Even more information and now I'm getting confused:
Looking into it more, the email that arrived in my inbox from my non-gmail account is not even being filtered by the Antispam Sniper plugin.  SO now I have to try adding it and see if it still has a problem.  But all this leads me to believe it's the plugin.

OK, more information:

--it's only affecting my gmail addresses (multiple different ones).  How do I know this?  I sent an email to a non gmail address and it passed through the antispam and everything and came properly to my inbox.  But the gmail headers seem to be received differently.  I'm not exactly sure, but perhaps I changed my authentication settings recently, like changing ssl to startls, or something like that.

Depending on how motivated you are, you could either fire up WireShark to monitor the data stream or you could start simple and just use a different email client to retrieve your mail once and observe the results.

I don't know what Wireshark is, but I just downloaded and will give it a try.

I was so certain it was Bitdefender, but then why did it start 2 days earlier?  And I didn't really install anything else around that time that I can tell.

I've found out that my email client on my desktop computer is doing something like breaking up the mail message headers prior to downloading.  This is causing a problem with my spam detection, and since the antispam plugin is seeing blank headers, all my emails are going to the junk box.  I can't seem to find where the issue is.

Here's my setup:
The Bat! client
Antispam Sniper
Bitdefender Free Antivirus

Now, all this started happening 2/17.  At first I thought it was Bitdefender, because previous to that I was using MSE.  But I installed Bitdefender on 2/19, so that's not it.
Other than that, I can't tell what else I could have possibly done on that date.
Antispam Sniper is flagging everything as spam because it triggers the blank From.  But it's not ASS's fault, it is doing the right thing.  Something else is causing the headers to break up before it even gets to ASS.

I haven't changed any windows firewall settings.

Any suggestions?

So instead of just having three simple buttons which would be "intimidating", we have one button...but with a long press option.  Really?  Is that really that much easier.  end rant.

I never had a problem noticing/knowing the difference between the Send & Archive button and just the plain old vanilla Send button. They're right next to each other. It's not that hard to look before you click.

I didn't say it was "that hard".  I think the trick here is that the normal send button may have been there before, and perhaps even blue.  And it got changed, and I didn't notice.

actually...it looks like it's been there since 2009.  I must have changed a setting unintentionally recently.

Interesting. My Gmail has never done that to the best of my recollection. I wonder if there's an option I toggled so long ago that I can't remember doing it.

This whole 21st century obsession with over-simplifying everything is so extreme to me.  I hate it, but I understand it.  Lots of checkboxes and options that we geeks like is nice for us, but intimidating to others.  So now everything is way too oversimplified and want everything done with one button.  But the problem is that all this technology requires rather complex input from the end user, there's no way around it.  So instead of just having three simple buttons which would be "intimidating", we have one button...but with a long press option.  Really?  Is that really that much easier.  end rant.

OK, I have some answers now.  Not completely solved, but progress:

For the phone, the K9 client works much better with imap than with pop for gmail.  I don't know why, I remember gmail pop working ok with it previously.  But imap is working really well.  Part of it has to do with the complexity of K9's configuration of folders (1st/2nd class).

Secondly, for the desktop Bat client, I believe somehow my antispam sniper plugin got broken or something, because it was detecting a lot of messages coming in with blank header fields, so the messages were sent to spam.  in the spam folder, the full messages were there.  weird.  i don't know if this has something to do with imap and only reading header fields or something.  whatever it is, it's not fixed yet, but the problem is with antispam sniper.

The other problem has something to do with gmail.  When a message comes in, it shows up in the inbox.  When you reply to it, it disappears from the inbox, and now both messages (original + reply) show up in the "sent mail" folder.  I don't like that.  I want the original in the inbox, and just my reply in sent mail.  I'll have to check that out.

@SB- I've never mixed using POP and IMAP protocols for the same email account. I don't think it should make a difference (other than anything sent from POP won't replicate on the email server since POP is essentially a one-way street) ...but again I've never done that.

FWIW, the settings I'm using for GMail are as follows. They're pretty generic.:


ID & password same as always. (i.e. {name}@gmail.com)

Inbound server   = imap.googlemail.com | SSL/TLS | Authentication=Normal Password | Port = 993
Outbound server = smtp.googlemail.com | SSL/TLS | Authentication=Normal Password / Port = 465

I understand imap.gmail.com & smtp.gmail.com also work as the server names.

See anything different from your settings? :o

Yes, that seems like my setup too.  I'm starting to think my problem is different.  I could possibly have an issue with spam that recently has come up, or I may have fiddled with some app settings I don't remember.  It's hard to screw up the account setup because if it's wrong you don't get mail, so it's basically binary.  I'm starting to rule that out now.

gmail's imap thingie is a pain in the soft tissue. I use pop3 instead, but use the "recent" trick to make it work with multiple devices.

If you're accessing Gmail on multiple clients through POP, Gmail's 'recent mode' makes sure that all messages are made available to each client, rather than only to the first client to access new mail.

Recent mode fetches the last 30 days of mail, regardless of whether it's been sent to another POP client already.
I should probably give this a shot.  But 40 is using imap without a problem.  Now here's another thing:
I can use imap on my phone, but the Bat is not that great with imap, so should I even bother? because for sure I'm going to use pop for the Bat.  Maybe that is what's causing problems, that my phone is using imap, but the Bat is using pop.  The only reason why I say this is because all these problems seem to have cropped up once i changed K9 to use imap, whereas previously it was configured for pop.

Of the two, local data storage is probably the most important considering Google's record for abrupt terminations of product offerings and the frequent changes made to their TOS.

I doubt Google would play games with something as established and major as GMail. But you never know when it comes to Google.

Yeah, I changed it to pop and I can't say it has fixed anything.  I have messed something up but I don't know what.  Or I'm not setting up K9 properly.  And I don't know what's happening to my desktop client (Bat).  It could also be my antispam software.  I don't know.

The other part of the problem is I've been paying less attention to my personal computing ecosystem, so there's that. Not that I changed anything.  But I don't know.  I'm so busy now I don't know what's going on.

Ever since I got my Android, I've been messing with my gmail settings to get them just the way I wanted.  It's been weird, so I'm going to tell the whole story.

Android, Nexus 5, custom ROM
email app: K9 Mail

I've never used IMAP before since I just download everything on my client at home (desktop).  But I figured I'd play around with it since it is supposed make things easier once you start using multiple devices.

Ever since enabling IMAP, I have had lots of difficulty finding messages through the K9 app.  SOmetimes a new mail will come on my gmail, I'll read it, but then it's gone on the phone!  And it seems to mess with the pop download too on my client at home.  If i read it really quickly before the pop downloads it...well it still seems to download, but my junkmail program flags it as spam or something and it sometimes ends up in the junk folder.  weird.

So now I'm turning imap off.  I don't need the folder syncing anyway.  This is like my 4th time trying imap, it never stuck with me.  I'm not crazy with my folders and organization...only on my home desktop client do i organize things because it gets archived there locally.

There you go.  back to work.

The key to understanding regex is realizing they are 20% knowledge, 70% experience (including, but not limited to your own), and 10% voodoo - except when they are 100% impossible. Unfortunately determining which formula applies is, in many cases, pure guess work.

@SB - it's very light on its feet and the free edition protects better the MSE IMO. My GF had a few niggling things get through MSE a short time ago that didn't get spotted until her weekly MBAM scan. Happened about three times. Since I put the freebie Bitdefender on her PC MBAM comes up completely clean.

I like Bitdefender. It's been around forever and earns consistent high detection scores in tests. I especially like their small business and enterprise products. They've always worked well for me in a client setting. YMMV.

Note: I've used (at one time or another) AV solutions from:

Avast
AVG
Avira
Bitdefender
CA
ESET
F-Protect
Kapersky
McAfee
Norton
Symantec

Of the above, I would still consider using Kapersky. And possibly AVG since it seems to really be at home with Windows 8 (which is coming whether we want it or not). Even has a pretty 'Win8-look' to its dashboard. The clients I have that use AVG are happy with it, even if I think it's feature set is bulking up alarmingly with each new release. (Note. AVG's customer service can sometimes be a little hard to deal with - so keep good track of your license keys and customer ID in case you do need to talk to them.)

Most of the other products I thought were great at one time. Or at least I did until they mucked them up with feature bloat. I'll also +1 w/Mouser on ESET. Their NOD32 antivirus was one of the absolute best products available - until they broke it.

I generally don't have much need for local firewall (or related features) on my home PCs. The firewall, along with antispam and privacy controls, are handled by my gateway for the entire network. So on the local machines I just run Bitdefender + the Windows built-in firewall and call it a day. I also keep a copy of the free versions of SuperAntispyware and MBAM on each machine for additional on-demand checking - and a bootable Kapersky USB key and restoration images in case some mega-disaster ever strikes.

Outside of that, keeping Windows religiously updated, and my other software regularly updated (mostly :-[ ) constitutes my Windows security regimen.

A, being a fan of Small and Light, that was nice! But see the note about behavior vs signatures. What if you got that to behave with a second AV program without them fighting each other? Could the combined power of the two approaches synergistically become "more than the sum of the parts"?

Hard to say, but the AV players are aware of it. As a result, many of the big AV products (that are signature based) also include a heuristic/suspicious behavior scanning feature. Many people leave it off. And it's not necessarily turned on by default.

Depends on what you mean by "solution".  I have a semi-automated solution that involves:
--a Mac OSX machine
--two Android apps (not free)
--two Windows programs (one is not free)

The entire setup takes about 15-18 steps for the end user to configure.
