General Software Discussion / Re: Opera 9.5 — New Skin
« Last post by tomos on July 08, 2008, 02:50 AM »
I'm only after installing 9.5 yesterday,
first thing I did was get rid of the skin - it might look good on vista but [I think] it looks terrible with XP or classic themes

I see they have a reduced size one on offer as well

I opted for the minimalist_native-2_2 skin - not very exciting but ... :)

Breeze,
the minimalist ones, look really good

General Software Discussion / Opera: copy text WITH formatting
« Last post by tomos on July 07, 2008, 05:37 PM »
I though I'd better start a new thread about this cause it's mentioned in various threads as an "it bugs me about opera" thing

Came across this just today in the Surfulater forums

Right click on selected text in Opera and you should find and new option "Copy text with formatting". Select this to copy to the clipboard.
If you installed 'autocopy.js' this step is not necessary as it is performed automatically but you should check that the menu option is present.
-
follow the link to figure out how. The thread is about how to use it with Surfulater - i.e. how to copy text with formatting so it can be pasted in Surfulater [I havent applied it yet but it seems to work over there :)]

It seems like this breakage coincided with the FF upgrade to 2.0.0.15. Is everyone who is experiencing the problem on this version?

"Find+Run Robot v2.14.01 by DonationCoder" oops, didnt read your post properly!
now on FF3 - was running latest FF before this week
didnt notice when it started - use plugin irregularly

Heh, especially considering they have their own "proprietary virtual memory technology", it's even more silly it won't run without a windows pagefile :P
absolutely  :tellme:
9432
tomos: it simply refuses to run without, even though you have plenty of RAM? Interesting... and what a silly limitation to impose :)

could it be to do with fact it was released in 1999 when they probably couldnt imagine people using it on computers with 2 gigabyites ... and if they could, they probably presumed I would have upgraded by now ... ;D

I dug this out
from the Photoshop 5.5 help:-
When your system does not have enough RAM to perform an operation, Adobe Photoshop uses a proprietary virtual memory technology, also called the scratch disks. Virtual memory is disk space used for storing data during a work session when the amount of RAM is insufficient. (This scratch disk space is not a Windows swap file or Mac OS virtual memory, but is used only when working in Photoshop.)
...
The amount of free space on the scratch disk must be greater than or equal to the amount of RAM you have allocated to Photoshop. To ensure good performance, Photoshop writes the entire RAM contents to the scratch disks during idle times. If the scratch disks run out of free space, Photoshop quits taking additional RAM—regardless of what you have allocated to the program. This means that if you’ve allocated 60 MB to Photoshop [1999 standards :) ] but you have only 10 MB of free space on your scratch disk, Photoshop will use only 10 MB of RAM.
9433
just btw:
I have a (very) old version of photoshop (5.5)
wont run unless I have a paging file & I do use it fairly regularly so I have a paging file again :)

Living Room / Re: Simply Google

I've always felt that if you couldn't figure out how to use the tools at your disposal, you didn't deserve to find what you were looking for
booo allen :P
for some of us it takes a bit longer to figure out these things than for others - also, how in the name of god is your "average" basic computer user supposed to figure out all the whachamacallem google keywords/symbols
I figure out things as I need them, the problem is if I need them very seldom, I cant figure out how to use them when I need them ...

I wouldn't call "Simply Google" simple at all. "Direct Google" would be a better name for it
agreed :)
9435
from what I've read it's improved a lot since it came out - I havent tried it - I think Zaine had tried it but think it was too "new" at that stage for the roundup
9436
tomos: the application minidumps (ie., a standard program that crashes and fires up DrWatson) don't require pagefile - only the BSOD-produced dumps.

gotcha :)
9437
You shouldn't have no swap file at all - and you should have a small swap file on the windows drive (64Mb minimum). Without a 64Mb swap file on the OS partition you won't be able to use any debugging messages from Windows when there is a problem. In order to trace system faults Windows needs to produce a 'mini-dump' and can't do that without at least a 64Mb Pagefile.sys on C: (or whichever drive windows is installed to).
-Carol Haynes (July 06, 2008, 07:40 AM)

is that courtesy of that DrWatson thingy?
It would (usually) seize up my computer if a programme crashed - microsoft told me to disable it (their solution to the problem - others were obviously having the same problem cause there was a page dedicated to the problem)

EDIT/ dug up the ms link - error report for the Drwtsn32.exe debugger

I'm sorry I was probably a bit snippy there, I forget how much of a pain in the a** it is to read through such a long thread

no, no!
& I for my part really meant the "thanks" & didnt mean to sound defensive -
I skimmed the thread which practically guarantees I'm going to miss something ;D

Try new MouseScroll! You can switch in the Alt+Tab menu to next or previous item only by <Win>+scroll wheel up or down.
If you release the <Win>-key, then selected item(window) will activated. To escape Alt+Tab menu just press down <Esc> while you holding <Win>.
Also one very useful preview feature I found, testing MouseScroll: if you press down <Alt> while <Win> is holds you can see (check) the selected item(window). It will be activated, but Alt+Tab menu do not hide. If selected item is not you want to switch to, you can continue to scroll mouse, selecting other items in the Alt+Tab menu and preview them by <Alt>.

wow,
that's really nice now wep

great!

I tried out the MouseScroll,
Firstly,
I misunderstood it - I thought it would show & scroll through the "box" shown when you Alt+Tab (must look, think there's something like that here...)
Second:
is this a bug? - it scrolls through all windows in one direction (forwards), but it only scrolls between the two last shown windows when I scroll in opposite direction

It seems that SFFS cannot do partial file update at the moment with Amazon S3
(If I get a chance I'll try it via Jungle Disk & report back)

The Jungle Disk Plus threshold for "Block-level file updates" is 1MB which is very good
If, for example you're tagging photos it could be very helpful

Apparently a lot of people use the Block-level file update for True Crypt containers - anyone here doing that?

might be worth buying software all right.
Does probably work out much cheaper than doing an intensive course, but, if you have the time, doing an intensive course can be good fun.

As a noncoder who wanted to start an "IT_Analphabetic's" club with Curt (but I was too un-organised to get it together :-\) I think I qualify to start a series of post's highlighting dc member's sites which have very little to do with software :)

First (I only have two sites in mind so feel free to contribute!) is Brett's photos (link for site @ end of post)

Brett01.png

One of the things I like about dc is the variety of people from all over the world that are involved. Well, Brett is the other side of the world from me so I find myself fascinated by these photographs of foreign landscapes

Brett02.png

I'm not the best of critics but I just really like these photos
Having some small connection with the person who took them helps too of course (no disclaimer required :P)

go have a look!

I'm giving up on threatfire
-
over the last few months it has on a number of occasions seized up when giving a warning notice (usually when I'm installing something)
The warning box often doesnt display properly, not showing the options (allow, quarantine, - from memory)
Yesterday it did show properly but when I clicked allow I got no response

Unfortunately the proplem then is that you cant actually kill the programme, not using process explorer at any rate and the only solution seems to be the restart button, which also didnt work properly yesterday so I had to pull the plug on everything & start again
Not nice to have to do that

ironically they have a survey on their website which I tried to do twice over that time adding a note about this problem
Both times the site froze when I finished survey but before it eh went through ...
They may have a forum or maybe I'll email them, but I'm not going to risk actually using it any more :(
9448
ubcd4win definitely works on NFTS
see this page for list of tools - has the Kapersky AV standalone one, read something about that lately (off to put my brain on the rack ... was it here, dont think so...)

Since 2.14.01 FarrFox doesn't work for me.
No results at all.

I get results from IE, none from last FF version 2

edit/
wtf. can you guys check your advanced options of farrfox and see if maybe some checkboxes got unchecked?
also can you check that you have farrfox version 1.08.01 installed?
all checkboxes ticked
1.08.01 installed

looking around a bit in Amazon S3 -
it's not very accessible without Jungle Disk is it!? (well, it took a while to even figure out I was already logged in)
Make that pretty much totally inaccessible (to me at any rate..)

If you have Super Flexible File Synchronizer & can figure out how to create a "Bucket" (basically your folder/file container) in S3,
it seems easy to use SFFS to backup directly to S3
(in Advanced Mode, create or edit a profile and click on the "Internet..." button. Change drop-down setting from ftp to Amazon S3. More details here)
- I'm not sure if Partial file update is supported.

Will probably get Jungle Disk anyway cause I think it allows SFFS to use partial file update
Also, it's great to be able to browse your backups & keep an overview and have it all so accessible
