Living Room / Re: Security Software Showdown!
« Last post by Tinman57 on February 02, 2013, 06:13 PM »
I forgot to mention, I use Avast! anti-Virus and Comodo firewall, neither of which were mentioned in the article.  I've been using them for a couple of years now and have never had an issue.  My logs on both products shows a multitude of attempted malware attacks and hacking attempts, all which were stopped in their tracks.  I also scan my system from time to time with other anti-malware products and have never found any kind of infection.  I'm happy...   :)

Years ago I was an avid Norton user until 2005 when Norton went downhill fast.  According to the review Norton is the speed king now, which was always their bane.  But since I've had such good luck with the freeware products I use above, I can't see buying a commercial product.  Of course they both offer a pro (commercial) version, but they are both geared for the company environment and do things that I would have no use for.

My first thought always, and recently confirmed by the CNET abuse of editorial discretion, is can the rankings be trusted? Because I can websearch and find half a dozen other sites with recent reviews, different rankings, and some of the suites listed here won't be listed there and vice versa. Better to be a skeptic and hang out a sites like DC where you get recommendations from real users of real products. Having said that, I use AVG free and when I'm tooling around on Chrome I use a program like Webutation to warn me of risky sites. Haven't had any attacks since using this system.

I think it's all about the money, personally.  However, I learned a long long time ago that the vast majority of "Anti-Virus Reviews" websites are planted reviews paid for by, obviously, the top rated product.  Just a couple of years ago the U.S. was contemplating laws to make planting reviews illegal.  Haven't heard anything else about it since, which probably means the lobbyist money landed in the right pockets....  Not that it would matter since whoever they pay to make the claims aren't going to admit to accepting money for the positive review.....

Maybe it's just me but where's the link on that site that lists every AV product they tested?

Or did they only test nine of them?

LOL!  What you see is what you get....

Watch the Super Bowl commercials online, right here

This year many advertisers already have posted their expensive Super Bowl XLII commercials online. Let's judge in advance whether it was money well spent.

Living Room / Global Warming & Statistics
« Last post by Tinman57 on February 01, 2013, 06:10 PM »
I've been on the fence about the global warming issue.  I've seen pro's and con's on both sides of the table and have been trying to figure out who is right.
I was reading an article in the local paper last week by George Wik (SP?).  The point of the article was how politicians use underhanded ways and statistics for their agendas.  Though he didn't give any references, in his article he says:

The global warming advocates said it was 2.13 degrees hotter in 2012.  But it was 2 degrees cooler than 2006.  In 2000, 02, 03, 04, 08, 09, 10 and 11 were all cooler than 1998 by a larger margin than 2012 was hotter than 1998.  They declared the 2012 temperatures in the contiguous states (1.58% of the Earths surface) proof of Catastrophic Global Warming.  But yet in 2012 the U.S. fossil fuel emissions were the lowest since 1992!
Does anyone besides me see the statistical faults here?  On another note I've been reading recently where the scientist are saying that this is a normal warming/cooling cycle the earth goes through every 100,000 years or so.  They claim by looking at the rings in fossilized trees, layers of the earth and other means that the planet warms up significantly and then goes into an "ice age" of sorts.

Leaving politics out of the equation (this is NOT a democrat Vs republican thing), what do you think?

An educational broadcast about the "F" word.....
 (see attachment in previous post)

:-\ I've tried three different players and cant get that to play (Trout/WMP/VLC). Tried downloading in a different browser too in case.
It's only 157kb, could that be correct? (Edit/ yes seems to be correct)

I forgot, I have all of my .wav files l3enc encoded.  It keeps them in the wav format, but they're crunched down using MPEG Layer-3.  That's why it's so small.  With XP, you can open it in the default Windows .snd player (sndrec32.exe) and select "Properties", then "Convert Now".  Click the "Save As", give it a name, then "OK" and "OK" again and it will restore it back to a normal huge .wav.  Sorry bout dat.   :-[

That sounds scarily realistic ... but it can't be a legit broadcast can it?  :o

No, not a real broadcast.  I can't remember where I got it, but it's a joke.  Pretty good one too.   :D

Living Room / Re: Debate: Effects of technology on modern youth
« Last post by Tinman57 on January 31, 2013, 09:02 PM »
As a 25 year old, I just missed the online/technology social revolution.

The main thing I notice is that young people (and a lot of older ones) don't get the concept of criticism and mild insults.
People get so used to disconnecting/blocking any negative that they can't don't know how to deal with it properly, AND then are scared of giving a negative comment in fear of being deleted.
So people are used to a diet of 'likes' and no longer know how to turn criticism into a joke and deal with it.
Which leads to emperors new clothes scenarios, everyone too scared to say anything but the person is actually totally useless.

This is written without any qualifications and shouldn't be considered a critical study unless you agree with it.

 Well I agree.
It seems that in this extreme liberal country where "every student is given a trophy just for playing" and "there are no winners & losers" society, being negative is politically incorrect.  Gee, no wonder so many young ones can't take any kind of criticism.

Do you also use Web Of Trust?
The really nice site that tells you what is safe, THEN 'accidentally' blacklists a site and charges a lot to try to get reviewed and off the list.

I hate it when I see it recommended

Can't say I've ever used that one, but I have heard about it long ago.

I do wonder about the privacy issues though. Would be great to know all that stuff, but not sure if you'd be the only one...
So what happens when gramps decides to have a go with the old lady next door?  Surely when his blood pressure shoots up and his heart rate doubles an ambulance would be sent just to discover the "Two Backed Beast".   :o

I haven't used any Google products since they became public back in 2004, when their bread and butter was spying and selling your information to marketers and the government....
What do you use instead, then? And do you delude yourself that <whoever> aren't doing even more nefarious things?

There are all kinds of alternatives, really good ones too.  I don't "delude" myself to anything, I do my homework about the products I use.  For the occasional new stuff I come across that I may want to try, I run it in a sandbox along with port sniffers and process hackers to see what they're trying to do.  I also check out several sites that are "Badware Busters".
I also don't use social sites like FaceCrooks.  I don't like putting my life out there for everyone to see.

How is that different from your Government who you pay for the privilege of doing it?

Unfortunately, I can't control the government or this shit wouldn't be happening.  I can, however, control GoOgle, or at least refuse them into my home.

I have an 8mo and we are already having this conversation... should we let him play with technology?
How about limiting time online, or on videogames?
What Paul Keith said.  The important thing is, much like everything else in life.....MODERATION.  If you withhold technology from a kid, the kid is only going to look stupid to his/her peers.  A lot of tech is used in the work environment, without knowledge of a lot of tech no one will hire you.  But if you absorb the kid into tech, he/she becomes desensitized to social aspects of life.

Of course, I'm no psychologist or anything, I think it just boils down to common sense....
