Another option which wasn't mentioned in Gizmo's newsletter is the offer from AOL. They are offering their members a free copy of McAfee VirusScan Plus. All you need is an AOL email address to get it, and you can now get one of those for free.

I thought we were trying to boycott McAfee for their terrible habit of too many false positives, especially with DC software.

Deozaan: You should try v5. You can install only the parts you want and it runs just as fast as 2.x

I'm pretty sure I have tried a few of the v5 editions. Too much stuff for my basic needs, even with minimal install.

I used MM3 and think it's probably the most feature-complete player, but then I realized that I was allocating ~250MB of memory to play music... not nice.

Now I use a super-simple winamp 5.53 with nothing but the basics. It uses ~40Mb when minimized on tray.

Like I said, I have WinAmp 2.81 LITE installed and running and it's currently playing music, displayed on my desktop, taking up less than 4MB -- Probably about the same size as the song that's currently playing.

I think I have a copy of WinAmp 2.81 LITE that I've held on to for all these years for many of the same reasons as mentioned earlier.

It's installed and in use right now.  :)

Until I stumbled upon t-clock which is free and was upgraded to Win64bit compatibility and is now maintained by stoic joker, who hangs out here at the DC forums.  It works perfectly and I love it :)

That link doesn't work.

Developer's Corner / Re: Procedural Game Coding Contest (May 5 to June 2)

Procedurally generating content in games is nothing new at all, as you cleverly remarked...
So basically every random roguelike are easy entries in this contest...

Indeed! Even popular games like Diablo have quite a large dose of procedurally/algorithmically generated content mixed in them.

I suppose then, the skill comes in coming up with an algorithm to procedurally generate something.

So I am wondering - does anyone have an interest in a 'Maze Craze 3D'? I would love to make a 3D version, but the full version of 3D Rad is $160 (4 months savings, plus I am 9 weeks in the hole with my mom), so I don't want to start saving up all this money and end up buying it just to find out that no one would care.

Opinions? Thoughts?

Why not use Panda3D, Irrlicht, Blender, or another freeware/Open Source engine listed here?

One day in 2D Land was far too long.. He was just squirming to become a 3D Model.. And thats what he has done.. I'm proud to present Boom in 3D, High poly and low.
Any feedback is gladly appreciated.  Thanks! :)

I think the low poly version looks better. They're nearly identical, but the low poly one looks more rounded like a sphere. Strange that adding 3000 polys could make it look worse... Anyway, since they appear to be nearly identical, there's really no use in having all those extra polys.

I am not able to see any difference between the two picture files.

- and what is 'poly'?  :tellme:

"Poly" is short for "polygon" which are usually triangles or squares. All 3D objects (when referring to computer rendering) are made up of polygons. If you've ever seen a 3D object's wireframe, you get to see the outline of every polygon. There's a nice picture of a low poly Dolphin on this wikipedia page

Developer's Corner / Re: Forking in Open Source Projects - Debate
« Last post by Deozaan on May 16, 2008, 08:05 PM »
Since I'm not experienced with doing anything with Open Source Software besides downloading it and using it, I can't really help much with licenses and those kinds of things, but what mouser describes sounds very reasonable to me, although it is clearly against a number of the points described in the Open Source Initiative definition.

Point #4 seems to be the point that agrees most with what mouser is saying, as it could require any forks to be installed as unofficial patches on to the pristine base code of the original author(s):

4. Integrity of The Author's Source Code

The license may restrict source-code from being distributed in modified form only if the license allows the distribution of "patch files" with the source code for the purpose of modifying the program at build time. The license must explicitly permit distribution of software built from modified source code. The license may require derived works to carry a different name or version number from the original software.

Rationale: Encouraging lots of improvement is a good thing, but users have a right to know who is responsible for the software they are using. Authors and maintainers have reciprocal right to know what they're being asked to support and protect their reputations.

Accordingly, an open-source license must guarantee that source be readily available, but may require that it be distributed as pristine base sources plus patches. In this way, "unofficial" changes can be made available but readily distinguished from the base source.

The problem with these is that a 30 day trial does me no good if my key doesn't work. I downloaded the SP3 VL ISO, since I used to have an MSDN subscription and got XP SP2 with a Volume License. I thought it would work with the SP3 disc but apparently it doesn't. So now I'm back to trying to figure out how to get SP2 to update to SP3 without destroying Windows/Microsoft Update. . .
That sounds weird - unless somebody has grabbed & pirated your SP2 VLK (massively), it ought to work with SP3? Contact Microsoft!

I haven't shared my license with anyone. In fact it still works to install SP2. Unless I'm thinking of something else and I don't really need the VL version.

The deal was that I was allowed to install it on something like 5 or 10 different machines.

Nudone kindly sent me this link ...

Download Unmodified ISOs of WinXP SP3

These are full install media for SP3 (various languages and Pro and Home versions).

The main advantage of these is that they are not slipstreamed versions - they are initial install discs went burned. You will need this version if you wish to install Windows XP SP3 without entering a serial code (thus getting a 30 days full trial version which can be activated later).

It's scientifically proven/accepted that humans remember a sequence of somewhere between 7-10 "things" (numbers, words, etc.) so a 4 digit PIN shouldn't be that hard.

I used to be a regular visitor to the IGN sites when I was in high school. Then they started having very similar kinds of interstitial ads, where the entire page was an advertisement with a tiny link in the top right corner that says something like "Click here to continue to the article."

This kind of thing isn't new. IGN has been doing it for probably close to 10 years now.

Also just for clarity, I don't usually visit IGN websites anymore, but my reasons for not going there are not related to the advertising practices.

All these books are from way before my time. Does anyone have any recommendations of some good science fiction?

EDIT: I just found a couple of the Mars books by Edgar Rice Burroughs. My mom kept telling me I should read those from her library, but I never did, so I guess that's what I'll start with. :)

Mark0 had a pretty good idea in one of the spam threads. It sounded neat but might be difficult to implement.

The idea was something similar to this: that for new users, perhaps for their first 5-10 posts, you have SMF automatically google a sentence or two from their post and see if there are any matches. If so, flag the message as potential spam and alert the forum mods. The only potential problem I can see for how this might negatively affect legitimate users is if they have some question that they posted on another forum. So maybe if the google search finds 3 or more matches it gets flagged.

Why not download and burn the ISO file of Windows XP SP3 and install from that ? See:

https://www.donation....msg112022#msg112022

Don't know whether this will solve the problem you describe (probably not) but it is certainly a quicker and cleaner way to do a fresh install of Windows with SP3.

As for the updates you're having problems with what are they? Do they install correctly if you download them and install them manually?
-Carol Haynes (May 11, 2008, 03:29 AM)

Aha! Thanks.

The installs range from Office 2007 SP1, Security updates for Office 2007, as well as .NET frameworks, Microsoft Silverlight, Windows Mediaplayer 11. Basically anything that wasn't covered in SP3 doesn't install from Windows Update.

I haven't tried installing them manually. But if you read what I linked to in the original post, someone else says that manual installs work. But they still show up as needing to be installed in Windows Update.

I just formatted my wife's laptop and installed a nice, fresh copy of Windows XP SP2. Everything went great and smooth and it was really nice to clean all that crap off her system.

Naturally one of the first things I did once the install was complete was go to Windows Update to get all the latest updates. The only thing listed there was Service Pack 3, so I downloaded and installed it. Everything went smoothly without a hitch. It installed and told me to reboot, so I did. When the system loaded back up I went back to Windows Update to get any remaining updates. There were 12 of them. I selected them all and told it to download and install. Everything downloaded but when it came time to install, I got the message "Some updates were not installed" which really meant "None of the updates were installed."

Figuring it to be a strange glitch, I rebooted the computer and tried again. Same result. I tried doing them one at a time. Same result. Only high priority updates. Same result. I tried many different combinations but they all have the same result.

And I'm not alone.

So if you're thinking of doing a fresh install of Windows XP SP2, just be aware that you'll have to install every update since then manually, since Windows Update only lists SP3, at least until this is fixed.

But what part to blog about? I've already written in fairly great detail the many technical, hardware, and customer service problems I've had with Kodak in this thread. I could go into more detail about the software, for instance how all the shortcuts linked to Documents and Settings/All Users/Documents/My Pictures/Kodak/randomnumber.jpg but there wasn't even an All Users/Documents folder, much less the pictures where it said they were.

And besides that, I don't really have an established blog.

Living Room / I officially hate Kodak!
« Last post by Deozaan on May 09, 2008, 02:57 AM »
Okay this just gets worse as time goes by.

I was just going to drop it and let things go, but today I finally discovered two straws that broke the camel's back, chainsawed it into little pieces, and displayed the corpse around the country on pikes to be a lesson to anyone who would dare purchase anything from Kodak.

Since the weather warmed up today, my wife and I took a walk with our camera. We took a few photos and she even filmed a couple short videos. Then when we got home she excitedly told me to get the pictures and videos off the camera so she could see them. So I opened up Picasa and went to the import screen and waited for everything to load up. For some reason it was taking a very long time for all the pictures and videos to display on the import screen (can't get them off until all files have been loaded) so as they would load one by one I'd look at them.

That's when I noticed that many of the videos my wife had taken over the past several months had strange purple lines through them. After watching several of them, the pattern seems to be that any video taken where there is any possibility of a sunlight glare results in big purple/pink discoloration across most of the image. So the videos are still broken after all!

I never noticed this before because I don't use the camera except an occasional photo. The odd thing is that photos all look fine, but videos have the discoloration with sunlight.

That made me mad enough to consider the camel's back broken, but in the meantime, and quite coincidentally, I've been backing up my wife's laptop so I can format it and get all the crap off of it that slows it down. She told me I'd better not delete her "Kodak" photos, to which I merely gave her a look with the accompanying thought of "Why would I do that? I'm sure they'll all be in the My Pictures folder anyway."

So I backed up her music and files and other documents. I looked through her Program Files directories, specifically with the intent of finding any photos that got saved into the Kodak folder. There were no photos to be found, so I was about to call it good and start copying the files over to another computer so I could format when I noticed her desktop picture (a nice, handsome photo of yours truly :P ) and I wanted to make sure I had that one backed up, too. So I went into the directories of photos I backed up and selected View as Thumbnails, looking for it. That's when I noticed that all of her "Kodak" photos were actually shortcuts to the real images.

The problem is, the shortcuts didn't take me to the real images. They couldn't be found. I looked in My Pictures, I looked in Documents and Settings folders for every user on the machine. I looked everywhere I could think of. I couldn't find them anywhere. I was wondering, if they weren't on the computer anymore, why would the shortcuts show the actual photos when in thumbnail mode.

As a last resort I opened up the Kodak EasyShare software, and I saw tons and tons of photos and photo albums. None of which I had backed up. But where were they hiding? The stupid program wouldn't let me find their directory. Finally, the horror of the mistake that almost was dawned on me: Hidden folders.

I'm a power user, so I always have it so I can see hidden folders, but I thought it best if my wife didn't see the contents of hidden folders, the Program Files and Windows directories. I enabled them and of all the unhidden folders in the Program Files\Kodak directory, the only one that was hidden was the one which contained the original photos! And it was actually hidden inside the innocent looking "bin" directory, where no average user would think to look anyway!

As a result, we almost lost 170 original family photos spanning more than the entire length of our life together, including our wedding photos! I'm not even sure how the wedding photos (or others) got in there since they were taken before we even got this camera. I guess Kodak software decided to assimilate any photo it found on the system.

My experience with Kodak has just been one nightmare after another.
