Living Room / Re: 150 Hours of TV / Month?
« Last post by tomos on December 29, 2010, 12:37 PM »
Sounds like they averaged the hours per actual users, instead of the US population. Marketing figures, it's all a bunch of ... (fill in your favorite term on the dots)

which would mean the average (US) TV viewer watches 150 hrs p.m.
It's still an impressive statistic -
even if they did try to mislead us...

Living Room / Re: Dreamy Monitor...
« Last post by tomos on December 29, 2010, 09:18 AM »
my top monitor is similar; cheap, poor viewing angles. i've had to angle this top monitor at quite an extreme angle so it isn't annoying to view. if it were angled perfectly vertical then looking at it from below would make it appear quite dark with terrible contrast.

on the other hand my Ezio 24" monitor has the best viewing angles i've ever seen, but that cost over £1000 (over $1500). you could place this at any height or angle and it would look perfect. i'm sure such a monitor would cost less nowadays; it just demonstrates there is still a difference between the budget and high end screens.

veering slightly off-topic: Dell have a very good & cheap series of IPS monitors (recommended by Prad.de here)
http://www1.euro.del...e&l=de&s=gen

For some reason the 23" one is available for as little as 230 euro - seems a crazy price to me for an IPS panel.
I bought the matte 22" 2209WA exactly a year ago (for around e300) - it has almost perfect RGB out of the box. It's great for the price (lighting at the sides is slightly uneven but only noticeable it when screen is an even grey

(sorry, dont have any english links)

Living Room / Re: Tags for multiple users - problems (& solutions?)
« Last post by tomos on December 28, 2010, 05:18 PM »
Just be warned, that when you allow people to tag stuff with anything they want, things like this can happen.

the best solution is to manually edit and adapt the tags to your website style by allowing moderators or super moderators to edit them somehow.

I wonder how Quora get on with their "Unorganised Questions" invitation to tag untagged questions.
I havent fully figured it out - it will search for your tag and suggest ones that are similar alphabetically. But then it seems to accept the tag even if it wasnt there before. Presumably new tags get moderated. Then they have what they call a context.

(I cant even find the tags in Quora. They show me a very short - & narrow - list of "Suggested Topics" - based on one topic/person I looked at. Apart from that, they suggest that I "Find People to Follow" and invite me to look at my gmail contacts.
Odd IMO.)

Has anyone mentioned 'Ditto'?

I just downloaded it (I tried it before and gave up on it) as someone said - in a different current clipboard manager thread - that it had been updated and improved.
Found it (Re: Alternatives to Ditto):

After a period of some doubts I can now fully second Contro. For me as well there's no alternative. Why? Because I just installed the brand new version of Ditto, and it seems to finally get rid of old problems with losing focus, or not pasting properly. Give it a try!

Whatever you choose, it should become the recognizable face of your service, so you really should go for consistency across all sites where your logo will be displayed. Settle on a single design that can serve for your logo on the site, and on facebook, twitter, or anywhere else.

can you trackball guys mention what it's like to "draw" with a trackball. is it impossible or maybe it's very intuitive - i can't really imagine.

also curious:-
I did buy one of the logitech ones years ago, but they didnt make a left hander version at the time (I dont know if they do now) so I just used it for non-drawing stuff.
I liked it a lot for everyday stuff ... but I not able to draw with my right hand

So i got a brand new camera and decided to take a pic of my bedroom window. As you can all see here in Chile is the midle of the summer so it's damn hot, i always wanted for it to snow a little but that's impossible i guess. Anyway i may take pictures of my city (Quillota) in the future so stay tuned and happy christmas to all.
fond memories :-*
about 15 yrs ago I did a bit of travelling in Chile and spent a Christmas in Santiago - I did find it odd - 36°C and people playing chess in the plazas(?)
Travelled down as far as Temuco not too far away from you there...

Any NANY experts here?
I guess the thread could be simply moved to the NANY 2011 forum (?)

Actually, what I was talking about wasn't clipmate.  i tried something from a while back based on a suggestion here, and it was a very lightweight simple clipboard manager that literally had a grid of boxes with each clip in it, and I could just click the buttons to paste them into whatever form.  i forgot what it was called.

Sounds like this one CCCCtrlC - simple multiple clipboard utility

I would probably limit it to public domain/creative commons only, and make the user fill out a credit box with creator info (name, url), and let them check some boxes for the image's license type: BY, NC, ND, SA, PD/CC0 (some of these can be combined, some can not)

This would allow your site to become truly useful as a repository of free images with open licenses and cut down on the legal worries associated with allowing users to just upload whatever they please.

It would be great if people could tick a box which would apply a particular license. I dont know if that's even possible - BUT the reality is: if someone really wanted to post something they would lie. So I think the Terms have to place the responsibility on them to NOT upload copyright material.

It would be great to have a repository of free images but I dont think it's feasible in this instance - I mean, how can people really prove that an image is theirs to license? It may be possible, but I cant see it being easy....

Flickr's terms are actually Yahoo's (link to UK terms). See spoiler for the part relevant to content.

#3 is a bit odd but the rest seem helpful.
See the query at the end ;-)

Living Room / Re: Tags for multiple users - problems (& solutions?)
« Last post by tomos on December 23, 2010, 04:47 AM »
If you only let the uploader assign tags, then you will run into the problem you described.

If you let everyone assign any tags to any image (multiple tags would be best), then each person will use what they want. Eventually, with enough people, every image of a pig will be tagged with all possible tags that could be used to describe it (pigs, piggy, piggie, pig, piglet, swine, hog, sow, babe, wilbur, etc.), including misspellings, and fuzzy searching will become unnecessary.

very good point app

Oshyan,
what you wrote re tags got me thinking a bit 'deeper' about it.
I started a new thread Tags for multiple users - problems (& solutions?)

I was querying what "Categories" to use for a new Q&A website and got this reply:

Re: categories, I'd be more in favor of tags. They're more flexible. Alternatively you could go with a system that allows suggesting new categories. With *either* solution you want an auto-complete of some kind or a "suggest" function so there is less chance for spelling-related miscategorization, etc.
