Living Room / Re: Suck An Egg RIAA
« Last post by Lashiec on March 11, 2008, 07:59 PM »
Now, let's wait for the sales figures. The first experiment that Trent Reznor did (with another artist) was a total failure.

So, is the album any good? I'm not really into NIN, mostly because I listened to few songs by them him

I should say that, despite the media coverage of this movement, Reznor is not the first in offering his music in such a free way (compared with the rest). Metallica, yeah, yeah, you're reading right, the same Metallica that confronted Napster, had been offering a ton of their live shows in MP3 and FLAC formats for between 10 and 13 dollars. AND they also have a free for everyone handful of old shows, spawning their complete career, to download, although only in MP3 format (CBR at 192 kbps).

WOW! Looks really nice, I'm going to download it. Maybe I won't play it online, but I'm sure it'll provide some mindless fun by itself. Now, can people stop making OSS FPS? I have various sitting in the HDD, and there are tons more out there! :)

Actually, CCleaner has been out of beta for some months now ;D, and now I think it's safe to use.

Uh, RegSeeker, are you using its registry cleaner or only the temp files removal function?
956
Yes, thanks for reminding me :-[. So, thanks to jazper for warning mouser :)

(URL fixed :P)

Is it only ntos.exe? I checked and I have an ntoskrnl.exe in the system32 folder. Is that safe?

Check up the link to the Symantec information page about the virus that mouser included in the first post for more details, but that file comes with Windows by default.

I had the privilege to host DC temporary site on my server during the downtime (just for the displaying maintenance notice), and.... believe it or not, the gzip'd text html page alone (not including the cody pic displayed) accounted for 4.01GB of traffic usage in mere 3 days.  :o

Crazy!

Well, I had the rare privilege? of doing the last post before the the site was closed down to prevent further problems, so imagine my surprise when the site stopped responding and I asked Wordzilla what was happening. At first, I couldn't believe it was h4xor, but further explanations confirmed the unthinkable :(

Fortunately, the management was quick, and the impact seems to be minimal. It was a blessing the site was delivering old malware, which was easy to identify (tip to f0dder), and could not wreak much havoc, as long as the usual defenses were in place. BIG thanks to Gothi[c] for its hard work with the server, and to mouser and Wordzilla for everything. Also, thanks to the members in the IRC channel, which was my refuge during the storm, and a very comfortable one :D

And thanks to the member that warned mouser about the infection (can you believe I forgot his name? :o)

Best Archive Tool / Re: Has anyone tried jZip?
« Last post by Lashiec on March 07, 2008, 10:53 AM »
Yeah, I tried it when I was setting up the computer, and headed to the 7-Zip page to grab its installer. I saw it advertised, and thought: "why not?". I played with it like 15 minutes before it was uninstalled, it's slick and everything, but it lacks most of the compression options 7-Zip has.

WinRAR FTW anyway :D

EDIT: D'oh! The grammar :-[

Well, if you have the original copy, I don't see a problem. Or you can grab the game via BitTorrent, backup copies of works that you own are legal, after all :)

I never used Stage6, so what benefits did they offer over getting content using BitTorrent clients? (Apart from having shows that are impossible to get in BitTorrent due to the lack of seeders)

Living Room / Re: Microsoft Bid for Yahoo - Interesting Development...
« Last post by Lashiec on February 29, 2008, 09:51 AM »
I seriously doubt a combination of Microsoft and Yahoo! could challenge Google's domination in that area, at least in the short-term. If people were concerned about Google misbehaviour there, the solution is simple: move to other ad carrier, but everyone seems to be happy right now. Besides, joining two behemoths to battle another one in just one field doesn't solve the problem of the monopoly a combination of Microsoft + Yahoo! could create in a lot of areas (IM and mail, just to mention the two biggest ones).

What it troubles me is that, despite initial concerns, now most people are simply standing back, and ignoring the whole issue, because they already conceded that, one way or another, Microsoft will achieve what it wants, even if they resort themselves to dirty play. It's amazing the kind of loopholes the system has for corporations to achieve everything they want, just to please those faceless masses that are the shareholders (or so they claim). I wonder how they would be pleased when just a few companies dominate everything, something that seems to be accelerating as lately, market competition be damned, goodbye one of the principles of the capitalist system.

Oh well, at least we have the EU to stop their dreams ;D

Find And Run Robot / Re: [bug report] Some bugs I should have reported earlier
« Last post by Lashiec on February 29, 2008, 09:25 AM »
Sorry for the double post, but I have to ask it: Is normal that opting for not showing the "Result label extension" makes the "Type" label show the extension instead of the real filetype as reported by Windows, just like it does if you have the aforementioned option set to "Yes"?

Would it be possible to have only the main FARR window skinned? I love the skin, but seeing the rest of the FARR windows skinned (especially when you call Windows "Open" dialog) turns me off.

Living Room / Re: look at the size of my mouse mat !!!
« Last post by Lashiec on February 27, 2008, 06:34 PM »
this one (Steelseries QCK - you get it rolled up) is 31 x 27cm
I even find that a little big
think it cost about 10euro but you can get it cheaper online - or get a smaller one - but with delivery then...

I've read a few reviews and it seems like a nice little mat, it's a bit big for me, but fortunately there's a smaller model at 7 €. I think I'll order one or two soon, my current mat does not deserve the name. Thanks for the information!

Living Room / Re: New RAM tech quadruples capacity!
« Last post by Lashiec on February 26, 2008, 07:46 PM »
Oh, what Google can't do :)

Yep, actually one of the reasons to buy 4 GB (well, it's on the upgrade list almost since I bought the computer) is Vista, if SP1 proves to be as good as it should be, I'll get another pair of sticks and move to the x64 version. Finding XP 64 here is almost impossible, and it's not an OS I would consider anyway. It won't happen anytime soon, I'll let other users to be guinea pigs experience Vista while I wait for 2 GB modules to come down in price (I hope the downward trend in memory prices continues for some months...).

Ah, I read a benchmark time ago, and the differences in performance between DDR2-667 and DDR2-800 were something like 1%. I can't remember where it was, though.

Anyway, I rarely go over 600-700 MB at the end of the day, my peak is around 1.5 GB when playing demanding games for some time. Still, it would be nice to have 4 GB, don't know why, bragging rights maybe :D
