The XYplorer implementation allows 'normal' opening and then using a shortcut keycombo you open the list.
You edit an ini file for the list but it's all made very easy really (& it's a set it once & forget it scenario)

I dont know if that would be possible with AHK but I'd certainly love to see something like it as well!

nudone are you more interested in the actual "Open with" menu or would something like XY implementation suit?

FWIW . . . IDEA: Replacement for Windows 'Open With...' dialogue

You recommended:
quickassociation will do this and more. but it's not free. i bought it because i believe it to be the best for what it does. find it at http://www.pcmag.com...,1895,1654639,00.asp

Another recommendation was Choice Editor - which never worked properly for me on XP, but seemed to work for (some) others
Lanux recommends another which hasnt been updated in a while...

XYPlorer has a super implementation of "open with: menu list of pre-selected programmes" but if you're not using XY it's not much good

heres the download link (not 100% sure will it work for everyone - it's taken from the page Lanux linked to)
http://www.chip.de/d...20fbe748406792a644f0

on starting the install, click on the 'Internet' button
~ You'll have to give some details (look through these shots http://www.chip.de/b...alerie_42862442.html)
~ You'll get a confirmation mail & one with user name & 'Code'
~ You have to give these in during the install (no picture of this step) and again after install

Disclaimer: I havent done this myself ;-)

General Software Discussion / Re: Saving data in fields in pdf forms
« Last post by tomos on May 24, 2010, 06:02 AM »

It's not clear to me from first post if you want to create a file that can be filled & saved in Acrobat, or if you simply want to save what you have typed into the pdf

If it's simply a case of saving what you've typed into a PDF (i.e. simply filling a form, not editing the pdf itself), you can use pdf xchange viewer - there's a portable option to the right of the page

Living Room / Re: Simple way to connect two computers (both XP) ?
« Last post by tomos on May 19, 2010, 07:45 AM »
the direct connection sounds more complicated cause neither PC has a network card

hmm.. you mentioned that "Each PC has one network socket" so it shouldn't be a problem..
Okay, you got me there Lanux :D

Thing is I'm not sure what they are lol (embarrassed laughter) - I use them for the internet connection (broadband) but I presume they could be used for a network style connection
I'll order one of those cables & try it out.

Living Room / Simple way to connect two computers (both XP) ?
« Last post by tomos on May 19, 2010, 06:49 AM »
I've been doing a bit of research and am totally addled by what I've read.

Is there a simple way to connect two computers ? Quick & dirty, I just want to get some files and compare some directories.
Both are with XP, both SP2 - but I do intend to update my main machine to SP3 within the next week (I could do the other one while I'm at it if it would help)

Neither have wireless & the router given by my ISP only has one whachamacallit (same as network) socket. Each PC has one network socket (so I could connect via them)
I do have a Fritzbox router (7170) which isnt in use - I guess that could be an option but again I wouldnt be sure how. Also, my ISP set up the other router so I dont have any of the details there.

As I say, preferably easy easy (pleasy :p) :)

General Software Discussion / Re: What to use to back up 1:1 ?

You seem to know a great deal about synchronization!
How does SFFS compare to FreeFileSync?

that looks nice but is pretty different to SFFS.
It looks like it's intended more for once off or occasional jobs.
SFFS on the other hand, is heavy duty in the sense you can set up a job with almost any imaginable variation possible. Really it's a backup programme, with everything you would expect from a backup prog (& more)

Have a look at their features page (there are two versions, only thing I'd miss in the basic version would be partial file updating - check the purchase page for differences) [see edit!]

[edit] I had missed this:
I should add that the standard version of Super Flexible File Synchronizer doesnt support zip compression,
nor:

It sounds like you want Super Flexible File Synchronizer:
http://www.superflexible.com/

It has a gargantuan amount of options.

gargantuan
adj.: enormous, immense, huge, gigantic
-Babylon

Yes, it sounds as this really may be it.

To get a full impression of the available features, it is recommended to download and try the software and take a direct look at the available options.

I will take it for a (30 days fully featured) spin. Thanks for telling!

there is a Beta of Version 5 on their download page - Darwin was saying a while ago that it was working for him without problem (build 35 now, so it's been worked on a bit). I've downloaded it but unfortunately it's still sitting in my 'Install' folder..)

I used Acronis TrueImage Home 12 to clone my C drive, only to realize that Acronis doesn't offer incremental back ups for to such. A full cloning takes 8 hours.

Hi Curt, I'm not clear there - do you mean Acronis doesnt do incremental - or doesnt offer them to the C drive?
I have Acronis 10 & it can do incremental backups...

A full imaging of 15GB or so takes maybe 10 - 20 mins here. (You  can exclude files (& filetypes) but I dont know can you exclude folders)
Either you have everything (& a lot of it!) on C, or, it's not working as it should if it's taking 8 hours (maybe you have compression set to highest level or something)
I have restored selected files from an image and found it no problem (the restored files can also be copied elsewhere than their original location).

OTOH I can understand your preference for non-proprietary formats but you're gonna need a lot of space for all those uncompressed backups if you do find a solution..

Circle Dock / Re: Greetings and a Tablet PC question. :)
« Last post by tomos on May 15, 2010, 04:10 AM »
Could you clarify:

> As a tablet PC user, I can touch the screen and bring up CD, then touch my photoshop icon to bring up Photoshop.  But once in photoshop, it would be AWESOME to be able to quickly access photoshop specific hot keys.

once in Photoshop you can obviously use Photoshop shortcuts - you must mean some other keys - but to do what exactly?

You say 'Photoshop specific' - if it's not directly related to Circle Dock, you will have a better response posing in the Coding Snacks Forum.

Hi Mouser, trying 2 download "DeatchVideo" from Skrommel's, but all I get is File not found on this server :-(

Can U please fix it?

Thanx Art

Skrommel, the legendary coding snacks coder finally gave in and has recompiled his huge collection of utilities hosted on DonationCoder, but we are still waiting for the new versions to be uploaded on his page -- I think this may be a case where we all need to nag him on the forum to show him how much we appreciate his work.  If you haven't visited it in a while, stop by his section and take a look, and send him a message telling him to update the files already!
-First Post

in the meantime you could use the AHK version (click on the [H] icon below the DetachVideo link & save as a .ahk file). You'll need the AutoHotkey programme as well - if you're not using it & you need help, just ask !

General Software Discussion / Re: SRWare Iron 5.0.380 beta browser
« Last post by tomos on May 08, 2010, 04:32 PM »
just in case there's anyone else like me who hasnt heard of the iron browser, here's some info from
http://www.srware.ne...ware_srware_iron.php

SRWare Iron: The browser of the future - based on the free Sourcecode "Chromium" - without any problems at privacy and security

Google's Web browser Chrome thrilled with an extremely fast site rendering, a sleek design and innovative features.  But it also gets critic from data protection specialists , for reasons such as creating a unique user ID or the submission of entries to Google to generate suggestions. SRWare Iron is a real alternative. The browser is based on the Chromium-source and offers the same features as Chrome - but without the critical points that the privacy concern.

We could therefore create a browser with which you can now use the innovative features without worrying about your privacy.

We want our users to participate in our work and make the browser free to download under the name "SRWare Iron" into the net.

What does Iron makes different? Read here.

General Software Discussion / Re: Review of 7 Cloud Storage Services
« Last post by tomos on May 07, 2010, 06:40 AM »
It strikes me that one major failing of all these Cloud storage systems (for the average home user) is the painfully slow upload speed on ADSL connections.

Backing up 2GB of data at <32kb/s is no fun at all. :(

If you do have better upload speeds you can be limited by the backup site itself
This comparison-test here is a year and a half old now:
The 'winner' - humyo's upload speed was around 350kb/s (if my maths correct)

It would be nice to see a more recent comparison of the basics like the one linked to.

« Last post by tomos on May 06, 2010, 05:40 PM »
@ cyberdiva & CWuestefeld,
have you tried the Dopus forum to see what the problem is with reading the respective folders ?
I get the impression they are fairly responsive with bugs and that sounds like a bug to me...
__________________________

I havent noticed any slow-down in Dopus from v.8 to v.9 myself

Two of the major attractions of Dopus for me are:
~ the ability to save named (tabbed) layouts (sortof like sessionsaver in FF)
~ the fact it has a half decent image viewer (for a file manager at any rate)

I often find there's stuff I'd like to access but it's too hidden away / or difficult to implement / or to find info about. I had great trouble after upgrading even trying to find concrete info about a couple of features that were advertised in Leo's 'intro' (http://nudel.dopus.com/opus9/). But I guess that's the usual 'help file lags behind the software' story which is the same with most software.

Re XYplorer:-
I love using it :) Also, it's great the way it gets updated so often with new features.

As to forums - I cant say I'd have a preference between the two (dopus/xy). I've made a couple of small requests @ XY forums which were very quickly implemented which always makes for a very nice experience

-please try again, tomos! I think you may have clicked another line, the first time, because I cannot replicate this, with Office 2010; it will not accept the code.
I bet they didn't have the restriction in place at the check-out at first, but then changed it since tomos first tried.

I think that is the case as I'm sure it was Office 2010 I tried - I missed my chance !! :)
