General Software Discussion / Re: Handy for quick notes?

I like their little extension that lets you move things to other folders from the right click menu options, i find it works a lot better than the qttab , i think it was  :-\ , it seemed to slow up windows explorer start up considerably and it was going to take a while to get used to, which isnt really a good reason but its mine, i find this one intuitive so if you are on the lookout for something like it, you cant go wrong, its free and you can always delete it  :)

General Software Discussion / Ideamason on special
« Last post by Grorgy on May 15, 2007, 04:53 PM »
There has been some mention of a program called ideamason as a notetaker, organizer etc.  I thought it looked good and have been trying it out.

It has many features, most of which I haven't found yet, but what I have seen so far, it looks like the program i've been after.  I'm a student (undergraduate liberal arts) and find the idea of being able to organize notes and research material directly in one place which will also help put it into a structured written format really appeals. You can import stuf from endnote, link files web pages create citations lists export to word (and other word processors tho word is specifically supported) and much besides.

I found the user support area very responsive, I couldn't get it to work, odd things happened and I'd uninstalled it but still sent off a message to them thinking I wont get a reply, and a few minutes later they responded, and after a few email returns, mostly caused by attachments not appearing i got the thing to work.

For those interested, its not compatible with window blinds, so you need to set window blinds to ignore it, works a treat.

Ohh I have no material interest in this I'm just a guy looking for something useful.

The good news is that they have it on special until June 30, Regular price is now $69 for a single licence and for students $59 with other options for 2 or more licences (one licence per computer not per user unfortunately)  So while i haven't decided if I'm going to buy it or not yet, this price reduction brings it more within my budget.  (Upgrade protection is included for 12 months, but looking at the website the upgrade there is free so i have no idea what the policy is long term but the guarantee is for upgrade protection for 12 months

i find a download manager useful when im having trouble selecting the bit i need to download, you get a list of all the possible downloadable items and can choose, probably other ways of doing it, but that works for me

If you use firefox you may want to consider a firefox extension Down them All, which seems to do a pretty good job, simple, nothing fancy, just depends on your needs really.

Living Room / Re: Microsoft takes on the free world
« Last post by Grorgy on May 14, 2007, 06:38 PM »
Its interesting to see articles in some of the tech blogs and magazines about the number of companies, mainly small to medium business but some bigger ones, who are switching to open office and other open source software.  Makes sense really, they want to spend the money on their core business, which usually is not computing or critiquing microsoft products, they just want something that works, works well, and doesnt overburden the budget.  As (and if) this catches on microsoft may do a lot more suing.

Thanks for mentioning locate.  I'd been using the newish microsoft search but it gave up on me, then i tried x1, and its just toooo much of a resource hog, everything slowed to a crawl, and too many features for what i really needed, which is to find a misplaced file, this does the job  grorgy :-* it  ;D

What's the Best? / Re: What's the best Journal (Diary) software?
« Last post by Grorgy on May 14, 2007, 01:18 AM »
Im trialling a thing called Ideamason ( http://www.ideamason.com/ ) which at a quick look has a lot of the features of the Journal, but then i want it specifically for essay writing and research of that type, and much prefer a single organized place for things rather than a separate program for everything, so long as it does it well. (unlike everything else in my life which seems to be totally disorganized lol)

Edit  Ideamason is somewhat more expensive at $79 for a single user licence  $69 for students

interesting, one of my computers does that to, i checked to see if there is a hide icon option but couldnt see one, so i just start it manually from quick launch, not an ideal solution but it works for me  :)

Thanks for these mouser, some in there i hadnt seen before.  I quite like the lists, each one is a bit different and everyone has a slightly different take on what they like so they arent all the same, and with 10 or 15 'tricks' its not to daunting to go through  them all in one go.  (good procrastinating material  ;))

I spose i should say what i have in my system tray (may the wrath of pedants not fall on my head for calling it that)
screenshot.png
The clock is Lclock, presently using yankee clipper, i keep trying different clip board enhancers to get the one i'm happy with.
Pop peeper, keeps an eye on all emails, local pop and all the web based ones.
I like to see flashing lights so i got the network connector icon there lol
Evernote sits quietly in the corner as well
Kaspersky internet suite
Media monkey, to keep all my music sorted, i like it, i find it really easy to use.
Sound card volume control, usually not there but i was tryin out different equalizer settings and so forth and its easy access to those.
These i usually have hidden
FOOBAR, sounds better than media monkey so i have it as the player from media monkey
Process tamer
and screen shot captor is there to take a piccy of all these
And then theres the toolbar to my desktop, my actual desktop is empty, so i needed some way to have access to those things and this seems the easiest way ive found so far, im open to suggestions tho.
Yep, thats it, those are the regular inhabitants everything else comes and goes as required.

yep, I'm a fairly cheerful and benign shark though  :).  Only clamp my jaws around unfriendly nasty folk. ;)
A friend gave me a fridge magnet with jawj on it, said she couldn't resist, and I thought i may as well get more use out if it than just decorating my fridge. :D

« Last post by Grorgy on May 11, 2007, 03:56 AM »
thanks alot for the input, that ideamason looks interesting, and im sure there was an option in there somewhere to do the cooking,  ;D  anyway ive down loaded the free versions of it and book collector to play with for a while, and will see what looks best in practice, ideamason has front running at the moment because it seems to support endnote, which im trying to work out as well, some of these things just arent as intuitive to me as i wish they were (and i've never been able to get endnote, or is it word, to recognize the existence of the other aaarrgghhh)

Thanks again, 2 worthy looking programs to try out

Cheers
Gro

PS Ive checked out the library thing too, i've stumbled upon on it b4 somewhere, its not quite what im after tho, looks like it could be fun tho  :)

I like the look of that collectorz.com for books one.  Has anyone investigated these types of applications for book collections? (my home is almost dvd free, i have a couple of my own but usually just hire them when i want to look at one)

« Last post by Grorgy on May 10, 2007, 03:35 AM »
nothing at all leigh, i think it all depends on what you are doing with your computer and if the programs you use have been modified for vista if they need it, i would have got it except i got my newest computer just a month or so b4 vista was available, too expensive for me to buy it, and xp does all i want anyway  :)
