Living Room / Re: Making a dream PC for cheap (as possible) - help anyone?
« Last post by Deozaan on February 08, 2008, 07:46 PM »
So what's the real story behind ATI vs nVidia? I see you guys talking about the 8800 GT, which is nVidia, but I've always gotten ATI myself. Not for any particular reason, other than perhaps the price.

I've been kind of stingy in the past when it comes to prices, but these days I would consider spending $100-$200 on a video card. I'm more concerned about value than price.

256MB DDR3 I would assume - faster is (almost) always better, but that depends on if you need to load a little bit of things onto the GPU fast, or a lot at a slower rate.

Yeah but DDR3 would need to be twice as fast as DDR2 to make up for having only half the MB. At least that's my logic to it.

When it comes to video card ram, what's the better choice between 512MB DDR2 or 256MB DDR3?

I want this:

SLI Motherboard, Core 2 Quad 2.4Ghz, 4GB PC6400 DDR2 Ram (2x2GB) for $400

Of course, then I'd also need to buy:

Hard Drive: + ~$100
Video Card: + ~$100-$200
Case: + ~$100
Power Supply: + ~$60-$80

And add shipping and the thing would cost nearly $900 and still have no monitor, keyboard, or mouse.

Is mouser running Vista x64?  :o :o :o :o :tellme:

EDIT: Okay, I'm not very observant. It says right there Windows XP 64bit SP2.

Deozaan: since you're more informed about it, could you make a post here on DC about it? :)

I don't know that much about GameTap. I just downloaded it when I heard it was offering Psychonauts for free, since I never got a chance to play it on PS2. Sadly, I haven't even played Psychonauts yet even though I downloaded it from GameTap some months ago.

I'm not fond of the idea of installing a game download service that has to be installed and running to play my PC games. I'd rather just buy the game. I haven't yet bought into the idea of a subscription format for movies or games as I'm very stingy when it comes to spending money.

It's hypnotically mindless. It's fun, but too easy and now I'm growing bored. The gun you'd think would be the best in the game (costs the most to buy) is actually quite a downgrade from the FN Scar. The FN scar does more damage and reloads in a split second, so the significantly lower magazine capacity is hardly noticeable as it only requires the occasional "unclick, reclick" of the mouse button.

After you get the FN Scar (which shouldn't be hard if you keep your expenses to a minimal) then you're basically invincible. The only "skill" involved at that point is making sure you have the dexterity to wave your cursor back and forth as you literally mow them down.

I give it a  for the short term, but  in the long term.

I hate to say this, because I think if it was this way I would totally hate the game, but the unlimited ammo makes it way too easy. If ammo management were a part of the game then it might add a little more reason to have all those weapons, etc.

I'm very thin, and don't engage in any "risky" behavior (i.e. tobacco or alcohol use, etc.) and I'm definitely not healthy. It's a weird kind of stigma--people think that if you're not fat you must be "in shape" when the truth is that I get winded pretty easily too doing exercise.

there is just no way taking notes with a pen on a tablet is going to be used over taking notes by typing on a keyboard, unless all he does is draw diagrams.

Or unless he writes faster than he types. Which is sadly still quite common these days.

I used to keep a lot of e-mail but also delete a lot. Then I got Gmail. Now I archive everything except spam and the occasional stupid chain e-mail that comes my way.

I have two Gmail accounts now, but the one I've had the longest (back when invites were still rare) is only at 19% storage capacity. The one I use most often these days is only at 1% of capacity.

My inbox is tidy because I only keep a few in the inbox, but nearly everything else goes to the archive.

EDIT: As to why? Um... Not really sure. Most of it I could do without, but I have to tell you it has been very helpful when a year and a half later I vaguely remember an e-mail conversation I had with someone about some topic (such as coding) that I'm suddenly very interested in remembering. A quick Gmail search or two and I've found it. It's very, very useful when you need it.

General Software Discussion / Re: Money saving budgeting options
« Last post by Deozaan on January 30, 2008, 02:25 PM »
The best way to increase savings is to save early and think long term! I opened a new savings account at my bank last week and the banker showed me a sheet, where, starting at age 20 (kinda late for most of us here) if you save $1,000 a year (less than $100 each month) for 10 years and then never contribute another penny, you'd have more than $460,000 on a 10% interest rate by the time you're 65. Whereas if you start when you're 31 and invest $1,000 every year until you're 65, you have only about $350,000.

In other words, your total investment is $10,000 in the first example, but your total investment is $34,000 in the second example and you make about $100,000 less!

My wife left this open on my computer yesterday: How to Make a Million. It tells you how much you need to save each month at certain ages to have a million when you're 65.

I also recommend reading The Total Money Makeover by David Ramsey. He'll get you started on steps to take to come into big savings.

Looks like Qix was ported to all kinds of places. DOS, NES, Gameboy, Amiga, etc.

The one I was thinking of was called Cacoma Knight in Bizyland for SNES

Jezzbell was a lot better on the PC, not some poor browser-embedded remake.

I think I remember that game you're talking about papoj1. I played it on my grandma's computer or on the NES or something when I was young. But I can't remember the name either. I'll check out those variants and see if I find it.

I agree with mouser on starting from scratch. But I've never used any kind of imaging software so formatting is all I know.

I don't have much more to add other than to second what mouser said.
