General Software Discussion / Re: Any better Clipboard program.

Stuf 2 is on bits du jour today.  For $13, I'm thinking about getting it- looks pretty interesting, and is networkable.

On another note Surfulater is there today too.

UPDATE: Just noticed that Stuf 2 requires Windows 7.  A killer for me.

Living Room / Re: Steam: Savior or Slayer of PC Gaming?
« Last post by wraith808 on August 30, 2011, 07:08 AM »
Well I have 100+ games in Steam, so I might be downloading for one of them, playing on another. Why is this not possible?

It is.  If one is in offline mode and you're playing, and the other is connected and you're downloading, doesn't that solve the problem?  I do it all the time.  Like I said, one of my gaming machines is never connected; however, I do play on it.  In a lot of cases, it's because my other machine is downloading something, and I don't want to play on it while it's downloading.  And truthfully, I prefer the steam way of doing things (i.e. consolidation) even if it doesn't lend itself to playing multiple copies.  That's why I buy from them whenever possible, because I don't have multiple packages/launchers like GG or D2D.  And it does seem that on quite a few games, when compared to these other services, the DRM that's on the individual packages on GG/D2D isn't present on Steam.

Again, I'm not saying that some of the features that you ask for might not be nice to have.  But I do like a lot about how they are doing things now, including:
  • how everything is consolidated under one platform
  • the fact that having its own DRM system makes many that would include other DRM change their mind
  • the fact that there is even an offline mode that makes working around some of the limitations easier
  • the fact that they've even added the social media features.  no other platform has them integrated to the degree that steam does

Are there things that can be improved?  Yes.  But to ignore the advantages given thus far, especially as its evolving undercut the efforts that have been made, that I for one appreciate.

DC Member Programs and Projects / Re: GameShui Launcher

I'm curious:did you continue your development on this one? I'm tired of having partial launchers (like steam or raptr that dont allow reasonably documented manual adding) so looking at the 3 mentioned on DC again :)

I plan to (it will probably be a NANY entry at this rate).  I stopped for a while to think about direction and design; I'll be revamping the whole thing based on the initial feedback here.

Wraith, I think in some of your responses you are assuming she is trying to run the same game in multiple places at the same time (hence your references to physical media).  However, I don't read that into it at all, and as long as they are not the same game, there is a HUGE difference in capabilities there.  Running two copies at the same time may be a no-no, but it shouldn't stop you from installing it on one machine while playing a different game on another machine, just because it is the same account.

Though Deo answered, I just wanted to say that I do that exact same thing, i.e. install on more than one computer.  I have it on my tablet, both of my gaming pcs, and am getting ready to install it on my work laptop.  Only one can be connected at a time, but I haven't brought my backup gaming pc nor my tablet online in forever, and I play on them pretty regularly.

I don't think you can turn this off. I've looked and I couldn't find how. It's an annoyance I'd like to disable. That said, I only have to enter the verification code once per browser per computer. The only reason I can see why you would have to do this so often is if you are clearing your cache/cookies or maybe if you're constantly changing your IP address?

I was talking from experience, not speculatively.  I have mine on (I have gotten a bit paranoid about my gaming accounts as of late and have authenticators on everything that will take it now), but it used to be that I hated it.  Especially since it seems to activate a lot more if you use your account in a lot of different places.

From within Steam.  View -> Settings will bring up this dialog.

Click the button the arrow is pointing to, and the following dialog will appear.

Click the radio button.  Then click next and follow the prompts.

steam asumes that the user is a thief

Huh?

In what way(s) does Steam assume the user is a thief?

Let's see...
* I have to enter an email verification code at least twice a week, if not more often because I use two computers and multiple browsers. Sometimes these emails take a while to arrive and in between... no play

This is for security.  You can turn this off in your settings.

* I cannot run steam on two machines at once. Even though I have 100 games on Steam. Connecting on one immediately closes the other. I cannot download on one machine while playing on another, even though this is a common scenario since Steam forces all games on the same 1 partition and most of us have non infinite partitions...
An annoyance that I run across to be sure.  But how is this so different than when we had physical media?  And how is this assuming you are a criminal?

* Offline mode doesn't really work reliably. I am currently staying regularly in a little hotel without room internet access and most of the time Steam finds a reason or another... some bit of information missing which makes it doubt I have used steam on the machine before. Perhaps one time out of 3 I can play when offline. Assumption: unless it can validate everything, I am not allowed to play my games
I can't really comment, other than to say that the statement should be that it doesn't work reliably for you.  I use it quite a bit on my netbook and on my other computer previously mentioned.  Both of them stay in offline mode, and both of them have never had a problem with playing any game in offline mode- including MMOs.

If I let my husband play one of my 100 games, I am a steam-criminal. I am supposed to buy a separate copy of each game... Sorry Steam but the natural unit of a game played is the household. Now we have always bought two copies of games we both wanted to play a lot, or play online. (we have 2 copies of all Half Life games, Portal, Portal 2, Dungeon Keeper, Kohan, Din's Curse, Defense Grid etc. etc.) but there are many games which we might just dabble in and it should be possible to NOT have to buy two copies...

Not a Steam criminal- it just doesn't work in the way that we'd ideally like it to work.  But it's understandable when compared against the limitations of physical media that it would be this way.  I don't like it- but I don't see where the assuming I am a criminal comes in.  Their business model is not as I would like it (and this is the reason that they have a lot of games that GoG doesn't), but it is what it is.

At the end of the day GoG has chosen to limit their catalog by sticking to their guns on DRM, and I do appreciate it, especially for the unique offerings in its catalog.  But I also like the convenience of downloading and firing up Deus Ex on launch day, and not having to use media for it, so Steam offers me something other than the assumption that I'm a criminal, IMO.

I've been thinking- I think there are a couple other people on DC who have extra games on Steam (I know I do)- maybe we should put together a giveaway (or contest) especially for Steam games?  Just a thought...

@Seth - I can't help but ask, what is CNET's position about one of their employees speaking to the general public about a controversial issue surrounding the company.

Most corporations have fairly strict rules about employees not doing that sort of thing.
 :)

They should give him a promotion ;).

They should, but I'm just hopeful that he doesn't experience anything negative from his initiative.

I use ClipMate, and it's just there.  I don't use the fancy features most of the time, but being able to see what's on the clipboard is definitely very useful, and when I do need the fancy features, they're there.  And it doesn't affect my systems.  That's all I really need. :)

General Software Discussion / Re: Cnet's Download.com and the installer scam
« Last post by wraith808 on August 24, 2011, 03:18 PM »
The real problem is that many developers don't have the resources in time and money  to advertise and host their own downloads. So once download.com goes away (which there's a 50-50 chance it will if it either can't "make it's numbers" - or generates enough negative publicity that it becomes seen as a pariah) it's the developers that get hurt in the end.

I don't think many people actually browse download.com.  Their only contribution IMO is their SEO, and they are a central place so you don't have to be as wary of downloads from source that you have no experience with.  Once it's gone, the same searches will bring up the authors' site rather than download.com, so the only real thing missing would be the safety factor- and if they're going the way of being sketchy themselves, that's not a big loss.

I want WP7 to be successful, and actually want a WP7 device.  However, I run into the dual problem of (a) some of the apps I use on my phone daily aren't available on WP7 and (b) I have too much money invested into iOS apps.  My first smartphone was a windows mobile phone, and I have had several since.  I had the same pain when I moved from windows mobile (my last was a Pantech Duo that my daughter only recently upgraded from), and don't relish going through that again.

*sigh*

Something I noticed, and wanted to make sure I was reading this right:  I posted from the mobile view for the first time today, and there was a little phone beside the post topic where the rectangle normally is.  Does this happen whenever you post from the mobile view?  Or is something else driving this?

P.S. I wonder what happens to the apps that already bundles crapware toolbars within the installers, will the end-users end up with two toolbars trying to kill each other in the same browser? LOL.
-lotusrootstarch (August 24, 2011, 06:42 AM)

I hope it would be like Highlander meets Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome.  There can be only one!  Two toolbars enter...one toolbar leaves.

I'd pay to see it.   :P

Except then the toolbar that won would absorb all the evil power of the defeated toolbar. Making it an ultra powerful evil toolbar that can't be uninstalled and leaves behind traces in the registry and other folders. >:(

Maybe there'd be a not-quite-evil toolbar that would go around killing bad toolbars one-by-one in an episodic nature?

Nah... to fictional for even SyFy to take it on.

+1 on xyplorer.  Xplorer2 and Directory opus work for that also- just turn off the other pane.  But my choice is XYplorer, even though my day-to-day choice on my desktop/laptop is directory opus.

The response to my email to them telling them to remove all donationcoder software was to tell me to purchase their premium service if i wanted to remove their bundled installer crap.  In other words this is one big extortion racket.

Wait a minute...they won't remove your software from their site?

I think it's a matter of it going to a person that didn't understand your request, or an automated reply system.  What e-mail address did you send it to?

*I* get it, I think...

Question and possible hint...

Although there are many differences when talking about a piece of software, where many features can be disabled or set in options, I think many of the points you are making can be seen at work in some of the most elegant software applications -- where authors really do consider themselves like architects -- trying to keep everything consistent and elegant and striving to create something with an artistic vision.

When designing a building, there are also several options that can be 'turned on and off' in a manner of speaking.  It's not as simple as flipping a switch, but it is relatively as easy as that in comparison, i.e. colors of paint, or tiling, or other such things.

I think that NinJA999 is right on with a lot of his analogies; though many software developers are just trying to get things done, I think that most that are in the field are trying to better themselves, and write software that shows this.  I've been architect on a few projects in a few locations (don't currently have the title at my current position, but I am doing the work of one, and hoping for a promotion soon), and when in that position in an enterprise, you have to take such things into account- at least if you want to maintain your position.  Because once all is said and done, whatever framework ("foundation") you've put in will limit what can be built on top of it.

8021
Being my first one, I must credit Mouser for most of the work, I had missed a fair few topics that should have been in :P

Ah... but what matters is that you stepped up to help!
8022
In the end, using a program is a contract between a developer and the user community.  Both have an investment in the product, and the developer has to have a certain amount of buy-in to implement features, because he has a great responsibility to his product in order to keep the vision and the direction.  If he doesn't see what the value of a feature is, and doesn't see what it will add to the life of the product/it doesn't fit his vision, then I don't think that's a failing of the developer necessarily- it's just a change in the direction of the product that he doesn't want to make.  Then it becomes the user's responsibility to either make a more compelling case with the help of the rest of the community, accept that this feature will not be in the product, or start to look into different products.

TL;DR - just because it's easy to implement, doesn't mean it's right for the product, IMO.

Developer's Corner / Re: A bit of help C# and MySql
« Last post by wraith808 on August 20, 2011, 07:35 AM »
I'd agree with SJ on this one.  It appears like a syntax problem with the DLL you are using rather than a C# problem.  I tried to find a reference online to that DLL and maybe documentation and found something, but I can't download without registering.

It seems that there is source on that site that uses it in this thread.  I can't download it to see since I'm not registered, but I'd recommend downloading it and taking a look to see what the syntax should be from the source.

Also, if you're just trying to use MySQL and can't get this to work, you might look into MySQL Connector/NET.  There's a good tutorial on using it here.

Oh, I wasn't saying that there was no comparison.  It's just that the comparison that they put forth was half-baked at best.  They don't even really give any reasons for who won.  Just a chart, and some few blurbs after.
