Yeah, me too! I use Mobysaurus regularly. Sure wish it were still being developed!

Thanks!

Screenshot Captor / Re: New Captures Not Showing in SSC Right Away
« Last post by J-Mac on January 22, 2011, 06:22 PM »
Well thank you sir! I am so happy that for once the issue I reported isn't occurring on only one computer in the entire universe - mine! My computer spits out so darn many graphics errors that I think the last two or three issues I found with SSC were never replicated by anyone else.

Screenshot Captor / New Captures Not Showing in SSC Right Away
« Last post by J-Mac on January 22, 2011, 06:09 PM »
With the latest release of Screenshot Captor new captures are not showing up in the main interface right away. If I go back in later - after the next capture - it is there most of the time. Sometimes it takes longer than that. The image is in the Screenshots folder; just not showing up in the sidebar pane of SSC.

Thanks!

Jim

Should have included: SSC 2.89.01 on Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit.

Oh, no harm, no foul!   :)  As thick-skinned as I need to be...  (Shoot, I grew up Irish surrounded by miles of Italian neighborhoods in South Philadelphia.) Plus I really don’t mind getting kicked around for principles. Do it all the time!

Sympathize? With Siber Systems? Surely you jest!

I can certainly understand the folly of offering so-called "lifetime" licenses, though if developers see fit to offer them then they damn well better have a good business plan in place that supports them. And if they don’t then they are either very stupid - which I doubt in Siber System's case - or they are just full of crap and know damn well up front that they will renege on the licenses at some point. Now that I believe.

Of course there is one more case to consider: Developers such as Slysoft - who offered lifetime licenses for a long time and have since basically invented just about every advancement in breaking copy protection of CD's, DVD's, and Blue Ray. When it got to the point of them needing to change their license model to survive they kept their promised license model in place for those to whom they sold it and changed the model only for new customers from that point on. And when they got some negative feedback anyway (read: crying and whining from those who had somehow used the software for years without ever purchasing... hmmm), they put it off for a whole year AND offered their lifetime licenses all that year at a discount. Then they changed it. And only for new customers. That's how it should be done.

For other developers who started out offering their product licenses with "free updates" with no limitations stated, they are con artists and for them I have absolutely no sympathy at all. None. Zip. Zilch. Nada. May they fail in their endeavors and choke on their own avarice!

Not that I take it personally or anything.   :P

Thank you.

Thanks Zaine! Understood now.

Mahesh2k: Basically in Windows Home Server (WHS) you could add various makes and sizes of hard drives and the server would look at them all as one giant storage. No drive letters to worry over. Getting short on storage? Just pop in another 1 TB drive and pick up work where you left off. That is the feature that is being removed from the latest version. (My understanding, anyway).   :)

When somebody comes to me with "information" about things like silver's future selling price, I just run it through the IFSEPBD (Incredible Fifteen Second Explosion-Proof Bullshit Detector) function. It consists of asking one simple question: Why are you telling me this?

Within fifteen seconds (max) of receiving an answer, you somehow always know exactly what you should say or do in response.

It's almost like voodo... ;D

Oh how I love this post!!   :P :D

Thanks!

When I first read about this I noticed that HP dropped WHS like a hot potato in its Media Server line, and is now using WebOS. (Zaine mentioned that in the original post too.) So how will that work? I thought that WebOS was just a cute name for distributed computing. So HP will have all your data online? Like on their own servers, or Amazon S3? Rather than local? Or am I misunderstanding the term?

Thanks!

I just used your referral link but I'm not sure I got the Amazon deal. It mentioned something about Amazon not being liable.....yada, yada, at the bottom but after submitting a throwaway address it showed me a restaurant free appetizer deal. Guess I'll find out soon enough!

Thanks for the heads-up and the referral link!

As to the comment that a 30 second wait isn't unreasonable, I say Bullshit! I donated to him! I don’t want to see such crap and so I do indeed donate to every free software developer whose app I use. Granted there are a lot I have tried and didn't continue to use - they get nothing. But I do use some freeware and I always donate if requested. And I have donated in cases when it was NOT requested!

mouser, I don’t know what you mean regarding the approach to license keys here at DC. I never used any DC software until after I donated - to be honest I didn't think you could even do that! Maybe you couldn't do that back when I registered; or else I just missed it.

Anyway, if he wants to develop software, then just do it!  :P  If donations aren't cutting it then start charging for his work - I certainly don’t have a problem with that. But when it is given freely I am very appreciative and I show it how I can. But if installing crapware or adware is how he wants to be recompensed then it isn't really offered "free" anymore. My opinion, anyway. I think it is ExifViewer that has no distinction between their paid and free versions other than a 45 second start delay if the program is not registered. Annoying? Yes. But not very. It would have annoyed me more if he had packaged Ebay crap and especially a toolbar - of any kind - with the program. Either make it truly free (read: donation-based), or don’t. But once they insist on adding crap I stop using it.   ;)

Thanks!

wraith,

I don’t know what your company considers "off-limits" but I know that engineering companies I have worked for didn't want employees on the Internet for anything that couldn't be related to their work. In that business everything is client-driven and client reps are often in the building nosing around. If they are being billed for an engineer's time (by the hour of course!) and see them on the web doing something definitely not related to their business there would be a big stink. That was the single biggest reason sites were banned, rather than any real perceived "danger".

....BARRED UNDER COMPANY POLICY ON USAGE OF THE INTERNET, OR TO PREVENT EXCESSIVE DEMAND CONFLICTING WITH CORE BUSINESS ACTIVITIES.

Sounds like they might be after breaches in company policy rather than malware.

Thanks!

I couldn't agree more! The way I try to get around all the tab setting for each new profile is that I have existing profiles that were set up painstakingly, and I right-click and click the "Duplicate" item there. Then the new profile will have the exact same settings and I just have to change the source and destination locations.

Thanks!

LaunchBar Commander / Re: Closet favorite

I love this app too! I don’t use it in a portable way but between this and FARR all my launching needs are perfectly met!

BTW I don’t use a dock but instead I just use the Alt+L hotkey and the pop-up menu. Out of the way but always ready!

Thanks!

I don’t know what has happened to Mobysaurus development - and I certainly hope that all is well with Anderson - but in spite of the lack of development, V.1.0.5.5 seems to be working fine on Windows 7 Home Premium 32-bit here for me.

Thanks!

Curt,

I have Zoner Photo Studio Pro 12 and took a look when it popped up the notification for the ZPS 13 upgrade. I decided to stand pat. Frankly I can't see why they are charging an upgrade price for that version. I didn't see anything listed that I considered worthy of an upgrade, especially a $40 upgrade. Very disappointing.

Thanks!

General Software Discussion / Re: True Launch Bar v5.0
« Last post by J-Mac on January 09, 2011, 09:44 PM »
I find TrueLaunchBar to be indispensible under XP and Vista. Under Win 7 I no longer have any need of it as I have grown to love the new taskbar.

How does the Win 7 taskbar take the place of TLB, which is commonly used as a launcher? I have a few programs pinned on my taskbar in Win 7 but not nearly enough to be that useful. For launching I mostly use FARR and Launchbar Commander.

Thanks!

I'm ambidextrous though I admit I have developed a preference for the right hand. I actually used both hands somewhat equally when I was very young. When I started school I would practice my printing with one hand and then switch to the other when the first got tired! However the Sisters of St. Joseph were convinced that left-handedness was devilish, and so they would use a belt to strap my left hand to my thigh, thus forcing use of my right hand.

(This is why I laugh derisively   ;D ;D ;D   when "waterboarding" is called "torture"; had the Gitmo detainees been subjected to "discipline-by-nun" I would have been much more sympathetic...)

Thanks!

Jim

EDIT: Duhhh... that was my LEFT hand they strapped down....

The question is. Do I now hunt for a second used MX Revolution on eBay (to use on my secondary pc), pay more than it's worth, and then decide I don't like it - again, and finally end up getting a trackball or something else I'll worry about.

Although I don’t use the MX Revo anymore - too damned many have failed on me - I always had a few on hand at my house. I used Web Site Watcher to keep an eye on pricing at Amazon, Newegg, and a couple other sites and only purchased one when the price went below $50. This was back when it was fairly new and very popular and sold normally for ~$90 new. Every once in a while one shop or another would have a sale and I would pick up one or two, depending on how low the price was.

Thanks!

Yeah, I was looking at Outline 4D for its outline features actually, as opposed to its writing features. I am writing scripts for small live acts and while writing the script isn't a problem (yet!) pulling everything together is. Such as props needed, whether or not I have all the needed props or need to procure them, etc. It's the overall picture that is difficult to keep together for each act rather than the writing function itself. Presently I'm using a pretty simple database program, which doesn’t quite meet the needs.

Thanks!

Kind of insane, I'll agree. But then I have to consider what a lot of people who use this type of software are like. Last time I sat in on a workshop, I think there were maybe three out of 150 who weren't using pirated software. Most seemed to think it funny someone actually paid for their copy of Final Draft.

Sad.

Does anyone here think that those who pirate software would be likely to purchase a copy and then request a refund? I don’t think so. I think that only someone seriously considering the program would shell out that much up front. But then again I am probably way off there. Who knows anymore!

Now that sounds more interesting! In that case I might give it a try, though I still HATE to part with my money first and then try to retrieve it if it doesn’t work out.

Thank you.
