« on: June 28, 2009, 02:01 PM »
Hi Folks,

The thread started here:

And that is the best place for most of the side-threads.
Here is the list updated, now in sections, there were problems in page size before.

Below is also fine for suggestions and questions, once I get the first group of posts in,
with the new groupings.

Here are the groupings for now !

OFFICE & WORD PROCESSING

Jarte
http://www.jarte.com/
"free word processor based on the Microsoft WordPad word processing engine .. expands well beyond the WordPad feature set .. small, portable .. documents are fully compatible with Word and WordPad."
"Carolina Road Software, L.L.C. grants you a license to use this SOFTWARE on any hardware product. "You" means the company, institution, entity or individual installing or using the SOFTWARE."
Jarte Plus is $20 for 1-user & adds background spell checking with AutoCorrect plus a number of other features, mostly more "extras".  Items that a tech user might want for their heavy-use home puter but would not be needed in an office.

AbiWord

AbiWord Mailing Lists
http://www.abisource.com/mailinglists/
"AbiWord is GNU Free Software software, which means that you will always have the freedom to use it, make copies of it, and improve it. You are encouraged to make use of these freedoms and share the program with your family and friends! "

"Angel Writer is a free text editor (like Microsoft Word) allowing you to create impressive documents that contain formatted text, graphics and tables. You can learn how to work with Angel Writer in five minutes since it is very similar to Microsoft Word."
Eula or company contact check needed on commercial use - no apparent limitations, the company has other commercial products, especially Info Angel, a PIM. FOLLOWUP NOTE: Discussion forum indicates so far no response on EULA inquiries.

Atlantis Nova
http://www.atlantisw...ssor.com/en/nova.htm
"Atlantis Nova is very fast, compact, and has a very small memory footprint. But above all,

fully-free software for biz - windows utilities

============================================
WINDOWS UTILITIES

INSTALLER - UNINSTALLERS
SCREEN CAPTURE - CLIPBOARD
CLEANERS - SCHEDULING - MEMORY
ZIP - UTILITY SUITE
PASSWORD REVEALERS - ICONS - DESKTOP - TRAY - GRAPHICS
============================================

SOFTWARE INSTALLATION

ZipInstaller - Nirsoft
http://www.nirsoft.n...t/utils/zipinst.html
"This utility was originally developed to install the utilities in NirSoft Web site, but you can use it for installing utilities and applications from other sources, like the utilities provided in SysInternal Web site, Funduc Software, and many others."

Nothing real complicated there, except the addition of the uninstaller option is very nice, and saving time.  ToDoList, Keynote-NF and JavaRa are examples of programs which afaik do not have their own Microsoft-style installation progrram.  Also many of the "Portable Apps".  Thus this is #1, since you might want to use this for installing some of the other apps.

======================

UNINSTALLER

Revo Uninstaller
http://www.revouninstaller.com/
"Revo Uninstaller is a freeware product and you can use it also in commercial environment according to its License Agreement, which forbids reverse engineering, modifying, removing any trade marks etc." - response to email request

Safarp-"Small And Fast Add/Remove Programs" Open Source - 2005
http://wistinga.online.fr/safarp/
Forums
http://wistinga.sourceforge.net/forums/
"Safarp is a small and fast alternative to the Add or Remove Programs Control Panel applet of Windows 2000/XP"

SPECIALTY UNINSTALLERS

JavaRa - Ra Products
http://raproducts.org/
A specialty tool, cleans up the old Java versions and helps makes sure you are up-to-date.  While not a major issue, it is a nice cleanup and does not have the complications of e.g. .net cleanup attempts.  PureRa is also available, yet I would consider that more a "special use" product so it goes below, otherwise it might change things like folder order that you don't want to change.
"JavaRa is a simple tool that does a simple job: it removes old and redundant versions of the Java Runtime Environment (JRE). ... RaProducts is a website dedicated to bringing you the highest-quality products for your home and office alike. Currently, our software includes JavaRa, PhoneRa, PureRa and PastIconsFlusher."

Automated cleanup tool to remove the .NET Framework 1.0, 1.1, 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5 - Aaron Stebner
http://blogs.msdn.co...06/05/30/611355.aspx
Unlike JavaRa this is not designed as a "run anytime to clean up" tool, but as a help in times of .Net trouble. (Originally I had omitted it, however with proper explanation and caution it might save a lot of headache and solve problems.)

Note: PC Decrapifier is inexpensive for commercial use : ... $20 per "technician" (not per PC) per year. For folks receiving many new computers it may have a place with the few inexpensive products below.  While AppRemover, designed for security tool removals, has a specific commercial license.

SCREEN CAPTURE

Purrint - Screen Capture
http://www.bcheck.net/apps/
"Apps from your close personal friend, bCheck. These are all MS Windows apps, they have zero dependencies and are as small as I could get 'em. Source is supplied for most"

ScreenshotCaptor
- Donationcoder -Mouser
https://www.donation...hotcaptor/index.html
Forum
https://www.donation...index.php?board=34.0

Also Gadwin, MWSnap, PicPack and Greenshot (Screen Capturer from Extensoft also, below, also Screenshot Pilot and Annotation Pilot from Two Pilots), Gipo@ScreenCapture and Screeny may all be fully freeware, based on notes and research.  I happen to like the simplicity of Purrint for giving to office folks, with an easily recognizable system tray icon, although as long as a software has an automatic "Print-key-->Print" configuration (with optional auto-file-save) the extra potential features in other softwares may make them a better one-horse install.

=============

SCREEN TEXT CAPTURE

Textractor - Resplendence Software
http://resplendence.com/textractor
Monitor and capture all text any program writes to the screen
"Textractor is provided free of charge"

SysExporter - NirSoft
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/sysexp.html

SCREEN TEXT CAPTURE - OCR

JOCR - EverRex Software (2006)
http://home.megapass...ng/Product_JOCR.html
"JOCR is a freeware"
http://home.megapass...g/Index_License.html
"JExplorer (and power toys such as JOCR, JMounter, and JCalculator) is a freeware. You are free to use JExplorer at your own risk and free to distribute JExplorer in its original state to your friends, public web site, online service, or BBS without explicitly obtaining the author's permission. There is no charge for any such distribution. Notification would be greatly appreciated though ! ... (continues)"
Note the relationship of JOCR with MODI and we have a separate thread about accomplishing this OCR capture with Microsoft Office products, as well as the web alternatives like Evernote.  Also note that the freeware file manager JExplorer (2006) includes JOCR and JMount, a virtual drive.  JOCR received a positive review from FreewareGenius.

SCREEN WEB PAGE CAPTURE

SiteShoter - NirSoft
http://www.nirsoft.n...site_screenshot.html
Lifehacker
http://lifehacker.co...creenshots-over-time

WebShot
http://www.websitescreenshots.com/
Email from Nathan confirms that free version is ok for commercial use.  Pro version has additional features,
color being the most user-important, however in companies often b & w lasers are the norm.

Firefox extensions mentioned - ScreenGrab - Picnik
Other Firefox extensions of interest.  Screenshot Studio Abduction Snapper
With paid and free versions Page Saver Fireshot

=====================================

VIDEO CAPTURE

CamStudio - Open Source
http://camstudio.org/
http://sourceforge.n.../projects/camstudio/
Forum
http://sourceforge.net/community/forum/
"CamStudio is able to record all screen and audio activity on your computer and create industry-standard AVI video files and using its built-in SWF Producer can turn those AVIs into lean, mean, bandwidth-friendly Streaming Flash videos (SWFs) "

=====================================

SCAN & TIFF --> TEXT OCR

Simple OCR - Simple Software
http://www.simpleocr.com/Info.asp
"Not only is SimpleOCR up to 99% accurate, it is 100% free."
"SimpleOCR works with all fully compliant TWAIN scanners and also accepts input from TIFF files.  "

CLEANERS

CCleaner - Piriform
http://www.ccleaner.com/
"CCleaner is a freeware system optimization, privacy and cleaning tool."
"... like all Piriform products, Defraggler is completely free for both corporate and individual use."
Forum
http://forum.pirifor...ndex.php?showforum=4

Bleachbit - Open Source
http://bleachbit-project.appspot.com/
Forum
http://bleachbit-pro...t.appspot.com/forum/
"The privacy and disk space cleaner for Linux and Windows"
Being fairly new and having a Linux heritage we do not have a lot of reviews and Windows discussion.  One thing .. apparently it does handle a large number of applications.

Free Internet Window Washer - Eusing
http://www.eusing.co...er/Window_Washer.htm
"Free Internet Window Washer is a freeware product, this means that you can download and use it for free. Anyway we will appreciate contributions: we will use collected money to finance new development of Free Internet Window Washer."

PureRa - System Purification Tool
http://raproducts.org/purera.html
"removes files from your computer that other mainstream cleaning programs tend to oversee.
- Config.msi Folder [..Sometimes a Windows Installer package is sloppy..]
- Thumbs.db [.. tiny preview images generated for image files ]
- Iconcache.db [The icons used in Windows are saved in an icon cache]
- .sqm-files [sqm-files are created by MSN Messenger and Windows Live Messenger.]
- Desktop.ini "

TFC - Temp File Cleaner by OldTimer
http://www.geekstogo...ldTimer-file187.html
"TFC (Temp File Cleaner) will clear out all temp folders for all user accounts (temp, IE temp, java, FF, Opera, Chrome, Safari), including Administrator, All Users, LocalService, NetworkService, and any other accounts in the user folder. It also cleans out the %systemroot%\temp folder and checks for .tmp files in the %systemdrive% root folder, %systemroot%, and the system32 folder (both 32bit and 64bit on 64bit OSs)"

TFC may be a good compliment to CCleaner to get to the other temp files of the other users without lots of reduncancy or complication.

A bit strangely wants to have the .exe on the Desktop (shortcut anywhere). And the instructions say:
"You MUST be logged on as an administrator to use this utility. While cleaning the temp files all open applications will be closed and the desktop will disappear. When finished, if any files need to be removed by a reboot you will be asked to reboot. Otherwise the desktop will be restored."

DiskMax - KoshyJohn (AutoIt application)
http://www.koshyjohn...oftware/diskmax.html
Similarly will clean out other user temp files.  And similarly, reading on the web, lacks some configurability as an overall cleaner.

Links and mini-discussion of Cleanup!, ATF-Cleaner (new release planned, per blog) and many other freewares (not all fully freeware) :

WINDOWS SCHEDULING

System Scheduler - Splinterware
"System Scheduler is provided free of charge (no warranties implied whatsoever). You can use System Scheduler at home or for business purposes. It can be redistributed freely but without modification of any kind. It must not be re-sold either by itself or as part of other commercial software."
Forum
http://www.splinterware.com/forum/

Ka-Firetask - Konrad Papala
http://www.konradp.c...retask/pro_index.htm
"none of my freeware has any restrictions, including Ka Firetask. It's 100% free, also in corporate use." (email from Konrad)
Network-aware.

JIT Scheduler 9 - Gibin Software
http://www.gibinsoft.net/
" JIT Scheduler ... is licensed, not sold.. is a freeware. This means, that JIT Scheduler grants you the right to use it free-of-charge/free without any limitations for the number of copies. This Agreement grants a user the following limited, non-exclusive rights: the right to install and use the Software Product... You are not allowed to modify the Software Product or perform disassembling of any kind.You are encouraged to distribute the original, unmodified and integral package freely, in any form and on any media, provided you don't charge any fee for the Software Product."

Gibin has some other software of interest, especially Gipo@DB_Utilities "an easy way to work with different OLE DB- and ODBC-compatible databases and data sources such as Microsoft SQL Server 7.0/2000, Oracle DBMS, Informix, MySQL, DB2, Microsoft Access, dBase, Paradox, FoxPro, Visual FoxPro and many other databases that have OLE DB providers."  License hasn't been checked yet, though, likely it is very similar.

nnCron lite
http://www.nncron.ru/#nncronlt
Forum
http://www.nncron.ru...ms/viewforum.php?f=2
   "* The nnCron LITE program is distributed as freeware.
    * All copyrights to nnCron LITE are exclusively owned by its developer, Nicholas Nemtsev.
    * The nnCron LITE may be freely distributed provided the distribution package is not modified. No person or company may charge a fee for the distribution of nnCron LITE without permission from the copyright holder. The nnCron LITE may be bundled or distributed with any other package without permission of the copyright holder."

PC Inspector Task Manager - Convar
http://www.pc-inspek.../info.htm?Language=1
Apparently only in German so far, likely to expand .. found a Convar license note !
"The full version of PC INSPECTOR™ task manager is made available to you at no cost by "CONVAR – Die Datenretter™". You may use the software at no charge and with no time limitations. You are also allowed to share it with friends, acquaintances and colleagues. Please note that you must accept the following license agreement in order to use the software."
(License agreement is the "no warranty" stuff on the same page).

============================

MEMORY SWEEPING - "Working Set"

CleanMem - PC WinTech - Shane
http://www.pcwintech.com/node/145

MemClean - KoshyJohn
http://www.koshyjohn...ftware/memclean.html

We can avoid the big debates about whether these types of programs are worthwhile.  Your biz folks may have low-memory puters or early OS.  These two look to be fully freeware and are written by techies who share in the forums and have other software and use superior techniques.  Other software may be considered in this group.  (I do have a small concern about whether the name similarity is simply coincidental.)

==========================

ARCHIVE - ZIP

7-Zip
http://www.7-zip.org/
Forum
http://sourceforge.n...m.php?forum_id=45797
"You can use 7-Zip on any computer, including a computer in a commercial organization. You don't need to register or pay for 7-Zip. But you can make a donation to support further development of 7-Zip."

==========================

PASSWORD REVEALERS

Password Revealer - Rekenwonder Software - Source Code included
http://rekenwonder.com/revealer.htm
"Password Revealer is freeware."
"Please note that Password Revealer does NEVER work with the following passwords..."
Note his mini-apps with source code, such as Schedule Control and Member Administration and other utilities.

Asterik Logger - NirSoft
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/astlog.html
"Asterisk Logger - Recover passwords stored behind asterisk (**) characters."

Mail PassView - NirSoft
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/mailpv.html
Repair Tool of the Week: Mail PassView
http://www.technibbl...e-week-mailpassview/
"Mail PassView is a small, freeware and portable tool designed to reveal the password and other account details which you should run before you format the machine."
(Note: these passwords will generally be less mission-criticial, able to be gotten from the ISP.)
Note also from NirSoft in the same style -
    * MessenPass - Recover the passwords of 'Instant Messenger' applications.
    * IE PassView - Recover the passwords of Internet Explorer.
    * Dialupass - Recover VPN/RAS/Dialup passwords
    * Network Password Recovery - Recover Windows XP/Vista network passwords (Credentials file)
The last one being of the most administrative interest.

DISK SPACE - TREE & GRAPH VIEWERS

WinDirStat (thanks Lashiec for the emphasis)
http://windirstat.info/
"WinDirStat is free software published under the GNU General Public License."
Email to owner, user defined cleanup (and more) function, shows extension totals for drives, all local drives feature, folder %, top 50 files, does not show individual files.

Free Disk Usage Analyzer
http://www.extensoft...p=free_disk_analyzer
"We are so confident that you will love our products, we hope that you will buy the full Extensions package sooner or later, or simply get more use out of Windows and be more happy using it. So enjoy some our individual Extensions absolutely free."
http://www.extensoft.com/?p=home
Files or filters.  Rather than extensions, has a pre-defined non-configurable filter for file type groups. No fancy charts or graphs,  one "folder to disk" comparison.

JDiskReport
http://www.jgoodies....iskreport/index.html
"This is ad-free uncrippled no-charge binary multi-platform software that never expires."
A very pleasant Java program with themes and directory excludes and good features like top 50 files and modified date analysis and toggles from two graphs to list, one custom command, extension totals shown for folder and directory yet no filtering or sorting by extension.

Only WinDirStat of these three has the ability to sort the individual files by extension, although it does not show the individual files.

So for flat-view file-filtered viewing Free Commander is superior, and may be used in tandem.  Here are some more.

Yes, we are including a lot of defragmenters, there is so much personal variation in preference, each one has strong points, with how visual you want, background functioning, placement issues, techie reboot features, pausing, speed, handling huge files in a timely fashion, how to handle locked .pst, picking individual files, etc.

Auslogics Disk Defrag
http://www.auslogics...ware/disk-defrag/faq (no forums)
"Disk Defrag is absolutely free of charge for home and corporate users alike. We believe that Auslogics Disk Defrag is a great alternative to Windows own underpowered defragmentation utility and it should stay free."
Auslogics may be the fastest, lightest (followed by Defraggler, which has some more features, since they are not do file placement 'optimization' oriented).

Note: Another Auslogics freeware is their registry cleaner, a category that I find hard to take seriously.  (In fact, I think the main issue with CCleaner is seeing if their is a way to disable the registry cleaner function.)  Auslogics does have a registry defrag (below) and a system info - "Last Freeware Version".

FBackup
http://www.fbackup.com/
Forum
http://www.fbackup.com/forum/
"FREE. Reliable. No nags. FBackup is a backup software free for both commercial and personal use." From the folks who also have Backup4all as the commercial backup software.  Plus - uses extensive Backup4all plugins.  Since Softland distributes/markets their backup products separately, there is no easy-access compare sheet, the FBackup page says about Backup4all : "Backs up to FTP, DVD, or other removable media. Keeps different file versions, does incremental and differential backups, uses AES encryption, has the ability to pause/resume the backup and offers many more features." .. these features are likely what is not in FBackup.

Comodo Backup
http://forums.comodo...776.0.html;msg280048
"Comodo Backup is free for use in personal, educational and commercial environments. There are no licenses required, nor are there any subscriptions."
Note however that some of use do not use Comodo products due to the issues around the toolbar install on their CIS product. At the very least, if you use their software,be very careful to uncheck any toolbar checked boxes.   I only put them here because it is possible that they have some significant features in the backup software not in the products above, and some folks see the whole toolbar thing with less negative residue, since Comodo has a history of some good freeware products.

BackUpTime- Cezeo
http://www.backuptime.com/
http://www.cezeo.com...products/backuptime/
"Anyone may use this software because its free ... BackUpTime has become the backup utility of choice for large and small businesses, freelancers, students, IT professionals, designers, accountants ..."  One place they call it a "Fully functional trial version". Mentions a 2 GB Zip limitation, perhaps all backups are to .zip.  Did not find any handy reviews of BackUpTime, appears to be the light version of Backup Platinum. Platinum is described as "Advanced BackUp software with FTP, CD/DVD and Encryption support! and is probably the SoftLogica product, so maybe the same company ?

Other Cezeo free products include a Disk Redactor wipe utility, a PasswordsGuru and two Network products, Netsend and Network Info Requestor.

Spiceworks forum discussion
http://community.spi...orks.com/topic/31510

Note:
This section can be so important that I would like to add a couple of the major features, especially the target file types and any GB limitation.  e.g. DFIncBackup has a fully freeware backup with a 2GB Zip file limitation, Uranium Backup has a freeware (not sure if fully) with a 4Gb Zip backup.  These types of backup limitations are of less interest, especially if the next version up is $$. (Another one being researched is SE Backup by Simply Engineering. Restore (network server capable) is an open-source enterprise that is dormant, no active developement. Bonkey is recent open source, not sure if active. And Areca is an open-source that may well qualify.)

The server backups should all be in the Network area.

Cloud backups could use a little mini-section.  I have found the DriveHQ interface great for dual-pane file manager small-file xfer (50mg a day) .. something the user might appreciate for either extra backup or home use.

"Commercial Licensing: Businesses and enterprises who wish to incorporate a modified version of OpenVPN Software into an appliance for re-distribution and keep those modifications proprietary must license a commercial version of OpenVPN."
"OpenVPN is a full-featured open source SSL VPN solution that accommodates a wide range of configurations, including remote access, site-to-site VPNs, Wi-Fi security, and enterprise-scale remote access solutions with load balancing, failover, and fine-grained access-controls"

In the paid yet reasonable realm,
Techinline -http://www.techinline.com/
is worth a note with a monthly plan, or $20 for five session. $4 to support a client or friend can make some sense.

This firewall does have some HIPS functionality.
Will new PC Tools owner Symantec keep this policy ?

Webroot Desktop Firewall
http://www.webroot.c...desktopfirewall.html
(Confirmed fully freeware on phone call only.)

Filseclab is also apparently free for all use, however the Wilder's thread indicates that while the firewall is serviceable the software  has been effectively abandoned (source code is for sale).  And a new rewrite, Vista-compatible, is forthcoming.  Unclear whether the free aspect will remain at that time.

Questions about Antivir Rescue System
http://forum.avira.c...d&threadID=71314
"1) Is it free of charge for commercial use or only for personal non-commercial use?"
"1) It's free to use in any environment. Please take a look at AVIRA_EULA.txt under the licenses folder of the CD for more details."

This will likely apply to the group of tools above, allowing for free use in a commercial environment (likely with limitations on modifying, removing copyright, charging, bundling without approval and such).

======================================

There are a few such tools from vendors, often with no easily-visible specifics about license on the web-blurb.  For now we are including Avira because of the "for all those experiencing" wording.  (Additional confirmation now added above.)

In addition to being able to remove a large amount of the most common and current malware, ComboFix also displays a report that can be used by trained helpers to remove malware that is not automatically removed by the program. You should not run ComboFix unless you are specifically asked to by a helper. Also, due to the power of this tool it is strongly advised that you do not attempt to act upon any of the information displayed by ComboFix without supervision from someone who has been properly trained."

fully-free software for biz - Startup, Shutdown, Process Managers
« Reply #7 on: June 28, 2009, 02:17 PM »

============================================
WINDOWS UTILITIES

STARTUP -   SHUTDOWN & RESTART -
PROCESS & TASK MANAGER  & TERMINATION
============================================

STARTUP MANAGERS

Startup Control Panel and StartupMonitor - Mike Lin
http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml
http://www.mlin.net/StartupMonitor.shtml
Startup Selector
http://mlin.net/other.shtml
Google Groups Forum (2007-current)
http://groups.google.com/group/mlin_ne
(Although started by Mike Lin and active today, not sure when he last monitored the forum.)

An important category for business install, where afaik the well-known Lite programs are generally not fully freeware. Note:There are a number of programs with general utilities that have some limited Startup functionality and a shortcut to msconfig is always an alternative.

Autoruns - Sysinternals
http://technet.micro...ernals/bb963902.aspx
Forum
http://forum.sysinte...um_topics.asp?FID=16

WhatInStartup - NirSoft
http://www.nirsoft.n..._run_in_startup.html
"Disable/enable/delete programs at Windows startup "
"This utility is released as freeware. You are allowed to freely distribute this utility via floppy disk, CD-ROM, Internet, or in any other way, as long as you don't charge anything for this. If you distribute this utility, you must include all files in the distribution package, without any modification ! "

==========================================================

PROCESS AND TASK MANAGERS

DTaskManager
http://dimio.altervista.org/eng/
"All my programs are completely free, and will  always remain free .. any donation small or large, will be welcome (and gratefully appreciated!"
I like this as the actual Task Manager replacement because it is so much like the Windows Task Manager in look and feel, simply much better, while for example the Sysinternals Process Explorer takes more attention.

System Explorer
http://systemexplorer.mistergroup.org/
"Licensing: SystemExplorer is FREE for personal and commercial use!"
(Donation appreciated)

Process Explorer - Sysinternals
http://technet.micro...ernals/bb896653.aspx
Forum
http://forum.sysinte...rum_topics.asp?FID=2
And other Sysinternal softwares - this one fits well here

** This next is a Wilder's discussion special **

Eset SysInspector
http://www.eset.com/...oad/sysinspector.php
http://kb.eset.com/e...at=ESI&actp=LIST
"ESET SysInspector is a free, state-of-the-art diagnostic tool for Windows NT-based systems."
This note at Misertech:
http://www.misertech...ostic-security-tool/
"SysInspector works as an excellent diagnostic tool for identifying potential problem areas on a Windows computer....  While released as freeware, I was unable to find any specific limitations for commercial use in the license. "
Eset Forums on Wilders (very favorable comments on some threads, too)
http://www.wildersse...orumdisplay.php?f=15

Free Extended Task Manager - Extensoft
http://www.extensoft...?p=free_task_manager
Forums
http://www.extensoft...3&p=forum_topics
(However note the thread about buggyness - plan to drop this to a second tier.)

=============================

PROCESS TERMINATION - FILE UNLOCK AND DELETION

ProcessKO
http://www.softwareo...e=Freeware/ProcessKO

LockHunter - Crystal Rich
http://www.lockhunter.com/
"LockHunter is a foolproof file unlocker. It is a free tool to delete files blocked by something you do not know ... So if you like LockHunter and it helps you in your work consider donating any amount of money to show the authors your appreciation. "

Kill Process - Roger Kulläng
http://orangelampsof...ucts_killprocess.php
"All applications developed by Orange Lamp Software Solutions are today totally free of use ... Any donation size if accepted."

Killbox
http://www.killbox.net/

OpenedFilesView - Nirsoft
http://www.nirsoft.n...ened_files_view.html

WhoLockMe - Dr. Hoiby
http://www.dr-hoiby.com/WhoLockMe/
An exception to our not getting involved in Explorer extensions ! Dr. Hoiby has a number of freeware tools.

Advanced Process Termination - Diamond CS
http://www.diamondcs...vancedseries/apt.php
This company though is reported as dormant a long time at Wilders, so be careful about any purchase products.

UnLock IT - Emco
http://www.emco.is/p...lock-it/features.php
MoveOnBoot - Emco
http://www.emco.is/p...on-boot/features.php
EULA/author check would be helpful.

GiPo@MoveOnBoot - Gibin Software - Gipo@FileUtilties
http://www.gibinsoft...s/fileutil/index.htm

Notes -

Unlocker
http://ccollomb.free.fr/unlocker/
One of the top programs, 32-bit, howeer reported to install an ebay program even if you uncheck, discussed on DC, Wilders and elsewhere, with lots of back and forth, so caution if you use. Also portableapps is working with a beta and forum discussion and that may be the safest no-hassle continuation. The Unlocker site does have a nice graph with 20 programs and their features (information a bit stale) designed to be pro-Unlocker, and nicely including urls to many products.

Malwarebyte's File Assassin, and other freeware utilities from MB like RegAssasin, biz user contacts their corporate support.
LockedFileWizard - Registrations are required for daily or professional uses.
Note that Process Explorer and HijackThis also get a number of recommendations as file unlockers/process terminators.

I will kill thee a hundred and fifty ways...freely

Excellent article .. note also the section on Linux Live CD's

A bit different, shutting down all but essential processes.

PC Mag had this .. the same ?

Caution: noting that some folks have problems with these utilities, it may be simpler to just reboot.

As with Screen Capture, we have a wealth of choices.

AMP WinOff (solid Lifehacker ref), Quick Shutdown (Shatran Software)  A.F.1-4 (Alex Fauland), Shutdown Scheduler (SDS) by Damian Pasternak, Simple Shutdown Timer by Shane of PCWinTech/Cleanmem, Shutdown PC, Shutdown Monster, Direct Shutdown and Shutdown After may be fully freeware, listed vaguely in order of interest.

And definitely fully freeware are Manage PC Shutdown (Spanish website, Ghacks review), Timed Shutdown by Tinnes, Auto Shutdown by Konrad Papala, Auto Shutdown by VCL Developer (Open Source, sShutdown (skin interface, by Shedko), Shutdown Machine and Mini Shut Down Utilities (MSDU-2004).

While Shutter by den4b (also ReNamer, Hasher ,CPUMon, Hooker) has a Creative Commons license, and you write and request or negotiate. For Shutdown Tool by Koma a donation of your choice is required for commercial use.

Quite a roundup, the whole panoply of the freeware world.

DBTools Manager

Forums
http://www.dbtools.com.br/EN/forums/
Freeware, only in a limited non-commercial Standard edition, however a full-use tool (Professional Enterprise Editions) for a database on a server for about $70 to $130.  Apparently there are no "per seat" or run-time or number of application concerns.

Smashing Magazine - Paul Andrews
http://www.smashingm...ment-tools-round-up/
"In the overview below we present some of the most useful and most popular MySQL Admin and Development Tools for Mac, Windows and Linux, for beginners and for professionals. Among other tools we feature phpMyAdmin, MySQL Workbench, HeidiSQL and SequelPro"
Also Aqua Data Studio, SQLyog, MYSQL Front, EMS SQL Manager, Navicat Lite MySQL Admin Tool, DreamCoder for MySQL, Toad MySQL, SQL Buddy (Web-app) and four more.  Quite a round-up.

======

We will need more information as to which tools allow for full use and deployment in a commercial environment free or very low cost.  For now, here is an article with some sharp insight.

Readers suggest – best SQLite tools digest
http://www.rarst.net...ftware/sqlite-tools/

From his summary we will include here:

AnySQL Maestro
http://www.sqlmaestr...ucts/anysql/maestro/
Forum
http://www.sqlmaestro.com/support/

And if this leads to a developers purchase to augment placing custom apps for free on multiple puters, the salient consideration is that there is no "per seat" cost.  Also for consideration, commercial database tools with a free runtime .exe or environment (ie. one cost only, not per seat, without having to buy a super-$$ special developer's version to create the runtimes).

Access To MSSQL

"Access to MySQL is a small program that will convert Microsoft Access Databases to MySQL ... Please make a donation to keep the wheels turning for the Bullzip products. Even small donations help."
Note also that the Dataceptor product, for bringing MYSQL to a web-site, has "Personal licenses are free." while commercial licenses are steep, $900.

"to backup the registry, as well as providing an auto-backup capability, for example at Windows startup. NTREGOPT -NT Registry Optimizer - Lars Hederer
http://www.larsheder...e.t-online.de/erunt/
"You should use the NTREGOPT utility regularly, but especially after installing or uninstalling a program, to minimize the size of the registry files and optimize registry access .. the program does NOT change the contents of the registry in
any way, nor does it physically defrag the registry files on the drive (as the PageDefrag program from SysInternals does). The optimization done by NTREGOPT is simply compacting the registry hives to the minimum size possible."

"Free Registry Defrag is a freeware product, this means that you can download and use it for free. Anyway we will appreciate contributions: we will use collected money to finance new development of Free Registry Defrag."
"optimizes registry by removing gaps, fragments and wasted space in Windows registry files... nor does it physically defrag the registry files on the drive. The optimization is simply compacting the registry hives to the minimum size possible. " (Similar function to NTREGOPT, simiilar wording too.)

Auslogics Registry Defrag - Last Freeware Version - (no to Ask Toolbar install)
http://www.321downlo...Freeware/page38.html
This compacts the hives and defrags the file.
"Is their any legal or ethical problem with using your last freeware version of the Registry Defrag ? .... No specific problems, but we decided not to provide too many free software as we still need to get some revenue in order to produce new software" (correspondence).  On another free product on their site: "Question: Is it really free? Answer: Yes, it is. No hidden costs, no viruses, no spyware."

Auslogics and Eusing also have free registry cleaners (as did CCleaner above).  Since that is a largely unnecessary and hazardous category, it is not ready to have a section yet.

Be awares, even the compacting and defragmenting options have techies who feel that they are either potentially hazardous (there is at least one such thread on the Sysinternals forum). And maybe of little utility (defragmenting, which would occur at boot).  Thus Erunt is the one stand-out tool in this section. In using the other tools, unless you are personally very confident in the tool and use, use Erunt with a UBCD4-type disk handy, and/or imaging, before use.  Similar with the partition software.  The last thing you want to do is create a problem.

BooZet has a doozy-nice program here, you can have all those pesky video and ethernet and other drivers that you know actually work on your system backed up in various ways and lists, including .. a simple and strong .exe reinstall where you see before selecting.

In addition, ServiWin allows you to easily stop, start, restart, pause, and continue service or driver, change the startup type of service or driver (automatic, manual, disabled, boot or system), save the list of services and drivers to file, or view HTML report of installed services/drivers in your default browser."

Caution: In this section, Nirsoft is linking to a not-recommended pair of utilities.  Driver Checker and Driver Detective, which can charge you for their services while automatically dangerously "updating" drivers (rules of thumb, if it is working good, an update is not needed, and if an update is wanted, do it by hand yourself from the vendor. Driver Detective also sets off alarm bells on my Avira).

UBCD4 (Ultimate Boot CD for Windows)
http://www.ubcd4win.com/
List of Tools
http://www.ubcd4win.com/contents.htm
Forums
http://www.ubcd4win.com/forum/

"UBCD4Win is a bootable recovery CD that contains software used for repairing, restoring, or diagnosing almost any computer problem. Our goal is to be the most complete and easy to use free computer diagnostic tool. Almost all software included in UBCD4Win are freeware utilities for Windows®. Some of the tools included are "free for personal use" copies so users need to respect these licenses. A few of the tools included in UBCD4Win are paid for and licensed software owned by UBCD4win. On occasion we work with software companies/authors for permission to include their software in our download or have requested their software better support PE. Users can freely share copies of UBCD4Win with friends but selling UBCD4Win for a profit is not acceptable. We have worked hard for many years helping people for free with this project, others should not make money from our hard work."

This helped me twice on a recent XP reinstall, first by having Free Commander ready for a post-XP save (the included backup tools are more in the imaging realm, FC works excellently for a simple ad hoc backup) then when I bungled the partitioning Test Disk let me easily change an incorrect primary partition to unprimary, getting rid of an 'invalid partition table' problem.. Lots of programs and tools are included, some more of which deserve their own special note. Very strong out of the box, no custom tailoring required, as long as your disk puter boots from CD you can go to town.  On one recent Lifehacker comment, TeamViewer (free non-commercial use program) was mentioned as a custom-tailor add-on, with support.  An excellent idea if you have to support someone remotely, to add an easy-use remote program.

ACCOUNTING

Microsoft Office Accounting Express (good find 40hz)
http://www.ideawins.com/Default.aspx
Professional is a $200 software, however Express is said to be fully functional for many needs. You would want to compare this to the inexpensive shareware products like AceMoney, MoneyDance and the online products, and the freeware Gnucash. This is one area where you might consider the savings of say $30 to be rather minor, however if MOAE is a polished and fine product, many will want to use. Be sure to look over the version feature comparison.

And defining what "commercial" use is probably a "I know it when I see it" definition. For example, there was a business using PP as an automated process to continually delete 100s of their inboxes. That's commercialization."

These are two very fine softwares, actively supported, many biz-office users will appreciate one on their desk.  The only way to tell which one is more appropriate for a user is reading specs, looking at pics and your own comparison.

BIZ-WARE - Crème de la Crème
===============

And there are a few softwares that are significant and whose cost is rather nominal for use.  Some of those will be highlighted here.  These may be worthwhile even in the budget-minded company that is avoiding multiple software registrations.

Companies are often criticized for this, yet dozens of packages can end up being quite a hefty sum, along with various annoyances. One purpose of this list is as a whole largely those excellent softwares that do not need any IT-accounting $ approval, and where the legal-ethics contingent rest comfortably, yet the software itself may be of solid company help.

In this little sub-section we will list those few in-betweeners, light cost, yet truly significant function.

One purpose here is to see at a glance what type of $ would be needed.

================================

Spyware Blaster - JavaCool
http://www.javacools.../spywareblaster.html
Forum
http://www.wildersse...orumdisplay.php?f=23
10 PC Small Business Multi-Pack - $80/yr
http://www.javacools...oupdate.html#Pricing
Network Version - $300 for up to 29 seats
http://www.javacools...om/sbnvpurchase.html

In home use this is completely free, and $10 a year, very reasonable, if you want automatic updates.  The biz user is expected to register for the automatic updates at a slightly lower price than the $10/yr, per seat.

===============================

Next there are some that are so significant that they will be listed even if cost is "regular".  At least these tools are must-be-prepared.

================================

Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware
http://malwarebytes.org/

While this may not be super-inexpensive, this is so good that you may want to have some method of use on almost any PC network.  Just this AM at work a bogus "System Security" program was harassing a user .. the solution - Malwarebytes (and I needed Safe Mode) as recommended in Bleeping Computer and others.  Excellent diagnosis, and there is another on the same high level.

SUPERAntiSpyware
http://www.superantispyware.com/

Some pricing info on these two to be added later, probably Spybot Search & Destroy also.

================================

Later this section may move to its own thread.

SOFTWARE INVENTORY - VERSION UPDATES
SYSINFO
HARDWARE DIAGNOSTICS
MONITOR TEST, SET & FIX
======================================================

SOFTWARE INVENTORY

Installed Program Printer
http://www.judge-software.co.uk/
Simple list of registry-based installs, perhaps this is done as simply in some of the utility suites and system info programs.  Who does the best list including direct (non-registry) installs and maybe including extra info ? A helpful tool, so even the better one-trick pony may be fine.

===================================

UPDATE VERSION NOTIFIERS

Update Notifier
http://cleansofts.org/

Update Checker - File Hippo (uses Net 2.0)
http://www.filehippo.com/updatechecker/

These programs will generally be ok, free in biz, and can be more important than to the tech user who keeps himself more up-to-date, I am including two for now which afaik have not had crapware and similar problems.  Should check which is the best network capable, combined with network software inventory.

Lunarsoft is quite impressive in understanding some of the Microsoft XP fixes, I recently posted there when I had a permission lock-up after an evening IE8 update .. that turned out to be firewall related.  Their software and savvy and helpfulness is kewl.

You may want to check out their Anti-Malware Toolkit .. although like Hitman Pro it is unlikely to really be ok as fully free for commercial use, since it is using various other softwares.

And UltraEdit can be considered the programmer's commercial package leader, with EditPlus having many fans as well. Since it is unlikely that everyone in your company will need a programmer's editor, the pricing situation may still be light.  E-Editor is also well liked, and has at least a partial open source direction, so that part of the project may be added to this list.

HOSTS FILE and BROWSING RESTRICTION SOFTWARE & LISTS
===============================================

As the decision of whether to employ any host file or blacklist browsing restrictions on sites is quite difficult, with its own politics between resources and possible compications (with some of the freeware software being linked to the  lists offerred), the whole section is now separated from the security section and placed here.

Bluetack, the next section, is simply one example .. quite hefty with the software that comes with, maybe too complex and hefty. MVPS and HPGuru are others, and may get their own listing.  Also you may decide to work this through an Untangle or Spiceworks or appliance method, if applicable.  The theory is that prevention is far superior to treatment. The problem is that the cat-and-mouse game with the malware guys is quite complex, and hosts files were more designed for blocking ad servers than malware-contents.

This combines simple notes & PIM with home server, an interesting concept. However it does not seem to be discussed in the Cobian forum.  I noticed that the only security was by IP#, not password. So if you open up the server to a future library stop, it could be too open, unless you had other internal firewall security.

MISCELLANEOUS AND NOTES-DISCUSSION
====================================================

This post is left available for any packages that we simply have not figured out a category !
And special general notes and discussion.

=================================
DONATIONCODER
=================================

And the DonationCoder software is a bit of a hybrid in terms of this list.  A low-cost commercial license is expected (appreciated, required) on a real corporate-enterprise biz usage, yet the home user and light small business this is optional.  So if we work in a medium-larger company, we can install a few programs where we work for our use, and then if it expands to new usage by others, request the site or multi-license.

Mouser gave the explanation on this page.
https://www.donation...x.php?topic=18813.25

Though we don't make too big a deal about it, the official DonationCoder policy about commercial business uses is described here:
https://www.donation...r.com/Help/entry/23/

It basically says:
"Our software is free/donationware for personal use.  If you are running your own small home business, we consider that the same thing (as fellow voyagers in the world of small home businesses we know how hard it can be).

But if you are running a real business with more than one or two non-family employees, we do expect you to purchase a Site/Business License for the program you will be using.

Note: If you are simply an individual using the program at work, it doesn't matter if you are a member of a large business -- you do not need a formal commercial license (unless the program specifically says a commercial license is required for all profit making use).  Commercial Licenses are normally intended for the situation where many people at your business all use the program."

In other words, if you are a larger company that wants to install the software on many pcs, you should get a commercial license.  Otherwise, no worries.

====================================================
PROLIFIC PACKAGES - PROVIDERS PAR EXCELLENCE
====================================================

NIRSOFT          (Nir Sofer)
http://www.nirsoft.net/
http://www.nirsoft.net/faq.html
"A: When I say that my software is for "non-commercial use", I mean that you are not allowed to make profit from my software. You are allowed to freely use my software in your work environment for serving the internal needs of the company or for your own personal use. You can also offer my software to your customers, as long as you don't charge your customers for using my software, and as long as your customers know that my software is freeware and available to download from NirSoft Web site. Government agencies are also allowed to use my software without restrictions.
However, you are not allowed to:
    * Include my software as a part of commercial software package.
    * Charge your customer for a service provided by using my software. For example: You are not allowed to recover the password of your customer by using my password-recovery tools, and then charge your customer for password-recovery service. :"

What we have above in place so far.

ZipInstaller
WhatInStartup
MyEventViewer

More later about these many utilities, the smaller ones here, the category ones as additions to their spots above.

=========================================

SYSINTERNALS (Microsoft, Mark Russinovich)
http://technet.micro...ternals/default.aspx
"Whether you’re an IT Pro or a developer, you’ll find Sysinternals utilities to help you manage, troubleshoot and diagnose your Windows systems and applications."
Forums
http://forum.sysinternals.com/

Sysinternals Live
http://live.sysinternals.com/
Sysinternals Live is a service that enables you to execute Sysinternals tools directly from the Web without hunting for and manually downloading them.

So far above:

Autoruns
Process Explorer
Disk Usage
PageDefrag

=========================================

ROADKIL
http://www.roadkil.net/
"This site is my collection of applications which I provide free of charge to the internet community
.  Please feel free to use any of the applications on this site and distribute them to anyone you think might find them useful"
Forums
http://forums.roadkil.net/

Utilities in 9 sections, here is the "Disk Utilities" group.
Roadkil's Boot Builder
Roadkil's Disk Image
Roadkil's Disk Speed
Roadkil's Disk Wipe
Roadkil's Raw Copy
Roadkil's Sector Editor

====================================================

Note the WSCC package is for installing NirSoft and Sysinternals, and Roadkil has been a suggested addition.

WSCC - Windows System Control Center
http://www.kls-soft....om/freeware/wscc.php
"WSCC is a free, portable program that allows you to install, update, execute and organize the utilities from various system utility suites. WSCC is only an interface, you need to download and install the utilities separately. Alternatively, WSCC can use the http protocol to download and run the programs. The included Update Manager can check for newer versions of the utilities already installed and can download and install the missing items. The setup packages are downloaded from the author's website!"

The WSCC developer, KLS has a very competent shareware file backup software. One suggestion was for them to consider adding the Roadkil utilities to the Control Center.

=======================================
ABANDONWARE
=======================================

Reluctant to be included above, hard to justify to the biz-bureaucracy, yet hard to omit if the software package still meets a special need excellently, and has a cadre of dedicated users.

NetDrive

NetDrive - Browse FTP File Structures in Virtual Explorer-style Drives

Abandonware and WebDrive
"NetDrive was created by Novell Networks. It is abandonware, which - if you want to get technical - is not freeware. Novell abandoned the NetDrive software and opted for the very similar and expensive WebDrive. I’ve tried WebDrive and concluded that NetDrive was good enough and got the job done."
"From the NetDrive.exe - Novell Cool Solutions: Question & Answer page, Novell tells us this:To find a download, search for netdrive.exe on the Web. Due to licensing issues, it is not a download from Novell.com."
