Developer's Corner / Amit Patel's Red Blob Games and Game Programming Pages
« Last post by mouser on February 19, 2014, 07:22 PM »
DC member App103 found this fantastic collection of articles and links by Amit Patel on game Programming.

He discusses pathfinding, procedural world generation, AI coding, and a huge range of wonderful topics.  Very nicely organized and presented.

I’ve been helping people make games since 1990. I wrote games earlier in life, with Solar Realms Elite being the most well known, then worked on an environmental simulation game called BlobCity, then took a break for over a decade. The recent rise of indie, mobile, tablet, social, and web games have made me interested in game development again. My current passion is using interactivity on the web for learning, especially learning game algorithms. With modern web browsers, there’s no need for explanations to follow the formats used in magazines, technical papers, and books. We can combine learning by reading, learning by watching, and learning by doing.

40hz, thanks very much for the extended AVG license link -- that will come in very handy to extend my trial a bit!
If I stick with AVG I will be happy to purchase a full license (through Amazon.com which is a lot cheaper than official AVG page for some reason).

General Software Discussion / Re: Processing Delays!?

This drives me bonkers.  It started happening on an XP install of mine and I could never find a way to identify what was causing it or to fix it.

I think the fact that it doesn't show up in the Task Manager cpu suggested that it is a low level system driver of some sort.

However, I strongly suspected it was caused by ESet antivirus/firewall -- the fact that it was happening always during disk access was one clue.

Screenshot Captor / Re: Automated Install of ScreenShot Captor
« Last post by mouser on February 18, 2014, 05:29 AM »
Just run the program, configure the settings how you want, and exit.  That will generate your first ScreenshotCaptor.ini file with all of the settings as you have configured them interactively.

By the way you can also place a ScreenshotCaptor.ini file in the same directory as the installer and it will be pre-isntalled as well. This can be useful if you want to install the program with some non-default settings pre-configured (you can edit the ScreenshotCaptor.ini file by hand to remove all but the settings you care about).

Yes.  If you have a license key you can place it in the same directory as the installer, in a file named "DonationCoder_ScreenshotCaptor_Key.dat", and it will be automatically installed along with the program, which I think should eliminate the message you are talking about.

The most common cause of this is that people download the free license key for the wrong program.
When you grab the license key from https://www.donation...r.com/Keys/index.php make sure you click the link for Screenshot Captor.

I think one interesting thing about this article is the recommendations at the end:

I always accepted the messy bits of Windows in the past because the system addressed such a large audience. But given the way things are going, Windows should evolve into a system that is laser targeted to the customers who will in fact continue using it regularly. That's mostly business users, but even when you look at the consumers who will use Windows, that usage is almost entirely productivity related. Windows should focus on that. On getting work done. On an audience of doers. Job one should be productivity.

I could not resist posting an extended quote from this article on the Windows 8 disaster and the possible road back for Microsoft:

After watching Windows Vista get mismanaged and then slapped around by Apple, it tapped Steven Sinofsky to reimagine Windows. It's fair to say that this man shares many of the same character traits—and flaws—that defined Steve Jobs. He was belligerent and one-sided, didn't work well with others, had no qualms about tossing out features and technologies that didn't originate with his group, and had absolutely zero respect for customer feedback. Here, finally, was a guy who could push through a Steve Jobs-style, singular product vision.

And he did. Sadly, the result was Windows 8.

The reason this happened is that while Sinofsky had the maniacal power and force of will of a Steve Jobs, he lacked Jobs' best gift: An innate understanding of good design. Windows 8 is not well-designed. It's a mess. But Windows 8 is a bigger problem than that. Windows 8 is a disaster in every sense of the word.

This is not open to debate, is not part of some cute imaginary world where everyone's opinion is equally valid or whatever. Windows 8 is a disaster. Period.

While some Windows backers took a wait-and-see approach and openly criticized me for being honest about this, I had found out from internal sources immediately that the product was doomed from the get-go, feared and ignored by customers, partners and other groups in Microsoft alike. Windows 8 was such a disaster that Steven Sinofsky was ejected from the company and his team of lieutenants was removed from Windows in a cyclone of change that triggered a reorganization of the entire company. Even Sinofsky's benefactor, Microsoft's then-CEO Steve Ballmer, was removed from office. Why did all this happen? Because together, these people set the company and Windows back by years and have perhaps destroyed what was once the most successful software franchise of all time.

General Software Discussion / Re: trying to combine antiviruses and firewalls
« Last post by mouser on February 16, 2014, 06:55 AM »
I split this off into its own thread.. you are asking for trouble if you combine multiple resident firewalls and antiviruses.  You can combine NON-resident antivirus engines.

One of the nice things about Agnitum is that it can be used as a firewall only, so you can combine it with a different antivirus -- which might make sense since i'm not sure what the caliber of Agnitum's antivirus engine is.

However, I'm confused about Agnitum's free offering -- I wish someone would explain that to me -- how it compares to the full one.

ps. For those looking for fine-granularity control, this combination firewall+antivirus looks very promising and is in the same class as Eset, Outpost, and Comodo: http://www.emsisoft.com/

I have for years been a fan of Eset's offerings -- their antivirus and then their combined antivirus and firewall.

Before switching to Eset I was a big fan of Agnitum.

From my standpoint, Eset has the best, most utilitarian and powerful user system, as far as user options and interface.

The options and alerts are excellent -- and they still have some firewall features that for some reason few have copied -- like when an alert pops up you can choose to ignore it for the current session (or once, or create a rule).

So many of the firewalls reviewed (and which get good ratings) offer so little control and information.  There really needs to be a distinction between truly flexible controllable firewalls like Eset, Outpost, and Comodo, which are in a different class than the others, that just silently do their job and offer you little information or control -- and little help if something is being silently blocked which shouldn't be.  It does alert me when anything tries to connect in or out which I like to know.

I love the clean interface of Eset's tools -- and they get just about every single thing right when it comes to organizing and presenting options, logs, alerts, etc.

HOWEVER, I have recently dumped Eset despite being a paying customer.  I have confirmed that their firewall makes my computer unstable and causes programs to occasionally hang and require a reboot to terminate.  Prior to windows 7, a known and apparently unfixable-by-them bug in their win xp x64 version would cause computer freeze and blue screen when attaching an external usb.  This was a known problem for years that i cast a blind eye to. When freezes started happening on my win7 machine, i had enough.

For the last week I've been trialing AVG internet security.  I tried a dozen others but AVG was the one that I found least offensive.  I might try outpost again, as I always liked Outpost, but right now AVG is doing pretty well by me.

I did not install the optional stuff like web browsing guards, identity guards, etc. -- and thankfully those are optional installs.  Those seem too likely to cause problems and slowdowns to me.

AVG does *not* offer the kind of fine granularity control of the powerful firewalls like Eset and Outpost, but it does offer more control and transparency than some of the truly minimal ones.  But my patience for micro-managing firewall access control rules has diminished over the years, so that's not bothering me as much as it would have in the past.

In terms of basic antivirus and firewall, i'm not unhappy with AVG, and the system performance and stability seem really excellent, which is my main concern these days.

Find And Run Robot / Re: Custom memo fixed font

I was going to suggest what verszipo said  :-[

But I do have a faint memory of switching to a fixed font when running displaying capture console contents (with things like runcap).  So I'll have to add a new custom font setting.  I've put it on my todo list.

You should use PNG file format for screenshots.
It is far smaller than BMP and preserves all information including transparency (jpg degrades screenshots and has no transparency).

Added another possibility above noted by hamradio.

The problem may be in it being copied to clipboard -- can you try just looking at the image inside SC and see if its ok, and if so, drag and drop it to your other program instead of using clipboard.

Thanks for the tip mwb -- just tried Usb Safely Remove and you are right, it handles this scenario perfectly too.

Thanks also to Cranioscopical for his minireview here.

Ian makes a good point!

Screenshot Captor, when properly working, will make those corners TRANSPARENT in the image file (png).

The following things can make it APPEAR as if the corners are wrong, when they are really captured perfectly:
1. If your image viewing program shows transparent areas as black.
2. If you save the image as a format that does not support transparency (jpg, bmp).
3. If you copy the image to clipboard it may not preserve transparency (suggested by hamradio)

So the first thing to do is check the Screenshot Captor window itself and see how the corners look.
8121
Oh does it? I didn't know that -- that might be worth a look -- I thought it only handled USB devices.  If it does this as well as USB stuff, it might be worth me trying.

LaunchBar Commander / Re: LaunchBar Commander beta 1.40.01
« Last post by mouser on February 13, 2014, 07:05 PM »
Happy to (re)hear about additional bugs so I don't forget to fix them in this next round.

The other main thing I want to fix that i hit recently was that LBC silently fails to launch items that can't be found; this can be especially confusing if you move your LBC config between machines.  I will make it report when an item can't be launched, and add a Maintenance item to report a list of all bad commands to make it easier for you to identify and correct them.

LaunchBar Commander / LaunchBar Commander beta 1.40.01
« Last post by mouser on February 13, 2014, 07:03 PM »
I'm going to be posting some early beta versions for LBC as I try to tweak and fix some bugs/issues I've only just noticed.
I might be updating these pretty rapidly so if you don't feel like downloading you can just wait till an official release.

Download:

v1.40.01 beta:
  • Bugfix - LBC was not properly identifying full screen applications, causing it not to unhide when it should if current window was maximized (but not full screen); if you have turned off the option to Keep LaunchBars "On Top" and you use AutoHiding docks, you should try re-enabling this option.  Should make it possible to use full screen games without LBC waking up.

Thank you for sticking up for the site, longrun -- it is appreciated.  But let's remember that sometimes the best way to promote civility is to demonstrate it even in the face of a challenge.  I think it is better for us to be a good example, and it costs us nothing to offer people the benefit of the doubt.

SC has a feature that will remove those, and it is enabled by default when you use Alt+PrtScr to capture the active window.

You should should see the screen flash black and white while it captures that window, and it should remove them.

(that's assuming you haven't changed any options related to window transparency capture).

Are you capturing that window using Alt+PrtScr?
