Hmmm... I am really not sure. I suspect that I was flailing around on Google trying to find the answer to a question that I had about software (this was 5 years ago!) and found my way here that way. I was amazed at how gracious and approachable mouser was (and is) and I've been here ever since.

Kids who say "like" in every sentence. I want to stab my ears with pencils.
People with pencils sticking out of their ears!

 ;D

Have to agree with Zaine, though. I can't stand hearing "like' in every sentence, either.

So, you're trying to steer this thread in the right direction?

This is a silly argument - kind of reminds me of being a kid and arguing about whether raw horsepower and cubic inches trumped the overall driving experience (balance, handling, braking, etc.). Just my two bits (hint: I was the one arguing for the overall driving experience).

The price quoted on their site for the software is for a downloaded copy. If you want the CD it's $10 additional!

At the moment this deal is looking like a scam. I tried to get some info on shipping because it was taking so long and received an email last night (Saturday night) that the CD would be mailed "the first thing Monday morning" after having been told previously that it has already been shipped.
Odds are good that I've been "had". >:(

I'd monitor your credit card statements closely...

Have to agree with others here... I really can't see this being legitamite. Kind of reminds me of Allofmp3 from a few years back. Someone trying to make money off pirated IP while hiding behind a veneer or respectability.

[/b] If you say you "don't think the quote is accurate", do you mean that I may have misquoted it? I just checked and it seems to have been correctly quoted. However, if you disagree with the article I quoted, then that's another matter and you might be better referring to the author.

Yes, sorry IainB! I meant that I disagree with author, or, rather that from my understanding of the situation the author seems to be misrepresenting the situation slightly (see f0dder's reply above).

IainB - I don't think that quote you've provided is accurate, primarily because as I understand it ANY 32-bit OS is limited to an upper limit of 4GB of RAM.

They could have at least made a "USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!" option, though.

Good point. I guess their legal department killed that idea - no doubt arguing (probably correctly), that the average user wouldn't read/heed the warning and MS would still be in the wringer. This *must* have been one of those damned if you do, damned if you don't decisions and they figured that the fallout from this course of action would be less costly than the other...

And following tradition, Microsoft bent over for sucky 3rd-party developers instead of saying "go fix your crap if you want it to run on Windows".

True, in a way, but really, what choice did they have? You can rest assured that lots of those 3rd party developers WOULDN'T have fixed their crap/End users wouldn't have updated to the new builds and end users would have continued installing and trying to use the problematic products.

End result? MS gets smeared by the pundits, maligned by Apple's marketing, and their support system gets hammered by irate customers. MS would get 100% of the blame, whether they deserved it or not.

OK, so same old same old  ;D

thanks for tht info I also found this interesting, anyway it seems winrar is probably as good as you can get
link

This has been my experience. I've tested it against the DOpus archive utility (actually quite good) and earlier versions of WinZip, StuffIt, ALZip, and PKZip. WinRar compressed files more than did the others (though its advantage over DOpus was slim).

General Software Discussion / Re: Undelete utilities?

PS Recuva looks like it would be just fine, although my firewall's web filter didn't like the site one bit. Without trying it, I would say that the free file recovery tools are probably good enough now.

I'm still using the same (albeit updated) "quartet" of applications that I mentioned in the thread you've referenced. Although I have four recovery applications installed, I could probably get by with just one... Having said that, even recently I found that one or more of my options couldn't find a file I needed to recover while one or more of the alternatives did...

What's the Best? / Re: best virual cd/dvd maker and image mounter?
« Last post by Darwin on March 10, 2010, 11:52 AM »
Alcohol 120% is awesome. However, I bought it a couple years ago when the normal price was ~$57 & I got it on sale for $35. Obviously, what I deem getting my money's worth is going to be different for someone buying today at a higher price.nd not being able to create virtual IDE drives.

No arguments from me! I bought it myself recently (a couple of months ago?). I use it everyday. I also have a license for Magic ISO - I probably *could* have used it to repair the CD that I was trying to use (my ten year old copy of StarCraft: BroodWar), but found Alcohol easier to use.

I have tried both Alcohol 120% and Magic ISO. For straight image creation and mounting, either would be a fine choice, IMHO. Both worked flawlessly. One thing to consider is that both come with lifetime upgrade protection. Magic ISO ($29.95) is much cheaper, even with Alcohol being offered at half price at the moment (39 euros ~ $57). Daemon Tools looks nice (I tried it YEARS ago), but is much more expensive when you consider that a license comes only with one year of upgrade protection. It's hard to tell from their respective web pages what features differentiate the three products. Alcohol and D-T Pro Advanced both have up to 31 virtual drives compared to MagicISO's 15... Other than that, a very superficial reading suggests to me that they're all pretty comparable.

Newsletter for March 8th, 2010
"March Madness"

1. Newsletter Editorial

Hi all, Darwin here with the latest DC newsletter. It's been a month since our last edition and there has been a lot of activity at DC and on the forum.  We've got a software giveaway and drawing to tell you about and our usual newsletter content - DC software updates and forum highlights from the past month.

Last newsletter mouser told us that ehtyar is taking some time off from writing his Tech news letter (see last section of this newsletter for links). Stephen66515 stepped into the breach to keep the newsletter coming. Now I'm writing to let you know that Stephen is the new official discount coordinator at DC. You can read Mouser's official announcement via the link below.  This month's discount is on True Launch Bar, an application dock/launchbar.  Thank you VERY much, Stephen!

Mouser also recently started a thread about Flattr, which is a new micropayment system. Read mouser's introduction and the discussion that follows here and perhaps weigh in with your opinion. Remember, DC credits function in a similar way, you can always send a poster some credits to let them know that you enjoy reading their posts or to thank them if they've posted something that has helped you out in some way.

2. User-to-User: Your Input Requested

DC is a user centred community. There are over 200,000 registered members, and yet only a fraction are active. We welcome everyone's participation on the forum, no matter what your level of computer knowledge or how long you've been a DC member. So, if you're still waiting to make your first post, check out the links below for some good places to jump in.

3. DonationCoder Software Updates

Mouser has released a new version of FARR (Find a Run Robot), and the CircleDock team is busy as always; plus ewemoa continues his FARR plugin coding marathon..

4. Website Discoveries, Debates, and Discussions

Check out some of the latest web finds that people have posted on the forum. You'll find tech news and discussions about software, technology, and tech issues.

5. Fun, Games and Amusements on the Web

Congratulations! You've made it half way through the newsletter! Take a breather and check out some of DC's lighter side. Included for your enjoyment are some links to games and a link to a mini-review of a Nintendo DS title, "Zelda Spirit Tracks".

6. General Software Discussion

This is one great resource if you're trying to solve a software or hardware related problem. We get so much traffic on this board that we've split the recent content into two sections in the newsletter - general software and specific software and hardware discussions.

7. Specific Software and Hardware Discussion

Here are some discussions about specific software and hardware issues and finds.

8. Developer's Corner

The Developer's Corner, sounds scary, doesn't it?! However, it is not. You'll find all sorts of subjects being discussed in here - everything from what programming language to use for a particular project to how to market a product on the web. In short, there's more to this corner of DC than you might think. I bet you'll find something relevant to you, even if you can't code your way out of a paper bag.

9. News You Can Use

Thank you again, Stephen, for taking over the reins from ehtyar while he enjoys a much deserved break from TechNews.

I disabled my account altogether (though I am considering re-enabling it). I got sick and tired of people that I haven't seen in 25 years asking me to join political parties and trying to tell me how to vote in the last provincial election. Of course, my reaction was probably a bit extreme and was likely related to the fact that the political party in question represents an outlook that is 180 degrees from mine. I guess I just have to be (even) more cagey about how I set up my profile WRT accepting friends, messages, and other things, should I decide to take the plunge again.

Bottom line: overall, I found Facebook to be intrusive and annoying.

Ah the Zip drive... I still have a perfectly functioning drive with about ten 100 and 250 MB disks. I bought the drive because I got fed up of CD-RWs flaking out on me. It's funny now - the media was so expensive relative to its capacity (especially when compared with CD-R/W's) and it was so quickly superseded, first by external 2.5" USB harddrives and then by USB thumbdrives. At the time (2000), I thought they were to coolest thing, though.

I'd just add that rjbull's original comment about the cost of the upgrade to Boxer Editor 14 seemed to me to be more along the line that for him "$29 is a lot of money to pay to get a single feature", and not that it's an outrageous sum for an upgrade. He's no longer using it and I presume has found an alternative with which he is happy.
