DesktopCoral / Re: A custom-compilation of DesktopCoral
« Last post by mouser on July 18, 2013, 09:21 AM »
Greetings and welcome to the site.

You have my permission to include DesktopCoral with your program.

The only thing you need to be aware of is that when you do so, users will not have a license key installed for it, which means that, while the program will continue to run fine, it will show them a message on startup asking them to visit our site for a free license key.  That's an important part of how we make sure people know we depend on user donations.  As long as you are ok with that (and don't include *your* license key along with the installation), then you certainly have our permission.

MEWLO Web Framework / The Mewlo web framework - I'm Looking for Teammates
« Last post by mouser on July 17, 2013, 09:17 AM »
I have restarted my Yumps project from scratch, this time coding in Python.

The new project name is "Mewlo".

What is Mewlo?

  • Mewlo is an Open Source framework/library which allows coders to build custom community-based (user accounts, groups, projects, forum, etc.) web services.
  • The aim of Mewlo is to provide the absolute best implementation of the common infrastructure of code seen in so many community-based web services.
  • Mewlo supports robust user and group accounts, social-website features (user profiles, messaging, forums, etc.), and it offers strong support for community moderators to manage users and site content.  It is designed to perform well on large sites.
  • Note that Mewlo is a framework for coders, it's not a content management system for non-coders.  One should *NOT* expect to set up a Mewlo site without writing a single line of code, the way you would set up a content management system or blog.

There is now a website for Mewlo:

And a github source code repository here:

I will be posting more here about Mewlo in the coming days and weeks.  If there are Python coders out there who want to join the project, I can't promise anything but some experience working on a large project, but I'd love to have some serious collaborators.

blank captures are due to a security program being an ass:

Pressing Alt+C will also copy to the clipboard and dismiss the dialog, same as left clicking the button. Wouldn't Ctrl+C be better? Or, did you stick with the Alt key as a modifier to maintain standard dialog behavior?

no need for any modifier, just hit C.

I noticed that using the quick Copy to Clipboard option, the drop shadow Post Capture Effect is not captured in the image.

hmm, let me have another look.

This also creates a saved file of the image. Is there a way to do the same without saving a file, just copy to clipboard?

there is an option at the very bottom of the "More Interface Options" tab labeled "Don't Auto Save Captures"
9206
I think these are the settings you want, let me know:
Screenshot - 7_16_2013 , 9_54_15 AM -.png

Now when the post-capture dialog comes up, just hit C to copy to clipboard (or escape to cancel), and there's nothing more to do.

don't even think about that.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Fixed size window, in center of screen
« Last post by mouser on July 15, 2013, 04:11 PM »
The easiest thing for me would be if there were a program where the capture rectangle size could be fixed, had crosshairs at the center, and could be dragged to the point of interest for each capture.

Give me a couple of days and I can have a mode in Screenshot Captor that can do exactly this.  It's mostly already in place if you know how to use RedBox capture mode, i just need to add an option to show crosshairs in center.

This sounds like a job for MiniCap, the little brother of Screenshot Captor, which can be invoked via commandline and you can tell it EXACTLY the region on the screen to capture from by indicating the top, left, bottom, right coordinates.  After a little experimenting you'll have exactly the region you want and be able to trigger it via commandline.

You could also do this with Screenshot Captor by using RedBox capture mode and when you get the region exactly right, you would do REPEAT region captures after that.

But it still sounds to me like MiniCap might be the way to go for you.

My experience with off-brand li-ion batteries: They work well enough to justify buying them.

However, they do rarely work completely as well as the originals, and sometimes the camera won't recognize them until you re-insert a couple times, etc.  and i know for my video camera they require manual button push to begin and don't show proper time remaining on them.

Still, with the price difference, i think they are the smart buy.

As for which brands work well -- I just look for reviews on amazon or newegg and avoid brands without reviews.

They say it has a 300ft range.
The previous brand I had was a colossal pain to get and keep the base and sensor "synchronized"; this one seems care free.

As far as gadgets go, you can do a lot worse than a "weather station".

I've gone through a couple but here's my current favorite:
02038w-display-800x800_1_1.jpg

It's $55, looks great, and has the features I love:
  • Shows BOTH indoor and outdoor temperature and humidity (with highs and lows for both), at the same time (outdoor sensor included).
  • Shows current date and time, and has internal clock battery so won't lose time when losing power.
  • Powered by included ac adapter (warning: will *not* run purely off batteries for long)
  • It also tries to predict weather and shows moon phase but i think those are useless.

For some reason it's not for sale on amazon -- but is available at the maker's site: http://www.acurite.c...humidity-02038w.html

Note:
There are a million of these weather stations sold at all kinds of price points.  Personally this one hits the sweet spot for me in terms of displaying nicely all the key information without lots of extra useless info.

I'm going to offer the first 50% of the book as a free preview on Smashwords.

i don't think there is any reason not to make 50% of the book available for those that want it --
HOWEVER, there is probably some real value in using a very short preview to those who want to get a flavor of it.

too often we neglect the fact that people become easily overwhelmed by information, and we are particularly vulnerable to this when we are the creators and are intimately familiar with the content.

i'd encourage you to consider having one of your proofreaders pick out a very short section (1 chapter? 5 pages?) that best captures the flavor/feel of the work, and use that small excerpt for these kinds of previews.

then if you want to make 50% or 75% of the book downloadable on your homepage, that's another matter and seems fine.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Mouse over hints
« Last post by mouser on July 12, 2013, 07:02 PM »
Right now you have to set the hints manually for each item -- but i think it's a good idea to have an option for a dock to automatically use captions as hints when the captions are not shown on the dock.. I will add it.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Why does everything go white?
« Last post by mouser on July 12, 2013, 01:38 PM »
I'm assuming you are talking about using Screenshot Captor.
The answer is that you have a security utility that is doing this without informing you of it, in order to "protect" you.

See this thread for how to fix:

What are you trying to do skostro?
9225
Vurbal, welcome to the site!

And thank you for such a great post.

I have a lot of experience with video encoding, a decent familiarity with the ffmpeg command line and AviSynth has been my go to video editing tool for close to a decade now.

This would actually be of great help, because i have 0 experience with codecs and avisynth, and what i would really love is to understand some common profiles that i could offer the user so that ESR could easily convert to file formats that would be easy for people to upload to youtube, etc.

I have a couple of other projects to work on but i'd love to revisit ESR and get the program to a state where it can really live up to it's name.  Right now the program would probably be more accurately called "Half-easy, Half-painfully-difficult screencast recorder"..

After more than a year of playing around with LaunchBar Commander off and on I'm making it the center piece of some articles for the website I work for (AfterDawn.com btw) which will also include some videos for our YouTube channel.

Awesome

Afterdawn: very cool!!
