Living Room / Which part of the Internets crack you up?
« Last post by nosh on August 14, 2008, 02:42 PM »
I'm a huge fan of The Superficial (slightly NSFW), the guy who writes for it may come across as misogynistic but he has an undeniably wicked sense of humor.

Another of my favorites is Glasbergen, I haven't been able to find any (full) feeds for his stuff so I just read him (The Better Half) in the newspapers.

Which are some of your favorite funny places on the Intertubes? (Youtube doesn't count!  ;) )

Also, if you've got the time and inclination, which is the funniest DC thread, in your opinion?  ;D

WinWaitClose by itself bombs badly but, a

WinWait, desktop38.ico
WinClose, desktop38.ico
WinWaitClose, desktop38.ico

combination seems to do the trick.  Thanks for helping me out.

Yes, I have been using AHK spy. It's doesn't seem like a matter of identifying the window though - everything works as intended if I use a Sleep command. I generally use spy but some windows keep being assigned different class names on each run so I have to use the title in those cases. I'll give the alternative spy app a try though, thanks for the link.

Regarding IfWinExist: I need the first window to close before the subsequent commands are executed or they are performed on the first window itself, despite my using WinActivate to activate the intended target window. Making the WinClose conditional should just make the program ignore the command altogether, having the same effect. I don't suppose there's a way to direct a Send command to a specific window only, rather than whichever window is active?

; Inserting a Sleep at this point makes the code run as intended
WinClose, desktop38.ico
WinActivate, CompuPic Pro - USER
Send {Alt}oo{Enter}

AutoHotkey / AHK - Wait functions don't really wait
« Last post by nosh on August 13, 2008, 01:07 AM »
I've never been able to make functions like WinWait, WinWaitActive, WinWaitNotActive really work for me. AHK just doesn't seem to wait for the window - it doesn't matter whether I use the ahk_class or title to identify the window... I don't set any seconds timeout either... AHK zips right past the wait fns and executes the following commands anyway. I've been dealing with this using Sleep calls which is a bit of a dirty hack. Is there any way to make the wait fns actually wait?

Usage example:
WinClose, desktop38.ico
WinWaitNotActive, desktop38.ico

(desktop38.ico is a valid window title)

Once you find out all the little extra stuff you couldn't do in XP that you CAN do in Vista, you won't go back.

Could you elaborate on this, Brandon? I tend to be a bit close-minded sometimes but from what little I know about Vista there seems to be nothing that XP (+ the right 3rd party utility) can't do that Vista can. I know there are some serious core architecture changes + DX10 support but what can Vista (exclusively) do that'll affect my day to day use?

I've put in so much time and effort into my current XP setup (been working on it for years, but keeping it clutter-free thanks to Drive "SaveGame" Imaging), I can't bear the thought of moving to anything else. It'd take me months to just get up to par, NTM incompatibilities, etc that are a certainty while migrating OSs. I've even lost the urge to upgrade hardware coz everything just _works_.

I prefer YesScript, it's a NoScript spinoff that allows JS globally but lets you blacklist invidual sites. I use it more as a performance enhancer coz I've noticed some JavaScript-heavy sites really bog FF down.

It would have to be Autohotkey for me, most apps have a certain utility - they are what they are - AHK keeps getting better (doing more) with time. It has let me hack my way through several annoyances I've tolerated for a long time, do more with old programs & basically make the PC more fun to use... cheesy, but true!  :)

Will do, thanks again.

PS: I haven't read the online instructions too carefully but it would be a good idea to put these pixel limits in them, if you haven't already done so.

The following code pasted to your hosts file should stop Adsense. The Customize Google extension claims to remove both Adsense and Click Tracking. I use both (so wouldn't know if one isn't really working) and haven't seen any Adsense for months.

I noticed you used a 96 dpi scan. For best results I recommend you use a 300 dpi scanned in image. In other words, the width should be at least 2000 pixels and the height at least 3000 pixels.

I had scanned @600 dpi (my default setting) and the end result was way too huge so I resized it (over-wrote the file) to something that seemed more fitting for upload, which was a bit below the minimum requirement so I had to resize it again to 1000px or whatever the minimum was.  :-[

Good to know you've updated the algorithm , I got around the problem by shifting the z up a notch in a paint application.

Tried it yesterday. Liked the speed (the Digg effect hadn't kicked in yet and their servers were faring fine), didn't much care for the column layout but did like the fact that they had thumbnails within hits. Got decent hits for the first few searches and then "0 hits" for something that did get hits on Google. *relief* Ctrl+W

That's one HUGE list!  :'(

I'm quite content with WinOrganizer which is a calendar/ to-do/password vault/address book & more, in addition to being a notes taking app. It may not be as comprehensive as some other apps but you don't need to spend hours learning how to use it either. And though I have several copies of my data backed up all over the place, it's still nice to know that I've never lost a single bit of information to a crash in the 2+ years (IIRC) of using it daily.

There was a post just a few days back on RirianProject (an excellent health blog, BTW) about working out the lower back.

I've noticed that I tend to catch aches, strains and the like only when I've neglected working out for a considerable stretch of time.

Too many people playing! (*me-too mentality kicks in*)

Sorry about the lighting, putting on the room lights or using the flash was resulting in some serious glare crapification & it's too overcast outside (love it!) to get decent natural lighting.

Cheats used: I try and keep things organized so the desktop really is that clear at most times, I just removed a couple of seriously embarrassing books (Access '97, DOS 6.22  ;D) from the shelf, stuff long overdue - thank you, DC... inspirational as usual.  :)

Points of interest: There's a coffee mug in there somewhere that betrays my (caffeine) addiction, Goomba guarding my DVD spools.

I'd love to show people my 'high on grass' calendar but it's out of view.  :P

+1 for Split Browser - I've had it installed for a while now. It's surprisingly easy to use too.

lol@ "cleaned by deletion" - why can't the monkeys just call it deleted?

I personally feel it's a really bad/dangerous choice to let an AV whack off files on its own without prompting the user for action, you never know what'll scare it next.

Thanks erwind,

It worked well but the 'z' was a bit messed up. Just letting you know since the service is in beta.
As you can see from the template, it probably happened coz the 'z' came a bit too close to the border, though it didn't cross it.

The single instance thing applies across versions. I had both installed before I got rid of FF2.
42 extensions ported now to FF3, it has crashed a couple of times (possibly an extension incompatibility) but when you consider the night & day difference in performance, upgrading is a complete no-brainer. You can create an exclusive profile for FF3 to avoid complications.

General Software Discussion / Re: Firefox - Searching cached content
« Last post by nosh on July 02, 2008, 10:14 AM »
Thanks guys. Neither of these let me search through the actual page content though. :( I'm looking to find pages based on text content coz that's what I tend to remember. Eg: I may have visited 40 DC pages but if I type in "add-on for everything" I would like this one to show up.

Guess I'm going to have to bite the bullet and go in for a desktop search app. Trying out Copernic at the moment as they seem to have a newer version, it's been indexing my drives for the past couple of hours and hasn't frozen the PC so far, so maybe it's not so bad. ;) Thanks again for replying.

General Software Discussion / Firefox - Searching cached content
« Last post by nosh on July 02, 2008, 04:52 AM »
Is there any way (besides using desktop search apps) to search the Firefox cache based on content?

Thumbstrips provides a fantastic interface for this (shows the visited site thumbnails and limits the ones shown in real-time as I type in the search box) but it's not really meant for this and only works for the current browsing session.

I don't expect anything that intuitive, any in-browser solution to search the cache would be fine. Searching on URL+Title just isn't good enough.
