No BlacX ever on the market.  But Sharkoon brand comes out with USB 3.0 where it's the BlacX with a differently shaped eject button.  The unit must be licensed from Thermaltake.

I'm not sure Thermaltake originated the design, though. A quick search on eBay results in a handful of different vendors all with very similar designs.

Seems to be the same thing with NEC, at least in the US. I haven't found any way to purchase a single NEC USB 3.0 superspeed card.  But there is Bytecc and SIIG.

Of that I have no doubt. NEC doesn't make their own cards, but it wouldn't surprise me if the SIIG turned out to be a rebadge of the Bytecc, though.

NEC chips are the USB 3.0 chipset on my Gigabyte mobo, btw. I found it odd I couldn't find any drivers on NEC's web site. I had to download them from Gigabyte's site.

They don't greenlight movies where the script calls for human evil to finally, absolutely, and conclusively win.

Re: The Forgotten. I had 'forgotten' (no pun intended) that when I watched the movie it was the version with the alternate ending.

All right...I'll try again. A movie where human evil finally, absolutely, conclusively wins...hmm....

The Usual Suspects.

Spoiler
Evil gets away not only scot-free, but in spectacular fashion that makes utter fools of the good guys.

I was thinking of migrating to Windows 7 64-bit, but I shall defer it - I have heard of a few too many instances like this, where the thing is not yet supported by this or that application.

This is a software developer problem rather than a Windows problem, IMHO. 64-bit versions of Windows have been around since Windows XP x64. It's time to get the lead out and support what is new and modern.

This is the only program so far I have run into this problem with & quite frankly, it's worth giving up the deskband feature of Networx in order to enjoy all the benefits that a 64-bit version of Windows will bring me (enforced driver signing, increased security, access to RAM greater than 4 GB, etc.).

I can't see myself going back to Windows x86. IMHO, x64 is the way forward.

SIIG is a good company to buy from *IF* you are buying something that will never, ever, ever require a firmware upgrade. They rebadge another company's product, change the firmware & drivers so you can only use the ones released by SIIG, and shove it out the door.

Their driver release schedule isn't too bad, but you can just about forget any new firmware ever being released. You're almost always better off researching who SIIG is using for an OEM and buy a non-rebadged version. You'll get better support in the long run.

The one good thing about the AV & security software market is that there are plenty of options to choose from if you grow disillusioned with what you are currently using.

How does that gel with the ending of The Mist ?

I'm with you, 4wd. I just don't buy it. Otherwise The Forgotten never would have been made. At the end, IIRC, good does not win. The "Big Bad" persists and its crystal clear that good will never win.

There are lots of movies and TV shows where evil wins. I'm thankful for that, watching the good guys win in the end. Every. Single. Time. Well, it gets old.

Unhappiness!! Just installed Networx since moving to Windows 7 x64 and the deskband feature is only compatible with 32-bit versions of Windows. :(

Site/Forum Features / Re: Should we add tags to forum?
« Last post by Innuendo on June 26, 2010, 06:18 PM »
While superboyac and daddydave make excellent points the question in my mind is while the benefit of adding tags may at times be minimal what is the downide to adding them? I can't seem to think of any.

Minimal gains in searching are still gains.

That's one of the reasons why all those unstoppable-psycho-serial-killer franchises (Freddie Kreuger, Jason, et al) have so many sequels. Hollywood will not allow these stories to end with evil triumphant.

Huh.

So....all these years Hollywood has been pushing out drek sequels in order to deliver an uplifting message that good will eventually prevail.

Here I thought it was just a money grab.

Living Room / Re: Comcast wins "Worst Company In America" Award for 2010

I'm an Insight customer and a couple years ago some convuluted deal that Comcast & Insight had been collaborating reached its end date and a lot of markets that were branded Insight converted over to Comcast branded markets.

Since Insight's been nothing but great for me I was very worried when the possibility came up that I might soon be a Comcast customer. I've never experienced Comcast, but I'd read enough stories on the internet to know I didn't want to lose my awesome Insight experience.

How close of a call was it? When all the dust settled every market in my state but two were converted to Comcast. Thankfully, I lived in one of the two cities where Insight decided to maintain a presence.

FireFox has different profiles? i didn't know that. interesting.

Just start Firefox with the -profile command line parameter to bring up the profile manager on launch.

i think i've just about got FireFox doing what my configuration of Maxthon was doing. there are still a few things missing but i'm sure it's just a case of searching a bit more for the right extension combination.

There's more than one thread here on DC about must-have Firefox extensions. You may want to dig them up for a good read.

Anticompetitive industry bully? They've always been anti-competitive. It's just in recent years they've gotten big enough to be a bully. I long for the days when Jobs was a voice of insignificance in the tech world.

However, the speed is $20 per month, so being early retired I won't use it.

Whoever set their pricing is on crack. Their web site outlines how you will save $380 every month. Even if this "new" math were accurate, who is it will be installing all their apps *every* month?

If you don't care about keeping things in the original format or not being able to edit things another way to go is to use a screen capture program that can screenshot an entire web page like SnagIt.

I agree with wife1.0, but I also have the Don'tDressForYourSelf plugin that means that wife1.0 is not only always right but always satisfying as well (plus the history database is so large now wife1.0 probably knows me better than me).
-Perry Mowbray (June 23, 2010, 07:58 AM)

Warning! Please perform regular maintenance on the Wife 1.0 program as the history database is not guaranteed to import into Wife 2.0!  ;)

ah good. more to check out. thanks, daddydave.

After you get your extensions lined out we'll move on to must-have GreaseMonkey scripts.  ;D
869
i wonder, is there an extension manager extension. something that would allow you to quickly swap between different extensions sets.

I haven't seen one, but that doesn't mean one isn't out there. Of course, in lieu of a better solution you could set up separate profiles for different extension sets.
870
Congrats to the winners! One of the better file managers out there, IMHO.
871
nudone, no biggie. I know I typed out a huge list. Do try DownloadStatusBar as it will stop the Downloads window from popping open every time you download something. Also get Update Notifier to stop the Updates window from popping open every time you have updates to your extensions.

Extended Statusbar will add more info to your statusbar & make it actually useful.

Unless you need to mix and match multiple format input files, free video converters often do a better job.

Well, the problem is he had already tried every free converter he could get ahold of & trialed many commercial ones & the one he's settled on is the only one that could fulfill his needs.

so far, i'm impressed with Tab Mix Plus https://addons.mozil.../firefox/addon/1122/ i had been using another Tab extension but TMP seems the best so far (maybe i missed something in your list).

I use Tab Mix Plus myself, but do get Session Manager! It integrates with Tab Mix Plus & replaces TMP's session-saving functionality.

First get Nightly Tester Tools or any other extension that lets you install Firefox extensions that don't pass the version check. (For keyconfig itself, it doesn't matter, but for the functions for keyconfig extension--which is highly recommended--it does.)

The Firefox crew doesn't want people using Nightly Tester Tools anymore & wants people to move to the more powerful Addon Compatibility Tester (I think that's what it's called).

i shall have to go through you list bit by bit. looks like this is going to be this weeks labout of love.

You're welcome. That above list is the culmination of years of effort trying to find the best extension in each class & combining them all...and having them all still work.

Lots I consider essential. Others are more time-saving/effort-saving. And if you run across an extension that does something better than one in my list don't hesitate to mention to me. I'm always looking to improve my browsing arsenal.
