General Software Discussion / Re: How do you organize your email?
« Last post by Deozaan on September 21, 2006, 11:32 PM »
Someone mentioned that to me awhile back but my experience is that as soon as you add a '+' to your email and type it into a box in a webform it gets rejected as an invalid email address, so that wouldn't be very helpful.

Not every time. Sometimes, yes. But surprisingly less often than I thought.

I have multiple gmail accounts...each for a different purpose.

All mail from them is forwarded to my main gmail account, where it is labeled with what account it came from.

You know that you don't need to have separate gmail accounts for this? Just sign up for e-mail using (for example) [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] and then use the filters to set their labels. I heard about this long ago (probably on this site) but have just started putting it to use and it is very handy.

Developer's Corner / Microsoft's XNA Game Studio Express
« Last post by Deozaan on September 18, 2006, 02:57 PM »
So I downloaded XNA (2MB download, awesome!) then went to install it and it said I needed to download and install Visual C# Studio Express first. So I downloaded it and installed it. Then I installed XNA, which consisted in downloading another 800MB of files. So much for the 2MB download. . . While I was waiting for that to finish downloading and installing I was looking on Microsoft's page on what was required to run XNA. It said I needed to also have the Direct X 9 SDK from August 2005, which was very close to 1GB, if I recall correctly.

Hours later when I finally got everything installed and running, I opened up the tutorial included with XNA on making my first game. Followed the directions, it said to compile the program and run. Oops! Compile error. I corrected an inconsistency in variable/function naming. Compile and run. What? Another compile error? Go over the code and can't figure out what's wrong. Keep getting an error about the graphic file I'm using. Check to see what file types it supports. Gif is included. File should work. . . Wonder if perhaps the long name is causing problems. Shorten file name and compile. File not found. Oops, I forgot to update the file in the solution manager. Hmmm. . . The text box for changing the path is grayed out. Maybe it's because the compiler is still running. Close it. Nope, still greyed out. Close all open files. Still can't change it. Close VC#SE2005 and reopen. There we go, I can update it now.

Now how the heck do I open up my program I was working on? And where the heck did my Solution Manager and Toolbox go to? View -> Solution Manager. View -> Toolbox. Cool they hide on the side of the screen. I set them to autohide. Figure out how to open up my source code again. Nice, should work now. Compile and Run. Still an error. What is the problem? Go over it again and can't find anything wrong. Can't find my Toolbox or Solutions Manager anymore. Reopen them. Decide to cut and paste entire code from the example into the source code, changing only the example file name for the sprite to the actual filename on my system. That should do it! Compile and Run. WHAT? Still getting an error on that line of code that uses the sprite. Click on error message. It says "Click here for more details." I click. Read more details. Can't see how those details have anything to do with what I'm doing. Mess around with it for another 20 minutes, copying and pasting again from the tutorial, word for word, line for line, except that filename. Compile and Run. Same error. And where the heck did my Solutions Manager and Toolbox go?!! Open them again.

Frustrated, as it is the fifth time now that I've been following tutorials on programming in C or C++ or C# with Microsoft products over the past few years the tutorial source code does not compile on my system. Close XNA/VC#SE2005 in disgust and post about it here the next day.

Anyone see the McDonald's commercial that ripped those college kids' idea off?

Both videos are available there from Joystiq.

EDIT: Farther down in the comments people mention how commercials similar to this have been going on since before Gordon College did it.

Comments #18 and #19 claim to have seen it in the past or concurrently. #18 commenter says it was seen in 2000 or 2001, while #19 (among others) say that Nintendo has been advertising New Super Mario Bros. in the UK in a similar way: http://youtube.com/watch?v=BRKWmy2-KrU

To me that raises the following question:

Why are some of the S letters written like an F but not all of them? There are places that it has both right next to each other. Such as the word "less" written as "lefs." Makes no "fense" to me.

I don't understand why Adobe Acrobat thinks it needs to constantly run a service. I tend to avoid PDF files as often as possible just because Acrobat in itself is a big hassle.

Why don't programs just run services when I open them and then close those services when I close them?

I can kind of understand things like Printer services (though they cause a lot of bloat and take forever to load on startup) to recognize buttons being pressed on the printer, I guess. But why does VMWare load so much stuff if I only use it once a month? I don't think the VMnat, VMnetdhcp, vmount2, and the vmware-authd ALL need to be running when the program isn't even running.

I'm not even sure what half of these processes are that are running. Of my 50 processes running right now (and I've ended some of them already) I don't know what about 30 of them do and I don't what program they're for.

WHY??!

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: drag window to edge automatically resizes it
« Last post by Deozaan on September 12, 2006, 05:40 PM »
GridMove is only supposed to work with the left mouse button if you click on the part of the title bar that actually has the title of the application, correct? When I click more to the right where there are no words, the grids do not appear. I believe this is normal functionality.

When I click somewhere on the title bar that has no text, and I drag it as straight as possible to the left, to where there was originally the title bar text, the grids will appear. This is easiest seen if you disable "show window contents while dragging" in Windows so that you can see the original position of the title before you started dragging it.

Does that make more sense?

Post New Requests Here / Re: IDEA: drag window to edge automatically resizes it
« Last post by Deozaan on September 12, 2006, 03:59 PM »
I think I may have found a bug. Whenever I drag a window from the title bar (though not necessarily while clicking on the title itself) straight to the left, it goes maybe 100 pixels and then snaps into place and the trigger grids appear.

Dang! Now I'm not able to reproduce it 100% of the time, but before I started writing this it happened every time.

Okay, I think I might have figured it out. If I drag the title bar from some place other than the title and drag it straight left into the area the title originally was when I started dragging, it snaps it into place as if I had just clicked onto the title in the first place.

This is a very handy tool. I'm still working on customizing it for my workplace, but I'm finding it very useful. If only this thing had a GUI where you could just draw the bounding boxes for the triggers and grids. Or take a snapshot of where the window currently is and load those coordinates into the grid. And also, as I already said, I'd like to be able to name my grids.

If you look at the source code, D., you'll see a special hack labeled "Pwning 4 Deozaan, no grid 4 u lolololz"  ;D
  ;D ;D ;D

All the grids are now working. I did not put Allen's grid in the grid folder. I'm not sure what it was. I got Allen's to load correctly and it isn't locking up anymore. Maybe it was just a software conflict. I'm at work and have some company specific software running that does weird things to the computer sometimes.

But I have a feature request! I would like it if we could name the drag spots instead of just numbering them. This way I could have a grid named Firefox, or E-mail or something similar.

Am I blind or is there no link to JGPaiva's awesome AHK snacks from the Software page? I was looking all over for GridMove earlier today and I couldn't find it for a while. How come JGPaiva doesn't have his own dedicated page?

Okay, I read the help file. (duh!) so now I can get it to go to the drag zones, and I know it has dual monitor support. But it keeps locking up when I load Allen's grids.

Oh, there it went. It just takes forever to load, but Allen's grid doesn't seem to work.

GridMove keeps locking up (not responding) and I run it and I try to drag windows around but it doesn't show a grid and they don't go into place.

What's the deal? Has it been tested with Dual Monitors?

I decided to play them in order. Got bored with #1 and moved on to #2, easy.  Now I'm on #3 and doing some training. Somehow I managed to click away from the screen and when I came back to it my guy was still shooting. I've left it going while browsing other sites (thanks for tabbed browsing, Firefox!) and my high score is way up. I just wish I could shut off the music.

Still haven't played #4 yet, though.

EDIT: I got tired of the music, so I shut it off, but not before taking a screenshot of the year. (and about 3/4 of the way to the next!)

Hey all, I didn't see this on this site already, but I can't imagine that some of you wouldn't know already, GridMove was featured on LifeHacker.

I work on a 21" widescreen monitor, so I rarely maximize windows to cover my full desktop. In fact, I find that working with two windows side-by-side is a major productivity boon for me. As such, I'm loving GridMove, which makes it easy for me to snap windows into clean, pre-defined spaces so that I don't have to resize them and. . .

Cool, I want to get some. Not for anything illegal. Just to try it out. Could be useful if you lock your keys in your car or something. I could start my own locksmithing business with just a few bumpkeys. People pay me to spend three seconds unlocking their doors with a mallet and a bump key.

Coolness.
