Look at your profile page. There is a way to block forums. I did it to block the SMF forum to avoid Gri posts.

I just thought of something I'm sure we can all agree on.

What's worse that pornography threads on DonationCoder?

Family-Friendly Answer
Gri, posting pornography threads on DonationCoder and asking for gravitations.

Just for the record. I would have absolutely no problem with even the creation (no pun intended, but you gotta admit it's a good one) of a whole forum on "Religious Software". And I would just choose not to read it most of the time. Although a good catchy subject title might peak my interest. In fact, come to think of it, I already do this. I am a PC person and ignore all of the Apple related posts. So, see! Even religious postings don't bother me. Oh! and let's not forget vim vs. emacs! It makes The Crusades look like dodge ball in comparison.

And this bring to mind something that I have been meaning to ask somebody. Now is as good a time as any. So let me start a new thread.

Living Room / Wanted: Electronic/Searchable Holy Books
« Last post by tinjaw on January 05, 2008, 02:21 PM »
I have openly discussed my Atheism here on DonationCoder. I see this as no different than somebody talking about how they are a Jew, Muslim, or Christian. It is just part of who I am and by telling you this, you can better filter my subjective bias from anything I say.

With that addressed up front, I have a serious/legitimate question...

What are your recommendations for the "best" digital holy books? And by best, I mean in terms of academic research.

I am interested in religious books in the same manner as I am interested in the classics of philosophy. I have a BA in Political Science from University of Chicago, with a focus on political philosophy and international relations (mostly the USSR - Class of '89 and the Cold War loomed).

I understand there are many electronic version of holy books, but I have not done the research to find out which ones are best **for the purposes of scholarly study** (i.e. I am not interested in being converted). I would love to have tonnes of footnotes and references available. I would love for a version that contained the texts of all the major religions and would let me compare things like references to the same historical event, compare timelines, etc. If there were footnotes/references to secular texts that cover the same item would be icing on the cake.

I understand that getting ASCII versions of these books is easy, but I am willing to pay for software that has  features like those I have mentioned above. The whole "Digital Media Experience" TM is what I want.

If you would feel uncomfortable posting publicly to this thread, I would keep any personal messages on this matter strictly confidential.

oops! forgot to add: This doesn't count!

I`m a firm believer in the philosophy of a ruling class, especially since I rule.

Unfortunately, based on some of your postings, it is obvious you have no class.  :P However, this is a useful post.  :)

I have downloaded VirtualTreeNavigator so I can give it a test drive (from my USB stick no less).

VirtualTreeNavigator is a database browser that presents data in a hierarchical structure. It can present any RDBMS structure as a taxonomy system using a simple and intuitive XML descriptor.

It can connect to any ADO database and will retrieve data using plain SQL. VirtualTreeNavigator will help you to instantly visualise and understand the structure of any database.

I see from your post count that you are new here. So you wouldn't know that I am DonationCoder's resident Pythonista. (See my sig) So my Python comment was somewhat in jest. However, it would be a great way to get started.

Windows GUI apps written in Python... you probably want to use wxPython. For any native Win32 stuff nothing exists that can touch Mark Hammond's Python Extensions for Windows.

Edit - Hmmm. anyone know why the "4" won't allow the strikethrough?

It's in there. It's just difficult to see because it bumps up against the horizontal line of the 4.

If you folks are going to get medallions, then I want embedded audio so I can show my personality via techno beats!
</class clown humor>

Somehow jgpaiva's examples seem more "palatable" by being DC-focused than attempting to iconize the expansive diversity (OK, I need to go grab my first cup of morning coffee right about now.) of interests all 100,000 members have.

Carol et al.

Let me take a minute to present a slightly different spin on this issue codeTRUCKER has raised in light of your comments. And I shall do so by dragging somebody kicking and screaming into this thread, Urlwolf.  ;) I share a common interest with Jose, the Attention Economy. To summarize the idea, our time, our attention, is very valuable, possibly *the* most valuable asset we have. Many many things fight for our attention and we should have control over what gets our attention.

Some of you have expressed your difficulty in finding some of the topics discussed in this thread as "offensive" while others have expressed their distaste for such topics. I would like to propose that we, for the moment, put aside the specifics of labeling some topic as "taboo" or "offensive" in terms of what is socially acceptable and simply throw them in the big bucket labeled "Off Topic".

(Now hear me out. I understand some have pointed to things which they feel are "on topic".)

People participate/lurk in various forums for various reasons. Most forums have a central "theme" (for lack of a better term) that draws the *attention* of people to it. That theme is something they all have a common interest in. In DonationCoder's case, that theme, that common interest is...

DonationCoder.com is..
  • .. the official home for tons of exclusive professional-quality freeware/donationware programs.
  • .. the source of the most comprehensive reviews in the shareware industry.
  • .. the best place to get the biggest discounts on the world's best programs.
  • .. one of the most active forums on the internet for software connoisseurs.
  • .. one of only a handfull of microdonation-enabled sites in the world, where you can request custom-made software.
  • .. all funded by voluntary user donations.

But besides those explicitly stated topics, each of us has weaved between and around those topics other topics which we see as partially overlapping. As we get further and further from the core theme, members will start to disagree on what is "relevant" to the community. Some message boards choose to have a specific "off-topic" forum for those posts which are blatantly so, but some posts sit on both sides of the fence.

Let's take the Attention Economy and Information/Knowledge Management as two examples of topics I have personally interwoven with those topics explicitly stated as of interest to the DC community. When somebody posts a question about choosing a "more efficient RSS reader" it starts to cross into those two topics. However, there are other issues in "Academic Productivity" that don't involve software that I may be interested in and I'd be delighted to learn about them through a comment Jose makes on DC forums, especially because 1) Jose has already vetted it and found it interesting and 2) because he will most likely present it in a manner that shows how they interrelate in a manner I would agree with.

So, in this new light, try to simply consider sex/porn/vulgarity/cursing/etc. as just another "category", as just another topic that is sometimes interwoven with those explicitly focused upon by DC forums. And in this light I see this as "just another" Attention Economy issue. We all would like the tools to be able to find(or filter) nuggets of information that we *personally* feel is worthwhile (or worthless).

So, as has been stated here already by others, let's all try to put the specifics of the "off topic" item of your personal choosing aside, and concentrate on making DonationCoder forums more Attention Economy-friendly, thereby making DC even better for each and everyone of us by allowing us to easily share our common interests in the "city center" while allowing for discussion of our varied related topics in the "suburbs" of the forums without distracting those who choose to not participate in your particular shade of gray.

BTW, this "problem" isn't unique to DonationCoder by any stretch of the imagination. This is a fundamental issue at the core of all "online communities". This is a subject many great minds have attempted to conquer. If we can find some small way to make DC even more valuable to codeTRUCKER and Carol, as well as to Renegade and f0dder, then we, as a community, will have accomplished to make a perl from the grain of sand that is this thread. (intelligent design or evolution?  :P )

slightly off topic, and to avoid hijacking this thread...
Spoiler
slightly off topic, but relevant as far as "as porn goes, so goes cheap technology" - I am not buying a HDDVD or Blu-ray (or whatever they're caled) DVD player, not because I am afraid one beating out the other in the market, it is because HD and Bue-ray discs are gosh darn expensive! And I know, without a doubt in my mind, that as soon as the porn industry starts selling blue-ray and HD discs, the demand will cause the price to drop 50-75% - the players and the discs. Why do you think bandwidths are what they are today? Joe/Jane consumer wanted to download porn in the privacy of their own home instead of venturing out to the porn store and risk being seen. VHS? ditto. etc.

codeTRUCKER, I think your *idea* is good, but your suggested *implementation* isn't. Why? For the same reasons people have complained about the content of signatures. What you are asking for I agree would add some personality but is also already implemented 1) by having sig blocks 2) by having a personal page. In short, there are already means to allow somebody to learn about others in a way that doesn't "clutter" the threads. Basically your icon and your sig are socially acceptable means for expressing yourself and others can "click to learn more".

I have chosen to self-censor my reply.

This is my fourth attempt at a reply. All my rambling in the previous attempts boil down to 1) Good for you codeTRUCKER for stating your opinion. 2) Good for DC for genuinely accepting codeTRUCKER and his opinion. 3) Good for everybody for looking for a mutually acceptable solution. And then there was the inevitable fourth thing - me taking advantage of this thread as yet another opportunity to act like the class/forum clown and present my reply in a manner to get cheap laughs by using NSFW content throughout.

Why self-censor? Because, in the end, I don't mind doing it for the same reasons I *do* mind censorship.

P.S. Also because my signature in this forum pretty much already states my opinion.

General Software Discussion / Is Vista Creating Duplicate Files of Everything?
« Last post by tinjaw on January 04, 2008, 01:11 PM »
A friend of mine called me today with a question about Vista. He is installing MS Office and his anti-virus software and he claims that everything is taking up twice the space it does on his XP computer. I told him it sounded just like Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom, felt it was a security enhancement to shadow all of the files "for enhanced security". Can anybody verify that my guess is correct?

Would this be something you would want to be added to HowLong2It? Would anybody else? If there is need/demand for it, I can probably add it in a few weeks time. I am too busy now.

In reply to one of the comments on his blog he mentions that he'll be picking up development on Direct Folders after the stable release of TeraCopy 2, thought to be in another week or two.

Good on both counts. Direct Folders is in desperate need of some stability bug fixes.

i don't know what incentives we can give to our (source-code) suppliers to produce meaningful code.

Competition.

If there is a lack of quality software in any particular niche, see it as an opportunity. Hire a developer and write the library for your own product then sell the library. Take advantage of the market and put the other guys out of business.

N.A.N.Y. 2008 / Click2LogIt

Click2LogIt is a way to keep track when events occur. It runs as a tray icon and clicking on the tray icon will log the date & time to a log file. Along with the datetime stamp a user-definable notation is made.

The impetus for this program was a coding snack idea posted by 222fbj.
