Having read through this again - I think it is all a bit of overkill and seems to be getting needlessly complicated.

Why not just have a user configuarable capture folder (as you do now) and a simple "Explore Capture Folder" option, then things can be moved at will in the browser quickly and easily!

I think sometimes enthusiasm for new bits and pieces gets the better of us all, but ScreenCaptors primary job is to capture images and it is gradually turning into a filing and graphics program too, neither of which are really needed as they can easily be done elsewhere.

How about a "Move to ... " option that includes a customisable favourite locations list (perhaps a bit like the save boxes in MS Office - with folders down the left and files in the main save location). It would save anyone getting lost then ...

You could also have a "Jump to ..." version for jumping folder to folder, and a "Get from ..." for moving images back to the current location.

This would have the advantage that the thumbnail view could be simplified considerably as it would no longer have to be navigable.

General Software Discussion / Re: Another ClipBoard and text manager etc.
« Last post by Carol Haynes on August 19, 2005, 06:06 PM »
I have to say I really like JGSoft as a company. They respond to queries quickly and their software is good quality and regularly updated.

I do have a copy of RegExBuddy, but I can't honestly say I have used it enough to comment on any short comings. EditPad Pro is an excellent product (and there is even a free version available), and AceText has lots of good things to it.

To be honest I bought AceText quite a while ago and shortly afterwards reinstalled Windows and forgot to install AceText again. It was neat to rediscover it today when I got an update email from them!

If you want to give RegEx a go, personally I would trust them on the 3 month offer - but as you say it is a bit odd they don't offer a time limted trial.

Incidentally some of their software is fully functional without purchase. HelScribble works fine, it is complete and doesn't expire but includes a footnote on help pages when the program isn't registered (which are removed as soon as the prog is registered so no work is lost). Also DeployMaster is fully functional, you just aren't allowed to distribute built applications without a license.

Activation/License/Language Help / Re: Translators Wanted

If you need only occasional, short bits of straightforward translation I may be able to bully a friend into helping a bit for French, Spanish and German. She teaches all three languages but may not have lots of techincal computer jargon at her finger tips.

there will be only one version of each program, the lastest version.  this includes early beta releases.

How about having a last stable version and current alpha/beta side by side. That way people can take their pick.

You are doing a great job at moving things along but software with lots of buttons as 'a work in progress' may put some people off.

Just thought I'd let people know about JGSoft's AceText.

It does a lot of the thing Clip&Spell does and more. You may like to ckeck out the trial version.

General Software Discussion / IDEA: CD-RW/DVD-RW emulated drive?
« Last post by Carol Haynes on August 19, 2005, 11:38 AM »
Not sure if this is available anywhere else or how hard it would be to produce but I could really use a CD/DVD writer drive emulator.

There are plenty of CD-ROM/DVD-ROM emulators out there (such as DriveImage supplied with Nero) but I haven't seen any equivalent writer/re-writer emulators

Ideally the drive should appear as a normal windows device but allow writing and capturing the output to either a HardDisk folder or an ISO image.

The reason for this is I have a number of programs that burn directly to disk and have no way to save images otherwise - particularly Audio and Video stuff. It would be really useful to be able to edit the output contents before burning a physical disc.

Trouble is news like this will provoke a political reaction.

I saw the original post and thought "don't think this is the place for then potential firestorm that could follow", but you are quite correct you simply quoted the news.

I have had to bite my fingers to stop knocking out a poitical response from the other side of the pond ....

Screenshot Captor / Re: Coming soon.. Arrows, callouts, textboxes
« Last post by Carol Haynes on August 18, 2005, 05:12 AM »
Rather than adding specific items why not code it so you can add and move "stamps" around the image. Those stanps could then take any image - arrows, etc. but equally well be anything else. A user library of useful images could then be added (and donated to the project).

If stamps could be grouped you could allow user gernated groups to appear on the button bar too - so the library could contain eg. a group of arrows with an associated button. These groups could be built up into a downloadable selection of stamp libraries ...

Just a thought ...

to see that this is nod32 at fault, go to nod32 amon settings, and in options UNCHECK "runtime packers","Self-extracting archives","Advanced Heuristics".

Actually just unticking "Advanced Heuristics" seems to do the trick.

I like the new layout by the way.
7712
Personally I don't think the thumbnail view needs to be a navigable folder structure - unless you see this app. becoming a file viewer as well as screen capture (IMHO this is unnecessary as there are plenty of good thumbnail viewers out there already - not least IrfanView). This would also make the viewer easier to code.

Just thumbs of the 'shots' taken and stored in the default directory would be sufficient for me. It would be useful to be able to select multiple thumb nails and us a right click "Move to folder ..." command though.
7713
It is interesting that it still happens with NOD32 disabled though ???

Further comment on thumbnail bug.

It seems to be OK when there are more than 2 thumbs.

If you delete all your thumbs the preview should presumably go blank - it doesn't at the mo.

Also when you have 2 thumbs left it doesn't seem to switch consistently on a single click.

Clicking on a folder has no effect on the preview - I would expect the preview to blank since no thumb is selected.

By the way - I think this is a great bit of software. I have been using SnagIT for ages, and think that is a fantastic bit of kit but it is over the top most of the time - this will become a favourite for simple image captures.

How about text capture as a future option ?
7714
Thanks.

Just downloaded the latest version. Two things:

1) Speed of unpacking isn't related to my antivirus. I switched it off and the unpacking took the same time. (By the way I use NOD32)

2) There seems to be a bug in the thumbnail display down the left. If I select an image it doesn't always appear in the preview area. Clicking on another image first seems to fix it but something is a bit peculiar there.

Suggestion: How about making the 'fit' tick box above the preview on by default?

Cheers

Have I missed something?

I downloaded the latest version, double clicked the self-extracting zip and it returned error code 0.

I tried to unzip with WinRAR - and it hung for ages on one file.

Opened with WinRAR and tested the archive - fine

Unzipped with WinZip (ok - but for some reason slow).

Also on first run get the nag screen - no word on how to get a license in the help file, on screen or on the webpage (or else I'm stupid) ??

Slightly mystified at the mo. In principle I don't mind the idea of having to request a license to get rid of the nag screen, but it could be a little clearer how to do so ;)

General Review Discussion / Re: Best Archive Manager Review: Suggestions

Got WinZip, WinRAR and StuffIT on my system

Got to say my favourite is WinRAR, I like the fact that WinRAR can add information to a Zip to help protect the integrity of the Zip file, and also lock contents. Plus RAR seems to be just about the most efficient packing algorithm - certainly beats Zip format.

WinZIP is the ubiquotous compression format and WinZip is hard to beat for speed. I also has the advantage of a plugin for MS Outlook XP/2003 which allows attachments to be compressed on the fly when sending emails - which is a nice idea. Also WinZIP has a full, well documented command line interface.

StuffIt is my least favourite and I only really use it for unpacking the odd .sit file. The StuffIt interface is clunky and confusing IMHO.

I also tried ACDZip for a while (from ACD Systems who make ACDSee) - again I found it a bit limiting and the interface somewhat clunky.

Thanks for the confirmation of the file source.

It's OK I knew they weren't going to pass my credit card details to the Taliban, just an interesting effect.

I have sent of a screaming email to Sunbelt - I'll see if they bother to reply.

I never use AntiSpy type software to do my clearing up - but they can be a useful first stop to see if there is any likely malware on your system.

Trouble is CounterSpy was recently voted the best AntiSpyware programme by a number of magazines and websites, and if people blindly believe they will have real problems with their software and systems!

The other problem I perceive (which is quite sinister) is that writers like you who produce useful little utilities and applications will start to get branded as spyware producers for no good reason (apart from companies who really can't be bothered to do their homework). I really think as a software writer that you should complain to them that their stupidity is jepardising your livelihood !!

It is interesting to note that they also flagged up infected files as supplied in:

Britannica 2005
MS Visual Studio 6 Pro
Cakewalk Sonar
Google Earth

FWIW the messages produced relevant to Drag&Drop are:

Drag&Drop Robot / CounterSpy flagged files - query
« Last post by Carol Haynes on August 13, 2005, 04:29 PM »
I installed Drag & Drop to try it out and have also just installed Sunbelt's CounterSpy software and it is flagging two files which I think may be related to this app:

c:\program files\drag and drop shell robot\irunin.lng

and

c:\windows\iun6002.exe

Obviously the first one came with this utility - but I am not sure about the second.

Can you confirm if these files are supplied and if so explain what they are used for?

I am sure there is nothing sinister because they triggered a response for threats that are otherwise not present on my system (ie. none of the other files or registry entries associated with the named threats are on my system).

Cheers

Thanks GSplit looks pretty useful.

I use imaging software for system backup. I can produce lots of CD/DVD size lumps but often don't bother as I store images on a separate hard disk. GSplit is good for breaking up large images into CD/DVD size chunks for writing.

Now .... it is a shame it doesn't write direct to CDRW or DVDRW though .... (not so subtle hint ;))

You could use drag and drop rather than the right click approach. Lots of forms etc. allow highlighting and then drag/drop the hightlighted text, but I'm not sure how this is implimented.

The advantage of drag and drop is that it is an optional approach, you can still use normal cut and paste too.
