Living Room / Re: Touchy touch screen rubs me the wrong way

I can recommend that route

Thanks.  I'll keep it in mind.  I think the next phone I get will either be an Obama Phone or something with some capabilities.  I need to have some screen and some web bandwidth and a decent camera/video hw.

I am going to try to find out more about this "free internet for everybody" stuff.  Although I said it jokingly to other street people that they should require an Associate's Degree before allowing someone to be homeless, it may come to fruition.  MDC is pushing for free two year college for everyone.  So if they do enforce my edict requiring an ASC. to live on the street I have the term already coined.  "Street Associates."   I cam see the joy spreading all over Miami.  Cowabunga!  I got my Street Associates today!  Now I can swill beer with a white shirt and tie!!!  :)

Edit:  My thinking is they may actually give people broadband and smart phones/tablets.  Since nobody below management level is working they need to give the stuff away(have government cover the cost) as an excuse to keep manufacturing stuff.   I hope it's at least 50 Mb/s on the down link.  :)

What weirds me out is how the most popular Javascript cookie consent plugins on GitHub all use the phrase "Got It!" instead of "OK!"

I agree. I think they should standardize on using m'kay? instead.

Heh heh heh.  Come to think of it, I need to find a nice Mr Hat Smiley .. m'kay?

Yeah.  It makes me feel like I am in 2nd grade and the teacher explains what a file is, and what a cookie is(no not the ones mom gives you to eat at recess.)  Then the teacher says "Got it?"  Well, no.  I don't get it.  There should be a "Yes, No, Cancel" on that dialog.

What a world!  They make the law after Netscape and descendants have been in use for over two decades.  But the armored truck has an "equipment malfunction," the doors swing open and dump bags of money right in front of Whitey Bulger!  As if he needed more cash!  Like they sang on Sesame Street.. "One of these things is not like the others."   Hmmmm.     :)

Not portable, but small, simple and still out there as freeware is AnalogX Simple Server

It does claim PHP support but I am not sure how recent it is.
I think the last update for most AnalogX utilities is Vista/W7 era.

Every web page I go to now, they want me to click a button after they tell me their site uses cookies!!  I have one question.  Can they not set a cookie to remember that I clicked the button last time? After all, I told them it was OK to put a cookie on my system.  So why don't they instead of being annoying?

Found Deals and Discounts / Re: AData s102 256GB USB 3.0 flash drive $94.99

Weird but they seem to have somehow got more in stock over night and put the price up, top that off with shipping and import fees and it's no longer a good buy for those of use across the pond :(

Price:   $116.99 + $35.67 Shipping & Import Fees Deposit to Ireland

For some reason they seem reluctant to discount the 256GB model.  Newegg had the 128 GB for about $44 shipped(to those in the contiguous 48 states of the U S of A.)  But I waited a bit more and got a 15% discount code on top of that.  Came to about $37 or so delivered.

Maybe because the 256GB has higher transfer speeds they think they can move them?  I don't know.  Good thing I had that camel cubed notification set up or I probably would have missed it.

Not as bad as I thought.  It turns out the SandDisk does have an FM tuner.  Just no instructions how to get to radio mode.  Through trial and error I got to the settings that enable/disable all the modes.  FM was there.  So I just kept trialing and erroring until I hit on it.  Only took about three hours of frustration.

The $23 cheapie MP3/FM with the touch screen had a much better sound.  It was larger and heavier too.  This one requires Full Bass setting to be enabled to counter the too much treble sound.  But it is tolerable and light weight.  No touch screen so scrolling is deterministic.  Unfortunately there is no directory list mode to access folders explicitly.  I'll have to do some mp3 renaming once I find out what scheme it likes to use.  Otherwise accessing all my albums will not be feasible.

But I'll worry about organizing stuff after it lasts a week.  It has a flimsy feel to it.  I suspect the USB port has a life expectancy of weeks rather than months.  It is very tight and unplugging is bound to dislodge the guts eventually.

Supposedly there is only one left.

So I just ordered that one... and there's still one left folks!  ;D   That calls for a round of...

I'd send you one, (I've got two I don't use here, both have FM), but it'd be sans battery - AusPost do not accept Li-Ion batteries in parcels.

You still have a phone kicking around?  Heh heh
I just bought a $50 SanDisk MP3 Player that was supposed to also have an FM tuner.  I picked it up today.  Well it seems to have 8GB storage and play MP3 but there's nothing about any FM radio.  This brings me up to about 7 attempts to get an FM radio under $50 or so that plays stereo FM.  I got a $23 touch screen FM/MP3 just before this one.  FM and files sounded pretty good.  Touch screen was a bit finicky but it worked.  I played a large file and it got "stuck."  I could not get it to even turn off holding down the power button.  I could have returned it to Walmart I suppose but it was more satisfying to stomp on it until the screen fractured and toss it in the trash barrel.  What do I have to do to hear Jazz on the radio?  I mean this is freaky.

I put a watch on camel cubed(camelcamelcamel.com) awhile ago to notify me if the AData s102 USB 3.0 flash drive 256GB model broke a hundred bucks.  I got the email.  The price was $94.99 so I had to go for it.

http://www.amazon.co...6G-RGY/dp/B00R61UX7G

Supposedly there is only one left.  :)

This flash drive has mid range to good performance.  But I like it because that is coupled with rugged construction and reliability.  I have a 32GB a 64GB and 2 128GB of this model.  None have given me a problem.  The sequential read and write numbers come in as expected for large file transfers.

I think I paid close to $90 for the first 128GB s102.  The second I got for less than $40.  I have been waiting for the 256GB to break a hundred bucks.  Looks like the price is finally starting to crumble for that capacity.

Edit:

Apparently there is a performance bonus on the 256GB capacity drive.  I thought perhaps Amazon got it wrong because earlier I could not find any other location with their numbers.  But AData's data sheet bears it out:

http://www.adata.com...fd/specification/145

Up to 200 MB/s sequential read and up to 120 MB/s sequential write for large files.  Now I am happier I pushed the button.

Two left arm swipes down, then one right arm swipe to the left then three Seig Heils and your password is accepted.

Honestly, I've found the gesture based passwords to be so insanely easy to (shoulder surf at virtually any angle) hack that there is no way in hell I'd ever use one.

Watch the wrist, look at the picture ...(and at least 80% of the time)... Duh!

I was being facetious.  Now that you mention it though I do remember seeing one.  I must have dismissed the memory as too ridiculous to take seriously.  It is disconcerting that insane stuff I think up is actually in use.  It shows there are people crazier than I am out there doing who knows what?  Heh heh

See the section for Wise Care 365.  Pressing the Get It Now button downloads a .docx file with a link to the download:  for those without .docx reader :
"http://wisecleaner dot com/xen/WiseCare365_V3_videoconverterfactory.exe"
(change "dot com" to ".com" of course)

You have to download and install before March 31.  But here is the good part.  If you already have an older version of Wise Care 365 giveaway it will update and continue the registration until that copy would have expired.  Mine is registered until July this year after I just updated.

There are some other software titles on the same page but nothing of interest to me personally.  :)

Tongue depressors were the first psycho-active drug.

Can a singer with a depressed tongue perform well?

Not easy to keep a stiff upper lip with a depressed tongue.  If it is clinical depression I sure hope the treatment is on an out-patient basis.  I'd hate to have to leave my tongue in a semi-private room for weeks on end.  :)

Not sure why people are so hung up about wireless this or that. The "convenience" factor
...

It creeps me out when I see somebody sit back in a swivel chair 10 feet from their desk with a keyboard on their lap to do their computing.  How do they do it?  I took Typing 101 in high school.  If I didn't assume the correct position at the desk I am sure my old typing teacher would come out of retirement just to swat me with her handbag and yell at me!

Old fashioned?  I still haven't used a smart phone or Blackberry.  The only device I own with a touch screen is an MP3 player.  :)

I wonder how many news articles which "surprisingly" find out that anti-virus software does not work are required until people finally stop financially supporting the scareware developers.

This result helps make the point.  I use Nir Sofer's utilities all the time.  Just for grins I VirusTotaled the latest NirLauncher.  The results would scare the hell out of anyone who didn't know better:

What kind of battery is generally used in these wireless keyboards/mice?  I am just curious.  I use USB keyboards and mice just because they draw power directly from the port.  No heavy battery to add to the weight of my suitcase.  If it is a "coin" size battery then I guess the weight is negligible.  But I may have lucked into doing the right thing via being misinformed.  :)

I hate having to worry about batteries - Wired = powered = trouble free

At least on the Logitech USB wireless I found it uses 1 AA battery.  Not super heavy but still.. I'd rather have no battery.  ;)

Besides.  Wrapping up the USB cable and sticking the mouse in a slider baggy gives me something to do.  :)

Classic Shell (shell alternative for Windows 10, 8, 7) - Mini-Review
-donationcoder.com/forum

I tried Classic Shell awhile back.  It was flakier than Start Menu X or 10.  So far the work-around of adding these LED and AltDrag tray utilities via my delayed start utility seems to be working. Since I made the change it has worked every time(up to about 6 or 7 boots by now I think.)

Also I start Nexus Dock using the delayed utility.  I am starting to like Nexus.  Simple to configure.  Now that I have it so it closes after a short delay and does not jump in front of other windows, and does not make sound effects, it is unobtrusive.  It seems simpler to set up than RocketDock.

I never used a wireless mouse/keyboard.  Don't they use IR?  If it is infrared then wouldn't the source(the hacker) have to be line of sight into the computer room?

Funny I haven't heard this mentioned before.  Unless it is the cause of those "I didn't change anything.  All of a sudden I cannot index my files" or whatever?
