I just posted a link on FB that I thought was hilarious: http://www.facebook.com/JeffreyRyanSmyth

But I must warn, it may be offensive to some, and my comments could be as well. I found it insanely funny though.

Spoiler

`Hitler' heater ads draw fire from all quarters

ADVERTISING A promotional campaign for German-made DBK space heaters featuring an image of Hitler has sparked outrage from both German and Israeli trade and culture officials in Taipei

http://www.taipeitim...ves/1999/11/23/11877

"Declare war on the cold front!"
This actually happened! They put an ad out with Hitler to sell space heaters!

I can just imagine the TV ad... Our space heaters will keep you toasty warm! But just wait until you see our ovens!

The hostility towards VB is... probably because the entry barrier is so low. Too many people who shouldn't be programming

There's more to it than that. If that were it, there would be just as much or even more disgust for PHP. It's part of it, but there's more to it than just that. The barrier for PHP is even lower.

The domain name would be perfect for raising awareness about extreme poverty. The issue is likely closer to home for me though than for a lot of people here.

However, in order to really be useful, that sort of a site needs a huge amount of work and resources. A better use would be the zombie, vampire and lycan idea. Put them in a nice light about how they really just need humans to feed. You could put ads on a site like that to direct people to actual charities though. That could work nicely.

My wife is constantly taking pictures of food. All the time. Her friends do the same thing! :) I'm sure she'd be a good contributor~! :P

Why not combine the two ideas and have sophisticated looking zombies eating people in fine dinning/gourmet settings.

Hmmm... Zombies eating poor people might be good too. Or at least in the spirit of the Dead Kennedys. :P

I definitely not in the same boat.

Then again, measuring the distance between where I am and where my friends are can be rounded to the nearest 1,000 km and still be close enough.

I love Facebook.
I'm on Twitter, but don't use it a lot.
I bought a top of the line phone, but hate talking on it. It's really just for development when I get around to it.
I love Skype. It's better than talking on the phone as I don't need to hold something pressed against my face. I just talked to my sister on Skype. She's half way around the world in a desert that I have no interest in visiting. I use Skype to talk to a friends that I do business with. I avoid long distance charges when calling North America, which makes support phone calls to my IDC dirt cheap. Especially as Australian telcos charge far more for far less than anyone else.

Facebook is great because the amount of time it takes to keep up with people is nothing. It's a time saver. I keep in contact with all kinds of people that I wouldn't be able to otherwise. I just don't have enough to say to email a lot of people. A quick post or comment is all that is needed.

But a support site for people that are averse to Facebook might be a good idea. kissmyassbook.com? :P Hey, it's at the other *end* of the spectrum. :D

Damn lol, If I had known u was moving, I could have hooked you up with:

Intel Xeon Quad 1.86 GHz
4x500 GB SATA 2 Hard Drives
1400 GB Traffic
4 GB DDR3 Memory
Gbit Network Cards
and 3 Dedicated IPs

(All *nix OS)

for around $260USD/month with free setup haha

Sigh... Oh well.

Where is it hosted? That's really cheap.

I'm pretty skittish about where I put servers as I've been burned repeatedly by different companies. But 4 Xeon procs? Wow. And 2 TB of storage? Nice. It's VERY tempting!

I almost posted here too. I was going to ask about what people thought, or if they had any recommendations. Oh well. I'll console myself with knowing that where I am is safe. :)

I find Facebook quite nice to use. I can keep in contact with friends that I otherwise would never see. I've even managed to reestablish relationships with friends that I've not seen in 10 or 15 or 20 years.

VB.NET is a fantastic language. It's much easier to use for beginners, and still offers truckloads of power. I'm not sure why there's so much hostility towards it from a lot of people. People always seem to look down on it.

I think the acid test for a language should be, "Does it let you get things done efficiently?" That will depend on what you're doing, and not all languages are appropriate to all tasks, but that doesn't make a language bad because it's not appropriate for a specific task.

Well here's some VERY disturbing information about Garmin's 3790T, their $500 top of the line model:
OK . . . now on to the PROBLEM. This thing has POPUP ADS. Yes - commercial popups, like "Crabfest at Red Lobster" and "Best Western Rewards - Get 1500 points" and "Unlimited lunch $6.90" that pop up while you are driving, and take up screen space, obscuring the damn map. I called tech support, and they said that these are not supposed to pop up while you are moving, only while you are stopped. But these came up while I was driving today. Tech support says there is NO WAY THE POPUP ADS CAN BE DISABLED. Apparently it's built into the license with Navteq and will happen whenever you are receiving traffic information, and they cannot disable it. How is this OK? They don't mention it in the product specs, or on the box. I am paying hundreds of dollars for this device, and I cannot opt-out from popup ads?$#@!% Garmin seriously needs to get a firmware patch (or a hardware patch if it's part of the traffic receiver) out to allow people to disable this. The popups don't even have an "X" in the corner for you to press to get rid of them.
I swear, these companies can be such assholes sometimes.  A top of the line model that costs hundreds of dollars should NOT have any sort of advertising on it.  Assholes...there's just no other word for it.

WTF?

That's what I ended up replacing my TomTom with. The Garmin 3790T. $500 and top of the line.

But it doesn't have ads. To be honest, I think whoever is saying that is either lying or there's something else going on. Perhaps a subsidized model? I'm inclined to think it's just someone lying.

Where did you read that?

A friend of mine says, "C is the answer." Not C++. C. He's brilliant. He's the guy teaching the multiple PhDs at the premiere government technology think-tank about programming. I have a lot of respect for him. He's got more programming talent in his thumbnail than I'll ever have.

But... He's a freak. A brilliant freak. But a freak. Very few people are that good.

There are even freaks out there that love assembler.

Then... There are the rest of us. The ones that are good, but not gifted. Most programmers.

And then... There is the reality that at the end of the day, empty plates suck, big dinners rock, and C doesn't put food on the plate for most people.

I've got other friends that have been doing C/C++ for years, and when they discovered .NET, it was a revelation for them. They love it. They can get more done easier and faster.

Now, I'm going to get into some radical stuff and likely piss some people off. i.e. Nothing surprising. ;)

Perhaps a few people might remember HTML, as in HTML 1.0 all the way up to 4.01. It was fault tolerant. It enabled the Internet because it wasn't impossible to use. SGML is a beast. A nasty beast. Completely unsuitable for humans. HTML on the other hand has been wonderful.

Now, if you're a purist, you should likely be frowning on that dirty, nasty, sloppy HTML, and tout a much more robust and refined language like SGML. Ahem... Houston, we have a problem...

The reality is that it's usually pretty silly to look down on most languages. Here's a good example - PHP. Now, if you look at PHP, you have multiple methods that do the exact same thing. That is, when given the same input, the methods return the same output. This is bad. Very bad. Now, if you believed that, you have a problem because you probably don't understand PHP or C# or some other languages very well, or probably more correctly, you're confusing frameworks and libraries for the language itself. Those redundant PHP methods come in different modules and libraries. It's not a problem with the core PHP language. In the same way, frowning on C# is rather silly. Even if you hate .NET, which is NOT C#. The C# language is just a language. If someone wanted to, they could write a compiler that compiled C# to native code. You can use C directly from some command line shells. That doesn't mean that C is an interpreted language.

When it comes to JIT, well, it's a price that you pay. But seriously... Is startup time all THAT important? If a program takes 5 seconds or 15 seconds, so what? Is it annoying? Sure. Is it a deal breaker? Certainly not.

But what do you get in return?

Productivity.

Managed code.

Both of those are big deals. Very big deals. Managed code is simply the way of the future. With software projects becoming larger and larger, managed code offers, well... who cares. It's not really all that interesting.

What IS interesting is productivity. When a programmer can get done the same task in half the time as he would with other tools, this is good. It makes software development more profitable, which makes more software products viable, which puts more choices out there for consumers. It also makes possible projects that otherwise would not be profitable due to productivity issues. This makes niche software viable in areas that would otherwise go ignored.

All this is good for us as consumers.

As for .NET software out there, there's a LOT. Magic the Gathering Online is a .NET application. There are plenty of them out there in the consumer world, and not just the line-of-business application and server world.

There are times when C, C++, C# or whatever language you want to name just isn't appropriate. Not all languages are suited to all tasks. F#, Haskel, Erlang and other functional languages are very good at mathematics. Can you do the same things with C? Sure. Would you want to? Maybe and maybe not. It's all case by case.

C# is a great general programming language that really works well for a lot of things. But, it's a lot like chocolate ice cream - there are people out there that really like strawberry a lot more. That doesn't make strawberry or chocolate bad or good. It just makes them different.

As for Mono, well, again, it has a time and a place. And yes, there is software out there for consumers done in Mono.

The problem there is that unless you SEE the .NET framework (or Mono) installed, there's no good way to just tell if it's a .NET/Mono program or not. And a lot of them simply invisibly install with no indication that they are .NET/Mono. Why would they? Do you care? I certainly don't. When I use a program, I couldn't care less what language it is done in. Well, except for Objective-C because it's evil sent from the Devil and only total douchebags use it. Errr... Well, that might not be true, but it just felt good to say it anyways~! :P

I suppose we techies just love our holy wars!

Somehow I can't help feeling that you might not be as objective on the subject as some others here ;))

...

I'm not averse to other brands (my current player is an IRiver, and it's been excellent), I was just trying to get an alternative viewpoint on iPods seeing as our retailers don't seem to stock anything else.  Ideally I'm looking for a device that is in no way proprietry, ie one that doesn't require special software or drivers to charge or manage (effectively it would be USB key with a music player built in...), but that wasn't actually the point of this thread

That's about as unbiased as I get. Well, on this topic anyways. I at least said some nice things about the iPod before I pointed out all it's bad points. :)

As for a USB key with a music player built in, you can get a decent player for $30 or $50 now easy. They're all pretty much the same, except for the proprietary ones that try to lock you in, like the iPod. And they're all made in China. I think I'd go for a cheapo now if I were to buy another.

Living Room / New Toys :D
« Last post by Renegade on November 17, 2010, 12:43 AM »
Sigh... I love new toys, but hate constantly shelling out a small fortune for them...

I just got a new phone, the HTC Desire HD, and it's a nice toy, but can I stop there? No...

Actually, it really wasn't a matter of choice for this one -- I've needed a new server badly for a while and finally got around to it.

Anyways, for the juicy stuff...

Dual Xeon 5430 procs with 4 GB RAM and 2 x  250 GB SATA II drives. Lots enough for what I'll need it for.

That server lists for about $563 a month, but I managed to steal one for just over $300 a month at Soft Layer through one of their promotions. :) Yay~!

I've been with The Planet for years now, and they've always been excellent. If I were to move, I'd move to Rackspace, but that's simply too expensive for me at the moment.

But, Soft Layer & The Planet have merged, so while I haven't moved, it looks like I'll have 2 control panels. Oh well. I'll end up ditching the old server shortly I think. Then buy it back when it hits the bargain bin for a third what I'm paying now. :) Just kidding.

I'm confident that Soft Layer will live up to the same quality as The Planet. We'll see though. So far everything is pretty smooth. A hiccup with my new user name and password, but nothing serious, and they're on top of fixing it now.

Oh, I should mention that the server was ready in less than 2 hours! Sweet! It used to take days to get a server up and running.

Now... I just pray that I don't need any more toys... :D

Next it's just a matter of migrating everything over seamlessly with zero down time. Which ironically, is time consuming in itself.

Just had to tell someone -- it's always exciting starting up a new production server! :)

If you like easy and have lots of money and aren't worried about compatibility, the iPod is a good choice. It's actually a good device. (iTunes is another matter entirely.)

Apple, like many other large companies, is risk averse, and what that means is poor format support. No OGG, no FLAC, etc.

Smaller companies aren't so averse to risk and will include FLAC and OGG support along with others.

If you're an audiophile, WMA is one of the best formats out there. WMA lossless is excellent. WMA lossey still beats MP3. FLAC is lossless, and excellent, and open.

If you have a lot of wave files, an iPod is a poor choice as iPod wave format support is very poor.

Sony's proprietary formats are also a very bad idea.

I'd say have a look at COWON as they are aggressive and hungry. But I have a bit of an irrational affection for them, so YMMV. The X7 and the J3 look very slick. One other good thing about COWON is that they offer far better compatibility than just about anyone else out there. Oh, and battery power -- the company puts a lot of focus on that with some of the best in the industry (I could be out of date though - check some recent reviews).

http://en.wikipedia....rtable_media_players

I don't know about Samsung players. Years ago their UI design was absolute crap in their phones, but they've come a VERY long way. Might be worth looking at.

Not sure about Sony.

There are a trillion players out there with no name that are really cheap. You could get one for $30 then figure out what you like/hate about it and go for a better one. MP3 players are literally disposable now.

Phones are a bad way to go. Their batteries just don't stand up enough for media playback. Especially video.

iPods have had a bad run with battery power. Not sure about the most recent ones.

Anyways, just my $0.02. Hope it helps.

Quick Stupid Question: Shouldn't the tag line be Don't Drink the Kewl Aid ?

Probably. I just tried to keep it very short as when I made the Wordpress site, "kewlaid.wordpress.com" was being used, so I had to have something else, and "drinkthekewlaid.wordpress.com" or "drinkingkewlaid.wordpress.com" seemed like the best and shortest options. Either way it should be obvious enough, and positive titles work better usually.

Type the e-mail address of another WordPress.com user to add them to your blog.

So what I need is people to PM me their email addresses. Make sure to sign up at Wordpress.com though. Once you're signed up, then I can add you. You just need to have an account there.

And does anyone know the difference between a "Contributor" and an "Author"? (Too painful to search at the moment.)

This is going to be fun~! :D

[Renegade]: No takers/volunteers to help me start up a new blog and rant a bit?
Deozaan? nudone? Zaine?

Oh trust me, I'd love it. But my experience with Apple products is second-hand, from friends and relatives who have them and let me play with them for an afternoon or longer. I admit that gadgets look cool, but I'm always amused that Apple users think their crap does something that others' do not. My openSUSE Linux system kicks butt, yet Linux Mint is far more polished on the edges. And I won't even start with Windows 7, since the vast majority of Apple users don't even know 15% of its capabilities. They'll scoff and guffaw every single time you mention that, uh, "My Linux system was capable of that 'feature; six years ago. What took Apple so long?"

oops!  ;)

Consider yourself hired!

But my experience with Apple products is second-hand, from friends and relatives who have them and let me play with them for an afternoon or longer.

This is so completely irrelevant. :) There are licensing issues, general douchiness, fanboys, media campaigns, outdated or recycled technology touted as new and revolutionary... There's no end to the ranty possibilities with Apple!

Here's a good starting point...

THINK DIFFERENT!
