hamachi looks like a pretty decent app, but I don't like ther lack of in-depth information about how they handle things... The connection itself is direct and once it's established no traffic flows through our servers. - that statement (from http://www.hamachi.cc/howitworks) sounds very problematic to me - I can't see how this could work when both sides are behind NAT.

What's the Best? / Re: Anti-Virus Package

NOD32 here at the moment, seems very nice. Used to use kaspersky, but it's a bit higher on resources as far as I can tell, and it's NTFS streams methods of making things quicker doesn't go along well with sysinternals' rootkit detector. I've licensed BitDefender for the museum I do computer stuff for, and it seems very good as well... except that it's not stable on win9x.

fSekrit / Re: Compared with Steganos Locknote
« Last post by f0dder on March 01, 2006, 12:31 PM »
The two programs overlap a bit in functionality, but fSekrit is indeed smaller - and it works on Win9x, which Locknote doesn't. Also, there's some GUI differences, but that's a matter of personal taste... :)

No performance issues at all... none.

Well, things will be a few nano/microseconds slower because a reparse point is used - but in practice, you're right :P

Actually moving apps to another path is a major chore. Automated tools might work (if their app database is large enough...), but fixing all the right references can be a major pain for some apps.

Gogo, db90h's wonderful tool :P

Ability to convert txt-files by dragging and dropping into program
Planned for an upcoming version :)

Unicode (UTF-8) support would be nice, but let the user have the option to download a version without unicode with smaller filesize.
This really shouldn't add much size, since there's (afaik) some usable API calls for this. If my guesstimates are correct, utf-8 support should add less than a kilobyte to the final exe size.

I haven't had much time for programming, unfortunately - most of my time has been spent shopping, cooking, cleaning, drilling holes in the walls etc. Currently visiting my mum + brothers to fix some stuff, but I hope I can get some internet connectivity at home sometime next month or so...

Developer's Corner / Re: Dina Programming Font

Great site.

If the Dina programming font has one disadvantage, then this that it is a bitmap font in FON format. So i can't use it with Linux/KDE.
I believe somebody did a linux conversion of the font, mouser probably knows

f0dder, can't you get online at the local library or internet cafe?
Probably - but that's not very much fun. Prying eyes, time restrictions, etc. Hopefully I've got a job, gotta call back tomorrow; if so, I'll be back online regularly from March :)

Developer's Corner / Re: Best Programming Music
« Last post by f0dder on February 11, 2006, 12:48 PM »
Depends on my mood... NIN, Rammstein, Vader, Koxbox, Infected Mushroom, Dimmu Borgir, Septic Flesh. Sometimes some 'softer' stuff like ERA, PJ Harvey, Portishead, Morcheeba etc. Depends on what kind of coding I do, too - some music is better for debugging, other for coding. Meshuggah has been very good when I have a deadline to make and need some creativity :)

I don't really know what to put at the top of the list - food or internet. My girlfriend says food though, and I want to have long discussion with her about that topic, so... :)

Even if I can't afford net for a while, I'll try to pop by every now and then; my mum's place is some 40 minutes away by train, and has internet ;)

Hep!

I've just moved to another city; my girlfriend and I managed to find a nice flat, and decided it was time to move in together. About time, very nice, etc.

Unfortunately, this means no internet access for a while - not until we've found some jobs so we can afford it.

I'll hopefully be back in a month or so.

Developer's Corner / Re: indent wars..
« Last post by f0dder on February 11, 2006, 10:15 AM »
A sample of my code style...

extern std::string GetUserName();

const unsigned IterationCount = 1024;

void MyFunction()
{
unsigned myVariable = 42;

// 4-space tab - space indentation is evil.
// Multi-statement loops and if sentences use blocks
for(unsigned i=0; i<IterationCount; i++)
{
TweakSystem(i*2);
PrintOut(i);
}

// Single-statement loop and if sentences don't use blocks
if(GetUserName() == "f0dder")
GiveRootPrivileges();
}

Also, for classes, I never define functions inline in the class block - for member functions that are supposed to be inline, I do define them in the header, but below the class.

WHOA! :O

Drive thrashing... well, sane defrag apps will try reading/writing at longish intervals before moving, and then there's the OS'es "elevator sort" algorithm + Native Command Queuing on SATA/SCSI drives to eliminate thrashing a bit.

If you don't defragment, you'll get daily thrashing, instead of "just" a (somewhat massive, yes) amount of thrashing while the defrag is done.

As for heat generation issues, you should always have a 80 or 120mm fan in front of your harddrives. In normal system use, it means a temperature difference of ~20C around here (Denmark... Scandinavia... aka cold).
8898
Steve Gibson says defragmenting isn't necessary... that should be enough proof that it's good to defragment ;)
