Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: Start Program after x minutes of idle.
« Last post by Deozaan on April 27, 2006, 07:35 PM »
IdleMute is pretty close to what you after.

you can also run start the screensaver and password protected it.

Thanks kimmchii! I thought IdleMute was only for muting the speakers. I don't want to have to resort to passwords because I'd like adults to be able to use the computer. They know better than to type around inside my programs. Once I figure out how IdleMute works, though, it might be perfect for ToddlerTrap.

Although it might still be nice to have an IdleRun (kind of an oxymoron, there) which allows me to schedule multiple programs at different idle times and the ability to close them once activity is restored. If someone is up to the task I would gladly make a donation.

I know something like this was already done here, https://www.donationcoder.com/forum/index.php?topic=1328.0, but I want something that operates much like a screensaver -- runs a program after your computer is idle for a determinable amount of time.

This would be great for Skrommel's ToddlerTrap: https://www.donationcoder.com/Software/Skrommel/index.html#ToddlerTrap

Often I will step away for just a second (yeah right) to help someone with something and it ends up being more than a few minutes before I return to my computer only to find out that the little monkies are clicking around and typing. This is terrible when I leave while I'm in the middle of programming because these monkies don't eat their fleas; they put the bugs right into my programs.

Maybe an additional (and optional) feature would be to close the program when it's active again (not good for ToddlerTrap, but maybe good for other programs like Azureus). And it might be nice to be able to run more than one program at different idle times.

I'd prefer a little program that I can put in my startup folder that has a tray icon to access the settings.

Living Room / Re: Earth. Overpopulated or not?
« Last post by Deozaan on April 27, 2006, 02:49 PM »
Until there is sufficient (if not equal) food for all, I consider this planet grossly overpopulated.  While I understand even in old times, someone (probably a dumbass lost in the woods, and evolutionarily deserving to die as something other than "the strongest) would starve to death -- but bottom line is, when entire nations are starving there's a problem.  Space is not an indication of vacancy -- Adding a city block worth of space to an over-crowded restaurant may bring it within fire code, but it won't increase the potential patronage without first accommodating many other needs -- kitchen, staff, consumables and tables not withstanding.

"Earth" and "Population" are much more than a ratio of earth mass to man mass.  There are great cultural and economic considerations that must be considered, as population is only as stable as the bodies that represent it.  While the majority of the earth's patrons may not be starving, I can assure you --with great confidence-- that continuing to increase the population will in no way alleviate the problem(s).  Is the earth so short of space we couldn't possibly fit another body on it? No.  We could cram billions more onto the surface of the earth easily -- and even more if we wanted to start burrowing.   Is there evidence to suggest there is more life on this planet than can be supported without extreme social and economic changes throughout the world? Undeniably yes.

Don't mistake me for benevolent, though -- I'm not personally concerned -- I'm admittedly a misanthrope.  I'd pretty much keep calling it over-populated until I could count the population on my fingers.  Fortunately, evidence supports my claim at the time.

On the upside, I'm sure we'll destroy ourselves well before we find out just how many we can cram in this phone booth.

You make many wonderful points, Allen. Such necessary social and economic changes are absolutely possible. There isn't really any (good) excuse as to why the world can't be fed right now. The earth is fertile and can easily support its measly 6 billion (seems we've been stuck at 6 billion since I was in grade-school and perhaps beyond) people living on it. We have the technology. We have the ability. If our government (and all others) would get out of debt and start spending wisely there is no reason why we can't make the world a better place.

Even though there are starving countries I still don't consider the world overpopulated. It's just uncared for. We, as a country and as the world's population, have the ability to make it happen. I know this sounds like naive ideals to the jaded, but really it is absolutely possible. But just as you said, Allen, extreme social and economic (and probably other) changes would be required to pull this off. That doesn't make it impossible. Just more difficult.

Deozaan: brotherS split topics, since you're talk was a bit out of topic. You already got a few replies to that post. Check here:  https://www.donation...index.php?topic=3414

Edit by brotherS: yes, sorry Deozaan! I thought you subscribed to the thread and noticed the split  :-[

Thanks for clearing that up. This is also off-topic from the main thread, but I've never subscribed to a thread before. Are you saying it would notify me of a split? By subscribing me to the split thread, I suppose?

Er ... if the entire planet was populated to the density of New York where would you grow food?
-Carol Haynes (April 27, 2006, 01:17 PM)

If the entire planet was in an area the size of little 'ol Utah, there would be plenty of room to grow food.

I don't think everyone should up and move to a Utah sized area. Obviously that isn't going to happen. Nor do I think that the world will suddenly (to use a cliché) multiply like rabbits and fill up to the point of every habitable area being as dense as Ney York City. The point was that we could all live in such a small area and still be more comfortable than the millions of people currently residing in New York City, which means there is plenty of room for people to spread out in this very underpopulated (or, if you prefer, not-even-close-to-being-overpopulated) world.

You seem to be partially behaving akin to what you described you don't like. You've got your ideals and you think everyone else should have them.
Well that ranks right up there with the most specious argument I have ever heard. The gist of my argument is I don't give a damn about their ideals. That their sole purpose in life...since they have no meaningful kind of life....is to force themselves on everyone else. If they had a really fulfilling and interesting life they would be too busy to notice the sins of others.
People who are overly concerned about their "special place" in society and how it should behave to their standards, are basically worms who in reality are bland, useless, beige, hollow insignifigant characters who will leave no lasting impression on anyone.
This is a societal phase and the next evolution of "political correctness". Ya know the general oppression of the masses and pressure to conform to an ideological norm. The attempt to eliminate personal freedom and supress individualism.

It must make these people really proud. :-\

Throwing around insults and degradations instead of having a thought out, practical discussion perfectly resembles those bigoted fundamentalists you describe. If you don't give any thought to other people's ideals, why should they care about yours? And if you really think that smoking or drinking or eating meat is what defines your individualism, then I feel sorry for you too. I can do all those things just as much as the next person, but that doesn't make me an individual. It makes me a statistic. My individualism is more than what I consume or what actions I perform.

I have no grudge against you, Cpilot. Like you, bigoted, close-minded fundamentalists really bother me. They think they are right no matter what and won't listen to and don't care about what anyone else has to say unless they are agreeing with them. But for someone to profess the desire to let people do what they want and then slander those who want something other than what you want, I ask again, how does that make you any better than them?

Were I an arguing man, I'd say sucking a cigarette does more to serve an overpopulated planet than potentially contributing further to the gene pool

This planet isn't overpopulated. You could fit the entire world's population in the state of Utah and still not have the population density of New York City. While Utah may not be the most desirable place to live, the point is that there is plenty of room on this planet for more people.

While you health nuts are posting your this or that will kill you warnings, I've got this one to fire back :)

Coffee lovers can drink up without fear of increasing their risk of heart disease, according to a major new study that found people could consume as many as six cups a day without upping their risk.
...
So the best answer is, if you enjoy coffee and you drink four to six cups a day, it's not going to cause you heart disease."

. . . this would be great news to me, drinking 2 pots a day, if I didn't love cigarettes so much :)

http://www.cbsnews.c...ws/main1548221.shtml

What if I want 10 cups of coffee every day? I'm all out of luck.

Cyanide is a deadly poison that blocks oxygen from getting into your blood, yet millions of people use cigarettes which contain traces of cyanide, among  other poisons. The point is not whether people should or should not smoke, drink coffee or alcohol, eat meat, or whatever. The point is that anything is safe if used in moderation (Twinkies), but that doesn't make it good for you (again, Twinkies).

Record that in a rant and upload it for the podcast, Cpilot!  ;D

It's a shame others can't do the same.
:-\ :-\ :-\

You seem to be partially behaving akin to what you described you don't like. You've got your ideals and you think everyone else should have them. You used many aggressive and hostile words about people who have different opinions than you. How does that make you any better than them? You come off as just as fundamentalist as them, but with the opposite viewpoint. I'm not saying I disagree with your viewpoint, but the very action of saying "let people do what they want" and showing hostility against those who want something different than what you want is somewhat hypocritical.

Podcast Radio Show / Re: Podcast Audio Radio Show - Upcoming Show Planning
« Last post by Deozaan on April 26, 2006, 12:43 AM »
well, of course I meant post production, even for my song.  Cmon, I'm a computer geek!
Seriously, I was asking about the copyright issue, but I guess I'll forget about it for now.  I helped a friend of mine do a radio show once, and I think I remember there being something like if you played a clip for 15 seconds or less, it was free, but anything more would require loyalties.  Oh well...

If you wrote the song you can use it however you want. You own the copyright, after all.

I forgot to mention Syndicate. That was an awesome game my brother and I spent hours playing.

We'd take over the first town and set the tax rates at the right place and leave it on so when we got home from school we'd have plenty of money to do the research and give our operatives the best gear right from the get go. Awesome stuff. I loved converting enemy operatives to my side rather than killing them. Easy recruits.

General Software Discussion / Re: Duplicate RSS Feed Entries in FeedDemon 2
« Last post by Deozaan on April 21, 2006, 11:14 PM »
I use Rojo.com for my RSS feeds and I will often get duplicate entries. Sometimes where there was a spelling correction/change in the title.

But sometimes I'd get several of the same entries from one source, usually Joystiq, like they don't post enough already. It's terrible to have 100 new articles but each one from Joystiq has seven duplicates.

I don't have a solution. I'm just letting you know that it isn't limited to FeedDemon.

When I was in College, my design and layout skills were always flagged up as S.H.I.T., not CRAP. Not that S.H.I.T. was an anagram of anything, I was just no good.

Dude, where are the old school pc guys?  Anyone remember these classics?  I had an Apple IIe, and later, a IBM 486.

Prince of Persia
Another World (or Out of this World)
Castle Wolfenstein
Bruce Lee
Aztec
Bard's Tale
Spear of Destiny
Star Control (oh yeah!)

I mentioned Wolfenstein 3D and Star Control earlier. I played Prince of Persia and Flashback but they weren't among my favorites. Full Throttle was pretty funny, though, but nothing beat the Space Quest series' humor. Good times. Good times.
