Living Room / Re: Simple way to connect two computers (both XP) ?

Unfortunately the Trinity Rescue Disk didnt recognise the usb keyboard on bootup so I wasnt able to change the boot options...
If I dig up another non-usb keyboard somewhere I'll try again...

Lanux, Stoic, Target, thanks for all the help   - I'm sure I could figure it all out (with your help!) but it's just taking too much time (having absolutely no clue here makes it that much more of a struggle for me) - I'm just going to go for what I hope and pray is an easier solution (below)

For TC solution I recommend special USB cables like:
http://www.ghisler.com/cables/index.htm

I am using this solution for connecting my work laptop with home PC (both XP) and it works great.

Even if you can't find such cables there are plenty of USB cables which are not "Windows Easy Transfer" compatible but still offer nice PC-PC connection. Each PC treats them like standard USB disk with small application on it which manages all transfers.
-fenixproductions (August 23, 2010, 02:57 AM)

might try something like this (same idea as suggested by rjbull & jdd) - the cables shown in that TC link seem to be focused on copying stuff from older pc to newer one - in fact at least one of them seem to simply start copying stuff automatically according to an amazon review. They all work with their own software - OK, I found the TC FAQ page
http://www.ghisler.com/efaqusb.htm

Q: Each time I plug in the cable, Windows wants to start the Easy Transfer software! Can this be changed?
A: Yes, please start the tool TcUsbRun.exe once. It registers Total Commander as a handler for the USB connection. Each time you plug in the cable, you will then be asked whether you want to start Total Commander as a client or as a server. On one side you need to start it as a server, on the other as a client.

I can manage that I reckon ;-)  (I hope, lol)

OK thanks for all the tips.
Computer Browser Service is now enabled (wasnt on older pc) but still no joy. There wasn't anything else as far as I could see that would be causing a problem.

Actually if you grab a copy of the Trinity Rescue Disk, and boot the target machine to that, you can select Samba No Security from the boot options menu and have free access to the target machine without any configuration changes. I don't remember if TRD supports APIPA but if it doesn't give itself an address it'll prompt you for one. APIPA range is 169.254.x.x/16

I might give this a go cause I'm just at a loss with all the other stuff (I just have too many questions questions - absolutely no former experience in this direction...).

Okay, when I wait for a while both computers say they're connected.
I presumed I would find the other computer under 'My Network places' - is that correct?

From one machine I can find nothing
From the other, if I go to Entire Network >MS Windows Network >Mshome I get a long delay and then:

---------------------------
Microsoft Windows Network
---------------------------
Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Now I suspect this might be my fault - I tweaked the other (older) machine a bit too much, partly because it was running out of space and memory etc. (& partly just because :-[)
IIRC I may have disabled some network related services - I'm going through them now on both machines & comparing in the hopes I can track down the problem (if that is it)
If you think it's something else, do shout! :)

FTR they both XP Home older one is SP2, newer SP3. Edit / both Admin accounts

Those who want a full version of iCare Data Recovery Software (which includes several modules including Format Recovery) can go here for the download and registration code.

Note: I am aware the site indicates this offer expired on July 15th, but I am telling you that it still works.

Avira AntiVir doesnt like that page (I've been burnt lately so I'm extra careful at the moment)

I see now, 'Vectorian' is the company:

I hope it didn't mess up your work app103.
Sorry about it's failure to perform.

No apologies necessary. It was worth a shot...anything is worth a shot at this point, since I can't find any volunteers willing to design a new logo for the app, and the original is too small to work with (32x32), and looks really bad when enlarged. (and I don't have Adobe Illustrator to try that, can't afford it)

I have been trying to redraw it in Paintshop Pro, as a vector, but my hand has been very unsteady lately and I just can't do it. It just ends up looking a mess.

depending on what format you want that in, I could do it.
I sent you a PM

I like DOpus a lot but I'm still pretty disillusioned by their approach to upgrades in the past:
they gave a fair upgrade price for a limited timed after the new version is released. After that time the upgrade price was increased to around 90% of the full price.
FWIW, the time limit (before the upgrade discount was reduced) was 2.5 years after the previous purchase, which doesn't seem too bad to me.

I dont think this is a very nice way to treat your customers....
If you haven't bought something from someone for 2.5 years, are you really still a customer of theirs? :)

I take your points but it still leaves a bad taste in my mouth (and yes I stand by my definition of an upgrade: "I think an upgrade price should be just that - a fixed price to upgrade from one version to the next."

I think an upgrade price should be just that - a fixed price to upgrade from one version to the next. It's fair enough to give a lesser reduction (or none) from an older version again.

As far as its benefits, I used to design heavily using Autocad, and stuff like this would often come up.  We'd get an old blueprint, scan it, and trace over it to get the vectors in Autocad files.  So if it worked well, it could save drafters a ton of time.  Unfortunately, they don't work that well at all, at least not the ones I tried.  Even if it "looked" ok, the amount of tweaking you'd have to do to finalize it is almost more work than doing it from scratch.  It's something that I just couldn't efficiently insert into my workflow.

Pretty much the same experience here. I used to use Adobe Streamline: it was discontinued at some stage and, as you say, incorporated into Illustrator (haven't used it there). But for technical work (or simply trying to produce clean vector line-drawings) it wasnt much good. I've seen some graphic work done with 'posterized' photos which were then converted to vector images. I cant really think of much other uses for this kind of thing...
There's a website where you can convert images http://vectormagic.com/home - ooups - it used to be free, now is outrageously priced :)

IPS is a big deal IMO - well, the difference between IPS (or comparable) and a regular screen is a big deal.
It just looks great from most viewing angles. Personally I'd prefer a matt display though... :-\

I typically have around 50 tabs loaded.  Using TabMix Plus, I have them on the bottom of the browser in rows of 8.  Then I use this auto tab bar hide CSS styple (http://userstyles.org/styles/4435) so that the tab bar is out of the way.

well I'm trying this & like it so far (it would drive anyone crazy with the tabs on top so I moved them down as well).
I see you made a request there asking about toggling it - did you have any success with that?

Assuming the XP defaults of DHCP & APIPA (Automatic Private IP Addressing) both machines will self assign IP addresses in the 169.254.x.x network range when the cross-over cable is connected between them (time-outs being what they are, this tends to take a while 5-10min) This should work fine for your (quick-N-dirty) purposes.

thanks Stoic - I did try that way but didnt wait very long. Will have another go.

if you can find a crossover cable, then you can connect the 2 PCs directly..

http://www.home-netw...p.com/crossover.html

I'm only getting to this now :)
that page says I need to assign an IP address to each computer, and links to this page for XP:
How to Set IP Address and Other Network Information in Windows XP

Now, both computers are currently setup to 'Obtain an IP address automatically'
It is not clear to me how to proceed from there -
(1) do I still assign the IP address manually? or
(2) do I assign an IP address manually on the 'alternative tab' ? or
(3) do I create a new lan connection? (the older PC already has two lan connections)

my main worry is that #1 & 2 would affect my internet connection - I know I could just try it & undo after but thought it best to ask first :)
thanks for any help!

Corel draw doesnt get good press (see Carol's post above)
I did read somewhere lately (c't magazine) that Corel is still used professionally (only) by designers of cutouts (? "schnittvorlagen") for signs, t-shirts & car-signage.

At that price anyway it seems like Xara would be a better option for most users...

The only way to make money is to get people to buy your product. People are only going to buy it if it's something that they want [1], at least to the degree that they value it more than the money that they're paying. Thus, someone making, say, a million dollars is prima facia evidence that they have provided value to others of at least a million dollars.

Of course, you might say that there are ways they could have built their product better, such that it would have been even more valuable to their customers. This is true, but in this case they would also be charging more, extracting, say, two million from customers now because that's how much the improved product is worth (i.e., how much value it provides to customers).

I'm curious how you see this aspect of it:-
there is often demand for things, e.g. iPhones where you can change network provider (or whatever you call it over there) but people dont get it because the company doesnt want to give it. Fair enough, you'd think some competition would come along and pull the rug from under, but instead, now, it looks like they're joining the club.
We cant force someone to provide something, but OTOH it seems you think it's okay to allow them to rig the game any way they like (and no, I'm not asking for regulation - I'm still trying to get my head around all this stuff...) So, as I say, I'm curious how you see that and how you might imagine things developing in the future. I mean do you think there will be real competition at some stage - or do you think, that is *real* competition now ? (I know: vague questions! I'm trying to get an overview without maybe knowing, or even understanding enough of the details)

Talking about competition, that often doesnt work (I'm not saying I know anything better). It hasn't worked with graphic design software - you could say Adobe more or less has a monopoly. That's the fault of their competitiors really... Here's maybe a better example:
In Germany there's only four or five big electricity suppliers. They are artifically keeping the prices high (highest in Europe, or in EU at least). People are saying it's not enough competition, but also to do with apathy of the people. Same with gas prices here (and there's even a 'green' tax on top of that). I dont know what it is. Are people supposed to march for 'real' competition or what?! (or maybe it really is that you simply get what you accept.)

So I for one know I'm *not* getting value for money with these last two examples... so I certainly wouldn't agree your second paragraph above. If people get away with it they'll charge as much as the market can handle - again fair enough, but dont be painting it with a 'value' brush ;) [edit] I note that my last two example are really things I *need* so maybe it's not appropriate to compare fully with people buying things they want but I think the mobile phone example could be somewhere in between [/edit]

Funny you should ask that; At one time we were building a plugin to support that but we just never finished it...

Once we had finished the ftp plugin there were services already comming out that allowed folks to simply map a drive to that service and some of our existing users were using a combination of FileHamster technology ( features in the replication plugin and script plugins ) to accomplish the same thing so the emphasis on completing that was dropped.

Hooking that up to work like the ftp plugin would not be very difficult using the FileHamster SDK.
-Mogware Support (August 12, 2010, 06:41 PM)

I've got my own solution now but I'd say there would be interest in it - if it was available I'd certainly try it out..

Nowadays with apps like Cloudberry S3 Explorer (dc thread) and the online Amazon S3 Console (same thread link) we're able to easily see what's there on S3. I used to have JungleDisk which is good too and shows S3 as a drive, but at some stage you gotta wonder how many backup apps you want to have running in the tray - I had three (including FH) but I decided to remove jungledisk when Super Flexible File Synchronizer introduced direct to S3 backup
7598
You can also have the ftp feature in FileHamster include a "SendFtp" upload button in the bubble so you still get the revision locally but then make a contious decision when you want the file to be uploaded to the ftp.

To enable this, simple configure your ftp settings but set the 'AutoUpload' option to false and you will begin to see the additional "SendFtp" button in the bubble.
-Mogware Support (August 12, 2010, 12:01 PM)

I know nothing about ftp myself but was wondering can FileHamster use that to upload directly to Amazon S3 ?
7599
if you close the popup bubble before it fades away, the revision will not be saved - I'm doing this with files that take a while to get saved (couple of seconds). I havent tested it with instant saves e.g. text files.

Some clarification from the Mogware forum on files that get saved quickly:

Actually, prolonging the bubble doesn't change the time period of when the bubble can be closed to cancel the revision.

When we implemented the new feature we simply popped up the bubble earlier; On the very first file change event;

As you noted earlier, the comment button was in a disabled/grayed out state for a little bit...The revision is only canceled when the bubble is closed BEFORE the file is finished being saved ( i.e. BEFORE the comment button becomes enabled )...Once the comment button becomes enabled, the revision has finished being copied so there is nothing to cancel.  We felt this design would be acceptable because the larger the file, the longer it takes to be saved subsequently increasing the window where the user can choose to cancel the creation of a particular revision; This feature was mostly being requested for the larger files so it seemed to work well...

However, in reading your post, you did give me an idea about how you can delay the revision creation process longer.  This is done via the 'Delay_CreateRevision' option where you can specify how much longer you want FileHamster to wait after the last file event before it begins the actual revision creation...Changing this setting should be what you want so you can have the bubble linger longer in the mode that will allow you to delete a particular revision.

To test this you will want to watch the revision list of the document and notice that no revisions are being created when you close the bubble before the revision has been finished.
