Living Room / Re: Any ideas for a save website crawler for offline reading?
« Last post by rjbull on April 03, 2012, 04:23 PM »
Obvious suggestion, contact Tonec about IDM crashing.  There are lots of other download managers, at least some of which have Web crawling ability.  I'm pretty sure I've done it with Free Download Manager (FDM) but don't have it installed here and can't work out from the Web site whether it can do logins...  can't work it out from ReGet Deluxe either  :(

Maybe WebReaper (donationware)?  It does mention
Proxy & website authentication, allowing websites with passwords or behind firewalls to be reaped.

ArsClip 4.0.0 has a revamped popup menu. Me likes!
The new menus aren't the only improvements, and Joe is working on it at a rapid pace.  Look at the list of changes in the beta section...

As long as you're willing to pay to register, it looks like Internet Download Manager (IDM) can.  From the Grabber Wizard. Creating a project section of Help:
Step 1. Set a start page

On the first step of the wizard you should specify the start page. By default, http protocol is assumed; other protocols like https are required to be specified explicitly. The start page also sets the current site. For example if you specified http://www.tonec.com/support/index.html, the current site would be www.tonec.com with all supported protocols like ftp, https, http applied to this site name.

If a site requires authorization, you should also set login and password on this step. Some sites allow browsing/downloading only after authentication on a certain page. In this case you should press on "Advanced>>" button, check "Enter login and password manually" box, and specify the page to login to the site. Also if the site has a logout button, you should specify here the logout pages that the Grabber should not open. If you set the login page, the Grabber will open a browser window after the fourth step and let you login to the site manually before proceeding with exploring and downloading.
[...]
If you need to download all pictures, video or audio files from a website, or download a complete web site, you may select the appropriate template in Project template listbox. Project templates make it easy to start your projects quickly, because all required settings are made automatically.

Sanity check - I run IDM all the time, but haven't tried that particular feature.

General Software Discussion / Re: Program to control program
« Last post by rjbull on April 02, 2012, 04:01 PM »
I refer to alternatives to ClickOff but more general. ClickOff have the ability to interact with the program to close some windows.
But it's resident all the time.
    [...]
What I am looking now is a more powerful script than the one ClickOff is, but resident only when I am executing the main program.

There are various alternatives to ClickOff, some free, some not.

    • PTFB Pro
      • Automatically respond to prompts, popups and information requests
      • From a simple button press to complex sequences of actions
      • Powerful, full featured auto clicker and macro recorder
      • Automatically restart programs that hang or are not responding
      • Resize and reposition windows whenever they appear
      • Packed full of features for professional environments
      • Quick & easy to use
    • RtvReco
RtvReco is designed to automate many aspects of Windows, by pressing buttons in annoying dialog boxes, choosing menu items, maximising, and minimising windows for you.
    • PowerPro
      • Running commands: Tool bars, tray icons, hot keys, mouse actions, menus, timer, scheduler.
      • Controlling other program's windows: Close, minimize, maximize, roll-up to caption, tray minimize, position.
      • Providing utility functions: Send keystrokes to programs, run commands when windows first open, virtual desktops, clipboard extender, keyboard macros, shutdown, show all folder files in a menu, sounds, wallpaper, and screensaver activation and randomization.

PowerPro is free.  The other two are payware, but there is certainly an old free version of PTFB around the net, and I think of RtvReco too.  I currently use the paid-for version of PTFB Pro.

The problem is your requirement that they not be resident - I think they have to be, to work at all.  If you only want things to operate at certain times, there are ways round it.  For example, you could use the scheduler in PowerPro, or Kirby Alarm Pro, to only launch the programs at a certain time.  Then you could use the scheduler again with, say, Taskill to (brutally) kill the process at a later time.

Finished Programs / Re: SOLVED: Copy Text From Error Windows

    @vmars316:
You might try Pete's Window Tool or SysExporter or CopyText or maybe CopyMessageBox, though the latter is getting rather old.

But, I still expect the OCR method should be most reliable.
    909
    Hope it works for you.

My thought processes are somewhat sluggish   ;)  here's another thought.

If you only have a small number of predefined files, here's another Horst Schaeffer program that doesn't seem to be on his Web site any more: ClipTX.
ClipTX 0.10 - Clipboard to file
    -------------------------------

ClipTX appends (plain) text from the clipboard to one of several predefined target files. ClipTX only acts on hotkey or mouse click (no automatic collection). The "Quick save" function (hotkey or click on system tray icon) saves the clipboard text to the default target file.
It's very small, so I've attached it.

However, if I understand things correctly, ArsClip might be your best bet.
    910
You could use ClipText with a bit of batch file magic, using another of Horst's programs, LMOD, which can be used to renumber files.  Or just a simple batch,

    if exist foo1.bar ren foo1.bar foo2.bar
    cliptext to foo1.bar

etc.  You could presumably set a Windows shortcut for the batch file.  This would work as you're going along.  If you can accumulate all the clips you want, and only then export them all in one go, there are other possibilities.

The first one that came to mind involves money.  Try the NoteFrog™ version 2 Customer Preview.  Turn on Options -> Turn ON automatic clipboard capture.   Capture your clips.  When done, Stack -> Save Active Stack contents as individual items.  If you set, say, "out.txt" as the output file, you will get a file out.txt that contains a summary of all the clips, but also a set of files out0.txt, out1.txt, out3.txt, etc. which will contain each clip in a separate file.  This only works with NoteFrog v2 preview, it isn't in current full release 1.9.5.  They currently have a special offer of $19.95 for all future upgrades.

That idea made me look a little farther - and it turns out you don't need to pay anything!  You can do the same thing with my regular clipboard enhancer, ArsClip.  Suggest you try the 3.2.3 test 8 beta, the one I'm using now (the version 4 betas are early, not everything works yet).  This works similarly to the NoteFrog example above, but ArsClip is free, with donation possible.  Once you've accumulated your clips, popup ArsClip, System -> Edit History, and mark the clips you want to export from there.  The file names are always PopupClip0001.txt, PopupClip0002.txt, etc. and it looks like you can't change the base name, but you could use your file renamer of choice if you need to do that.   It may help to go into Configuration and adjust the number of clips in the popup to avoid having to go into Removed Clips as well as current ones.

Here on DC, mouser's ClipboardHelp+Spell (CHS) can export marked clips, but apparently only to a single CSV file.

Good thing calls like that are actually crimes here in Germany.

Plenty of the scam calls we get in the UK are from overseas.  It's hard for a national jurisdiction to cope with that.  Even if they could be traced, they couldn't be prosecuted locally.

You might find that Horst Schaeffer's freeware ClipText has a place in your workflow:
ClipText copies plain text from the Clipboard to a file or from a file to the Clipboard.

    Examples:
        ClipText to "My File.ext"
        ClipText from %temp%\my.txt

In case a text file with OEM (console) characters is to be read or written, option /OEM ensures that extended ASCII characters are handled properly.

Text can be appended to the Clipboard or to the file with the /append option.

Is that a bit short notice?

I wondered if the $10 yo-yo was just a slip of the mind, or a typo.  I wouldn't expect a jump of that much in a day.  I run WebSite-Watcher almost every day, so it was a sharp blip.

@phitsc: My main interest in EditPad Pro is that it is supposed to have a good WordStar mode.  Depending on how good the implementation is, and or writing text as opposed to code, I would find that a great blessing.

I had one of those phone calls today
    -cranioscopical (March 17, 2012, 01:51 PM)

I've had one "good" phone call this week, but five scam/spam calls, and it's only Tuesday.  Caller Line ID shows their number, so if it's hidden, or foreign, or "out of area," or something I just don't recognise, I ignore it and let the answering machine kick in.  Most scammers are now efficient at aborting at that point, but a worthless ring is disruptive and wastes my time.  I keep wondering about installing a hardware call-screening system like trueCall.  I once saw a favourable review of it in the UK's Computer Shopper magazine.  Their review of trueCall is here.

I've seen a report of this kind of scam in the UK's Which? (Consumer Association) magazine computing section.  The scammers want to install remote control software so that they can show you fake malware, or even install real malware, and charge you for "removing" it.  There have even been cases where they refused to give you back control of your PC until you paid them.  IIRC, the average cost to unaware users was of the order of £500.

Finished Programs / Re: DONE: delete certain filetypes from fav folder
    « Last post by rjbull on March 15, 2012, 04:48 PM »
Thank you, rjbull. Can it delete files older than just a few minutes? Or can it delete per file extension type only?
Yes to both; "age" is age in days, not minutes.
    DelAge32 - ver. 2.3 (c) 2003-2008, Horst Schaeffer
Deletes or moves files (path with file pattern) by age (number of days)
    Syntax:  DelAge32 filespec age [options]
    Options:
/created /accessed /modified (default) - file stamp used to evaluate age
      /includeRO - include read-only files
      /includeH  - include hidden files
      /includeS  - include system files
/includeRHS -include read-only, hidden and system files
      /recurse   - include subdirectories
      /subonly   - /recurse excluding initial directory
      /rd        - remove empty subdirectories
/move path - move files to specified path
/preview   - list, but no action
      /quiet     - no output

The process is: I download MWA music files, I convert them to MP3, I delete the downloaded files (wma and m3u), and obviously keep the converted ones, except the '.tunebite' that the converter created. The files to be deleted are placed in various subfolders, and seldom older than a few hours.
I do something similar.  I prefer to edit most of my forum posts in my text editor, and I use Text Editor Anywhere (TEA) as an aid in transferring text between forum and editor.  TEA saves its files.  I regularly archive them, but don't move them into the archive as I like to leave the most recent ones readily available.  The same batch file runs delage to delete all the ones that are 32 days or more old, by which time I wouldn't expect to need quick reference to them.  My current cleanup.bat, which does other things as well, looks something like this:

    @echo off
:: archive all Text Editor Anywhere text files (not just forum posts, all Web forms)
    "c:\Program Files\WinRAR\Rar.exe" u -ep -log="c:\Users\rjbull\backup\ForumPostBackups.log" "c:\Users\rjbull\backup\ForumPostBackups.rar" "c:\NoInst\Text Editor Anywhere\Temp\*.txt"
    :: Clean up
    c:\DOS\Utils\delage32.exe "c:\NoInst\Text Editor Anywhere\Temp\TextEditorAnywhere*.txt" 32 /quiet
    c:\DOS\Utils\delage32.exe "c:\NoInst\Text Editor Anywhere\Temp\TextEditorAnywhere*.bak" 10 /quiet
    c:\DOS\Utils\delage32.exe "c:\Users\rjbull\Documents\HippoEdit_backups\*.*" 32 /recurse /quiet
    cls
    exit
Note that I've set different deletion ages for *.txt and *.bak files.

Must be a sexy topic?   :)

As a minor tweak on skwire's batch file, you might like Horst Schaeffer's DelAge32:
DelAge32 deletes or moves files with a mimimum age given by the number of days.

    Syntax:   DelAge32 filespec days [options]

The files are specified by search pattern (e.g. *.* for all files), with relative or absolute path.

Options include: /recurse (subdirectories), /subonly (excluding initial directory), /includeRO, /includeH, /includeS, /rd (remove empty subdirectories), /move target, /created (use "created" time stamp instead "last modified"), /accessed ..

    Example:   DelAge32 "C:\some\where\*.*" 100 /recurse

Deleted files are listed with age (number of days). The output can be redirected to a file.
With option /preview the action can be safely tested without actually deleting or moving files.
I run batch files containing calls to DelAge32 routinely via my task scheduler, Kirby Alarm Pro.  That way I can keep files around for a while until I'm sure I'm not likely to need them again, and have them eventually automatically deleted by date without having to take manual action.

my problem was with changing between "edit" & "create" objects
Yes, I've hit that one too  :(

GUI improvement for changing between edit & create objects? (SC)

It is something you get used to, if you use it regularly, but for the first time user - or even for me when I hadn't used it in a long time, it was a real struggle :-[
You worked harder than I did at sorting it out.  One doesn't always have the time or energy to struggle with powerful tools, so it makes sense for casual users to have simpler ones to hand for emergencies.

On the other hand, powerful tools have their place.  I just saw this feature in the "What's New?" list for HyperSnap 7:
Big enhancements to HyperSnap drawing editor - all shapes drawn are now kept as separate objects. You may select them at any time, move, modify, delete. You may also imprint them permanently on the image at any time.
But... HyperSnap is another complicated one!  :o
