Living Room / Re: 35 Beautiful Photography Websites
« Last post by tomos on March 18, 2010, 05:18 AM »
I was disappointed by the article - some of the sites look great in person, but the Smashing article managed to pick out too many stylish-designery-aren't-we-cool pics (with a high percentage of beautiful women involved) - I'm jaded with all that, never was a fan of it particularly, but it's all just so 'let's make this a perfect make-believe world (where we're especially cool)' that doesnt have much to do with reality

maybe that's the point of that direction/style - distraction from reality or something? More like delusion I think - I'll shut up now..
Anyways,
I did get to see some great pics once I went to some of the sites so thanks Zaine

Living Room / Re: When you make your 100'th Post
« Last post by tomos on March 18, 2010, 04:05 AM »
You can do it with AutoHotkey. I found a solution in this thread: http://www.autohotke...orum/topic46323.html

The required code:
~LWin::
   Input,v,L1 M
   If ErrorLevel=Max
      Send, #{%v%}
   else if ErrorLevel=NewInput
     Run, c:\Program Files (x86)\FindAndRunRobot\FindAndRunRobot.exe -show
Return
~LWin Up::
   Input
Return
Obviously set the correct FARR path.

edit: Completely unrelated, but is there a thread to make your 1000th post? ;)

Kasír,
three young guys from Denmark that play mainly traditional Irish music,
this one: "A Trip to Devon" is written by them (with a traditional Bulgarian piece at the end) - best new music I've heard in a while (new to me anyways)

that one reminds me of another traditional group, from Asturias (North Spain) Llan de Cubel - not that piece in particular, but I like that song (La Casa Gris / The Grey House)

edit/ and another nice one (a bit more modern) from Kasír http://www.youtube.c...X2q69C6hAqU&NR=1

or are you saying $10 total ???

Thanks cmpm :Thmbsup:
this is still on my ToDo list :-\
as it's not yet urgent, I'll avoid BenuBird for the moment*. If I dont find any other more lightweight options, I will try it out.

thanks for the other link too - will have a look at that

Had you something specific in mind brotherS ?
I'm not a graphic designer but do have the ability to prepare the necessary

If you're not wanting to spend much, you could keep it simple (I dont have that much time anyways in the next 48 hrs!) - use an appropriate font and do a nice layout (I like portrait for business cards myself - eye catching too) & card can look very good.

Living Room / Re: Using XP System Restore Offline
« Last post by tomos on March 13, 2010, 09:10 AM »
Given the extra info the method I would use to restore the system, (which, personally, I never had any luck with on XP so I removed it from all subsequent installs), would be:

1) Boot from a BartPE/WinPE based CD/drive and copy any important data to another external/internal HDD.
2) Download an XP Home ISO, (supposedly legal if you have a license), and perform an 'Install/Repair in place'.

The XP installer should pick up the existing installation, unless it is severely munged, and give you the option to repair it.

I thought 'repair' didnt work with XP home (well I read that somewhere - after an unsuccessful repair attempt)

I studied programming waaaay back in the 70's (BASIC, COBOL and FORTRAN on an NCR mini coding onto 80-column  punch-cards!) which, while they are certainly not current languages, should give me some structural guidelines. I've also coded in dBase IV and similar (Foxbase etc.) and in  VBasic. In fact, I ran the very first BBS here in town on a 300 baud dialup modem using a Z80 computer running the entire system in interpreted BASIC!

I got offered it on XP here within the last week Eóin - it was ticked by default here btw (de - or maybe it just the fact it was an XP)
I'd be curious to see it, but not curious enough to install it :)

Ironically I've seen advertising for Internet Explorer 8 the first time just this week (on webmail site web.de) - I was using an older version of Opera and it picked up on that & offered me IE - I checked the same site on an uptodate FF & didnt get the add

well speed & memory can be important - e.g. if the scan takes all week you dont want the product ;)
I have Avira AntiVir Premium - seems okay all round with good results in tests in general, but seems to not interact so well with Filebox Extender (stalls a while - XP) but I have it for another 11 months so will stick that out I guess. It has anti-spyware included but I have no idea how good that aspect of it is - either I'm lucky or I surf carefully... or something :-\

I was using keepnote, but now I'm using lyx. You can have it portable on win (LyTeX). Great outliner, and features you don't find in notetakers (tables, equations). Even if you don't ever use it as intended (producing nice latex docs), it's a killer tool. All files are plain text, no vendor lock-in. and autocompletion built-in...

? Can you recommend which to download, with texlive or miktex ?  Miktex was uploaded more recently
  • LyTeX-1.6k-bin.exe   1.6k stable release -- with texlive
  • LyTeX-1.6s-bin.exe   1.6s stable release -- with miktex

Ah the Zip drive... I still have a perfectly functioning drive with about ten 100 and 250 MB disks. I bought the drive because I got fed up of CD-RWs flaking out on me. It's funny now - the media was so expensive relative to its capacity (especially when compared with CD-R/W's) and it was so quickly superseded, first by external 2.5" USB harddrives and then by USB thumbdrives. At the time (2000), I thought they were to coolest thing, though.

Ah, I thought I'd have nothing to contribute here having only started using PC's in 1999, but I had zip drives :D
- first a real blocky one - there were only 100MB disks then (that's all I had anyways) - I'm sure it wasnt able to read the 250MB disk when they came out, so I got that one showing in Crush's pic.

I loved the sound they made as you ejected them !

@Carol

They do respond everything well except the Gui issues. I have never seen any real improvement to the gui all those years. Everything else has been well and steadily improved to certain degree.

Tomos`s remarks also support my dissatisfaction of the Gui issues. It looks like I was not alone in the complainer`s camp

I intend to post about it in their forums, but as I say I've been concentrating on Report window problems (and requests) - when I do post re GUI I'll mention it here (the more people that ask for it, the more chance of a change...)

Updates are constantly being pushed automatically for FH and the plugins. They certainly respond positively to any issues reported.
-Carol Haynes (March 06, 2010, 03:35 AM)
yes,
a few updates already this year. I've been successfully asking for improvements to the Report window (minor bugs & also GUI)
(I was looking for a version history the other day but couldnt find an uptodate one)

I think it would be great for the programme if they improved the GUI - it is very far from user friendly. You might not need the GUI very often but when you do, well it's often a struggle to figure the thing out...

Talking generally:
GUI work seems to be the least favourite improvement made to software in general - but I always find it's top of the list for me (presuming the app basically does what you want). Maybe developers think along the lines of we need new features for an upgrade, but if the app is made more user friendly I would recommend it / plug it a lot more

Couldnt find a thread on this topic - post your good short films/videos here! :)

Edvard posted lately about The Third & The Seventh - Beautiful CG short film

This one below is very worth a look IMO - very different to the above (yet reminds me of it) - about using an old style printing-(letter)-press
