I have recently found and now using a free video editor by Pinnacle,
VideoSpin. The program is actually very nice, for free. Several transitions and titles are provided.

The only shortcomings are: the Pinnacle Studio ad next to the preview/library window (see above screenshot) and sometimes it can be difficult to position clips. The program is free, and also includes a free 15-day trial of the MPG/MPEG file export option. If you want to enable it after 15 days, you will have to upgrade to the Studio version
