Is that because you want it to or because it would be for the better of all people who use windows and it's apps?

I don't see how the choice to make it a big fat ribbon or nice slim toolbar would be worse for all people who use Windows and it's applications.

Why did they start making everything for the vision impaired starting with Vista? No, I don't want my recycle bin to take up half of my monitor. No, I don't want icons that are as big as an iPod Nano on my screen. No, I don't want toolbar buttons (including the Ribbon) that are as big as a postage stamp.

The Ribbon is a great idea for an Accessibility option, but it needs an option to return to classic style toolbars with small buttons.

Living Room / Re: boardgamegeek - all things boardgame site
« Last post by Deozaan on January 05, 2009, 02:30 AM »
This isn't actually a boardgame, but instead a card game that p3lb0x pointed out a few days ago in the IRC channel. It's called 1000 Blank White Cards. I had a chance to play it a couple of times and everyone who played really enjoyed it.

Basically, when you start the game, you have a lot of blank cards and you create your own cards by drawing on them. Of course, the first time you play, they are all blank since you don't have a stockpile from previous games to use. But the anatomy of a card is basically made up of 3 parts:

1) The title of the card.
2) A drawing. (artistic ability is optional)
3) What the card does. This can be plus or minus points, traditional card game instructions (draw again, skip a turn, etc.), or anything you want (i.e. "This card must be eaten." or "Bring me some snacks to eat.")

You can play a card on a specific person (including yourself) or in the middle which means it affects everybody (including yourself). When the game is over you add up all your points (it is possible to have a negative score) and whoever has the most points wins.

It's important to point out that winning really isn't the purpose of the game and aggressive play doesn't really work. You could easily create a card to give yourself 15 bazillion points, but that would just cause someone else to create a card to somehow turn it against you or nullify it. The real purpose of the game is to draw silly pictures and just have fun. There's a Wikipedia page on 1000 Blank White Cardsw but since I read the instructions from Riff Conner's site first, those are the guidelines I followed when I played.

Here's an example card from Riff Conner:

bruce.jpg

(Approximately the actual size of a card)

Be sure to check out the site for a more thorough explanation of how to play (you don't really have 1000 cards when you play) and some more card examples at Riff Conner's site. Some of the card examples there may be considered "Not Safe For Work" but they are actually fairly clean compared to some other card examples I've found while researching this game.

EDIT: I just found 1000 Blank White Cards on the BoardGameGeek website.

Deozaan: your problems can't have anything to do with DNS servers, as those are only used for looking up a domain name (www.donationcoder.com) and getting an IP (208.101.58.90) back. Sounds more like there's a problem with your internet connection...

That can't be possible. The intertubes are flying now that I've made the switch. Either that or it's just one big fat amazing coincidence that everything started working once I turned that off.

Sorry to be so clueless :-[, but what's  4.2.2.2-6?

Not at all clueless. These are publicly accessible DNS servers belonging to Verizon/GTE.

Their IP addresses are:

4.2.2.2
4.2.2.3
4.2.2.4
4.2.2.5 and
4.2.2.6

I'm not sure why people use OpenDNS when there's many good free DNS servers out there (eg: 4.2.2.2-6) Those in combination with rolling your own cacheing server, and you'll have a more stable and fast system then what openDNS provides, and a tad bit more privacy as well, without the ads.

I'd been pleasantly using OpenDNS for the past couple of months but with Gothic advocating the 4.2.2.2-6 DNS servers as being so superior, I decided about a week or two ago to switch my router over to use them.

I didn't really notice any difference at first but gradually my internet connection came to a crawl. It got so bad that it literally took me around 30 minutes to upload a 4MB file for my NANY submission. It was like being on retarded dial-up all over again. After trying to figure out what the problem could be, I remembered that I had switched over to 4.2.2.2 and switched off of that about 15 minutes ago.

Well, it's not yet recovered to what I'd expect from broadband but it's already speeding waaaaayyy up. Major thumbs down to 4.2.2.2-6!

I tried the latest.  Saw a different image in the window but not much else seemed different.

Attached, please find a doctored console.log.

That's too bad. I guess a Mac version is out of the question then.

Final release is up! Original post has been updated to reflect this.

In the process I came across a similar problem as what the Mac version was doing, so in fixing it I may have solved the problem with the Mac version, so I'm uploading another test Mac build here.

Anyone with a Mac want to try it out and let me know how/if it works? Thanks!

It's fun to hear about the Darwin awards, but I don't think it's that funny when idiots remove others from the gene pool.

Thumbs down to #1 and #5. >:( :(

The rest are good, though.  :D

I signed up, and it's pretty cool. It's nice being able to listen to any song I own when I'm at someone else's house. It's the best kind of "Hey you gotta hear this new song/album I got!" then just load up the website and start playing it.

Still isn't good enough, though. They should give up their crap and release the games through STEAM, that's probably the least obnoxious scheme available.

Spore and other EA games are now on Steam.

This isn't Visio, but I use http://www.geni.com/

Geni Family Tree.jpg

Sorry the screen shot is so small and blurry... It contains personal info. :)

It has more than what the screenshot shows. It allows you to enter all sorts of information about your family tree, and if you enter in the e-mail address of your family members, they can sign up and add what they know. My family tree at Geni has 134 blood relatives in it and I'm connected to 392 people total due to other relations. Of all those people, I only added 39 myself.

Am I the only one who looks at the first post and thinks this machine is complete overkill for superboyac's needs? Seems to me like everyone is building their own dream computer vicariously for superboyac instead of helping him buy what suits his purposes.

I haven't read all 7 pages of posts in this thread, but from what I remember he doesn't even care about playing the latest games. So why is he buying a $200 video card?

I care about playing games on my PC, but I would never spend $2,500 on a gaming rig. Why is he spending that much on a non-gaming rig?
