Living Room / Re: Someone needs to expand our WikiPedia article
« Last post by tomos on March 02, 2009, 09:13 AM »
Thing is if you're involved with the organisation isn't it bad practice to edit your own articles?

I think they dont actually mind but they are a bit obsessive about giving third party references as sources of your info (I guess it's the only way they can "believe" info - but it is a bit of a messy situation at same time).
IIRC the article abut SQLNotes got removed because of a lack there.

I'm sure Donationcoder and events like NANY here are well linked to from other sites

General Software Discussion / Re: Converting Spreadsheet to Table in forum
« Last post by tomos on March 01, 2009, 11:10 AM »
hi Crono :)

I'm trying to update that disc catalogue list, I've changed computers so I've freshly installed sed
I saved your code (below) as  Convert.bat
I'm attempting - unsuccessfully so far - to convert a csv file via drag-drop (I removed spaces from csv file name - that was initially a problem last time)
Separater is comma

Sounds like your SED is not found. To make sure, open a command prompt ([Windows]+[R] -> cmd). Type "sed" - if you got something like "command not found"

you have 2 options:

1) Change the path in your Batchfile to "C:/Program Files/YOUR_PATH_TO_SED/sed.exe"
or
2) Add SED to your path, so it is available everywhere. How to: http://www.computerh.../issues/ch000549.htm

after this, it should work correctly.

I've tried option two above without success (I still get "'sed' is not recognised" when I try via command line)
In Option #1 you say "Change the path.."
eh ... what path (please remember I'm no coder nor even a power(ful) user for that matter ;) )
@echo off
set infile=%1%
sed -e "s/;/\[\/td\]\[td\]/g" "%infile%" > temp1.txt
sed -e "s/$/\[\/td\]\[\/tr]/g" temp1.txt > temp2.txt
sed -e "s/^/\[tr\]\[td\]/g" temp2.txt > temp1.txt
echo
> table.txt
type temp1.txt >> table.txt
echo
>>  table.txt
del temp1.txt
del temp2.txt

I've restarted and double checked/tried everything again but no luck

The only thing that does happen is if I right click Convert.bat and click open, it then creates a table.txt file with just

as content

EDIT/ I tried replacing %1% in the batch file with the sed.exe path but that didnt work either
FORGOT TO SAY:
Windows XP SP2 up-to-date

EDIT2/ the sed file I downloaded was sed-4.1.5-setup.exe (the "Complete package, except sources") from
http://gnuwin32.sour...net/packages/sed.htm

Living Room / Re: Another Silly Meme: Put your music player on shuffle!
« Last post by tomos on February 27, 2009, 05:59 PM »
I have a relatively small music folder so far .. (I'm not even a big fan of Bob Dylan except for that live in Royal Albert Hall album but he keeps cropping up here) so let's hit the Trout!!

IF SOMEONE SAYS "IS THIS OKAY" YOU SAY?
Listen Listen  (Sandy Denny)

WHAT WOULD BEST DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONALITY?
Be Here Now (Ray La Montagne)
okay

WHAT DO YOU LIKE IN A GUY/GIRL?
Girl of the North Country (Bob Dylan)

WHAT IS YOUR MOTTO?
House Where Nobody Lives (Tom Waits)
ouch

WHAT DO YOUR FRIENDS THINK OF YOU?
Like a Rolling Stone (Bob Dylan)

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT VERY OFTEN?
Natty Rebel (U-Roy)
Bit of a rebel :-\ or something (?)

WHAT IS 2+2?
It takes a lot to laugh (Bob Dylan)

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF THE PERSON YOU LIKE? [the one I like a lot?]
The Ground Beneath her Feet (U2)

WHAT IS YOUR LIFE STORY?
Riverside (Roger McGuinn)
"I'm going to lay down my sword & shield, down by the riverside"

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO BE WHEN YOU GROW UP?
I am a Man of Constant Sorrow (Bob Dylan)
another "ouch"

WHAT DO YOUR PARENTS THINK OF YOU?
Nude (Radiohead)
WTF!!

WHAT WILL YOU DANCE TO AT YOUR WEDDING?
I have to get married again ?
once enough for the moment - we had a Klezmer band

WHAT WILL THEY PLAY AT YOUR FUNERAL?
Deportee (Bob Dylan, Joan Baez)

WHAT IS YOUR HOBBY/INTEREST?
Let it be Me (Ray La Montagne)
(self-centred?)

WHAT IS YOUR BIGGEST SECRET?
You've got My Number (The Undertones) :)

WHAT DO YOU THINK OF YOUR FRIENDS?
Leopard Skin PillBox Hat (Bob Dylan)

WHAT'S THE WORST THING THAT COULD HAPPEN?
Raggle Taggle Gipsy (Planxty)
The missis runs off with a gipsy...

HOW WILL YOU DIE?
really wierd I had a couple of Father Ted videos (from youtube) in the music folder - I got:
Father Jack is the Undead
I believe he "dies" from drinking some sort of toilet cleaner (eh, he has a drink problem) - BUT - he comes back to life... (so ther's hope for me?? lol)

WHAT IS THE ONE THING YOU REGRET?
One Chord Complaint (Edith Frost)
(First time I've heard it - must listen to the lyrics ..)

WHAT MAKES YOU LAUGH?
Lessons Learned (Ray La Montagne)

WHAT MAKES YOU CRY?
Mama Where you At (Leo Soileau)

WILL YOU EVER GET MARRIED?
You are the Best Thing (Ray La Montagne)

WHAT SCARES YOU THE MOST?
Romance in Durango (Bob Dylan)
"Was it me that shot him down in the cantina
Was it my hand that held the gun ?
Come let us fly my Magdalena
The dogs are barking and what's done is done."

IF YOU COULD GO BACK IN TIME, WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE?
Cars and Parties (Edith Frost)
why not ?

I took the liberty of leaving out a couple - some made sense to me but wouldnt to others - some were even too close to the bone and some just didnt make any sense at all - but I'm surprised how many "fit" over mine and the other two posts

http://www.superflexible.com/history.htm for version history

cant say about Amazon S3 (I use it but using Jungle Disk to back up my SFFS backups - not the most efficient but one advantage is it's easier for someone non-technical like me to check if it working properly)

40% discount on SoftCat until the end of March (thanks to dc member MrZebulon)

that works out @ just under $18 or less than €16
find it in the forum (only accessible to supporting members) under:
Special User Sections > Shareware Discounts for Members > Shareware Discount Codes Here

from http://www.fnprg.com...softcat/softcat.html
SoftCAT is a powerful database program designed to help you organize your software inventory.

I see Jim is using it and Tinjaw recommends it
... I am doing fine with SoftCAT Plus for my installed software catalog/database ...

JGPaiva's GridMove and Ahk Tools / Re: GridMove: Grids Here
« Last post by tomos on February 27, 2009, 04:01 AM »
Heard about GridMove a couple of days ago, and downloaded it yesterday.   I've been playing with it since then, and have to say that it is an incredibly useful little utility.  Spent most of the night learning how to make grids so I could get one that works exactly the way I wanted.   Here is what I came up with, in case anyone else is interested...

that looks impressive - thanks!

[EDIT] I see the post was removed?? LOL - I cant type at the bottom cause of the شكرا[/EDIT]

شكرا

from http://en.wiktionary...#1603;را
Etymology:
Adverbial accusative of شكر (šukr), thankfulness, from the primitive root شكر (šákara), to thank, to be grateful. Compare Hebrew שכר.

now I wonder how you pronounce it :) (like "šukr" probably, however that goes)
PS it's bizarre if you start typing in arabic (presumably cause it reads right to left) - keys start working in totally unexpected ways - try backspace, del, or return on this:
شكرا

Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Adding ALL CAPS to quick modification menu
« Last post by tomos on February 25, 2009, 05:54 PM »
if you open up the CHS window, then click the "Modify Format/Case" button at top of the clip panel, that will bring you to the formatting dialog.  Then choose the UPPERCASE text formatting and nothing else, then save the preset with a useful name (From preset menu).  After that the new preset formatting operation will appear on your quick pop up menu under "Formatting Presets".

works a treat - would be logical to have this under options as well, thanks!

is it whachamacallit :-\ (not the full shilling so to speak) limited in some way ?

can anyone tell me what average user would double-clip their clippings so that they have one clipping on a fallback software they regularly use and one on Surfulator just to test how well it works for them?
?
I may know the answer but cant figure out the question ..(mind you I dont have the most recent version..)

I, on the other hand, like you(!) sometimes dont read posts so closely ;) (tough being imperfect isnt it :D)

I see IndieVolume gets (relatively) poor reviews up to September of last year in the discount thread here (I think only supporting members can access those threads) but I havent heard of anything else

DC Website Help and Extras / Re: Fundraiser discussion.. again.. need help with ideas
« Last post by tomos on February 24, 2009, 03:31 PM »
How about Fundraiser USB drivers?

Not a bad idea - but should definitely be done as prizes! As stated above, I think that whatever ideas we come up with/agree to should have a truly minimal impact on DC's accounts!

on the other hand it might be a good idea to have a "product line" that you could offer for sale year round
e.g.

tshirts ? (I know you have those expensive hoodies as prizes but you could produce a more basic line for the plebs) cause you could sell it year round it's not particularly "fundraiser-drive" material but worth thinking about, especially with such a good designer/illustrator as nudone on board!  (do you have a link again to those hoodies?)

Posters too ? (I'd like one ;))

General Software Discussion / Re: What's your mouse of choice?
« Last post by tomos on February 22, 2009, 06:10 AM »
That's very different than what I have.

Mine never click-clicks. It can't click-click. It has no detents to do that click-clicking with.

There is no 2 modes. There is only no click-click.
Hmm...ok.  Then I need to make a correction.  There is no physical click-click, but the mouse will behave like a normal clicky mouse when it is in that mode.  So the two modes are controlled entirely by the software, and physically the wheel is always in free-spin mode.

App isnt using a logitech mouse lol (i.e. she's saying how the make/model she has is different)

PS hi to bgd77's favorite mouse :)

General Software Discussion / Re: What's your mouse of choice?
« Last post by tomos on February 21, 2009, 10:08 AM »
Er... what's a free-wheel?

When you scroll the wheel on your mouse, most have little "bumps" that "click" as you scroll.

Free-wheel (I prefer the term smooth-wheel) doesn't have that. It's smooth, quiet, and you have greater control. But it's one of those things that you either love or hate, and if you love it, it's hard to find a mouse with it.

sounds nice
if you spin it does it keep going - is there that little resistance?

Razer Lachesis though truth be told I prefer trackballs , however getting a full featured multibutton left handed/ambidextrous track is almost impossible. nowadays

trying to get left handed anything (mouse-wise) seems pretty challenging to me :(
thanks for that Razer tip
