General Software Discussion / Re: Windows vs. Mac: I'm starting to change.

Absolutely no ill towards you Zaine but that comparison linked is laughably naive and illogical. It baffles my sometimes how far removed some people are from reality.

I feel much the same way about the the thinksimple link/story - it is insulting to the intelligence, at least where it touches on the Apple vs Windows debate (the six steps to eliminating limiting beliefs, which is the main point of the post are probably fine - didn't read 'em with any great atention to detail). The guy's gotten 5 years out of his Dell for Chrissakes! My mum and dad' bought a refurbished iMac G5 running Tiger about 2 ½ years ago (which makes it, plus or minus, about four or five years old). It was shit hot when they got it. However, after about 8 months I quadrupled the RAM (to 2GB) because my mum was starting to complain about a general "slow down" and it was snappier for a while. Today it is no speed demon, but if runs OK. However, they had serious issues with their Epson all-in-one not functioning properly (yes, I know, third party hardware and drivers) and switched that out for a small HP laserjet, which I've already had to troubleshoot twice for connectivity issues. Thus, overall, the performance of the machine has degraded. Every couple of months I mess about with it and claw back some speed and harddrive space for them.

My point? Why is this guy blaming the platform for problems that sound more related to running (I assume) newer software under an older OS on old hardware (specific blame probably lies with bus speed and CPU architecture)? If the Dell (which presumably was designed and certified to run XP) won't run nice and fast with a base install of XP, I'll eat my hat! My guess is that he re-installs Windows, bitches and whines about the length of the re-installation process, reboots for updates, and then doesn't pause to draw a breath before cramming additional security, productivity and other software that he uses on to it, thereby closely replicating whatever was causing the original problem! Think simple my ass, more like simplistic thinking!

Sorry, I just get pissed off by these illogical leaps that people make... this one reminds me of the correlation that a headline writer drew between playing Starcraft and a random act of violence: Starcraft player charged after knife attacky from a while back. "Mentally ill man charged after knife attack" doesn't have quite the same cachet. All I'm sayiing is that the blog writer has drunk the Kool-Aid, even if he's still running his Dell and pining for a Mac that he doesn't seem to be able to convince himself that he deserves because of conflict between his frugality and the bitter taste left by the Apple tax.

Come back tomorrow, I'll tell you what I really think  :o

Rant over  :-[

PS Just upgraded to PDF Pro 6. Looks good. Here's how to convert to a searchable PDF (from an image derived PDF):

Hi SKA,

In PDF 4 and 5 Pro, in order to edit a PDF made from jpg or any other image file, you first need to go to the toolbar and click on "Convert PDF". You'll get a drop down list that includes "Searchable PDF" (second to last choice). Select this and PDF Pro's built in OCR goes to work. When it's done (and it can take a long time if you're converting a really big PDF) you'll be prompted to save the output under a new file name. I'd do this as there are some PDFs that this doesn't work on - mostly, I've found, if the pictures have been rotated during PDF creation. You can get everything back to normal... eventually! If you experiment. This is one of the reasons I'm interested in version 6 because you can apparently do this to pages or even to blocks of text. In PDF 5 Pro and earlier, you have to perform the conversion on the entire document - selecting a single page out of 100 would allow me to find the right orientation for the image much more quickly.

Hope this helps,

Mike

I just use one of the Opera torrent widgets. I'm not on my own computer at the moment, so can't post a link to the one I use, but later today will check and post it here. At any rate, it's been great! I tried using whatever Vuze (formerly Azeurus), but didn't like it.

This is the Opera widget I've been using: Torrent Power Search.

Just as we in Denmark also learns German, so does the Germans also learn English, if you know what I mean.
Sure, but why is it important then if it is English, German or whatever?

Touché! Oh, sorry, that's French. Now I'm really confused  ;D

You're right, Curt. I've been offered a better deal than that. It's good through the end of November, so no hurry... Interesting that the "official" upgrade price is the same as a new license. Not good...
958
Title says it all... Nuance has new versions of PDF Converter, OmniPage and PaperPort out and is offering some big discounts on upgrades/new purchases. I'm not interested in upgrading PaperPort 11 or OmniPage 16, but there is functionality in PDF Converter Professional 6 that I crave. However, Nuance has a rocky release history and PDF Converter Professional 5 is rock solid on my Windows 7 system. Just wondering if anyone has tried any of the new releases out yet...

@Tom - I think they're just trying to get you to sign up for an account. Above that request is a note saying "Thank you for submitting feedback to Chaim", or words to that effect. It's all good!

Heh, heh - just tried Aero Shake and it's not bad. A bit gimmicky and I'm not sure if I'll wind up using it at this point or not, but I can see that it might useful on a single monitor set up.

Nicely said, Curt   I've yet to see a Windows 7 ad (I don't watch that much television), but I hope you're right. In fairness, with the success of the Apple ad campaign over the past two or three years, I don't think MS had much choice but to go the way that they did. I've said it elsewhere, but Apple's ads have been so effective that I don't think that MS advertising Vista on features would have worked - it's now ingrained in peoples' minds, right or wrong, that Vista was a pig.

Well... It's not *much* of an advance beyond double-clicking the menubar titlebar, but if I want to move a window to my secondary monitor, I simply drag the window over and then make sure that it touches the top of the viewable area of the monitor et voila! It's maximized. It really SOUNDS quite silly but I actually find it to be surprisingly handy

EDIT: corrected wording... Doh! I was THINKING "titlebar" while I was typing the original post, too  >:(

I would rather say, the "new way of doing things" does not fit anyone's actual work habits, eh?

Maybe it is me who is in the minority, but I have fully embraced the new taskbar and start menu in Windows 7. I love the way they work. My taskbar is uncluttered, my start menu works how I want it to....life is good in my corner of the computing universe.
Mine too, I'm lovin' the new Win7 UI

Me three! It's evolutionary, rather than revolutionary, in comparison to Vista, but it's been "tweaked" and I like it a lot. The new taskbar and start menu rock

but the reality is that the biggest percentage of Windows users, the great unwashed masses if you will, don't care how much Windows will be selling for on the shelves. They typically buy a machine from Dell, HP, or someone else and use whatever OS is on it till it is time to upgrade the machine. Then they go out and buy a new computer repeating the cycle. They never upgrade the OS on its own, but only when they buy a new computer.

Can't disagree with that!

I agree with you, too, about resource usage. Also, to add, when I updated to Windows 7 from Vista I first removed temp files and system restore points to free up disk space on the target drive (C). When I started the inplace upgrade to Windows 7, I had 16.5 GB free space on that drive with Vista Ultimate 64 installed. After the upgrade to 7 Ultimate 64 was complete that same drive had 21 GB free. After I deleted the inplace upgrade folders, I wound up with 22.6 GB of free space. Thus, my experience is that 7 has a smaller disk footprint as well.

Real world usage shows that my CPU cores are less taxed than they were under Vista and that ACPI and CPU temperatures are quite a bit cooler under Windows 7. The GPU operating temperature remains unchanged. I haven't tested battery life yet, but will over the coming week.

Yes - must agree with wraith and innuendo here. I can agree that perhaps a typical user spends most of his or her time on a computer in a web browser, but the OS becomes extremely important the minute they want to change the background (wallpaper) on their desktop or type out and print off a letter or a recipe. Can they find the system settings easily? Will the OS run the software they want to run? Does the OS support their printer?, etc.

One of the nice features of AWM is it's ability under Vista and Windows 7 to maximize the desktop background on a secondary monitor  :) I'm sure that if I researched this I'd find a hack I could do to do this myself, but it's nice to have AWM do it for me. It works even if AWM is not running on the machine  :-*

PS it also allows you to set unique wallpaper for each monitor attached to your system

Heh, heh - they called while I was out so I am now awaiting a second call. I might just buy another license through your other vendor and give my wife the Plimus generated code when it arrives - she currently relies on Outlook's built-in Junk Mail filters.

EDIT: except that Plimus is the only vendor for the non-Bat! versions. C'est la vie...

BTW this all worked out and my wife and I are each using AntiSpamSniper for Outlook. I'm not  :o using it under Windows 7 64 bit with Outlook 2007 and my wife is using it on XP Pro 32 bit with Outlook 2007. It's been working great on both systems.

EDIT: doh!

Muriel Barbery's The Elegance of the Hedgehog (translated from the French). It's early days yet and I haven't yet decided if I like it...

I haven't read an academic book in about six months  :o I quit my PhD program in January and haven't had much desire since  :( I have a huge backlog of books that I purchased prior to that and have not yet read. Maybe after I get through this novel and revisit some of them...

I quite like the new taskbar in Windows 7. It takes a bit of getting used to but it works. So much so that I have removed (though have not yet uninstalled) TrueLaunchBar64 from the taskbar and find that I really do not miss it.

Hovering the cursor over an icon pops up a small window showing you what apps are running associated with the icon (ie if you have two Firefox browsers and a download window open you will see these represented in the popup):

New Windows TB.png

PS Screenshot from SnagIt 9 - I couldn't figure out how to use MS' Snipping Tool (which is otherwise quite good) to invoke without using the mouse and thus having the pop-up disappear

EDIT: add the postscript...

I think Windows 7 will be judged a success or a failure in both the market and the press. I loved Vista (and agree with Josh - Windows 7 is probably NOT worth a paid upgrade, though I suspect that a lot of people will do just that to get away from Vista) and its sales seem to have been more than adequate, but it has remained a PR nightmare for MS since it was released. If reports start filtering out post-Oct 22 about real users having trouble free upgrades to Windows 7 on older hardware that was designed for XP or even 2000, I think Windows 7 will have a shot at doing well in the press and blogosphere and this will be reflected in the marketplace.

However, if MS REALLY wants a hit on its hands, they should do something about their pricing scheme. From what I've seen, Windows 7 will be very expensive.  If MS took a page from Apple's playbook and released a single DVD with all flavours of Windows 7 on it and one license key for a flat sum of $100-200, it would sell like hot cakes. Instead this is the price point for lower-end version UPGRADE LICENSES, which will still require clean installs. Not smart marketing in my opinion.
