Force firefox to display a page it wants to download?
« on: January 23, 2008, 08:15 PM »
It's been bugging me now for a while, but this time I've resolved to actually try to do something about it. Certain types of plain text files are not displayed in firefox, but rather prompt the user to download them. This annoys me most when you're scouring the net for source, and every c/cpp file you come across you have to download to view. I am tired of this behavior and would like to know if anyone is aware of a way to view a given filetype in-browser despite any file associations or headers. Please reply to this thread if you have a solution for this.

Thanks, Ehtyar.

Open In Browser is the PERFECT solution, I had this totally idyllic solution worked out in my head, and this is pretty much it. Thank you very much lanux!!

Use Download Statusbar - tons of options :) (including showing the size of total download, amnt. downloaded so far, time remaining, percent done, and tons more - in this 100x20 bar that sits at the bottom of your screen!)

I do, and love it naturally. My problem is seeing the file size BEFORE i choose to download it, as any other browser does....

Not sure then. I don't really care when I download files, because if I am downloading it it means I want it, so I don't mind if it takes like 4 hours to download 3 or so GB. :-\

Well, everything is explained there. As you can add custom apps to the list of those ones that can be used Launchy, you can define a list of extensions usually associated with downloads, and use as the app the one linked there. So, when you encounter a file you want to download, you select Get File Size in the Launchy entry integrated in the context menu in Firefox, and theoretically the program will give you the details on the download and allow you to get the file from the program. In theory :)

In practice it would probably just be easier to let th download start and check the file size on download statusbar and cancel it if it's too big or whatever. But thank you, and I think this add-on may be of help in other scenarios.

I was referring to the one that displays the download details in the statusbar on mouseover. The other one (that lets you run external apps) I'm not sure how to apply to fox my problem.
