Living Room / Re: would you run a logger that counts how often you see each word?
« Last post by Deozaan on October 17, 2006, 01:52 PM »
So if I read my Gmail where sometimes I e-mail myself information I'll want to keep for later, such as usernames and passwords to websites or FTP accounts, it would parse that information and it would log it and send it to you?

I think I'll pass on this one. I certainly trust you, but I don't like the risk of my private information being out there in some word database that other people might get a hold of. With the way I use the internet and websites, the risk is fairly high to me.

The death song sounds so familiar but I can't think of a title or even where I heard it, except that it almost sounds like one of the songs from Broken Saints.

it takes the same effort, so all words.

How would it log the words? I don't want my passwords or credit card  or bank account numbers being logged.

Wow, that's probably the most "clean cut" I've seen him.

Anyone else see a resemblance to his gangsta outfit and Kip from Napolean Dynamite after he meets Lafawnduh? The braces, the half-grown moustache, the doo-rag. . .

This reminds me of my very favorite chart in the entire history of the internet, which i think is possibly one of the coolest things i've ever seen

Ha, yeah. I've lived in Idaho for as long as I can remember (with a short stint in Alaska before I can remember) and I visited New York State and was slightly ridiculed by my peers for saying "Pop." At that time I decided to start saying "Soda" since I figured that "Soda Pop" was the correct term and so saying either "Soda" or "Pop" could be appropriate. Then I returned back to Idaho and some months later at a family gathering my brother caught me saying "Soda" and he laughed at me.

Luckily I had an excuse. I was drinking a Jone's Soda. Hooray for a quick wit!

My brother has a problem where when I type URLs in the IM window they don't turn into hyperlinks in his GTalk. Anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this? He has uninstalled and reinstalled the latest versions.

Also, does anyone know how to change the default directory for saving GTalk received files? They can't add all these features without having options for them!

Living Room / Windows Vista Pronunciation
« Last post by Deozaan on October 17, 2006, 11:42 AM »
My brother lived in Spain for a couple of years and after he returned, he had one of his Spanish friends visit my family for a couple months. My family has also had exchange students from other countries, including two from Spain. I took three years of Spanish in high school, and I currently have a Mexican sharing this apartment with me.

Whenever I see or say Vista I automatically pronounce it the Spanish way, "Vee-stuh," but pretty much everyone else I know says it the other way. I'm just curious to see if anyone else pronounces it differently than they would in their native language.

I agree with f0dder.

I didn't like how my paycheck went down when I went to a new phase. :-( But by the end with 4 SAM sites, 3 Bio cannons, and 3 turrets, plus auto-repair and faster movement of my regular cannon, I was unstoppable.

From my understanding, web accelerators just cache pages. So if you're visiting pages you haven't seen before, or refreshing old pages, you're pretty much wasting your time.

I think an absolutely killer db to have is how often *each* individual sees different words. I'm planning to run an experiment on what I call "personal history corpus"... I cannot post the details here.

If I created one, would you run a logger that counts how often you see each word? I'd pay you (as it is customary in psych experiments) and probabl ask you to do some experimental task (related to memory). But first I need to have the counts of say your last week online (the more the better).

So would you do it? I cannot recompose what you read (for privacy, your data would be anonymous anyway), but the counts may still give you a certain feeling of what the person reads.

Every single word we ever see? Or just certain words?

I've never learned how to do this myself, but working for a few very large corporations they've seemed to have the admin accounts set the defaults for users/guests, which then other users/guests couldn't change.

I'm not too fond of them either. I don't like that they use proprietary format and DMR so they can only be played in iTunes or iPod. I want to play them in WinAmp on an mp3 disc or however I want to listen to my music. It's my music.

iTunes and I think Windows Media Player lets you rate songs/media files. But that's probably not what you're asking for.

Most compressions utilities are good enough that archiving an archive of an archive doesn't save much on hard drive space.

If you just want to see what happens, open up a few archive utilities and do it. Much easier than writing a program.

General Software Discussion / Re: Playing FLV files
« Last post by Deozaan on October 09, 2006, 12:22 PM »
I had to download a FLV player, and it works fine.  BUT:

Can someone explain why it takes a dedicated FLV player to play downloaded Flash files?

Why can't they simply be played using a browser?

What's the difference between a downloaded FLV file and one that resides on a website, in other words, why does Flash open up when you go to the website, but if you paste the downloaded file in the URL window, it just does nothing?

Is there a way to invoke Flash without using the browser?

Thanks!

Generally speaking, what you see in your browser is embedded into the website via html. That's why you can see it on a web page but not if you download it and try to run it on your computer. Flash does have a Stand-Alone player, but I'm not sure how to get it. It comes with Flash when you install it. However, if I'm not mistaken, you can construct your own dummy html page that embeds the file so you can watch it in your browser offline.

Living Room / Re: Deleting Folders that don't want to be deleted
« Last post by Deozaan on October 08, 2006, 08:27 PM »
This might be worth trying:

1. Open a command prompt
2. "cd" to the folder which contains the folder you can't delete.
3. Type "dir /x", and look in the resulting dir listing for the offending folder. You should hopefully see the "short" version of the folder name to the left of the normal name.
4. Type "rd <name>" where <name> is the short name of the folder.

HTH.

This worked. I thought I tried command prompt before, but I guess I forgot the command to delete the folder. I think I was using "delete" instead of "rd"

I'll run scandisk anyway.

Thanks everyone!

Wholly Carp! But would anybody seriously use that? It's 16.5 FEET wide. You'd need to have a roller chair with a wireless keyboard and mouse to take with you.
