General Software Discussion / Re: Ever Have a Download Site Blow You Away?
« Last post by mahesh2k on April 04, 2011, 11:52 PM »
Actually maybe google should step up to the challenge - how hard would it be to put up a page after the link saying "you are now being directed to a sponsored link - if you prefer to go back click here" which would at least let people know they are being driven to a fund raising partner site rather than what you are actually looking for.
At the risk of being attacked for strong opinion let me share my two cents.

Do you know what will happen to conversion rates of merchants if google applies this ? Google's own ad platform will drop to 50% or even low if they become vocal about this. It's really hard to make money without being mysterious/sneaky online, if they openly state their intention then not a single ad platform will be able to convert visits into sales. Sorry but what you're expecting here in this thread is from user perspective and not from the data that we see from merchants and their conversions on web ads and networks. If big companies or any merchant wants to make money these days online then they need to slip through like this or else conversions will go down and it's hard to make money off people.

If you don't trick people on website it's hard to make money off CPA/CPM/CPC ad platforms. This is sick truth, because surfers want things for free and if you give it to them with upfront notice and without any tricks then you'll hardly sustain in online ad networks/conversion game for long.

@ilovekonoka, thanks for okami suggestion, going to add it in list. As for Gods of war-chains of olympus, played it on PSP.

@Deozaan, lol. I still can't get over my experience with shutter, resident evil and other zombie games.

@Pelbox, thanks for the suggestion of rune.

Bing is not using google's algorithm that's why bing managed to survive the panda update. Panda update to new google algorithm made the search quality worst. Still google claims that bing copies their results but i don't see it that way, bing is still relevant whereas google is mobbed by ehow/about.com results. About.com and ehow made pages to generate pageviews with literally 1-5% of useful information and rest is crap.

Try this for example, 'phoenix haiku' in both google and bing. Bing gives you result for exact poetry/haiku related searches. Google gives you map of haiku restaurant and few other vague places on the internet that has nothing to do with meaning of haiku.

@deozaan, 'Greek+Egypt+Norse mythology' comes under ancient mythology category, so yes that's what i'm looking for and going to say no to modern mythology (be it sci-fi or post doomsday plots).

@Lanux, nice suggestions. I'm going to see if i can get my hands on titan quest.

Living Room / Video Games and Mythology Campaigns
« Last post by mahesh2k on April 01, 2011, 11:11 PM »
I'm not sure how many of you enjoy mythology plots in video games. I'm playing 'age of mythology' (plus titans expansion) for quite some time. I like campaigns based on mythology stories. Not looking for MMORPG games because i prefer to play solo due to lack of fast internet connection.

I was looking for games (for single user) with mythology campaigns - something like Age of mythology, Master of olympus, darksiders.  :)

Any other suggestions for these type of games ?

I don't like the way google bugs me to switch to chrome while using their services. I mean seriously, isn't that similar to adware or naggware ?

I don't know how many of you remember neoplanet. It was based on netscape's code, still alive but not sure how many people use it.

I just don't like opera for many reasons in comparison to FF. Chrome is just google's way of being more evil. So only good and uncontrolled beast remains is -firefox. FF4 looks good to me, my add-ons are getting updated every week, i'm happy with it.

Rob zombie stuff is quite disturbing for me but it's fun sometimes.

I prefer psychological stuff in both horror and thriller movies, so that's why hostel was odd addition in that reply. lol. Some movies that i like - magnolia, sybil, A Clockwork Orange, Silk  (korean horror), gozu, shutter island etc.

Thanks guys.   After searching on amazon and some other sites, i found toonboom and anime studio(as pointed by 40hz) interesting for 2d animation. These two programs are for pc and mac(so i guess i have to run them through crossover or virtual machine ?)

I'll be checking on other tools as well (posted in this thread). If you get any option, do post about it.

@Edward, synfig is cool, found one manga project -morevana or something like that. Only issue is it's really hard to use that stuff, even pencil looks fine to me.

I know it's ugly movie, but the plot where students get trapped is worth to use over and over in any thriller/horror part. I don't like much gore violence like hostel, wrong turn, hills have eyes etc. (-serious sam and other violent video games are totally different topic though :D )

Living Room / [Linux] Illustration and 2D animation Software
« Last post by mahesh2k on March 23, 2011, 11:29 AM »
I know Pencil and synfig which are used for the illustration and 2D animation. Is there any other software which is much better on learning curve than these two ? I'm in search of both illustration and 2d animation software. I don't mind using if there is any commercial software that works on linux.

Apple paralyzed people in the name of 'GTD and less is more type' of thingy. Some jobs requires a lot of detailing and features, take any music software or finance software for example, they need a lot of features. Not a single mobile platform app, is going to solve this issue. You may find some apps doing job of desktop software, but you're limited with view, typing and many other thought inputs that makes you do better on desktop, not on mobile. So my point is in case of niche softwares (music, finance etc), you can attract customers but can't get them to run on longer term with apps. Desktop softwares come with detailing and features so these softwares.

I will give anyone all of the credits in my DC account if they can give an example of anything in the mobile world that comes close to that level of innovation.

Nokia 1110i and previous phones used to have feature to bar unwanted numbers, all modern nokia and sony erricson phones lack this feature in their mobile sets(as per my observation). Zen wisdom says, 'face yer fears, don't run away from it' and following that quote all the mobile app companies and apple cuts features like this which are necessary. That's ancient solution to demanding innovation ;)

I gave Auspex a quick try but it seems to be way too buggy and early to be really useful at the present stage, compared to all the well established programs that already exist for years.

I appreciate your enthusiam to hunt bugs as an entertaining hobby but right now I have things to do and no time for fiddling.

I am now evaluating Phrase Express and it seems to be an awesome program. It seems to be very well designed, established and I just scratched its surface.

It's free for home use. You might want to check it out.

Oh i get it now, who's OP here.

Living Room / Re: Android tablets to rival iPad
« Last post by mahesh2k on March 17, 2011, 09:36 AM »
Here 449-549$ tablet has additional cost of 120$ for import duties, 30$ service tax. So basically price comes down to 800$. Converting it into local currency 1$=44R, 800$*44=35200R, Which is equal to cost of laptops of same leading brands.  :P

If i've to purchase tablet then i'll wait for the sketchpad tablet that nudone posted in another thread. :)
