Screenshot Captor / Re: The Great Screenshot Captor Ruler Debate Thread
« Last post by mouser on September 08, 2013, 05:35 PM »
Sorry about that out-of-resources error, that seems to be something the rulers are causing -- i'm working on it.

Regarding usefulness of ruler, i still dont quite see it.. It seems if you want precise sizing, the text showing you the exact size of your selection at the bottom seems more useful.

Maybe what would really be useful would be an optional top pabel where the horizontal ruler would normally be, showing in large font the position of the cursor, the exact size of selection (in pixels and inches), and the exact size of the current object being manipulated.  Maybe even an option to overlay a grid with a custom origin and grid size?

Good points.

In CHS the title field is actually configurable by the user.  As you might have gotten used to by now, i have referred to it somewhat inconsistently.  In the options on the Clipboard tab it the "Clip Naming Template".  I should change that to Clip TITLE template.

As for grabbing the web page title, I guess in CHS this is captured as the Window Title.

Very sweet of you to start this topic, even if you end up being the only poster :)

ps.

Please remember as always that Screenshot Captor is not Photoshop/TheGimp/PaintShopPro/RealPaint/AdobeIllustrator (!)

So if you want to do serious graphical EDITING and adding of fancy text and graphics, use a real graphic editor (and by all means create a tool entry for your editor of choice within Screenshot Captor).

New beta 4.6.3 uploaded.  Most notable improvement is to the caption tool (last button on toolbar); you can now use it to modify a previously added caption.

I note that you could already edit the caption text visually (double click in the caption object), BUT you couldn't easily resize the caption box size.

Now by pressing the caption toolbar button you can edit the text and have it automatically resized/recreated for you.

You'll also find a Remove Caption item in the Object menu.

While I still think the rulers seem pretty useless, i'm open to ideas for either how to make them useful, or some alternative thing that might be more useful.

For example, while the current selection size is shown on the bottom statusbar, i'm open to the idea of an optional larger panel above the image (where the top horizontal ruler would show) that has in larger font information about current cursor location and selection size in pixels and inches/cm.

Maybe if i could hear some use cases for using a ruler..

By the way the latest beta i just uploaded also has a substantial improvement in the Caption tool, in that it will let you EDIT the current caption text and then REPLACE any existing caption with the new one.  That will save you from having to manually delete the memo object and then crop your image.  You can also simply remove an existing caption from the Object menu now.

It's measuring pixels yes.
And yeah i'm inclined to not include this ruler thing -- certainly it wouldn't be enabled by default; like i said i just cannot understand how it would be useful.

You are quite right that the caption dialog should allow multiple lines, i will fix.

Screenshot Captor / The Great Screenshot Captor Ruler Debate Thread
« Last post by mouser on September 08, 2013, 01:28 PM »
We have been debating the value of adding some sort of ruler functionality to Screenshot Captor in a few threads.

There are people who believe rulers would be very useful, and there are others, like me, who don't yet understand the usefulness of them.

I'm hoping we can consolidate the discussion into this thread, and focus on what actual tasks are being done that might benefit from some kind of ruler functionality, and then decide what kind of optional tool i can add to SC that would best help people perform these tasks.

This might mean adding rulers (fixed or floating?) or adding some kind of special panel with extra information, or a customizable grid, etc.

Or it may simply mean finding an external ruler/measuring tool and creating a helpful .sctool entry for it to make it super easy for people to use from within Screenshot Captor.

I think the first step is for people who want "rulers" to help me understand what kind of rulers they think would be useful and what kinds of tasks they would use them for inside SC; and let's try to think outside the box and figure out if a ruler is what is really needed or if something else might help even more with these tasks..

Try this:
Start SC as you normally do.  If you normally launch it automatically at boot time, turn that off while we experiment.
Then change an option, and exit SC. Restart it.  Is your change in place?

first step is to make sure the settings are saved if you manually start and exit, without worrying about rebooting.

can you also make sure you don't have multiple versions of SC installed in different locations.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Poor man's 'gallery view' in Screenshot Capture
« Last post by mouser on September 08, 2013, 10:21 AM »
So I've thought about this a bit more, some random thoughts:

  • If I do it, i'd do it as a separate window, not shown within the main SC window.
  • I might even do it as a standalone application that just knows how to tell SC to open an image and vice versa.
  • Having said that, it's inconceivable that there aren't already good freeware image browser/searchers that are excellent and which people could use already with Screenshot Captor; it would be easy to configure this as a tool within SC.
  • So, I guess i'm saying that with a little bit of work, one can already configure a free image gallery/browser/search tool to use with SC.  In fact I encourage people to find some good ones and we can make .sctool files for them to share make it trivial to use with SC.
  • Having said that, there may still be some value in reinventing the wheel and creating a new minimalist image browser/search tool that comes bundled with SC, for convenience, and because it's not a hugely complicated task.

I welcome thoughts on existing free image browsers/searchers, and thoughts on whether it would be worth creating a new one.

As Cranioscopical said, a primary feature of this tool should be the ability to quickly see the recursive contents of folders and quickly search and filter, with rapidly adjustable thumbnail sizes and sort by different properties.  Another nice feature i was thinking might be nice would be the ability to specify a set of folders and have it show all thumbnails in all of those folders.  Any other features that would be useful for screenshot image browsing tool?

It is somewhat odd that it's not in the profile sidebar..
But 4wd has it right, the top place where it says "You have # messages" is the link to click on to get to your message area.

2. How do I tell the program not to automatically reduce a process? It slows down my video maker program.

Run the program in question. Then open up the configuration, find the program on the list of running processes, and in the far right hand column labeled "Explicit Rule" choose "Ignore".

OR if you don't want to run the program, just go to the main Configuration tab, right clck in the bottom grid and say Add Rule, then add the executable filename and set it to "Ignore".

There has to be something unusual about your setup that is causing this to happen.
Are you running SC portably or did you use the installer?  Have you edited your ConfigDir.ini file?

Try this:
Start SC as you normally do.  If you normally launch it automatically at boot time, turn that off while we experiment.
Then change an option, and exit SC. Restart it.  Is your change in place?

Gizmo's Freeware / Tech Support Alert

No site does as good a job of helping you choose a freeware tool for a specific task than Gizmo's Freeware (otherwise known by us old-timers as Tech Support Alert).

The site is simply unrivaled in terms of recommendations for freeware, and if you ever find yourself asking what the best free windows utility is for a given task, it's *the* site to visit.

In each well-organized category, top alternatives are reviewed, rated, and ranked, and then discussed by all -- and reviews are frequently revisited and updated, which is a rarity.

In addition, Gizmo Richards himself has also long been a friend to freeware authors, helping to shine the light on new freeware tools, and a friend to us from the early days, helping to tell people about DonationCoder and our software -- and I am extremely honored to have had some of my tools recommended on the site.

I can't think of a better site to receive the first entry in our list of our Favorite Websites.

Good suggestions.  As far as locating the white cursor/arrow button, yeah it's tricky to find, but newbies can also click that big Close button in that text area too, which is what i suspect will be more common.

Again, i don't think this is going to be super useful to people who already know how to use the program, but hopefully a new user who feels stuck and unsure of how to get out of object editing mode will eventually see that text and derive some solace from it.

Living Room / Re: printer to repair or not repair
« Last post by mouser on September 07, 2013, 05:39 PM »
When calculating repair vs buy new, you also have to factor in the fact that these kinds of repairs frequently are unsuccessful, or only fix it briefly, and the costs are very difficult to predict.

Frequently with electronics, buying a new item would be cheaper than even the bare minimum repair costs assuming the repair is guaranteed to be 100% perfect success.  That's the easy call.

More often than not though, you have to make a judgement call about the likely repair cost, hassle and downtime of the repair, and how long it's likely to last after repair.

But when I factor those things in, and consider my experience with repairs not lasting, i almost never come out on the side of repairing.

The only exceptions to this rule is when I can do the repair myself -- in that case i'll gladly spend way too many hours and way too much on parts, just on the principle of the matter.

my general view of electronics is when they pass the warranty period, repairing is rarely worth it.
