Clipboard Help+Spell / Re: Case Change Not Registered on Clipboard
« Last post by tomos on May 09, 2018, 12:58 PM »
if I went in there to reformat the text, I probably want to do something with it right away, like oh, I don't know... paste it?  ;)
if you use the Quick-Paste menu you can paste it straight away, multiple times if you want.
e.g. I just copied You can still use bulletin board from this page and want to paste it in title case:
Ctrl+Alt+Q [default customisable hotkey for quick-paste menu] > T [shows formatting sub-menu] > 4 [for 'Title Case']
will paste the last copied clip as:
You Can Still Use Bulletin Board

Notes:
  • It is not re-saved to the CHS clipboard with the new formatting, so if I paste something else and want to then paste the formatted clip again, I will have to reapply the formatting. Seems more logical to me that it would be saved with new formatting as a new clip in the CHS clipboard.
  • Using the Quick-Paste menu, I'm not sure how to apply the formatting to any clips other than the most recently copied.

A little over your budget but maybe the Motorola G6 or G6+ (not the G6 Play unless it floats your boat)?

Dedicated uSD slot, available in single or dual SIM config, dual back cameras, reasonably vanilla Android experience (the Moto Actions/Display are actually useful compared to the usual "extras" you get), etc, etc.

Relatively new release, this month I think, so you might need to search for reviews a bit.
somehow I had missed this post 4wd, only seen it today -- complete with .de links, thanks
Did find a goodish review of the G6 (German language) via one of the amazon.de reviews. It's very positive.

Notification light is not important for me. I like to be able to forget my phone :-\

Trying to get my head around actual size vs. screensize, I created a short list in table form
https://docs.google....UaQ/edit?usp=sharing

Screenshot - 2018-05-06 , 14_11_06.png
(down at the bottom there are Ath's and my current phones)

it's impressive that the new Moto G6 is 5.7" -- yet is shorter than most of the other phones (but wider). It is 18:9 format (2:1) which helps keep the width down. The new camera + photo engine (or whatever that get's called) is supposed to be very good for the price class. It's a dual lens setup. Well above my planned budget and size, but tempting...

If you are aiming for a Nokia, I'd opt for the Nokia 6 (~ €200,-) or Nokia 6.1 (aka Nokia 6 2018) (~ €300,0), that have a much better processor (Qualcomm 6xx instead of 4xx) and screen (1920x1080 instead of 1280x720), as well as a better camera (back: 16 mp instead of 13 mp, front: 8 mp), and also, the Nokia 5 is lacking a notification-led, for some reason (just like the Motorola G5/s/plus series), AFAICS.
I also do like that the Nokia 6.1 comes with Android One, ensuring often and soon updates by Google, but that should also be the case for the Nokia 5 as it has stock-Android.
belated thanks Ath
will have to consider size: I really like the 4.7" I'm currently using -- 5.5" / 2018 seems like a big jump, mind you it's about the same actual size as the 5.2" / 2017 version.
Re camera, for the record, more pixels doesn't mean better camera :p but in fairness, normally more  expensive equals better.

The idea Android gets updated makes any of them very attractive options.

I'm making the mistake of posting pictures I like (above) instead of 'news'. Maybe I should edit thread title...
Here I do that again, but this time plus interesting story, and some science

Photographer Christopher Burkett makes photos with 10" x 8" color negatives (!) printing them using a paper that is no longer produced. The topic is of interest but mainly posting because of the beautiful images, and also because the photographer himself impressed me.

Vaguely related:

The Science of Camera Sensors [also qualifies for the very interesting thread]

The 13 minute video explains:

How photographic film uses a thin coating of silver halide crystals to capture light.
The science behind the photodiode that converts light into electrical current for all digital image sensors
How a Charged Couple Device (or CCD) sensor works, and its pros and cons.
How a Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor (or CMOS) sensor works, and its pros and cons.

I'm looking at the Nokia 5 @ around €150 (euros) amazon.de link

Listed as Nokia 5 Dual SIM Smartphone - deutsche Ware (13,2 cm (5,2"), 16GB, 13 Megapixel Kamera, Android 7.0)
Apparently has been, or can be, updated to Android 8.

Has dual sim *plus* an sd card slot.

Amazon reviews generally positive -- although a lot of the one star reviews talk about it giving up after a month or two, which is a little worrying. Camera not so good (pity), although hard to know what people are comparing it to. (FWIW I have been very happy with the Nokia 730/735 phone camera -- not great in low light, but otherwise takes quite nice pics.)

I haven't done a lot of research -- am still using the Nokia 735, a windows phone, but, due to broken screen which costs more than above linked phone to replace, it's on the way out. Off-topic// Windows has been very limiting at times, but in general I loved it, and will miss it.

So if anyone has any opinion, or other suggestions in the lower price segment (under 200 euros or so), do say. If not, I will eventually get my act together, do some more research, and report back.

I look at DP Review too, and notice they sometimes quote PetaPixel, as if the latter tend to get news first.  But there's a limit to how many sites you can monitor...
that's a good source

I'm not sure where the other fund-raising related threads are:
I know in one of them, Skwire made a quite comprehensive list of coders.

SmugMug snaps up Flickr, promises 'the future is bright'
Published Apr 23, 2018 -- not much info available as of writing; comments are of interest -- some discussion of alternatives, generally positive comments about Flickr as is.

As one of the commenters says: "What's the betting that there is a heat detecting version mooted that will power up as soon as a warm blooded creature is in the vicinity."

I'll chance starting a topic with some photography and camera related news that I think might be of interest here.

I'm no expert, but do follow a couple of sites, in particular www.dpreview.com and www.imaging-resource.com/
Feel free to contribute.
Not sure whether do it as one link per post, or multiple. (We'll see how it goes.)

EDIT// stripped 'News' out of the title, as the thread, so far, is some news, but also nice pics, and simply 'of interest' posts e.g. how camera sensors work below

Was There a Civilization On Earth Before Humans?
good find

our work also opened up the speculative possibility that some planets might have fossil-fuel-driven cycles of civilization building and collapse. If a civilization uses fossil fuels, the climate change they trigger can lead to a large decrease in ocean oxygen levels. These low oxygen levels (called ocean anoxia) help trigger the conditions needed for making fossil fuels like oil and coal in the first place. In this way, a civilization and its demise might sow the seed for new civilizations in the future.

hi Hammerhead,
we get a lot of spam here (probably like most forums). People like Stephen (Stephen66515) give of their spare time to delete said spam and keep the forum clean.
I saw your link (on the previous page) and decided to *not* follow it. Maybe you've been lucky online, but I've experienced a few viruses simply from visiting a site.

So whether you post the images here or not, is your choice, but I think it would be nice to be nice to the people that keep this forum up and running.

There are lots of forums to help you remove viruses / adware. I've used a couple over the years, probably mentioned them here somewhere.
Or try instructions as per multiple sites that tell you how to "remove BingSearchby". One I found was on malwaretips.com, appeared to give fairly sensible advice.

I am struggling to find a satisfying solution.

I think this particular thread got stuck on the 'creepy' tag -- it's kind of hard to move on from there.

General Software Discussion / Re: What's going on with Java?
« Last post by tomos on April 28, 2018, 02:31 PM »
Most Java-based applications I have encountered the last year or so, work fine with a copy of the 'jre' folder I pulled from a computer with Java installed. They do function as advertised on my system where no Java has ever been installed.

Java applications usually work just fine when they can access the Java executables for which they are designed. Updating Java itself can seriously mess things up.

Including the (appropriate) jre folder is not necessarily a bad thing, from the application's user standpoint at least. Security/maintenance-wise, this move is or will be an issue. Still, in a crude manner, (Docker) containers and this move with Java are quite alike and share therefore the same positives and flaws.

that's interesting. Might try copying the install folders, uninstall Java, and wait and see if anyone complains...

I got told by these ridiculous people from JDownloader, that actually the adware downloaded is different for each user! Depending on its system, region, etc!

So has anyone figured out what the virus is and how to get rid of it?
It still messes up my Firefox Google results with fake results.

if you still have the original download, you could try resinstalling it, but this time look closely at whatever is ticked to install with it (and untick them and/or interrupt the install). I presume it's open candy, so everything should be visible. Or do what wraith says.
