One just needs to watch the CNBC show on the rise of Google to see how far they have gone. They (Google) admitted they sell their info to large corporations.

They admitted to selling info? WTH happened to "Do no evil"???

That is enough to stop me from using their site(s), At least with the Bing search you can turn off the history, and in their small print say they only store data 72 hours. That's what they say anyway.

I've tried Bing and it just doesn't bring in the results for me like Google does so I still use Google, but I use a bundle of Firefox extensions that keep me & my surfing habits safe. Every time I make a search on Google I appear as a separate distinct user. Good luck aggregating my data, evil denizens of Google!  :D

Looks like a good program, but it doesn't look like $50 worth of programming to me. I think I'll wait for a sale before I pick it up.

General Software Discussion / Re: What to use to back up 1:1 ?
« Last post by Innuendo on May 30, 2010, 09:21 AM »
I want an image but I don't want an "image" file format; it too is proprietary, I imagine (sorry!). I want a 1:1 copy; a clone (not of the drive sectors, but of the files)! Preferably it should offer automatic, silent, incremental updates of the back up.  What should I use?

If you want an actual backup program and not a file synchronizer you may want to look at Genie Backup Manager Home. While it has an 'image' file format you don't have to worry about proprietary file structures because the images are easily converted into standard zip archives whenever you wish.

When you hit the unsubscribe link in their email you will be taken to their "Service Letter Management" page where you can make changes to your subscriptions including the frequency of the emails.

Tried that. Didn't work. It got to the point I had their "Service Letter Management" page memorized & could probably navigate it blindfolded. The emails just...would...not...stop.

EDIT: Oh...looks like I have a "kill on the server" filter in my email program for their stupid newsletters. Maybe they never stopped and they're *still* coming. Whatever...at least I don't have to lay eyes on one ever again.

sorry, I never understood this complaint. Click "unsubsribe". End of story.

In a perfect world it would have been end of story, but in my case I'd get emails from them every day & every day I'd click unsubscribe & go through the removal process. A week later the emails from them were still coming so I'd unsubscribe again. A week later, repeat the process. I started trying to unsubscribe after a week of their emails. The deluge finally stopped 8 months later & after a bajillion unsubscribe requests.

Never again.

-but the picture tells something different (@hotline-service.de)(maybe "you" will check inside a genuine Alcohol 120% and see who is really dealing with support?):

That's very interesting. I've never heard of such a thing before. Furthermore, I've never heard of hotline-service.de, either. Thanks for the info, but I'm not sure if I was more or less confused before you 'enlightened' me.

I'm a little leary of this. The official web site for Alcohol 120% is http://www.alcohol-soft.com and the latest version on the official site is v2.

EDIT: Thanks to Curt's explanation it is some weird versioning for the German market only.

Huh? Alcohol 120% has only just recently reached version 2. Where'd you get v7, Curt??

It would be nice if Pac-man could eat away the new Google Search Sidebar.

A GreaseMonkey script will fix that right up for you. :)

But when they do it, don't they have to give you the chance to opt-out?

No, because the words Stoic Joker just typed are usually followed by words that mean essentially: We reserve to change this EULA without having to notify anybody of anything anytime anywhere.

However, when I think back on the various blue screens, or more correctly when I think at what happened the seconds before the blue screens, I think I remember that at least 3 out of 4 times, I was just about to enter some homepage. Well, today I was changing the settings inside AnVir Task Manager Pro, and the following words that I never read or understood before  suddenly made new sense to me:

Glad you got your system working, Curt....if you hadn't doubted my words in post #5 in this thread we would have gotten to the bottom of this problem sooner. :)

Total Commander will do this if you are looking for a general purpose tool that does this.

Beyond Compare will also do this if you are looking for a single purpose tool that does this.

(Oddly enough, they are both roughly the same price, although TC has free lifetime updates & BC doesn't.)

Although you could buy Portal separately on Steam (I think it was being sold for $15), most people bought The Orange Box, which apart from Portal, included a few trinkets, like Team Fortress 2 and the entire Half-Life 2 saga.

I didn't know it was part of the Orange Box (Half-Life isn't my 'thang') or that it sold for just $15. I thought it was sold as a $40+ game and yeah...if they would have done that they deserve to be punished.

But...they didn't...so...nevermind.

I'm confused...is the little fuzzy creature you, Mouser, spreading flower petals in appreciation of Skrommel's efforts? Orrrrr...is the little fuzzy creature Skrommel & the flower petals are artistic representations of his apps being distributed to the masses? :)

The game is only 3-4 hours long? :(

Close one, Valve!!! You were -=><=- *THIS* close to getting me to finally cave and install the Steam client.

Ha! Narrow escape!

Seriously, though...the game is that short and they sold it for how much originally? Game publishers like that deserve to go under.

General Software Discussion / Re: HowTo repair/replace tcpip.sys ?
« Last post by Innuendo on May 15, 2010, 03:46 PM »
I'm 99% positive it's a device driver causing the problem. If your NIC and modem drivers are up to date then also check your devices and see if there's an address or interrupt conflict.

Which goes back to my original diagnosis that tcpip.sys almost never the culprit even if the blue screen specifically mentions it. The problem can almost always be traced back to something trying to access tcpip.sys in an inappropriate manner.

@Curt - Go to Device Manager and see what it says under Network Adapters. The brand/chipset name of the driver and the version # it's using is always the easist place to look.

(Early Realtek network drivers were gawd-awful & caused crashes like the one you're having all the time.)

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: Steam Sale: 50% off Guild Wars Trilogy
« Last post by Innuendo on May 14, 2010, 07:48 PM »
And why? Because games disappear, so even if you dont have time to play it now, if you want to explore it some day you better grab it while it is still findable...

I know many people desperate for System Shock 2 or Planescape Torment (that finally got rereleased). I have both, and I played both :)

I can definitely see the logic in this when it comes to a lot of games, but not Guild Wars. One day, some day, the servers are going to be turned off so when this game is impossible to find there'll be no way to play it anyway.

Yes, Oupost may indeed be the problem...

Outpost is definitely not your problem, my friend. I run it over here all day every day with no tcpip.sys weirdness.

Wait till you see v7...I'm a beta tester & v7 really takes things to the next level in protection/prevention.

I think the lesson I'm taking away from this scenario is that these game companies endorse & readily embrace the use of cracked/hacked/reverse-engineered executables on their games & therefore I shall use them with impunity and no guilt regarding their products.

I do wonder if there were ever a court case and such information were entered into evidence if a judge would share my views.

General Software Discussion / Re: an entire drive suddenly missing!
« Last post by Innuendo on May 06, 2010, 10:32 PM »
Curt, first thing I'd do is replace that cable. The cable may be starting to fail. It might not be, but it's cheap insurance.

As for the DNS-323, I have one & I love it. I don't use the RAID capabilities as some of the earlier firmware versions had bugs so I have each drive set up as a separate drive letter & just run an automated script on the unit (google dns-323 and funplug) to copy what I want backed up from one drive to the other internal to the device.

At least when I bought it, the DNS-323 had the fastest transfer rates of any NAS in its price range.
