General Software Discussion / Secunia PSI moves down the update list
« Last post by Steven Avery on June 18, 2009, 12:15 PM »
Hi Folks,

Thanks Fenix and Grorgy.  Good points on Secunia PSI, note I only said "Also Secunia PSI might be an add to the category." lacking hands-on experience. Now it will move down the update list, and up the down staircase.

Hi Folks,

Thanks kreatorr.  I went for it, mostly because it just seems like a nice, sweet program.  Also I sometimes like to have two file managers open, and while, e.g. Total Commander allows double-instances, a lot of times it is easier to work with two distinct programs. Also things like the favorites toolbar buttons make a lot of sense. (If that is what it is.) I can see at least giving xplorer2 some moderate daily usage.

General Software Discussion / fully free software - Cobian backup
« Last post by Steven Avery on June 18, 2009, 09:51 AM »
Hi Folks,

Thanks, rjbull and 40hz, I'll plan on adding a notepad and remote access section to the top post later.

Cobian Backup
http://www.educ.umu....ian/cobianbackup.htm
"The program is freeware even for commercial use." - Luis Cobian in webforum

There probably will end up being three to five in the backup section that qualify, also the cloud backup possibility comes to play.

Added above, also the open source FileZilla added, there may be a couple of other fully free excellent FTP clients. Also Everything and Locate32 and Stickies and Smart Defrag and Revo Uninstaller and Keynote-NF added.

ZSoft Uninstaller not available in this way.
"I'm bound to the license agreement of Delphi 6 Personal which says that I can't use it for commercial purposes. I don't really know if that means that I can't allow others to use what I create commercially either, but to be on the safe side, I'm not going to..."

Personally to me it does not sound like allowing businesses to use the product is a commercial purpose for the developer, however the decision is his to make.

Hi Folks,

Fully free and excellent are the Piriform products.  In a biz environment CCleaner could be on every puter (it would be nice to disable the registry cleaner though if you are letting others use the program).  Defraggler I like (main issue for me in biz might be whether the super big PST files would ever be done without an overnight run and how to handle that).  Recuva is also available, although you might only install it "on demand". Although it might be handy to have it at the ready installed.

I'll add CCleaner  and Defraggler at time laters on the top post :-).  At this time they are category leaders for fully freeware.

From their forums.
"Yes ccleaner is free for both home and commercial use"

And you remember to untick the tool bar on install.  No trickery involved, simple to do and see.

JavaRa and PureRa added above, Q-Dir moved to top part of post.

Hi Folks,

Programs: Freeware for Commercial Use - Genadij Trimailov
http://tridydotnet.b...-commercial-use.html

7-Zip (file compression utility)
Audacity (sound editor)
AVS DVD Player (dvd player)
CamStudio (screen recorder)
CD Burner XP Pro (cd/dvd burning utility)
ClCl (multiple clipboard management)
Comodo Firewall (firewall)
FreeLauchBar (quick launch replacement)
fSekrit (text encryption in a small exe file) >>
ImgBurn (iso image burning utility)
K-Lite Codec Pack(pack of video codecs)
Media Player Classic (a part of K-Lite Codec Pack)
Notepad++ (notepad replacement)
Paint .NET (image editor) Get Paint.NET!
Screenshot Pilot (screen capture utility)
SlowView (image viewer)
Traffic Meter (monitor the amount of traffic) >>
True Crypt (virtual encrypted hard drive)
UltraVNC (remote desktop control utility)
Virtual Clone Drive (virtual cd/dvd drive)

ImgBurn and CD Burner XP Pro are good to know. ClCl needs a spin, also SlowView (image viewer). Those are the ones that fit more into a general utility package, although the whole list is helpful.

Hi Folks,

  Loaded it for the first time.  I like the look and feel of the program, the fact of the lite version is interesting (not for commercial use though).  Most of my file management stuff is mundane, although that could change.  For $15 I may like to have the program for its nice appearance, to compare features and to have some variety (Total Commander and Free Commander are both excellent, yet both have many differences, and they are not winning all the style contests :) ).

   The xPlorer2 forum chat really just seemed like nice honest back-and-forth, not every program is gonna be like Total Commander where the developer is soooo involved.  Programming is simply not that easy, and the rewards on not that great on such an effort.  The forum does look strong overall.

  So I can see a little back-and-forth usage TC #1 and xPlorer2 #2 and some Free Commander.  And, the cake icing, xPlorer2 Lite being a good recommendation for friends, with some obvious advantages over Free Commander in the no-cost realm.  I didn't see any real lacks on Lite for the home daily user, did I miss any on my skim ?

  Just thinking out loud here.  Will decide in an hour. When I wrote about the freebies, I didn't look that closely at this Lite.

File Managers - 10+ almost absolutely freebies

  Curious - what is the licensing for a single user with home and work puters ?   Per user ?  Per puter ?

Hi Folks,

The Primasoft Disk Analyzer has some bugs, it even showed  the .dll and .exe file totals as negative sizes.  The program had some potential (shows the number of files) even with the old-style look, but not if I can't get sensible numbers.  It looks like it does not handle .extension totals over about 2 gigs.  Yoiks.  Here are two pics that show this, interestingly the second one doesn't even show the negative .exe amount, which shows up in the sort by type.  A bit sloppy from Primasoft (Thurs AM: I sent them a note).

iso is at top.jpg

dll is neg.jpg

The three big file totals are missing at the top .. two are negative size, and you can see one of them at the bottom, the other two are in mid-stream somewhere without a paddle.

Hi Folks,

Naah.. share away on this thread.  We can congeal lists laters if we want.  Let cut-and-paste and a new HTML endeavor be our friend.  The idea here is mostly to assist anybody who has to think about working on 5-10-25 or more PCs. An emphasis on full-freebies but not to exclusion.

btw,  I am learning recently how some PC folks are simply very appreciative when you help clean up and check and give some new tools .. while others holla thru the roof !

Super-bargains go well with super-inexpensive, if there is some super-tool that costs $300 or more and helps for the whole group we might as well share it here, if it is gonna save multi-hours of time and make help good decisions.  I have been pretty surprised about the strength of some network tools, like ManageEngine Desktop Central which seems to be free for up to 10 PCs.  (It works on larger networks but you pick 10 to analyze .. something like that.) Then there are tools like LanSweeper and all these inventory tools.  NirSoft has one NetResView which is neat, shows all the permissions and such.

Throughout though we can also keep an eye on determining which utilities are really free free free, category by category .. e.g. if I was gonna put a fully-free startup program on 15 puters, what is available ?  Dunno, have to check.  That is good stuff to know, a real peace-of-mind when you know no boundaries are stretccchhed.

Shalom,
Steven

Hi Folks,

These two are definitely biz utility related.

WinDirStat (thanks Lashiec for the emphasis)
http://windirstat.info/
"WinDirStat is free software published under the GNU General Public License."

Free Disk Usage Analyzer
http://www.extensoft...p=free_disk_analyzer
"We are so confident that you will love our products, we hope that you will buy the full Extensions package sooner or later, or simply get more use out of Windows and be more happy using it. So enjoy some our individual Extensions absolutely free."
http://www.extensoft.com/?p=home

These are two very fine disk space analyzers that seem to be fully freeware, this is a field were there may be some other goodies.

=======================================================

Extensoft has a couple of individual freeware products, so far that sounds like biz usage ok.
    * Video Converter
    * Screen Capturer
    * Disk Analyzer
    * Extended Task Manager

Video Converter is a specialty app, Screen Capturer I will add to the list above, and Extended Task Manager similarly I will mention above next to DTaskManager.

================================================

Tomos, thanks, I've been wondering about this for awhile, so today I figgered we could hash some of this out here.

HI Folks,

Ahh .. good to know on WinDirStat. Loading it at work now.

btw, Primasoft has an Amigo-2000 calendar/reminder that looks interesting, although I had to go to Softpedia to see the pics. http://www.softpedia...creenshot-33888.html  It has no categories for overlays though.

Added a bit more on FlexTx and Primasoft above.

Hi Folks,

On Wilders we were discussing firewalls and three were said to have free versions for biz use. (I have not checked.)

Filseclab
PC Tools
Comodo

The first two were of some interest to me (not Comodo) however PC Tools I think was bought by Symantec so its situation could easily change in the months ahead.

The anti-virus question is a good one, it is true that there might not be a good, free biz one of substance.  Then we could look for any that are both effective and quite inexpensive.  Might as well allow some other bases.  Similar questions with malware removal and HIPS (including startup managers).

=========================

Oh, this thread is not just for biz use, it can apply to multi-puter home usage.  Clearly the same ones that are ok for biz use are likely okay for your combo of family and test usage.  Although you might have more options, since the "non-commercial" use freeware programs may allow unlimited.  (And your preferred shareware may allow multi-home-and-laptop-puters.)At least you know the programs on this thread should be a good starting point of safety.
That is the main point here, good programs that can be installed .. anywhere .. without $ and copyright and license and ethics backwash.  Secondarily, economic and effective programs in a biz environment (granted you have a whole nother realm there of centralized administration products available, but that is off this range).

Shalom,
Steven

Hi Folks,

My understanding is that System Restore does not always play nice with low-level programs, including image save-restores.  Also it triggers false positive anti-virus stuff.  So to me the only issue is whether to get rid of it completely or leave it at minimum size.

Thus gives us more reasons to avoid its use on a well-kept and well-backed-up puter.  However it does seem to help some of the people some of the time.

Thanks .. I did not know the recycle bin was customizable (makes sense).  Presumably a smaller size handles itself well and simply writes over older stuff if you get too full.  This can be helpful on a tight disk, and I wonder how image programs handle this, well you should probably empty before an image (not that I am an image fan anyway).

Hi Folks,

============================================

List moved to:

fully-free software for biz - the lists !

==============================================

 Goal - freeware and donationware (and maybe some super-inexpensive-ware) utilities for a biz environment.  That can be installed and may be helpful to the network admin and many can stay for the users themselves.

 The DonationCoder programs may apply, we can discuss which ones and how that works in the thread.  I'll leave that to the experts.

  Here are a few that immediately come to mind. I am especially interested in programs that :
 1) Might be picked up for use by the users, or
 2) Will help the network admin when he works on the puter

 ** = added to original post from thread info ... naahh .. too many, taken out.

================================

 Please do not get too concern where you post, although in a light sense now this one is meant more for the free-wheeling discussion, the new one is the reasonably orderly list and new suggestions.

Hi Folks,

Thanks !  Good, solid recommendations, I'll check them out.  Primasoft I didn't even know they have a disk space thing (AutoFTP I knew).  I don't think any of the standard top well-known disk space programs are strong on this extension aspect, so I was in a bit of a quandary.

Well FlexTk (Express, the personal-use freeware) gave me an error because of a file name being too long, a trapped error with a banner announcement, very unusual.

Added:
Express: Support for Long File Names    No
http://www.flexense....flextk/versions.html
So for any real function you have to work with the $50 product, the $150 or the pricey network. So it is gonna have to be real good :) .. like make a good veggie burrito on the side. (Seriously, it might be worth a look .. maybe, if only to see what they think they have ! 30-day trial).

While Primasoft wants more resources in the Win 16 Subsystem to install.  (Note: Ok the readme says the installer is for the old cranky systems, simply copy the files over and make your icon .. done.)

So it is going a smidgen slow.

Found Deals and Discounts / Uniblue - caveat emptor
« Last post by Steven Avery on June 17, 2009, 05:04 AM »
Hi Folks,

  You will find many web horror-stories with the Uniblue products.  Some discussion here on DonationCoder.  Overall, the company is a leading proponent of scareware for their registry cleaner garbage.  (Yes, they inherited some decent software many years back through a purchase, most of the better stuff has been dormant or dropped.)

  Uniblue works heavily through affiliates -- (the affiliates tend to scam through google ads) so be aware of that when reading various techie articles and reviews .. check first if they are an affiliate (we gave a few examples on Web of Trust of Uniblue affiliates shilling for the software).  There is a lot of shill disinformation in the articles and ads, you cannot trust any quotes or references without doing a lot of checking.

  One trick would be to have one program try to push another .. thus a free quite dubious "Speedup" program can be a wedge for popups or scareware methods to foist the dangerous registry cleaner (caution: maybe with automatic recurring billing, common in the registry sham-scam industry, always check) on the unwary.

  Caveat emptor.  Even when free.

Shalom,
Steven

PS.
I appreciate for-free-on-internet a bunch, and have spoken up for them on WOT.  This one I consider simply an error.

PPS.
BlackViper & Advanced SystemCare & Glary Utilities are mentioned in the 4-free thread, all fine, except be careful of any registry cleaner, use with great caution, item by item, if at all.

Hi Folks,

  While Veign looks for a good file folder size program, I want to know which disk space program is really smart in terms of extension size, preferably network capable.  I am deciding what to back up from 17 puters on a network (workgroup) to the cloud and it would be helpful to know that the .pdf takes up this amount, the .doc and .pst like so.  Or on the other hand, it would be nice to see the amount taken by what I don't want to back up, .exe and .dll and such.  (I am not sure yet whether to approach the project on an include or exclude basis, although include is in the lead.)  This is not mission-critical stuff, the biz data is on the PC server and also the minicomputer, and the mini is is now doubly backed up, tape and cloud, the PC server files are over the net (and to a real vault company, using solid software, this is not mozying around). However, the idea that people should just lose all their personal files on a crash or mal-stuff doesn't make a lot of sense, so I want to back up at least the prime-time stuff.

  Most of the disk space programs are not thinking in terms of total size for an extension, one or two I looked at have some capabilities, but not real strong (that was a few nites ago, I will check my notes) ... are any that you have seen real strong ? They don't have to be network capable, especially if freeware.  The PC's are all in one building and I can install.

Hi Folks,

And look at Free Disk Analyzer by Extensoft.
http://www.extensoft...p=free_disk_analyzer

Reviewed by FreewareGenius, doesn't bother with beautiful graphs and artwork and space cadets, very practical and simple, you may find it the easiest to use.

And try to figure out this "no space was freed up".  If on, you can reduce or turn off system restore, it might be using 10% or more of the disk.

Hi Folks

Actually the category "Best Free Task Manager" could possibly be renamed to have "ToDo" in there somewhere, since we often think of task managers as the XP system programs like Anvir Task Manager and DTaskManager (yet another potential category, with those being two of the potentials, along with Process Explorer and System Explorer).

And I want to temper a bit my enthusiasm for Software Informer above, due to some affiliation and history concerns, and I am not in a position to really compare the softwares.  Also Secunia PSI might be an add to the category.  There are some good reviews of these softwares, Gizmo leading the pack with a lot in review, comments and forum.

While there are many good FTP programs, Core FTP might be another one worthy of mention with WinSCP, also Sherrod.  These all seem fairly robust even in freeware versions. Others worthy of compare or mention and Coffee Cup and Cross and many more. (You don't have any alternatives listed to FileZilla).

Shalom,
Steven

Hi Folks,

No one size fits all on image programs.  If this has alternate and sensible file-by-file backup (in case the image fails or you restore to another puter where the OS is installed first) that is a major plus.   Acronis I think also has a "universal image restore" product (restore on any puter) but those tend to be more pricey.  I see every image product from every vendor (freeware or commercial) occasionally gets posts about how the image restore did not take.  So I caution .. anyone who relies on an image backup only .. have a file-by-file function somewhere.

Acronis is definitely top-tier, I do remember criticisms of their support.  Myself .. undecided and considering.

Personally I see image backups more for test environments and some biz environments, preferring the simplicity of selective file-by-file and then the health of a new OS restore in case of a crash.  However they seem to be all the rage these days.  Personally, I usually see an OS lockup or a disk crash as a providential sign that it is time for a new, fresh OS install.

General Software Discussion / personal favourites start page
« Last post by Steven Avery on June 15, 2009, 07:01 AM »
Hi Folks,

  The goal:  A nice, simple categorized Start Page to act as my portal to best sites, daily special, important chores, my main bookmarks.   A Start Page that acts like a bit of a reminder system, and lets me open up say .. DonationCoder, FreewareGenius, Wilders, BitsDuJour, and GiveawayoftheDay in one small categorized group. (Even if it is five clicks). Or make a small category for my software support forums. Or this, and that, and the other.

  Much as I like using Linkman for bookmarks and PIM, and it is the repository for tens of thousands of links, a personal start page with categories of bookmarks would be very nice. (Linkman has Fastlinks and Daily links features, it would be great if they expanded their functionality to a categorized start page !)  So I checked to see what software or web services are available, either on a host or a program that puts the page on your on puter.

  There are tons of social bookmarking and portal sites that do stuff like this, yet they tend to do it in a clumsy, bulky manner.  However maybe one of them can do the job nicely, if you think this can be accomplished with a site like Symbaloo, Netvouz, NetVibes, iGoogle, My Yahoo, myAOL, Diigo/Furl, Flyapp, Eskobo, linkagogo, Homepage Startup, Pageflakes, Only2Clicks, StartAid, Tizmos, Zimbio, Webwag, Widgetop, Backflip, 3x3Links,  or another .. or one of the Firefox extensions like Speed Dial or FastDial or Auto Dial or XMarks .. please share away !  (There should be more than the 9 links on the front page that you will get by those looking like the Opera implementation.)  Some like Symbaloo or Netvouz may have a clean, neat, easy-to-make category-oriented skin, however I haven't seen it yet in a quick net-browse.

    If you simply want to group the "big 50" or 100 or so bookmarks (the ones you glance at daily or frequently) .. and then occasionally make some additions or add or a new category .. they are of little help, at least what I have seen so far.  Oh, importing is not the issue for me, I only want the frequently used bookmarks set up in a special order. An hour or two setup is expected, but should be quick and relatively painless.

  And clearly you could build your own page, that might be the ultimate solution.

 NICETIES

  However you would like to use a service that built in a lot of niceties.  e.g. If your page could have sub-pages (at least one level would be very helpful) if sections could be moved from page to page, if there could be a read-only method for visitors that you could send a link to, if the note function is good, stuff like that, it would help.

=================

  Linkshelf http://www.linkshelf.com/ was mentioned on DonationCoder in 2006, and its entry methods are decent.

My Linkshelf
https://www.donation...dex.php?topic=2015.0

  This site lets you make fairly quickly a clean categorized list, however it lacks a lot of niceties and nothing is happening with it for years, as far as I can tell. Oh, you could set up a second level with an alternate sign-on, a bit of a workaround.

   And, when I tried to figger out where it came from and what it was doing, one site mentions how it comes from a pedigree of a developer who did similar stuff in the porn world.  Making privacy polices problematic (this is hosted by linkshelf) and being a real strain and pain in general to my way of thinking, even if there is no functional connection.

==============

  Favoor has similar functions:

Favoor
http://www.favoor.com/

  However it also has not gone anywhere for years, is less helpful than Linkshelf in some ways, looks as dull as possible and is close to being a nothing.  It does add a sticky note function not in Linkshelf, one of the few features that would be nice to have integrated but can be done in NoteZilla or Stickeis.  I think I may have ended up with someone elses Favoor and when I went into a page to check who is the sign-on I got program warning messages with my "change my settings" on the page.  This is going nowhere.

=============

  Switching to programs that you install, local management, in these cases the resulting page is on your hard disk, although note the note about pop-ups that were in Tidy Favorites.

=============

  Tidy Favorites is more active, with GAOTD and Bits, with Free and Pro (paid) versions.

   I haven't installed it to look at the skins, to see if there is something really tidy and neat available with categories.   If someone has a picture of this working in a real tidy fashion (looking a bit like Linkshelf in simplicity) then I would likely give it a buzz.  However it seems to be more of an alternate bookmark manager (which I do not need) than a clean home page maker. And apparently they are hoping to have subscribers paying $20/yr. (Not a deal-breaker if the program is fantabulous.)

Hi Folks,

This is more a question for the web-dev people here.

SeaGreen Software - Automatically Generate Web Forms
http://www.bitsdujou...e/seagreen-software/

Has anybody looked at the generated code ?  The method, etc ?

Is this something where a good coder would simply have their own personal template anyway and using a 3rd-party generator is cumbersome ?  Or is this a nice addition to save time if you were doing a number of web-pages with forms.

This is a small company, the sincerity is clearly there, the problem is it may be a solution looking for a problem ?

Hi Folks,

 In addition to sorting, Eudora has other simple features that make a changeover no-rush questionable.

 The main one for me is filters, which are quite strong, not so much the reg-ex and stuff like that, but the ability to make them quickly on-the-fly with distinctions for input mode and manual mode (output I don't care much about).  And to review them and find them and modify them. I use a dual-sorting method, the new mail usually goes to special interim spots, and when sorted for permanence the mail goes to another spot.  I likely will not go to another program on Windows unless it equals Eudora's filters in strength and imports them accurately, unless Eudora is hurt too much by a new OS.

  Eudora is also pretty nice on searching.  And it is very stable, both in running as a program and in keeping the mail.  (Housekeeping is minimal, you try to keep mailboxes under about 30K email and you keep the memory boxes like In and Out and Trash smallish and compacted occasionally, which is simple.)

  Security features are quite good, as is the way it handles things like attachments and embedded pictures. And composing HTML mail is very nice, I often use it as my work editor for other projects, since I also know I can find stuff quickly searching.

  The account architecture is excellent for my use, although that varies from person to person and is approached differently in various clients.

  The TBird attempts did not cut it so far.  I have on occasion also looked at The Bat! and maybe Becky and some others.  Good programs all, yet each one has its pecularities and drawbacks, maybe a proprietary format or program glitches or weak HTML composing or viewing. Or mediocre filters.  Or this .. or that.

  Now granted the original Eudora is not going anywhere, it is finito, and those of us who use it would not mind seeing a new strong alternative (sort of like Linkman to Powermarks) but we know there are a lot of pretenders and a lot of good programs that give you trade-offs.  So we wait.

  Oh, the support forums are still very good.  Qualcomm was never very involved in them anyway, and they took the program to stability and then left. (I don't blame them, the pseudo-free Outlook competition was one element.  They are a biggish company with a lot of ups and downs and the revenue model and stream was so-so.)  Personally, while the critics love to harangue at Eudora (e.g. you can't set up windows hither and thither with a super multi-tasking look, although the program multi-tasks fine in its limited way) I think still today, a year or two after the stopping of development, it is in many ways the standard for email clients.

Hi Folks,

  From the Jon Galloway comments, these two notes are worthy of note.

"Nokia N95. Just take a picture with the phone camera (better at max pixel resolution), upload to your PC .jpg's and use OCR software to convert pictures to the text. I use a good old FineReader. The quality almost do not differ from the desktop scanner and takes less time to scan."

Please check out TopOCR, at www.topocr.com .  This is free OCR for your digital camera, it works quite well, and let's you use your cameras on your cellphone as a scanner.  You can save to PDF or other formats, even text to speech and MP3

Hi Folks,

 First, the product mentioned by rjbull.

"load the PDF into Foxit PDF Editor, increasing text size if necessary, and using freeware JOCR to capture and recognize the text.  This works surprisingly well, but JOCR is dependent on Microsoft Office components, which I'd rather avoid if possible."

Rjbull used this after a pre-processing through Fox-it PDF editor, and that is one of many methods.  I wonder if a .pdf editor is the best method for increasing text size, this is a bit hard to automate, I presume you could get the same results with an image editing tool but that Fox-it was easy to use ?  However the editor is a $100 product so for beyond trial that is pricey.

JOCR - Freeware (aka GOCR) - Open Source (2006)
Requires Microsoft Office component - "Microsoft Office Document Imaging" (MODI)
http://jocr.sourceforge.net/
EverRex Software - JCR Freeware
http://home.megapass...ng/Product_JOCR.html
"JOCR requires Microsoft Office 2003 or higher version. If JCOR does not work, please manually install "Micorosoft Office Document Imaging" (MODI) that is included in the setup file of Microsoft Office. You can find MODI under "Office Tools" of the setup file."

=========================================

This next article used MODI more directly through the Microsoft components and stirred tremendous interest, over more than 2 years !  This started with a screenshot to the clipboard using cropper.  (Any improvement if it is sent to a file as a .gif or .jpg or even a .bmp ? .. Dunno.)

Note that OneNote is mentioned a number of time times in the comments, one pointing out that it is only so-so at low res, others seeming to indicate that the OneNote component is the MODI component .. perhaps.  There were many comments about which versions of Office have, or do not have, this component.

These were some of the more interesting comments in general.

"This is not free though, deceptive. The price for Office was in your computer. Many ... come without it." ...

"So much quicker than text bridge."

"One important point that you did not mention for people scanning files instead of pasting them is the .mdi extension.  Use this for ease of transfer of text to MS applications. Unfortunately, either way you export to Word, the accuracy is still not that great ... if you need to edit a document while keeping the document intact, then you'll have to buy a retail version. "

 "It doesn't do well on columns of numbers. "

"Microsoft Office Document Scanning located right underneath the Microsoft O D Imaging. It does it all. It uses your scanner and automactically runs the OCR...then it pasted it directly into the Microsoft O D Imaging. Then I clicked on the Export to Word toolbar button as you suggested and it worked! "

PDF to TXT

  Here are the comments that relate to PDF-to-.txt .  Generally speaking, I'm not sure of the much utility in doing screen capture through PDF (does increasing size help that much ?)  however these relate to the issues in general.

"doing an image capture from the screen of an enlarged image of the PDF, converting that to TIF and using the Office OCR should work just fine.  However, be advised that if the PDF has such security settings, then working around them may be a violation of the owners copyright."

"I was surprised how well this worked on a pdf of a scanned document someone sent me.  Exported from Acrobat as a tiff and ran it through MODI into Word.  Only one spelling error.  If only it could keep formatting..."

"if you want to OCR and entire multipage PDF file, open in Adobe Reader and print using the printer "Microsoft Office Document Image Writer"; this will save a .mdi file and automatically open MS Office Document Imaging, from where you can OCR the entire doc."
