rjbull, if you have a lifetime license for USBSR make sure to follow my procedure above to get a lifetime license for Zentimo for a mere $16.55.

Restricting the value of the software based on lifetime licensing, Zentimo's not worth $60, but it is worth $17.

After having reviewed the software laying around here, at least I can say that WordPerfect and Corel Draw are still superior applications. I must admit this is not much compared to what they have.

WordPerfect is a brilliant word processor. It's used in some industries exclusively (like legal) simply because nothing else can do what it can, including Microsoft Word. I strongly suspect it doesn't do better in the market because the wealth of keyboard shortcuts that need memorizing.

Well then... I don't get the problem.  The bought the talent and made use of it- just because they haven't remade or made sequels (which are very often a let-down - look at the later C&C's)?

They bought the talent, but they did not make use of it. They bought the developers, shut down their studios, and kicked all of the 'talent' to the proverbial curb.

Sitting on the old games for 10-15 years isn't making use of anything, either. It's just trying to get more blood from a turnip. Of course, what we are talking about is just the tip of the iceberg as to what makes EA such a them leading the front on invasive DRM & trying to eliminate the used game market.

Remember the old Electronic Arts? The company that would regularly bring out award-winning games that would blow your mind? Yeah. Me, too. :(

40... dammit... stop ruining the moment and predicting the future! :P

All I want is to be able to reasonably download stuff and use it... I suppose that's too much to ask... sigh... :(

Yeah....the 20th century isn't sounding so lame anymore, is it? ;)

It doesn't have all the bells and whistles that The Bat! has, but it's been my sole email client for over a decade.

Never cared for Becky! and the fact that it doesn't have all the bells & whistles of The Bat! while costing twice as much as I paid for The Bat! doesn't help its case in my eyes, either.

Take a look on GoG.com.  They might not have developed a lot of them, but they've been opening the vaults and a lot of them have found a new home.

Feasting off their dead corpses in a money grab doesn't win any points with me, though.

They *are* 'remaking' Syndicate, I guess, but I don't have a lot of optimism for the final results.

Electronic Arts isn't *that* bad.  They've made some bad choices (as has Activision), but EA can be localized to a few people, not endemic to the whole company.

You are being kind, forgetful, or young. :D

What gamers among us have not shed a tear for Bullfrog, Origin, Westwood, and countless others who were bought by EA only to have their companies dismantled & their intellectual property to be locked away in EA's vaults never to see the light of day again.

Corel managed to ruin everything they bought so far.

I mean when I say the following in every conceivable way possible....

Corel is the productivity software counterpart to Electronic Arts. Honorable mention goes to Symantec.

Re.: the talk of a Zentimo lifetime license; what do folk mean by that?  Lifetime for using the version you bought, or lifetime upgrades?  I didn't think Crystal Rich offered the latter for Zentimo, only USBSR.

Lifetime upgrades is the current deal & subject to change without notice. Crystal Rich has not only reinstated the availability of lifetime licenses for USBSR, but also brought the lifetime upgrade pricing model to Zentimo as well. If these are permanent changes or if they will evaporate again remains a mystery. That's another reason I jumped on the deal. It may not be available in the future.

Late to the thread, but I have to throw my hat into The Bat!'s ring for one simple reason: 33,000 emails. If you can find any other email client that can handle that many emails without slowing to a crawl or even down-right imploding I'm listening. Seriously.

Diva, I don't know if The Bat! mimics the Cabinet functionality well enough for you to take a look at it or not. There's a tab view that will only show you unread messages in your email accounts. There are configurable Virtual Folders that allow you to use powerful filters to show only the messages in the accounts/folders that match your criteria. Finally, there's a powerful filtering technology that allows you to manipulate/copy/move/delete any email anywhere by matching (or not matching) countless criteria. This powerful mail filtering technology is also harnessed for use in the creation of your virtual folders as well.

I've never used Cabinets, but Virtual Folders sounds similar to what you are asking for.

I just recently posted a thread here discussing whether or not USBSR & Zentimo are even needed anymore. At least you were doing better than me. You knew that Crystal Rich had stopped offering lifetime licenses. Up till a day or so ago I didn't know they had ever stopped. :D

I did ultimately buy, but I probably wouldn't have pulled the trigger if I hadn't worked the system to get a steep discount (see my thread above for details).

Since you are talking about licensing I will reiterate here for emphasis what I observed in my aforementioned thread. I found it a little odd (probably an oversight) that USBSR licensees are able to upgrade to a lifetime Zentimo license no matter their current status and yet, at least visible on the web site, there seems to be no way for a Zentimo licensee to change their license into a lifetime one.

Oh, regarding USBDLM, I checked it out. It's pretty powerful for a free option, but once I started reading all those .ini file settings I started getting QEMM386 flashbacks!  :D

Hmm...Shades, xtabber, and Darwin all present usage scenarios that I find myself in...thumb drives that grab a different drive letter any time you connect them to the system are particularly a pet peeve of mine.

Giveawayoftheday is no longer my friend. Once upon a time, they would give away a free piece of software & it was yours to keep. Forever. It couldn't be upgraded, but hey...it was free! Life was good. Then The Darkness came. Giveawayoftheday became GiveawayofTHATday. They still gave you a free piece of software that was not able to be upgraded, but it was wrapped in a proprietary installer that only allowed you to install that piece of software on the day it was given away. Wait 24 hours & it was no soup for you.

Totally unusable for anyone who reinstalls their OS. Ever.

However, it's still not $27 worth of functionality for a USBSR lifetime license so I got to digging. Google didn't turn up anything worthwhile regarding a price break except expired deals. Being a chronic packrat, though, prompted me to check my old emails to see if I had any leverage there. Hmm....found an old expired freebie 1-year license for USBSR from 2008 (No! I don't need help with my "problem"!  :P)...and figured what would be the harm? I plugged it into the Zentimo web site and what do you know? It qualified for upgrade pricing! Must be because it was an actual license and not a "you're free to use this certain version number ONLY" kind of deal.

Now down to $29.95 for a lifetime license for the 'superior' of the two versions for just a couple bucks more. I was feeling better about my ability to get a better offer with no cash outlay, but Zentimo and USBSR aren't worth $27-30 to me...maybe half that. I've done enough internet transactions, though, that I had one last potentially powerful trick up my sleeve: <dramatic pause> currency conversion.

Crystal Rich's online checkout provides a wealth of different currencies which can be used for payment. I'll save you all the trial & error that I had to go through by saying that paying in Rubles is the way to transactional happiness. Every other choice gives one a 50% discount off of $59.90 to leave one with a net price of $29.95. Choosing Rubles gives one a 50% discount off of $33.10 to leave one with a net price of $16.55, which just happens to be charged in US dollars to your credit card (I don't know why) saving you the expense of foreign transaction fees as well.

$16.55 was close enough to half of $30 so I bit giving me a lifetime license to Zentimo for a total out of pocket cost of $16.55. That's a fair price for the usage I'll have for it.

Interesting tidbit of information I discovered: Existing USBSR customers can upgrade on the web site to a lifetime Zentimo license no matter the length or status of their USBSR license. Existing Zentimo customers, however, don't seem to have a mechanism to upgrade to a lifetime license anywhere.

Does anyone know if XYPlorer, or any file manager for that matter, can intercept calls to "c:\" out of the run dialog, or other shell events?

Directory Opus can be configured to replace Explorer 95-99% of the time it's called by Windows. App103's link is very useful if you want to configure it yourself.

General Software Discussion / Zentimo/USB Safely Remove - Are they needed anymore?
« Last post by Innuendo on February 11, 2012, 11:19 AM »
I nearly wrote the subject line as "were they ever really needed" as I've just been yanking my USB devices out of my computer after I'm sure all device activity has stopped & I've never ejected a device yet I've never lost any data from doing so, but for the sake of this topic I will recognize that in some situations some devices may not behave as they ideally should.

BitsDuJour had USB Safely Remove on sale for 40% off yesterday so I thought I would check it out. Holy crap...I missed the memo where the licensing terms had changed and now if you want a lifetime license it will cost you significantly more. I thought it was a hard sell before at $20 for a lifetime license. Now Crystal Rich has decided to follow Slysoft's licensing model of jacking up the prices and just run perpetual sales. Meh, whatever works for your business I guess...

But Zentimo....for the price premium he is charging over USB Safely Remove he best be throwing in some 'kitchen sink' features soon as what's currently added over USR just isn't worth the extra coin.

But anyway, back to the original question...are they needed anymore? Does even Windows 7's handling of USB devices give you the heebee jeebees? Do your external USB drives implode like shrapnel across your workspace if Crystal Rich's watchful eye isn't looking down over you to protect the structural integrity of your external drive cases?

Lots of people here seem to love it/them so show/tell me what I'm missing in my evaluation so I can love it/them, too. :)

I bought the terabyte software because it is so highly recommended. Never managed to use it, it's got such strange hoops one has to jump though to run it and it seems you need to boot off a license floppy thingie. I gave up, should actually have asked for a refund. Never installed or manage to run it.

Do people even use floppies anymore?
769
I've always heard about Microsoft borking this or that in regards to the USB eject stuff, but I have always just waited till a USB device's activity light has gone out & yanked it without doing any USB eject command. Never have suffered any data loss....so again....I must be missing something. :)

So it does.

PowerArchiver supports more archive formats than most archiving programs out on the market. You'll be hard-pressed to find something it won't open.

I also "pressed the button." I have uninstalled Winzip (and took the opportunity to tell them why, when the "why oh why are you doing this dreadful thing" webpage opened :) ) and replaced it with my shiny new PowerArchiver -- which cost me about the same (thanks BDJ!) as the WinZip upgrade would have done.

Glad I could help you in your decision. A lot of people automatically dismiss the idea of buying an archiving program out of hand because there are so many freeware alternatives out there. There are a lot of programs out there that will do most of what PowerArchiver does & they will do those functions very well, but there's nothing that matches or beats all of what PowerArchiver has to offer and the authors are always working hard on bringing us something new or enhanced.

I hope you enjoy using the program half as much as I do. I use it literally every single day & I'm not happy when I have to use a computer that doesn't have it installed.
771
I remember the days when $20 got you a lifetime upgrade path. I guess they changed that.

I've never really paid much attention to USB Safely Remove or Zentimo, but lots of people are using these programs so maybe I'm missing something. Guess I'll install one and give it a test drive to see if there's any functionality it offers that warrants a purchase.

my version is Toolbox without BitDefender, sort of a Pro+, the same as is offered today:

Given my opinions on BitDefender I'd be more inclined to pay more for a version of any software that didn't include it over one that did.  ;D

I wish they made that clearer on the download page.

I think it's only really spelled out on pages that outline the differences in the different versions. However, if you are buying into the BitsDuJour special then rest easy in knowing you're getting their most full-featured version of the software & the Outlook plug-in is yours to use hassle-free.

We're on the same page ... First line of defense needs to be a bit closer at hand.

The other thing is the world is full of yahoos who *think* they know how to fix a computer & don't. Oh, they may 'mostly' fix it, but you are going to have troubles down the line.

Bottom line is I know what I'm doing to fix my PC. I don't know what nebulous web site in the cloud is doing to 'fix' my PC...especially if it's in the spirit of some mechanics leaving something half-fixed or broken so you are guaranteed to be a repeat customer in the future.
