« Last post by Perry Mowbray on March 12, 2009, 06:23 AM »
FARR TimeZone

This plugin will display the current time of the major cities from different time zones and up to 50 of your personal favourites.

Thank you to everyone who didn't make fun of the name! (I was a little concerned, wasn't sure if it shortened very well at all  :-[)

Update
2010 12 08 - Version 1.4.2 - Fixes the path bug that became apparent in Win7
2010 07 29 - Version 1.4.1 - Fixes bugs I introduced in version 1.4.0  :-[
2010 04 09 - Version 1.4.0 - Option to check Favourites, interface fixes, future proofing for TimeAndDate.com changes  ;)
2010 04 06 - Version 1.3.3 - Small fix because of TimeAndDate.com's change in their site.
2010 02 08 - Version 1.3.2 - Now supports all TimeAndDate.com languages and up to 50 Favourites!!
2010 01 28 - Version 1.2.2 - Finally realised that TimeAndDate.com dished up time formats based on user's location: Downloader updated.
2009 09 21 - Version 1.2.1 - Fixed the bug that kept the FARR window open for other searches.
2009 09 17 - Version 1.2.0 - Updated to use latest version of FScript.dll (See Here)
2009 09 08 - Version 1.1.0 - Added Custom URL's for "Hidden Locations"
2009 08 06 - Version 1.0.1 - Fixed Chris's AM/PM bug (finally)
2009 05 08 - Version 1.0.0 - Added logging for download problems, but apart from that :beerchug:
2009 04 29 - Version 0.9.6 - Got rid of some silly rubbish I forgot to put out last time  :-[
2009 04 24 - Version 0.9.5 - Added Load Each Launch, fixed width of settings window
2009 04 21 - Version 0.9.4 - Fixed bug with Favourites not setting correctly
2009.03.19 - Version 0.9.3 - Added locale strings, extended Favourites: See Post for details

Key Features
  • Display current world times as you type.
  • Display up to 50 favourites
  • Summer / Daylight Saving Time aware
  • Automatic Favourite checking
  • Dynamic linking to TimeAndDate.com's webpage
  • TimeAndDate carry many more Time and Date features on their website, and is well worth a visit.

Installation
Download the zip file and extract it into FARR's Plugin directory.

Updating
TimeZone uses dcUpdater, which is pretty straight forward; or unzip the update file over the top of your current installation (the update should keep your current settings)

Version 1.4.2: * timezone.zip (731.69 kB - downloaded 1171 times.)

Also available at My Site

Notes
A full readme is included, but it's pretty simple: just type tz to get going...

I had real issues grabbing the data from TimeAndDate.com using xmlhttpRequest: I couldn't get the javascript to cope with the unicode characters. I now use a separate programme to download and parse the data: I think it ended up better anyway, as the data file is stored on disk so startup is quicker.

I've not been able to get this to work with the newer versions of FScript.dll, so stay with the provided version (1.8)  :-\

All comments appreciated, I'm still feeling my way around FARR a little and not sure I'm doing things correctly?

Hope you enjoy it!

Yes! It's awesome!

What do you think about wrapping them? As the number, and the number of the links below the avatar, increase, the body of the forum is shifted to the right and extra white space is added in the first column. Is that's whats happening? The width of the first column shouldn't be much wider than the avatar should it?

I guess global time keeping is going to create issues: I was never quite sure what the dates actually meant: 26th my time or your time or your time converted into my time or...

Don't know what you mean? That plug looks normal to me? When they sent it to me we didn't know what country it was going to eventually reside in  ;)

And thank you for the extra prize, can't wait to play around with it.

I've actually had quite a lot of fun tracking it across the globe as it made its way from Australia to the UK! Last message:
Your item was delivered - UNITED KINGDOM at 10:49 on 26 Jan 2009.

What I want to know justice: was it really 10:49?

The Backup4All people have just emailed me that they've [just] emailed out their prizes.

If you were a recipient of one of the Backup4All prizes and you have not received your license please email or PM me ASAP and we'll sort it out.

Three months ago I decided to record what we harvest from our home garden. Always wanted to know what the financial benefits of the home garden were.

I was surprised to see that in one quarter that we'd harvested $219 worth of fruit and vegetables (using averaged prices)!

Admittedly, a good proportion of that was Raspberries (which are expensive here), which we probably would not have bought anyway, but when you're being frugal treats like this completely transform the humdrum that you normally would have been confined to  :D
959
I think it's even worse than your examples illustrate.  More and more i see evidence of companies and services charging fees that they KNOW are erroneous -- and it's just a matter of letting those who catch the error complain, at which point they remove the charge without issue.  Then the rest of the people who never notice.. they pay the price.

We recently read Tim Harford's The Underground Economist [Amazon Link] and found it to be a very revealing book! Helps us decide if we were being ripped off and to make better purchasing decisions. I highly recommend it.

It may seem obvious, but: Don't use Credit.

We also use VoIP for all our Phone calls, which reduced our phone bill from hundreds to less than a hundred.

DcUpdater / Re: DcUpdater Feature Requests
« Last post by Perry Mowbray on January 19, 2009, 10:31 PM »
One of the things we discussed via email was the ability to have and to distribute "Groups". NANY programmes was the thought at the time. Similar to your plugin tree thought, but as a group. This would allow an author to distribute dcupdater files for all his programmes and have them displayed in the interface grouped.

As a user I might like to display my dcupdater files in my own groups as well: user grouping.

Perry has indeed deserved the main price for his great work!
didn't get any prize
No he get at least one my personal prices
-computerfritze (January 19, 2009, 09:20 AM)

Yes very true! I should have replied to mouser's post sooner, but I thought his main intent was the (not so) veiled threat of NANY 2010. Everyone has been a little too concerned about my rewards from NANY 2009: My main focus has been the coders not the paper pushers, so I've probably neglected that aspect a little, which has produced a lack of transparency.  Not good: but I'll fix it up here...

It was possible that not all personal prizes were announced on the Rewards thread (such as computerfritze's to me), so other coders may have received personal prizes apart from those posted here. I've also received DonationCredits from other members (which is very nice too -- but you shouldn't do it!) and there was a matter of a leftover Backup4All license that I thought I could use (which I really should have added to the list :-[ ). So I've done very well, to be honest, more well than I really wanted.

Concerning the Backup4All license: If any of the successful NANY 2009 Coders would like to have it you are more than welcome to it! What we did was to ask each of the successful NANY Entrants to "express an interest" in one/some/all of the available prizes (and most of them did). This meant that only those who really wanted each prize would have a possability of receiving them. All the thanks, good wishes, DonationCredits and personal prizes has made the last Backup4All license superfluous in many ways: so if you'd like to change your mind about the Backup4All license please email or PM me.

Sorry for any confusion  :-[

Mini-Reviews by Members / Re: Synology DS207+ NAS

Update:
Synology have recently released a new model: the DS209+ that by all reports offers the same features at greater speeds!

Synology have just given us a new DS209+ to give away to one of our wonderful NANY 2009 coders!

I can't think about NANY Rewards without thinking about the explosion of interest and activity that this year's NANY has become: what a wonderful reward for DonationCoder and its members!!  :-*

NANY Rewards
We had 31 successful entrants this year that produced 35 new, exciting and varied applications: and they all will receive a wonderful NANY 2009 mug (or similar) with their choice of NANY Graphic:

Nany2009_Cody Pirate - Split.png
Nany2009_Cody Pirate - Centred.png
Nany2009_Cody Coding - 2009.png

NANY Extra Prizes
During the Challenge, NANY 2009 also received some extra prizes to give away. Some were posted on the forum, but another one almost materialized out of nowhere! I originally wrote a Review of the Synology DS207+ and had discussions with Synology about providing a unit for one of DonationCoder's Give-Aways. The Give-Away never eventuated, but something better has: Synology have very kindly offered a brand spanking new DS209+ to one of the successful entrants.

Selecting which of the 31 coders to give what extra prizes to was, to be honest, a horrid job. Mouser and I both agreed that it was not possible to rank the entries in any quantifiable order, so in the end it came down to selecting them on a random basis (with just a little tweaking to ensure a good spread of prizes).

So here are the extra winners:
Backup4All
  • CWuestefeld
  • deviantopian
  • theo geer
  • NinJA999
  • NahtanoJ88
  • Blaster

Synology DS209+
  • justice

USB2 Sata Enclosure
  • skwire

Sata Racks (2)
  • Crush

TV Tuner
  • kwack1

Congratulations all winners and extra winners!!

I finally had time and opportunity to give this programme a work out last night

I agree with lanux!! Just a couple of thoughts:
  • I'd appreciate a keyboard shortcut for the Translate button, or because the Enter key is not passed through to the text box, maybe the Enter Key could perform the Translate?. I found it awkward typing short chat messages and having to dive off for the mouse.
  • Also appreciate a button and keyboard shortcut to select all translated text and copy to clipboard. Or could after the Translated Text is entered, it also puts it on the Clipboard?
  • I'd like a keyboard shortcut to swap the Tabs as well.

The German person I was chatting with said that the German to English translations were much better than the English to German (but I presume that's Google).

Thanks!! Great little Application!

Unless I miss something, dual monitor are not really supported.
At least for me (win XP Pro x64), the second monitor is usabled with the mouse .. and thus it is possible to do bad things with the mouse.
Except this, this is really a useful tool.

Now you mention it I found that too, but thought it was a good thing: I thought that the second monitor could just be turned off, and if I'd moved any work I was doing to the second monitor, it'd be there safe and sound when I turned the monitor back on again (If I needed to do something quickly) !
