-click an image, but that is not the feature I am looking for.

It is a little strange to me how easily I can have these columns in Explorer tell me just about anything, but the dimensions.

As you can see, I already have "Image Dimensions" listed, but it is not working. However, it used to work, a month or so ago, when I had another program / DLL installed / registered. Back then I had two "Image Dimensions" listed, but only one of them would work. I kept the wrong program!

So:
"What programs will add "Image Dimensions" to the Explorer columns?"
